Grape seed extract improvesmarkers of vascular risk

Grape seed extract use significantly improvesmetabolic and inflammatory markers in patients withtype 2 diabetes mellitus at high risk of cardiovasculardisorders, according to a study presented at the AnnualMeeting of the European Association for the Study ofDiabetes.

In a double-blind, crossover trial, the researchersrandomised 32 such patients, with an average age of61.81 years, to receive grape seed extract 300mg twicedaily and placebo, for 4 weeks each (with a 2-weekwashout period).

Grape seed extract significantly reduced levels offructosamine (from 282.2 to 272.87 µmol/L), totalcholesterol (4.51 to 4.33 mmol/L) and high-sensitivityCRP (3.22 to 1.95 mg/L). There were no significantchanges in triglyceride or HDL-cholesterol levels orurinary albumin:creatinine ratio after grape seed extractintervention, and no significant changes in any markersafter placebo. No association between the grape seedextract-mediated changes was found on multiplecorrelation analysis.Kar P, et al.
