****************************** Letter from the Rector:

Dear friends,

It might surprise some of you to know that in some ways I am quite organised - I like to know what I am doing. I am soon to take a Sabbatical this Summer and as part of this I am going to Jamaica for three weeks. The Jamaican Bishop has said I can go, I know when I can go and I know that I can use an empty Vicarage when I get there to stay and I know the Vicarage is in Kingston - but I don't know anything else. I have booked my flight and I am expecting that I might just have to turn up to find out what I will be doing in my 3 weeks there. A little bit of me relishes the excitement of not knowing - but most of me would rather know where I am going to be, and when, so that I can plan and pack appropriately!

No matter how organised we may or may not be there are times in life when we need to go with the flow.

I think especially of Jesus' disciples, when he sent them out in twos. He told them they did not need to plan or prepare for this but rather He told them: "Take nothing for the journey - no staff,  no bag, no bread, no money, no extra shirt.” Continued…….

Continued…….

Planning can be really helpful - sometimes we need to live by faith.

I wonder what your preference is?

I am sure I will have a wonderful time in Jamaica ... but I have a feeling I may well need to live by faith - perhaps no bad thing for a minister to do once in a while!

With best wishes.

David

Continued………. EASTER IS CELEBRATED right through May this year as we do not celebrate Pentecost (Whitsun as it used to be called) until the 8th June.

THE CENTRAL TABERNACLE has now been restored to the place where it was when the Church was first opened in the 1960s. Father Martin will now encourage people to pay more attention to the wonderful way Jesus is present for us in Holy Communion, and continues to be present in this special way in the hosts reserved in the Tabernacle. For those who do not know, the Tabernacle is a locked cupboard in which bread that has been consecrated is kept safe so it can be taken to those who are sick or housebound. It also acts as a focus for prayer whenever we go into Church. It has only cost £800 to install since we already had the Tabernacle stuck in a cupboard. If anyone would like to help pay for this, their contribution will be gratefully received.

ANYONE WANT TO HELP us save money by decorating the lower part of the walls of the Tolkien Room? We have spent quite a lot of money recently on improvements to the Church and the House so it would be good to save a bit by getting this done by a parishioner. Thanks to one parishioner who has already put up new shelves and a coat rack in the Sacristy.

FREELAND PARISH COUNCIL LISA’S NOTES FROM THE MEETING HELD ON 7th APRIL 2014

I would like to begin the notes this month with a mention of the beautiful display of daffodils in the village. Every year there seems to be more and more appearing and they really do make a huge difference. Thank you to the members of the Gardening Club for planting these bulbs, they look absolutely stunning and make me so proud to live here - keep up the good work!

Play Park As noted last month, the Parish Council have been working on some plans to try and develop the play park. This month we have been fortunate enough to receive a very generous donation of £500 towards the play park from the Freeland Teddy Girls from their coffee morning held on 29th March. Our sincere thanks once again to all members of the Teddy Girls who helped with raising these much needed funds and to all those residents who turned up and supported them – what a fantastic achievement! Thanks also to the anonymous person who reported the wobbly post on the toddler swings – this has now been repaired.

Annual Parish Meeting There was a good turn out at the Annual Parish Meeting held on Thursday 10th April. A huge thank you to everyone who came along and joined in the discussions. A number of different topics were covered this year. Some new plans to improve the Freeland play park were presented and displayed, as well as a talk on a proposal to plant some memorial trees throughout the village to commemorate the 15 residents who died during WW1 and WW2. A brief review of the past year’s activity with the Community Led Plan was given by members of the CLP Steering Group and a short talk was also given about CPR training in relation to the Parish Council’s plan to install a defibrillator. We were also fortunate to have the Leader of the County Council, Councillor Ian Hudspeth in attendance (standing in for Louise Chapman) who gave an interesting speech on what the County Council has done over the past year. It was a very positive meeting and it’s brilliant to see our residents taking an interest in what goes on in their village. Our thanks also go to the clubs and organisations that sent in annual reports. These are very much appreciated and are always very interesting to read – they also help keep the Parish Council and residents aware of activities going on throughout the village.

Maintenance and renaming of playing field Since the tragic loss of Les Hole, the Parish Council have been looking for someone local to maintain the playing field. If anyone would be interested in helping to look after our playing field, (and cricket pitch) please do get in touch with me on 01993 880067 or email [email protected] .

With the agreement of Les’ family, it has been agreed to rename the playing field the “Les Hole Playing Field” with a plaque in his honour at the entrance. The plaque is currently being arranged and will be installed in due course.

