A high school or employment background in any communications field is helpful, including journalism/photo journalism, video production, advertising, visual or graphic art, theater stage design, English composition, yearbook design, computer graphics, or desktop publishing. Persons interested in this field should be creative and imaginative, have a sense of color and form, be able to work under pressure,

Graphic design refers to art created for commercial purposes, primarily advertising and marketing. Graphic designers can specialize in a number of fields including computer graphics, set and exhibition design, corporate design branding, book, newspaper and magazine design, television, digital photography, advertising, illustration, and web design. They may progress to positions such as production artist, graphic artist, freelance designer, art director, creative director or photographer.

Companies are adding more in-house designers to meet demands of an increasingly design-savvy consumer. Many designers will influence the design of websites and publications.
