We received notice that James Minter of Westerville Club will complete Sam Kiner’s term as Lt. Gov. Elect of Div. 10E and will be the Lt. Gov. Designate for the 2017 – 2018 year. You may recall Jim emceed our 4th of July “Granville’s Got Talent” show this year.
Licking County Soil & Water Conservation District Intern Emily Kauchak interned this summer with the LCSWCD. She is a graduate of Granville High School, was on the National Honor Society and a member of the Key Club. She will be attending Allegheny College in Pennsylvania this fall. She thanked us for our generosity in support of the LCSWCD Summer Intern Scholarship program. She is concerned with preservation of our natural resources and involved with conservation to protect them. As an intern she was quickly involved with a summer workshop, which equipped people to monitor water uses and conservation methods. -‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐Promoting the use of rainwater barrels and water gardens. During the 4th of July parade she was dressed as Darrell the rainwater barrel. She traveled to many areas of the County involving conservation, worked on farms and gained a lot of knowledge about conservation. She found if you approach a situation like you know what you are doing no one questions your abilities. “As a result of my internship my life’s journey has been set. Thank you for your support. You have changed my life.” P R O G R A M Drew Bennett It is Unique talking about Aiden and traveling around the world with him. I will be doing that if he makes it to the Olympics. That is the goal. Aiden will be eligible for Three Olympics: 2024 Olympics in Paris, 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, and the 2032 Olympics no location selected yet. Aiden had a tendency as a baby for climbing and tumbling. As a five year old doing somersaults from his dresser onto his bed. In 2010 Aiden, at the age of six, started gymnastics at the Olympic Academy in Newark. Two years later he moved to Gahanna Cyclones Gymnastics in the strong boy program. In 2013 he attended a summer camp in Lancaster. He then started with the Hocking Valley Gymnastics. In 2015 Aiden competed in the Future Stars Nationals and placed 22nd. In 2016: he placed 1st in the Ohio Championship, he placed 1st in Region 5 Future Stars Championship, and he placed 16th in the Future Stars Nationals. In 2017 he placed 3rd in the Level 8 State Championships, and 25th in the Junior Elite Nationals. Aiden will be doing home schooling this year so he can train in Lancaster. On Mon., Tues., Wed., & Thur. he starts at 9:00 am and finishes at 6:30 pm. During that time he will train 5 hours per day and do school work for 3½. In addition there will be 1½ hrs. of travel time (45 min. down and 45 min. back). Fri. is the same except he will start at 10:30 and stop at 7:30. Sat. will be from 8:30 am – 12:30 pm. In the United States there are 3,450 member clubs, 178,000 athletes, with 4,000 events each year. At the Olympic
training site there is a difference between the men and women’s abilities. The average age for a woman gymnast is 16. The average age of the US team is 19.4 yrs. and average ht. is 5’-‐0”. The men’s average age is 27 and the average height is 5’-‐4” to 5’-‐7”. A lot happens to the gymnasts as they enter puberty and growth spurts. These changes affect, balance, flexibility, and strength. Participants in the Future Stars program are on the right path to develop their skills and abilities. Junior Development programs levels 4 – 10 are more recreational gymnastics and are not eligible to compete in Nationals. Jr. Olympics program levels 4 -‐7 is required to perform the same routines and are judged on abilities to complete the compulsory programs. Junior Elite programs levels 8 – 10 are more optional programs where the gymnast can develop their own programs and styles. In the last Olympics the women’s team was outstanding. 60% of the woman’s routine is based on flexibility. Men’s gymnastics is based on the competitive execution of skills, which not all men are able to hit regularly. There are only 16 Div. 1 schools with men’s gymnastics teams. Nearly all Div. 1 colleges have women’s gymnastics teams. This is primarily because of Title 9 and the schools that are strong in football and men’s sports have to provide an equal amount of scholarships to women’s sports. Drew showed film clips of Aiden doing floor exercises, high bar, pommel horse, and rings. He also works on the parallel bars. Questions: 1. What is your least favorite exercise and favorite? My least
favorite is pommel horse & my favorite is the high bar. 2. Where would you want to go to college? Oklahoma because
there is more pressure there and I work better under pressure. I would also consider Ohio State.
3. Do you do strength training? No. The only weights we lift are our bodies. Drew said Aiden is able to do 90 pull-‐ups.
