Bartholomew Stovall: His Story by Donald Brown

Bartholomew Stovall, my seventh great-grandfather, was born and grew up in Southeast England, in the shire of Surrey. As a young man, he volunteered to become an indentured servant in America, sailing across the Atlantic Ocean to the Dominion of Virginia. In Henrico County he fulfilled his indenture, married and raised children, and became a landowner. The Stovall. research . in this article, unless otherwise noted, is from the superb and valuable book, The Family of Bartholomew Stovall by Neil D. Thompson, published by the Stovall Family Association in 1993. The comments and background information are mine. Bartholomew Stovall was born in Albury of the county of Surrey on August 24, in 1663, 1664 or 1665 (Old Style Calendar, which applies to all of the dates in this article). The Stovall line, with various spellings, goes back in Surrey to Albury and Cranley of the 1500's. Bartholomew's parents were George and Joan (Tickner) Stovald, who were Quakers, members of the Society of Friends. His paternal grandparents were George and Margaret (Farley aka Deane) Stovald. George was a blacksmith. Bartholomew's maternal grandparents were Bartholomew and Millicent Tickner. His Stovall great-grandparents were George and Lettice (a Stone aka Aston) Stovald. George, who was born about 1555, was a husbandman (farmer). The Stovall-Stovald line directly branched to the Aldridge/Aldred line with the Tickner line, directly branching to the Fraunces line, both in Surrey of the 1500's. The Farley/Deane line and the a Stone/Aston line also were in Surrey in the 1500's. These years embrace the Elizabethan Age. When Bartholomew was born, Charles II was on the throne of England, having ascended in 1660 after the Cromwell Protectorate, with a new era, the lively Restoration, in force. In July of 1665 the Great Plague of London erupted with thousands and thousands of people - dying before the Great Fire of London in 1766 swept away this bubonic plague. Four of the prominent Englishmen as Bartholomew was growing up was John Bunyan, who was jailed in 1660-61 for preaching, years later publishing The Pilgrim's Progress; Samuel Pepys, who kept his famous diary from 1660 to 1669; John Milton, who published "Paradise Lost" in 1667; and Isaac Newton, who saw an apple falling from a tree, reputedly in 1665, later writing of gravity. Surrey is bounded on the northeast by the Thames River and today by Greater London, with this part of metropolis once part of Surrey. Today many Surrey residents commute to London for their jobs, but in Bartholomew's time Surrey was a shire of bucolic villages still with medieval traces. Guildford, north-west of Albury, has remained the county seat. The Plain of Runnymede is in Surrey, the spot on the south bank of the Thames in 1215. where the barons forced King John to sign the Magna Carta ^ Lewis Carroll, who wrote Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, spent most of his life at Oxford, but died and was buried at Guildford. Years ago I was in Surrey. From London I took a Sunday bus tour which I now know included part of Surrey, for I remember the tour guide pointing and saying that the Plain of Runnymede was close by. I did not know of my Stovall line or that I was on ancestral ground.

Father Died in 1665

George Stovall, Bartholomew's father, died in November of 1665, being buried on November eighth. He was born about 1623,,which means that he died when he was about 42 years old and Bartholomew was an infant. Thus he was about 40-42 years old when Bartholomew was born. Bartholomew's mother Joan was born