**************************************** FREELAND GARDENING CLUB What a lovely display of daffodils we enjoyed throughout Freeland recently, a real welcome to some beautiful Spring weather when everything in the garden seems to have taken off – including the weeds!

On 24th March Jean Warr, who is an Oxford Guide came to talk and show slides on some of the University Gardens. She particularly mentioned Worcester College garden, which she said was well worth visiting whatever the season. In contrast she then showed St Catherine College garden which is very simple but beautiful. She also mentioned a number of other Colleges and showed slides of their gardens, all of which were quite different but interesting. She encouraged us to visit some of the College gardens when open, and offered to take a group around, possibly one evening.

The next meeting on Monday 28th April will be a talk by Philip Aubury on ‘Grow your own Fruit 5 a Day’. This will no doubt include strawberries and lots of soft fruit as well as fruit from trees. It will be good to know how to make sure we get the best from our plants and trees in the coming season. The Club Raffle of Hampers also takes place at this meeting.

There are 2 events in May, firstly, as mentioned in previous Grapevines, the Club day trip to Hatfield House on Saturday 17th May. There may still be a few places in the coach so do contact Brian Wildblood on 883968 if you would like to come. He will fill you in with the cost and meeting arrangements. The meeting in Freeland Hall on Monday 19th May at 7.30pm is entitled ‘My Allotment’ and will be given by Caroline Brett. This should be of particular interest to allotment holders in Freeland especially anyone for whom it is a new venture. Do come along as a Visitor at £3 a meeting. It may even tempt you to become a regular member! There will also be a Bring and Buy Plant Sale at this meeting.

The Club thanks go to John and Margaret Hewitt who plant up the Pump at the Green. It always look pretty whatever the season, so well done to them. Thanks also go to a small group who regularly weed our lovely Hall garden.

A report of the Freeland Gardening Club’s year was produced for the Annual Parish meeting on 10th April.

For any further information about the Gardening Club contact Ray and Jill Evans at 99 Wroslyn Rd or ring 881420.

FREELAND KNIT & NATTER GROUP

Enjoy Knitting? Enjoy Nattering? Come and Join Us.

We will be including some crochet tuition after Easter for those who have not tried that craft before or who wish to be reminded of the various stitches.

This friendly group meets each Wednesday afternoon from 2:00 – 4:00pm in Freeland Chapel.

We have returned to making our own things - from "blackwork" greetings cards to tapestry, knitting and some fascinating flag brooches made with safety pins and small beads! A soft toy rabbit made from a simple knitted square gave encouragement to knitting newcomers & knitted Easter chicks or spikey hedgehog that can contain a "creme" egg are favourite items.

NEXT MEETINGS: Weds: April 30th, May 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th, June 4th

None of us can come every week, but come when we can, to enjoy a time of friendship whilst crafting. It is a great chance to see what other people have made, to find some new patterns and along the way make some new friends. Don't be shy about coming along – we are a friendly group where you'll find a warm welcome. It costs £1 per session to cover heating, lighting and refreshments.

For further information (or someone to go with) please contact:: Helen Molden tel: 01993 882305 or Margaret Wright: 01993 881316

************************************** WOODSTOCK POOL RE-OPENS FOR SUMMER The pool is due to reopen on Saturday 26 April. Last year’s hot summer helped to attract 15,000 swimmers and spectators – the pool’s highest ever number of visitors.

The pool is owned by WODC and run by its leisure contractor, Better. It has a 25m main pool, heated to 29 degrees and with a depth of 3.5m, making it ideal for diving enthusiasts, along with a separate paddling pool for younger children.

Having a large grassed area and café, the pool is suitable for families and makes for a great day out. Both pools are heated and suitable for all weather.

The pool is also available for private hire and swimming lessons and will be open until September. Timetable and pricing information will be available shortly at: www.better.org.uk/leisure/woodstock-open-air-pool or call 01993 811785.

Volunteers crucially support Sobell House in providing high quality, personal and compassionate care to the Oxfordshire community – Will You Join Us?

Sobell House is a hospice which provides expert care and support to those suffering with an advanced, progressive disease for whom prognosis is limited. We work with patients, their families and close friends to enable the patient

to minimize the effects of their disease, maximise their quality of life, and where possible, to prepare for their death. Sobell House commits to listen and work in partnership with each patient so that their unique situation and individual preferences can be understood.

There are many volunteering roles across Sobell which are undertaken by individuals who can offer varying skills, experience or time. Could you be a volunteer driver, ensuring that patients can access the hospice services and relieve the pressure of organising transport? Mileage incurred throughout this role is financially reimbursed. Are you green-fingered and wiling to join our team of volunteers to keep the gardens vibrant and welcoming? Are you able to listen sensitively to patients and families, or organise activities for the Day Services?

