What do you love about St. Matthew’s?
Evangelism is about inviting people to join you in what you love. That can be praising God, or cooking and sharing a meal. That can be singing your heart out, or making things look beautiful, or teaching children about the love Jesus brought to the world, as you were taught. During this time of transition in the life of St. Matthew’s, think about what you love about this place, because you are going to be inviting your next rector to join you in what you love, in what gives you life.
This Sunday, April 30th, at both services, we will commission the Search and Transition Teams, and charge them with telling the story of this congregation as part of finding the next person – the parson -- to lead the parish. Bring what you love with you, in your heart, and add that blessing to the Teams, as they go about the holy work God has given them to do.

THE SAMARITAN CENTER:
On Saturday, May 6th St. Matthew’s will host its next Samaritan Center meal. All are welcome to join us! For those of you who like to plan ahead, here are the other 2017
dates: September 23 and October 28. Sign-up sheets are placed on the bulletin boards for when you’re ready to sign up. Bakers welcome! Please join us! Any questions, please feel free to call Clinnie at 315-382-6689.

LADIES’ NIGHT (FOR ALL!): THE HISTORY OF ONONDAGA LAKE
On Monday, May 8th at 6:30pm, the St. Matthew’s Women’s Group will host a night of history! Joyce Mills, historian in the Village of Liverpool, and author of Around Liverpool, will be giving a presentation about Onondaga Lake from the 1880s to 1927, when the lake was known as “The Coney Island of CNY”. Please join us for this 50-minute presentation, plus questions after. You’re welcome to bring a treat to share, and all parishioners are welcome!

THE OPEN TABLE FREE MEAL
St. Matthew’s is hosting our free community meal, The Open Table, on Sunday, May 28th, from 4:00-6:00pm. The menu is baked ham, with peas, potatoes, salad, dessert and drinks. Please join us and bring your friends and family! Please sign up to volunteer or plan on eating with us!
(Menu subject to change) * Donations for the dessert table are greatly appreciated as well. Please mark as “Open Table”.
THE GIVING BOUTIQUE "DONATE A CARD" PROGRAM: If there is one thing we know for sure, it is that St. Matthew's parishioners are good at making cards! We have found a way to not only put those cards to good use, but also to support the Giving Boutique, The Sunshine Committee (that sends cards to parishioners) and also the outreach ministry. You can now purchase a card at the Giving Boutique and leave it in our Sunshine Committee card box there at the table, for them to send out to whomever they wish to! Now, even if you're not a card-sender yourself, you can still brighten the day of someone through the Sunshine Committee! (see Lisa Sager for more information on this committee)
Look for the Giving Boutique to be set up throughout the year during coffee hour, and at special events, and also during May for Mother’s Day shopping!
********************************************************************************************
HEAVENLY BAKERS NEEDED!
The Heavenly Bakers list is in need of people to bake for The Open Table meal this Sunday, and then also for the fish dinners through Lent. If you wish to bake for any of these, please see the sign-up sheet(s) in the hall. Also, please leave your email if you wish to be on the Heavenly Bakers ongoing list. Leave your name and phone # if you don't have email.

TRANSITION NEWS:
The transition committee met and determined that our first two projects will be the updating of the history of the church and the development of a survey document that will be distributed to all parishioners. The next meeting is scheduled for May 4th to further both discussions.
We are sure that there are many questions out there as to the transition here at St. Matthew’s, as we begin our search for a new rector. Please contact your warden’s, Bill Jones (491-3959, [email protected]) and Penny Dugas (652-3989, [email protected]) with any questions or concerns. ************************************************************************************
RECIPE REQUEST:
Have a favorite recipe you want to share? Please send your favorite (only one at a time please) to Sarah in the office and she will feature it a future Grapevine! If you’re able to email it, please do so to [email protected]. If not, please make sure it is a readable copy that we can photocopy well, and leave it in the office. Don’t forget to leave your name so that we can give you credit for it!