Granville Connections 89 GCGS 1746, Inc. September 2016

about 1625, which means that she was about 38-40 years old when Bartholomew was born. We do not know when the parents were married. We have no record of any siblings of Bartholomew. We; do have proof that the parents were married by October 15, 1653. On October 15, 1653, Millicent Tickner, widow of Bartholomew Tickner, and her daughter Joan, the wife of George "Stobbold," asked the lord of the manor of Albury for a cottage and garden while Bartholomew Tickner had given up. The claim was allowed with Millicent granted "copyright" (ownership by way of the roll of a manorial court) for life, and afterwards to Joan and her heirs. Because of "their poverty{" part of the fine was remitted. Millicent apparently soon died, for on August 8, 1654, George "Stobbold" was listed as a tenant of this cottage; and in 1657, 1659, 1661 and 1663, he was fined for not attending the manorial court. All of this seems to be a remnant of the medieval land system. Was Bartholomew born in this cottage, growing up there? So in 1653, about 10-12 years before Bartholow was born, George and Joan were already married. George was then about 30 years old and Joan was about 28 years old. Between 1653 and the early 1660's when Bartholomew was born, were there other children? There are missing items concerning this family. On May 7, 1675, "Widow Stovall" asked her fellow Quaker members to help her find an apprenticeship or other employment names for her son. Fir4t_t\-of the needy mother and son were not recorded, but this surely was Joan and Bartholomew. Bartholomew would have been about 10 years old. We do not know when Joan died. Was she gone by 1624 when Bartholomew signed an indenture to go to America? On November 11, 1683, Bartholomew was baptized into the Church of England at the St. Peter and St. Paul Church in Albury, with his age given as 18, which is perhaps the most accurate age record. This Anglican church exists today with changes through the years, in Albury Park about a mile from the newer St. Peter and St. Paul's. It seems that Bartholomew was preparing for his indenture to Virginia, for at this time Quakers were banned in Virginia. Virginia wanted definite Anglicans. Eight months after his baptism, "Bartholomew Stoell (sic), aged about 21 years," son of George "Stowell" of "Alborough, Surrey," agreed to indenture himself to John Bright, a London merchant, "or his assigns," four years after his arrival in Virginia. Bartholomew signed with a mark. The term "indentured servant" was not used. He signed to serve as a "husbandman" (farmer) per The Stovall Family in America by Carmae Massey Smith (1979). Bartholomew was to sail on the ship "Booth" with Peter Pagan the master.

Arrived in Virginia in 1684

In Virginia was Bartholomew indentured to Richard Kennon? on Kennon April 1, 1690, petitioned the Henrico County Court for in 1684 land grants for importing a number of persons, both white and black, among them Bartholomew "Stowell." We wish that we knew more about Bartholomew's complete indenture. When Bartholomew arrived in Virginia in 1784, it was 77 years since the founding of Jamestown, and it still was the colonial capital. In 1685 Charles II died in England and James II came to the throne, after he was deposed, in 1789 William and Mary became co-sovereigns. In 1683 the College of William and Mary was chartered and named for them, to be situated in the prospective city of Williamsburg, named for William. In.1699 fire destroyed the capitol in Jamestown and Williamsburg, when it was soon established, became the capital until 1780 when Richmond of County Henrico became the present capital.

We know nothing of Bartholomew for the nine years after his indenture surely ended in 1688. On a license dated August 8, 1693, he was married to Ann Burton, who was born about 1670 in Henrico County, the daughter of Thomas and Susannah (Hatcher) Burton. She was the granddaughter of William Hatcher, who was born about 1613, apparently in England. He was living in Henrico County by June 1, 1635, when he received 'patent for transporting himself and three others persons to Virginia. He was elected five times to the House of Burgesses, from 1644 to 1659/60. He died by March 29, 1680. There

Granville Connections 90 GCGS 1746, Inc. September 2016

is a marriage record for a William Hatcher and Marian Newporte on December 22, 1632, in Osbourne St. George, Wiltshire, England. There is no record of Marian as the wife of William Hatcher in Virginia. Was this the same William Hatcher of Henrico County, Virginia?

Thomas Burton, Ann's- father, who was born lbout 1634 in either Virginia or England, died in January of 1785/86 when Ann was a teenager. Her mother Susannah, who was born about 1642 in Henrico County, was married to John Steward in 1686, probably in November. Bartholomew and Ann became the parents of at least six children. It seems that Bartholomew did well in the years after his indenture ended. In 1698 he purchased 180 acres of land from Robert and Samuel Clarke, in 1704 paying quit rent on this land.

On March 11, 1712, he leased the land to John Woolridge for five shillings A per year; and then on March 2, 1712/13, he "released" the land to Woolridge for 25 pounds. Both men signed the transaction with a mark. Bartholomew was mentioned as "planter."