Sobell House are looking to recruit new volunteers for roles across the hospice. We provide a structured induction programme, including communication skills training alongside the shadowing of experienced volunteers, and ask that each volunteer commit for at least 12 months. Travel expenses are available.

Support your local hospice, develop new skills, join our friendly team.

To express your interest please call Rebecca Norris on 01865 225868 or email [email protected] You can find out more about Sobell House on our website: www.sobell-house.org.uk

The season is almost done and dusted now, and hopefully, by the time of you reading this, we will have two cups on display in the Yeoman. We are now planning for the frantic end to the season, with games in the week and the weekend, and everyone will be very busy in the next couple of weeks.

Can I thank everyone who has donated money to our collection for the plaque at the playing field, which we hope will be a fitting tribute to Les Hole.

There is still time to get a ticket to our end of season Presentation Evening, tickets are £20 per person and the event will be held at Greens in Witney on 30th May. Please contact me (07917 631742) or Jon Langford (07774114310) to book your ticket.

Even though we are soon to be finished, please remember you can still check out the Freeland Football Club website to keep abreast with any going ons – and we still have our club cashback! Were you looking to purchase a BBQ for the summer? Why not see if you can get it via the Club cashback and raise some extra money for the Club at no extra cost to you – www.freelandfc.co.uk

Next month I shall report on the season and we then start to look forward to our 6-a-side tournament, which this year will be held on the 2nd August 2014.

There will be the usual House to House Collection throughout the village during the week of 11th to 18th May. Many thanks to those who will be collecting. Peace and Reconciliation, both of which are desperately needed in many parts of the

world, is the theme of this year’s Christian Aid Week.

Money raised will go to helping those who are working to improve the lives of so many people where there is strife, so please give generously. If you are willing to collect please contact Janet Dalton at 43 Church View or ring 881742.

***************************************** Can you play a musical instrument? Did you play a musical instrument at school? Do you remember all the fun you had being part of the school or county orchestra? Is your old violin, trumpet or cello gathering dust somewhere in your loft? Do you fancy seeing if you can still hold a tune?

On Sunday 18th May, Burford Orchestra will be holding a relaxed and very informal ‘COME AND PLAY’ afternoon at Burford School (1pm - 5pm), and we’d love you to join us.

We will be running through some lovely pieces such as the music from Les Miserables, and Vaughan Williams’ English Folk Songs, stopping for a break over a cup of tea and a cake (or two), then putting on a mini performance at the end of the day.

There is no minimum standard required, no great expectations placed on anyone, all ages welcome, just bring your instrument and prepare to be part of the music. You never know, you might even feel sufficiently inspired to want to start playing regularly again.

Burford Orchestra gets together every Monday evening (7.30-9.30) at Witney Community Primary School (followed by a pint at a local pub) to rehearse various popular orchestral classics, and we put on a concert, usually at Burford School, three times a year. We are all amateurs, many of us having picked up our instruments again after

decades without playing. The fingers and the embouchure might be a little stiff, the range not quite so extensive, but the fun and sense of joy is just as intense as it ever was! Hope to see you on 18th May!

The meeting was attended by Barbara Gray and Jane Finnarty from the Oxfordshire WI, their role is to support new WIs in the initial days by paying for the Village Hall and the first 3 speakers until a local committee is up and running.

Barbara told us about the history of the WI, which in 1915 was founded to educate women about child care after a woman sadly lost two babies in infancy. It has gone on to become a powerful organisation for education, lobbying and interest groups.

The subscription is £34.70 a year which entitles members to attend eleven meetings with visitors paying a small donation.

Anyone wishing to join is asked to bring their money in an envelope with a cross in the right hand corner if they are willing to sit on the committee.

There was a general feeling in the group that our first meeting should be an activity based meeting, where we can sit and get to know our fellow members, and that the second meeting be a social cheese and wine evening which will be planned so that we get to know each other, and find out interests of members which can be used to form a future programme.

I am thrilled that so many women are interested and look forward to an exciting new opportunity for the women of Freeland. Please do contact me if you would like any more information or have ideas, which we can incorporate into the programme.

The next meeting will be on Monday 12th May at 7.45pm in Freeland Village Hall.

We're in the sad position of needing to rehome our affectionate but timid 6year old cat who hasn't settled following our move to Freeland and the addition of a new baby to our family.

Would suit a quiet and loving house. Could this be you?
