Hello.

My name is Eloise Adler. I am in my second year studying Visual Communication at Loughborough University. I am passionate about graphic design, and over the last two years have found my main interests turning to print design. After a spending a week at Black & White Photography Magazine, which offered me a fantastic insight into the publish-ing industry, I now feel certain that this it the area of design that I want to go into after finishing my studies.

Creating page layouts, using grids, and playing around with typography and images together are the areas of design in which I excel at. I have had a passion for photography for many years now, and I think that this is one of the reasons why I am especially suited to working within editorial design, as study-ing photography has given me an extremely good un-derstanding of composition, and a keen eye for a striking image, both skills which I believe will serve me well working in this field.

Aside from design and photography, I am also passionate about dance, which I have been taking classes in since I could walk, swimming, skiing and reading. I love to cook, and I am interested in genet-ics, and biology. I can speak Spanish, and I love travel and see new places and cultures.

Full of enthusiasm for the world of publishing and design, I am a creative, detail oriented, hard working, and above all, sociable and friendly person!

EXPERIENCE2013: Editorial Design Intern (1 week) Black & White Photography, GMC Publications

This week gave me an amazing insight into the publishing in-dustry. I was involved in discussions regarding the new design, and was invited by the editors to create my own designs for the pages of the magazine, write book reviews, and update publicity material.

2011 - 2012: Media RepLoughborough Students’ Dance Club

I have been taking dance lessons in Ballet, Tap, Contemporary and Modern from a very young age. Whilst at school I took professional level examinations in Ballet and Modern, and have loved being able to continue to dance at University. The role of Media Rep for LSU Dance combined my two passions - dance and design - as I was responsible for the branding design for the club, annual show, and inter-university competition.

2010: Workshop Assistant (1 week)Bag Books, London

Bag Books is a fantastic charity which creates multi-sensory, interactive ‘books’ for children and adults with severe learning disabilities. During my time there I worked in the workshop to create the ‘pages’ for the books, which enabled me to learn new creative skills and techniques. I also used my photography skills to take photos of the stories for use on the website.

2010: Classroom Assistant (1 week)Guarderia Infantil Español, Zaragoza, Spain

I worked in a Nursery with 2-4 year old children, assisting the teach-ers with the activities and lessons each day. Over the week my language skills improved significantly, and I am proud of the fact that I was able to work well in the staff team and interact easily with the children, in a language that is not my own.

2009: Medical Illustrator (1 week)Sandwell & West Birmingham NHS Trust

I worked mainly in the Graphic Design area of the large Medi-cal Illustration department of the Trust. Whilst there I designed posters for use around the hospital, patient information leaflets, and also the new logo for the Paediatrics department, which is now in use around the hospitals.

2007 - 2008: Studio Assistant (2 weeks)C&C Photography, Sheffield

C&C Photography is a successful local photography business, specialising in portrait and wedding photography. Through spending time working there, assisting the photographers on photo-shoots and running the shop and studio, I learnt new photography skills, how small businesses are run, and also how to deal with clients and solve any problems they may have.

2005 - PresentPhotography

I am very passionate about photography and have won, been placed, or reached the final rounds in several national and inter-

national photography competitions such as the RSPCA Young Photographer Awards and the Young Landscape Photographer of

the Year. I have also had my work featured in various photogra-phy magazines, for example I wrote an article on dance photog-

raphy which was published in the November 2009 issue of DSLR User Magazine, and had my work featured in the November 2012

issue of Black & White Photography.

2011 - 2012Elected Action Rep for University Hall of

Residence Committee

‘Action’ is the volunteering section of Loughborough Students’ Union. As the representative for my Hall, I organised volunteer-

ing projects for the Hall to do in the community, from gardening in an old persons’ home, to helping to restore a steam railway. I managed to get over a third of the hall involved with volunteer-

ing, which at the time was the 2nd highest out of all the halls, though it is one of the smallest.

2008-2011Raised over £1000 for various charities

I have always enjoyed organising events to raise money for charity. In 2008, together with a friend from school, I raised

over £600 for PACT, a local charity, as part of our Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award. Since coming to Loughborough University, I have got involved in many ‘RAG’ charity events, from collect-

ing money on ‘raids’ in cities, to taking part in a sponsored hitch hike, making it all the way to Paris from Loughborough and back

in under 54 hours, and raising over £300.

2007-2009Completed all levels of the Duke of Edinburgh’s

Award

Participating in the Duke of Edinburgh’s award has been a fan-tastic experience, which I have really enjoyed, and one which has

enhanced my teamwork and communication skills greatly.