On August 16, 1715, Bartholomew obtained a patent for 118 acres of land on Deep Creek south of the James River. This land was in the western part of Henrico County which became Goochland County in 1727-28. WAs Bartholomew moving west in Henrico County as new land opened up? On May 4, 1719, he gave 118 acres of this land to Hagar Taber for her lifetime with it then going to her sons John and William Taber. At the time, Hager's husband William Taber was deceased. We do not know who Hagar Taber was or what her connection was to Bartholomew or his family. A few court records tell us minor things about Bartholomew Stovall. On July 12, 1699, the age of his "servant" James Morris was adjudged in court. James surely was an apprentice. On October 2, 1699, with John Learwood Bartholomew made excuses for failing to appear on a grand jury. In 1712/13 when John Worsham sued William Taber, surely Hager's husband, for 850 pounds of pork and received judgment, Bartholomew as Taber's security was ordered to pay 425 pounds of pork. Bartholomew then instituted an attachment against the estate of Taber, which was dismissed when Bartholomew did not appear in court. William Taber died by October of 1713, about five years before Bartholomew willed Hager Taber the land. On December 16, 1713, Bartholomew received a bounty of 700 pounds of tobacco for proof of slaying three wolves. He received similar bounties on November 7,1719, and on December 9, 1720, this last court record being the final time he was mentioned as being alive.

Made Will in 1718/19 Bartholomew made his will on January 14, 1718/19. It wasproved on May 1, 1722, so he probably died in 1722, at the approximate age of 57, in Henrico County in the area which later became Goochland County. In 1722 the Hanoveran George I had been king of England since 1714, succeeding Queen Anne, who had reigned since 1702. In 1720 the population of the British colonies was 474,000. Boston was the largest city with a population of 12,000; Philadelphia was second with 10,000; and New York City was third with 2,000. Bartholomew's will in time became partially fragmentary, but it reveals substantial information. It was proven in court by the widow Ann with Stephen Hughes and Robert Hughes as surities. Bartholomew specifically left land to sons George, William and Thomas and to daughter Hannah, giving a brief description of the land but not the acres. He named acres in the land he left to his wife, but the number was part of the missing fragment. From a fragment it can be determined that Bartholomew directed his wife to purchase land patents for two children. On September 28, 1732, Bartholomew Stovall and John Stovall together a have been for 200 acres received a land patent so they must be the two children. In the fragment Bartholomew also mentioned gifts of marriage to four children whom he did not name. They surely were Hannah, William, John and Thomas. By August 6, 1722, Ann (Burton) Stovall was married to John Saunders. On that date Saunders was to appear in

Granville Connections 91 GCGS 1746, Inc. September 2016

Court regarding the Stovall estate. On October 5, 1725, the orphans court directed Saunders to appear concerning the orphans of Bartholomew Stovall. On October 2, 1736, John Saunders made his will in Goochland County, surely in that portion that had been in Henrico County. Since he did not mention a wife, Ann must have died by that date. George Stovall was Bartholomew and Ann 's oldest child, born about 1695, He was married to a woman named Elizabeth, and we know of seven children born between about 1718 and about 1730. After Elizabeth's death about 1854, George was married to Elizabeth London (or Landon). We know of nine children born between 1757 and 1778. George died in 1786, at about the age of 91, in Campbell County, Virginia. To understand the continued whereabouts of this Stovall line, we must note the creation of five counties. Henrico was an original shire of 1634. Goochland was created from Henrico in 1727-28. Albemarle was created from Goochland and Louisa in 1744. Bedford was created from Albemarle and Lunenburg in 1753-54. Campbell was created from Bedford in 1781-82. As time went on, other counties were created from this large area. Bartholomew Stovall, a son born about 1698, moved to Powhatan County, Virginia. He was married to a woman named Mary and died in 1777. Hannah, the only known daughter, was born about 1701, was marricd to John Learwood, and lived in Goochland County, Virginia. William, a son born about 1703, was married to a woman named Judith, lived in Goochland County, Virginia, and died about 1735, John, a son born about 1706, was married to a woman named Dorcas and moved to Granville County, North Carolina, where, I discovered, he gave his name to the town of Stovall, north of Oxford. Thomas, a son born about 1708, was married to Elizabeth (Betty) Owen, moved to Halifax County, Virginia, and died about 1803. He furnished guns to the Virginia Militia during the Revolutionary War. His female descendants qualify for membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution (per DAB #686617 paper from La Homa Dickey, Atlantic Beach, Florida, 2005). George and his first wife Elizabeth were my sixth great-grandparents. Their daughter Sarah, who was born possibly about 1722, was married to William Roberts, son of James Roberts, possibly in Goochland County, Virginia. They were my fifth great-grandparents. They moved from Halifax County, Virginia, to Randolph County, North Carolina, about 1778. William died there about 1788. Elizabeth died in Laurens County, South Carolina, where some of her children had moved, in 1809. I wrote an article about her, "Elizabeth Stovall Roberts: Frontier Wife and Mother," published in the Stovall journal of May 2005. From Stovall-Roberts I am descended through the paternal lines of Miller and Thorn to Brown.

