This theme takes color, shape, and function influence from design aesthetics of the early 1980s, both American and International. One of the major influences I see in this trend right away is the popular Italian design firm: Memphis Group. Memphis style is all about post-modern pop, with the use of new materials such as plastic laminate, the Italian design group has influenced the colorful decoration in Home ever since it’s debut in the 80’s. After all, Memphis is famous for the use of asymmetrical shapes and furniture, something heavily inspired by pop art that is an element that seems to never leave the design market.


Graphic Geometrics is more than just your typical squares and triangles, the linear trend you may have seen before in home fashion. It’s really a juxtaposition of details that gives way to a very contemporary feel. By redesigning and jumbling up conventional shapes, you get fresh designs that really merge the orderly with the chaos. Who needs arranged and tidy patterns when you can have volume and proportion that transforms shapes into art? My favorite way to apply this trend in the product market is with soft goods, which is what my trend boards focus on. In

particular, the pattern-play on throw pillows, which are quickly becoming necessities for every chair and sofa in the world. The color palette for this trend includes teals, pinks, yellows, and of course, the pop-art neutral world of black and white. So with these colors

translated into soft goods, bedding, and décor- it creates a very happy colorful aesthetic. The textures, fabrics, and patterns we see on throw pillows, sheets, or even comforters is what I like to call the anti Martha Stewart. Graphic Geometrics is a theme that explores the irregularity in design, and the result is a fun and energetic burst of flavor.


There is always a niche for exotic decoration, linear patterns, and everything geometric. What is so fun about this particular pattern influence and trend is that nothing is perfect in form. Designs are turned inside out and upside down to create totally new geometric complexities. Swashes of color and stylized brushstrokes take away the need for repeats, and interlocking lines and shapes pop to create all-over appealing patterns. This trend is in many ways, the modern abstraction in home

design. I love the way black strokes of a pattern can create playfulness in even the most minimalistic interiors. A completely white room is totally transformed with geometric bedding and polka dotted throw pillows. It’s a look that appeals to the younger market for décor, as well as the classical adult market for the home. The influence from contemporary artists, painters, and graphic designers also affects this

trend’s translation into the market. No matter which way you look at it, this fun juxtaposition of Graphic Geometrics is a trend that is here to stay, and ready to play!