BLACK + WHITE PHOTOGRAPHY EDITORIAL

DESIGN

After some of my photographs were featured in the Reader’s Photos section of Black + White Photography, I took the opportunity to contact the editor, and enquire if it would be possible to spend some time at the magazine to gain experience working in the publishing industry. I spent 1 week at GMC Publications of-fices in Lewes in January, which was an extremely insightful and interesting experience. The magazine was planning a re-design at the time, and I was invited to share my ideas with the team, and work with them to update the look of the publication. I also created spreads for the magazine, which the editors were extremely pleased with, write book reviews, and update publicity material. The experience confirmed to me that edito-rial design is the area of design which I hope to enter after completing my studies.

LABEL STUDENT MAGAZINEEDITORIAL

DESIGN

Label is the fortnightly student magazine at Loughorough University. I am a member of the design team, to create the pages of the magazine for each issue. Designing for Label has given me a good understanding of the workflow of a magazine, from the very initial feature and article ideas, to putting together spreads, and finally to print.

REYKJAVIK CONCERT HALLEDITORIAL

DESIGN

These spreads were created during a 1 day Adobe InDesign workshop, in which we were required to create 3 double page spreads on a subject of our choosing. I visited Reykjavik in August 2012, and came back with many photos of the concert hall there - Harpa - so I decided to use my images in the task. The text is an article written by Rowan Moore for The Observer and can be found here.

NOMCOOKBOOKBOOK

DESIGN

I am passionate about food and love to cook, so I decided to create my own recipe book of my favourite dishes. I photographed all the images for the book, and combined food photography of the dishes with images I had taken at Jamie Oliver’s food festival ‘Feastival’ with a disposable camera. Finally, I printed the book with Blurb. Click here to view the complete book online.

DANCE AS LIFEBOOK

DESIGN

For my Art Foundation Final Major Project, I chose to investigate ‘Dance and Movement’. I produced a series of images which I used to create a concertina book, which describes the development of a dancer. The book was printed on tracing paper, and the idea was that when folded up the images merge together and are confused (i.e. when a person is learning to dance, their body doesn’t understand the movements) and as the book unfolds the images become clearer (i.e. the body understands what it needs to do). The images I used are photographs that I took and then distressed the prints using bleach, protective shoe spray and water. The distressed nature of the prints is also meant to reflect the confu-sion one feels when they begin to learn to dance, and, like the book, they become less distressed as the book is unfolded.

LSU DANCEIDENTITY

DESIGN

In 2011 I was elected as the Media Rep for the Loughborough Students Union Dance Club. In this role I was required to redesign the logo, website, update social media pages, and to create promotional material for events, such as socials, trips, and the annual competition and show.

LSU DANCE COMPETITIONEVENT

IDENTITY

As Media Rep for LSU Dance, I created the logo & identity for our large annual inter-university competi-tion. I also produced the posters, flyers, t-shirt design and programme, for the event, which last year brought 25 universities to Loughborough to compete in this all day event.

LSU DANCE ANNUAL SHOWEVENT

IDENTITY

As Media Rep for LSU Dance, I also created the logo & identity for our annual show. I also produced the posters, flyers, t-shirt design and programme, for the event, for which the theme chosen was ‘masquerade’.

STOP WASTETO SAVE LIVESPOSTER

DESIGN

For one of my first year projects we were set the task of creating a poster on a political subject. For this project I chose to create a poster illustrating the fact that in the UK around 7 million tonnes of good food is wasted each year, while around the world millions of people are dying of starvation.

THE BEACONWEBSITEWEBSITE

DESIGN

This was a group project during our 2nd year. We worked in a team of 4 on a live brief for Leicestershire County Council, to produce a website for children and teenagers in care. The aim of the website was to give these young people an place where they could go to find out their rights, seek advice, and connect with others in the same situation.

The Council wanted the website to have a strong Leicestershire connection and identity, which influenced their choice of name, as Beacon Hill is well know around the area as being the highest point in Leicestershire. We decided to create an interactive landscape, influenced by the Leicestershire landscape, which the children could engage with to find out key information. The landscape is viewed as if looking out from a beacon point, which remains static, and will change depending on the season, weather, time of day, and cultural events.

My main role in the group was to create the logo and branding guidelines for the website. The logo which I created I hope reflects the fun, playful nature of the website, and also the idea of a beacon being a guiding light.