Stovall Surname Had Variants Stovall is a surname that in the past lent itself to various spellings and various pronunciations. In early records, clerks surely wrote the name phonetically. It seems that "Stovall" itself came into use at the time of Bartholomew and his family. In earlier records the spelling had the suffix of "old"--Stoffold, Stobbold and Stovold(e). Then there was Stovald; and I found that there are individuals surnamed Stovald living in Surrey today. In Dictionary of American Names (1956), Elsdon C. Smith stated that Stovall was an English surname for a person from Esterville in France. Additional research might reveal more about the surname. Smith stated the Burton referred to a person who came from Burton, the name of many English villages by a fort or a fortied manor. According to Dictionary of Surnames by Patrick Hanks and Flavia Hodges (1988), Tickner referred to a person who lived at a crossroads or a fork in the road.

The Taming of the Harricanes by Jan Leitschuh The News and Observer, December 4th, 1988

Grissom or Pocomoke or somewhere down the road a bit. In the tiny cemeteries scattered throughout the Harricanes, there are lots of Baileys and Rays, O’Neals, Perrys, Purnells and Sherons. The land is barren and rocky, rich in springs, creeks and privacy. Don’t call this area "Hurricanes." Too citified. No one will know what you are talking about. "Harricanes" comes closer, though the locals say it in two syllables: "Hairkins." It was once a land of mystery; Wild weather, Secrets, Moonshine, Cock fighting, Violence, Self-reliance. The Bermuda Triangle of the Triangle, a lawless patch of scrub land in Raleigh’s very own backyard. Just down the road a mile or so. The natives went to no great lengths to deny the stories. The fewer strangers in these parts, they figured, the better. The hard-core Harricanes probably is no longer, reduced to legend. Triangle old-timers wink and nod when the subject comes up, but few newcomers in the suburbs north of Raleigh have ever heard of it. Even fewer realize they own a chunk of it, their three-bedroom, split-level Colonial ranch perhaps only yards upstream from the rusting barrel hoops and shattered fruit jars marking an old whiskey still. Yet these suburban landowners have accomplished the impossible. Strangers couldn’t do it; the law couldn’t do it. Only urban sprawl tamed the Harricanes. Land has replaced whiskey as its most valuable commodity. Bill Scarborough hasn’t heard any Harricanes stories in a long time. "It’s gotten to be pretty subtle lately," he says. "There’s a lot of people moving in. Another generation, things change." The retired Raleigh businessman sold chicken feed throughout the Harricanes in the 1940s. "Years ago," says Mr. Scarborough, "it was a lot like the mountains, a very close-knit people, closed to outsiders. They were a law unto themselves." No one knows for sure exactly where the Harricanes are. There are no lines on any map. Only stories. The broadest estimates say the Harricanes touch the very northern boundaries of Raleigh’s city limits, spilling over N.C. 98 and

