The Health Lab is not yet accepting samples but is anticipating submission forms will be available in late summer 2018

The Perennia Plant Health Lab is a plant diagnostic laboratory specializing in virus detection in grapes by RT-PCR (RNA viruses) and PCR (DNA viruses) and is co-located at the Kentville Research and Development Centre. The lab will offer testing services to industry, as well as support research-related initiatives to better understand the effect of viruses on grape varieties grown in Nova Scotia.

Under the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture’s Vineyard Development and Expansion Program, Perennia will be screening all new plantings for three grapevine viruses: grapevine leaf-roll associated virus 1 (GLRaV-1), grapevine leaf-roll associated virus 3 (GLRaV-3), and grapevine red blotch associated virus (GRBaV). Through late summer and early fall 2018, Perennia will be contacting growers to organize sampling of blocks planted under the program to determine the baseline virus level of these new blocks, and in the future will provide testing for a nominal fee. AAFC will continue to test pre-existing blocks under existing research projects and as part of the National Wine-Grape Cluster, in collaboration with Perennia.

As a multidisciplinary team of specialists, Perennia can assist clients in diagnosing in-field issues. The Plant Health Lab is a complement to the rest of the grape and wine team in providing definitive, reliable and consistent results to our clients.