WINE TOUR SURVEY
Attention St Matthews wine lovers! We are conducting a survey to gauge interest this summer in a bus guided wine tour of many of the Cayuga Lake wineries, August 12th or 19th, depending on availability. This will be our fourth wine tour, and as always will be a fun and relaxing day. Please sign up on the survey sheet on the bulletin board near the parish hall kitchen. Cheers!
RUMMAGE SALE NOTICE:
This is a way-in-advance notice! In early September, St. Matthew’s will hold its Annual Rummage Sale, which as you all know is a big fundraiser for us here at St. Matthew’s. We ask that you kindly think of us while you are doing your spring cleaning. Although we cannot accept items now, we hope that you will set them aside for us, and contribute to our sale when the time comes at the end of August. Thank you for thinking of us and we hope to make this year’s sale a huge success!
************************************************************************************
DONATE ONLINE:
Many of us are online more than we’d like. We pay our bills online, make donations to charity online, and now you are able to make your pledge to St. Matthew’s online, as well as one-time donations. It’s easy to do and you don’t have to remember to bring money to church to put in the plate! Please visit www.stmatthewsliverpool.org/give to find out more!

April 2017 To my sisters and brothers of St. Matthews Liverpool, It is so very hard to realize that this year has passed so quickly. I treasure the time we have shared. You good people welcomed me with open arms and have been so generous. It has been a blessing to be with you in good times and challenging times. Celebrating great Holy Days, a marriage, some baptisms…and the sadness of funerals, frustrations of physical illness and the departure of a beloved leader. I consider all of this a privilege to share with you. These times have and will continue to nourish and sustain. My ordination process is moving along, these things are necessarily protracted but headed in the right direction. From here I start something called CPE, which is a Chaplain Intern program at Upstate University Hospital. It runs for 12 weeks and I’m told properly described as an ‘intensive’. I am equal parts excited and scared about this upcoming venture. It is a requirement of my ordination process. In late summer / early fall I’ll start another internship at St. Peter’s in Cazenovia. Mother Carrie recommended the placement and I have since met with the Rector there, The Very Rev. Jeanne Hansknecht. We spent a few hours getting to know one another and we both think it will be a good fit. I’m finishing my second year (of three) in Seminary in the next few days. The work is challenging, but I absolutely love it. I can’t believe how fast it’s going. That said, a little break from the Rochester commute will be welcomed. My last Sunday with you will be May 7. I’m sad about it, I consider you family and this place has become a Church home for me. Not being here will leave a conspicuous absence in my heart. At the same time, I trust in God that we are all headed toward new times and life which, during Easter, couldn’t happen at a better time. So, I’ll leave you with this prayer;
“Teach us to care for all that is entrusted to us, and nurture every sign of Your presence. Circle our dear ones in Your love and blessing; and protect us all from evil and from danger. Give us open eyes to see beyond what others say is possible. Give us the insight recognize and name deceit. May the blessing of our love and our strong joy in blessing call our new growth in everyone we meet. Give us a generosity that pushes back the boundaries, for even death by You has been defeated. With all your powers we find our power in you. The Light shines on, and life is lived in you.” Ninian of Whithorn (?-c. 432)

THE HISTORY OF OUR ST. MATTHEW PORTRAIT
Have you ever sat in church staring at the portrait of St. Matthew to the right of the altar and wondered “Who painted that beautiful piece of art?”
Well… now we know! Susan Keeter, a parishioner at Grace Episcopal Church, Syracuse is the daughter of Carolyn Berry, the artist pictured below who painted the portrait. Susan contacted us recently, to find out if we were the owners of the portrait. She and her daughters were able to come and view the portrait in person, and connect the photo that they had found, with the work itself. It is a wonderful connection with history for them, and for St. Matthew’s.
Carolyn Heery Berry (11/27/1929 — 4/8/2014) painted the icon of Saint Matthew in the early 1960s.At the time, Berry (then Carolyn Keeter) was a parishioner at St. Paul’s Cathedral in downtown Syracuse. She was active in the church, volunteering for projects such as working with young parishioners to build Jesus’ tomb for an Easter pageant.
An accomplished portrait painter, Carolyn’s commissions included portraits of Senator Richard Russellof Georgia, Dr. David Murray of Upstate Medical University, Clarence Harden of Harden Furniture,Judge Farnham, a Crouse Hospital administrator, and many paintings for private collections.
She taught fashion drawing at Syracuse University and created a series of “How To Paint” videos.Carolyn raised funds for the building of the Everson Museum of Art, served as vice presidentof Associated Artists and was a frequent speaker on the arts, including presentations onWorld War II’s “Monument Men.” She built stage sets, modeled for advertising agencies, and taught swimming to the blind. In the 1940s, Carolyn developed the color palette/schemesfor a Federal Housing Administration housing project.
She and her husband, Paul Berry, founded Skylark Studios in Manlius, NY in 1968. They taughtart classes, did painting restoration/conservation and advertising design.