Granville Connections 94 GCGS 1746, Inc. September 2016

into the genteel suburbs. It’s the rolling land between Creedmoor and Franklinton, a 15-mile radius from the juncture of the Franklin, Granville and Wake county lines. "Take Falls of the Neuse, cross Highway 98, and go straight on," says Mr. Scarborough. "Stoney Hill Church would be right about in the center of it. Maybe. Harold Mitchell, owner of Mitchell’s Supermarket and Western Wear near Franklinton, thinks "if you took Grissom and drew a five-mile circle around it," you’d have the heart of the Harricanes. No, argues a friend, the center is Pocomoke. Maybe. Or maybe it’s three miles farther up the road. "So you go up the road, and they say, 'It’s about two miles back.'" Mr. Scarborough says. "It’s always on down the road, over that way or back this way. And you never get there." Author T. R. Pearson, in his 1986 novel "Off For The Sweet Hereafter," wrote of his characters heading down Falls of the Neuse Road, "until they arrived at a territory known as the Harricanes, which was not on any map and did not have a name to announce it like Lemly or Bayleaf because it was not a legitimate or particular place like Lemly and Bayleaf were legitimate and particular places, even though just barely." In the old days, says Mr. Scarborough, nobody liked to admit they lived in the Harricanes: "It had a reputation of being a pretty rough neighborhood. Nobody wanted to admit they lived there. So wherever they lived, the Harricanes was somewhere else." In Mr. Pearson’s book, the roads "curled and turned and wound up and wound out through the very heart of the Harricanes though the heart of the Harricanes was the sort of place you could not know you were in until you were out of it." Driving along the twisty gravel roads, the Harricanes have an Appalachian feel. Unpainted clapboard houses and the occasional log outbuilding alternate with new suburban ranches. Cinder block chicken houses attest to the farmers’ defeat by the stony soil; rather than scratch the dirt, they farmed above ground. "There were junked cars in the woods," wrote Mr. Pearson, "and old appliances and regular trash and garbage strewn down the banks of nearly all the roadside gullies. Chickens ran loose like squirrels, and off the road beside the houses the hogs and pigs were pinned up with planks and wire and most anything else that would take a nail." Everyone here has his favorite Harricanes story. The legends extend to the name. "I’ve heard speculation it’s a derivation of ‘harridan’—rough people." says Mr. Scarborough. "Or maybe it was rough like a hurricane; in the native tongue, like a Harikin." Others are partial to the wild weather theory. Once, a long time ago - how long ago? oh, a long time ago - a hurricane is said to have leveled these parts. "It was before my time," Mr. Mitchell says. "Back in the ’20s, maybe." But Bayard Bragg Jr., a local poultry farmer who has come into Mitchell’s store for a Mountain Dew, says this legendary hurricane blew through in the 1890s. He plonks down into one of the blue plastic chairs that Mr. Mitchell keeps in the front of the store for customers; it’s that kind of store. The defunct Arkland amusement park lies just down the road.

