Task one: Best drawing

Task two: Continuous line drawing

Task Three: Typography name design

Critical Reflection

For this assignment we had to fulfil three tasks. The first task involved line drawing, the second one was object drawing this was a task which I really enjoyed as we were doing different meth-ods of drawing. Here, we made use of both B6 pencil and willow charcoal. The final and third task required us to design our own name in graffiti or typography style.

The first task I struggled with was line drawing. This was because we were not allowed to look down and lift the pencil of the paper. I have also noticed that the longer we had to draw the harder it was to concentrate on what we were drawing whilst looking down. This however, was a good exercise as I noticed that I concentrated far more on my sketchbook instead of the ac-tual work itself. Moreover, this was also a good exercise as we improved our ability to see the details. Also, what I have learned is that certain things do not necessarily have to be drawn the way they seem as they could also be abstract. For the second task we had to draw a picture of two apples. Here, we could either choose to sketch with the B6 pencil or willow charcoal. For this task I chose to work with the willow charcoal as I felt that this way I could make the shad-ows look more realistic. Another problem that drew my attention was that I continued sketching instead of stopping which could ultimately lead to my drawing looking slightly bad. This was also one of the reasons why I was struggling during this task. For the final task we were required to design our own name in graffiti style or typography. This was an assignment I really enjoyed do-ing. I knew from the start that I was going for the typography style as I felt it would be more challenging. As I often make graffiti tag design in my spare time I felt I would limit myself. Dur-ing this assignment I made several sketches but I had the feeling that there was something miss-ing. The designs I made were either lacking originality or they were looking very simple. However, there is nothing I would do differently next time as I felt that this assignment was rather straight forward and not difficult in any way.

The reading and resources that were provided on blackboard for this task really helped me. This is because typography never occurred to me before as I linked name design with graffiti. There-fore, I could say that it helped me during this process. Also, I discovered different styles within typography which I found really creative. Another thing I also found useful was the explanation on how to use Illustrator as it was my first time using this. However, I found out that it is not as hard as it seems and it enables the people that use it with a lot of options. During this assign-ment the hardest task I had to complete was tracing. This is because I found it difficult to make a smooth line. When David was showing us how to do it, it looked really easy but I underes-timated it. However, the outcome might not be as good as it should be but I felt I did alright. This is however a skill I would most definitely like to improve over the years.