Granville Connections 95 GCGS 1746, Inc. September 2016

"Daddy said there was this lady, she was in the bed with a little baby when the hurricane come through," he says. "It blew the house away and landed the mama and the baby in the top of the tree in the back yard. Not a scratch on them." A while later, those assembled discuss an infamous Harricanes resident: "He’s in the chicken business, heh, heh." They laugh and wink. This can mean one of two things. It turns out the gentleman in question raises fighting cocks. But it also could have meant he was a moonshiner. The steep land favored whiskey over crops, says Mr. Scarborough: "The land’s so sorry you couldn’t grow anything there, except for a little com in the bottom land and some broiler chickens. There’s lots of creeks and streams - you gotta have water to run a still - and it was remote enough you didn’t have people running through the woods." Mr. Scarborough’s feed company would sell farmers baby chicks on credit and also furnish the com-based feed. The farmers would raise and sell the birds to pay for the feed and chicks. But now and again in the Harricanes, "it would get to be about chicken-cashing time, and the bam would bum down. That’s where a lot of our chicken feed went—into whiskey mash," Mr. Scarborough says. Salesmen out in the field would sometimes return with a sample of white lightning, he says: "Some of it was pretty smooth, depending on whether they used copper stills or automobile radiators. Course you could smell it on somebody's breath for nearly a week. For some reason it had a strong odor, and you could smell it coming out of the pores." After the leaves fell from the trees in winter, revenue agents used to fly around the Harricanes. A native desire for privacy strengthened among the locals. "They told you if you didn’t have business in there, stay out," Mr. Scarborough says. "It was their domain, and you had no business there. They didn’t want anyone interfering, so they just kept other people out. Strangers just weren’t welcome." Harricanes folk are of the same English-Scots-Irish stock that peopled the Appalachian mountains, observers say. Like the Hatfields and the McCoys, revenge could be part of the Harricanes code. "If they didn’t like somebody, they’d shoot him," Mr. Scarborough says. "His people, in turn, took revenge. If they’d been wronged, they’d go to any lengths to avenge it. Yet I guess you could say they were very loyal people, they never told on each other. They were fiercely independent farmers." But these days there is a new cash crop in the Harricanes - real estate. Many residents have done quite well for themselves selling the stony land to suburbanites. As Raleigh pushes northward, scrub land once too poor to farm now sells for $2,500 to $5,000 an acre. Lots may go for as much as $25,000. It’s legal and it’s lucrative. And if a fellow’s privacy is being invaded by the influx of flatlanders, well, one can always move. Down the road just a little bit.

History of Wilton NC

There was a family named Wilton who lived a mile from what is now known as Wilton, on highway 96 south. I have been told that is where Wilton got its name. These people ran an inn known as the Wilton Inn. The Hanson Harris family lived at the Inn after the Wiltons. During the late 1800's the Inn was burned during the war. It is believed the Yankees saw the Harris’s cook go to a room upstairs where cotton was kept to hide and that night the Inn was burned. A two story dwelling was built back at another site, which has been known in the 1900's as the E. N. Gooch Farm. This house has been burned in the last several years. (House was located on west side of highway 96 at curve where you turn onto Old Franklinton Road.) Old Wilton consisted of a post office which was opened only three days a week. Samuel Usry, grandfather of Miss Ruth Strother, was the postmaster. Mr. Usry got the job as postmaster because he was wounded in the war. There was one grocery store owned and operated by the Harris family. The cotton gin was run by Robert Harris and there was a tobacco factory operated by Louis Harris. For some reason the store closed and the tobacco factory owner went broke, losing around $5,000.00. It was around 1855 when Wilton was moved to its present location. There was a general merchandise store which sold almost anything anyone wanted including groceries, clothing, furniture, and farming tools. This store was owned by Walton Harris. A lady from Baltimore came to work at the store as a millinery. Her name was Emma Shepherd. She would make many hats each season and have a show at the beginning of the season. She married Louis Harris. He at this time ran a drug store in Wilton. The general store was located at the present site of the Preddy Brothers Store. The drug store was located further down in the bottom. There was a grist mill just back of the store. The post office site was where the Herbert Harris house presently stands. A blacksmith shop, run by Robert "Bob" Overton Tippett, was located just across the road from the William Bragg store and was run from 1855 until the 1930's by some of the Tippetts. The other businesses mentioned earlier were destroyed by a cyclone in 1901. The drug store was being used as a school at the time of the cyclone. The cloud looked so bad that the teacher, Lena Harris, sent all the students home. Around 1895 the William Bragg store was built. It was run by Maurice Brum, Tom Royster, and Gooch brothers. Then Charlie Floyd and William H. Bragg bought the store and it was run by Mr. William Bragg’s family until around 1953. This store was in front of Evelyn Bragg Moore’s present home, her homeplace. The store building was later used as a chicken house and when Evelyn and Ernest Moore stopped raising chickens for eggs the store building was tom down. Another store was built at the site of the present grill and was known as Gooch and Bobbitt and was run by them until 1924. At this time W. D. Gooch bought out the store. This store was burned in 1928 and rebuilt. This store was run by Mr. Willie D. Gooch until 1954, when William A. Jenkins bought the store. This store was burned in 1957. Another store, the present cinder block building, was built back and William ran it until March of 1967 when he took over Lakeside Motel in Creedmoor. The store was run by several different individuals over the years. Then it was turned into a grill, and various ones have operated a grill in this building. The Gooches, Mr. Willie and Mrs. Bessie, moved to Wilton in 1909 from the Gooch homeplace a mile or two north of Wilton. They bought the Nat Faucett place which was located behind the store. Walton Harris lived here before the Faucetts. (Present home of Beth Jenkins Parrott.)

Granville Connections 97 GCGS 1746, Inc. September 2016

There was another blacksmith shop in Wilton from 1900 until 1935, operated by the Tippett family. It was one-tenth of a mile north of Wilton on the right. The first Wilton School was built right across the road from the Tippett home. It was a two-story white frame building built in 1916 and was used until 1924. In 1924 a new red brick school was built. This brick building was used until December 1986. By 1946, the first Wilton School, the two-story white frame building, was moved up the road to the site of the brick two-story building. The Junior Order and Grange used the upstairs and the first floor was used as the school cafeteria. Later a new cafeteria was built, and this old school building was used by the community for various activities - wedding showers, baby showers, Home Demonstration Club meetings, and in the 1970's and 80's once a month on Saturdays the Grange sponsored a community get-together/dance for the families and the local Cloggers were always there to dance for the crowd. In January of 1987, students moved into a new one-story building behind the two story building. That spring, the old buildings were tom down In 1950, Herbert Harris and his family moved to Wilton. Herbert Harris bought the Joies (J.R.) Gooch house and land. The house was built by Joies Gooch in 1925. Mr. Gooch died in 1944, and his wife, Dora, died in 1948. Herbert Harris, not related to the earlier Harris families, operated Wilton Grocery and Service Station until 1959. After years of renting the store, in 1993 Herbert Harris’s grandsons, Glenn and Jeffrey Preddy, began operating the store and became owners. At the present time, they rent the store to other store keepers. Otis Allen Jenkins built a car wash at Wilton in 1973. The car wash was located in the northeast comer of highways 96 and 56. It was operated by the Jenkins family until 1974. The car wash was tom down and a Citgo Service Station was built on the site. This information was provided by Margaret Gooch Jenkins, Evelyn Bragg Moore, and Mabel Allen Harris.

History of Wilton School

The name for Wilton School came from the village of Wilton, which had some residences, a post office, and a clothing store around 1900. In 1901, a tornado blew away the post office and the clothing store. The name Wilton is believed to have come from England with the early settlers of this area in Granville County. The schools for the white children in the Brassfield Township were consolidated at Wilton in 1916. Some of those schools in the Brassfield Township were Brassfield, Banks, Grove Hill, Tar River, Grey Rock, Corinth, Mt. Carmel and Grissom (known locally as Dr. Sykes School, since Dr. Sykes, a local medical doctor, was very interested in this particular school located near his home). Some of the pupils at Pleasant Grove and Bailey came to Wilton School. Others from those schools attended Creedmoor or a Wake County school near their home. The first building was a white frame one built in 1916. In March, C. N. Floyd, representing the Junior Order and Woodmen of the World, offered the county $500 from each organization to help build a two-story school provided these organizations could have use of the second story for their meetings. In 1932 that building, located in front of Ernest Tippett's home (next to Virginia and Pender Woodlief's), was tom down and the materials used to construct classrooms and a soup kitchen on the first floor. The second floor was to be used for meetings of the Woodmen of the World and the Junior Order. Wilton Grange #718 paid for the paint for this building as this fraternal organization would also use this facility for its meetings. Graham B. Allen was paid 75cents per day to oversee the WPA workers performing the task of tearing down the building and the reconstruction at the new site. The

Granville County Board of Education approved the exchange of the old school site of one acre for one acre adjoining the present site as agreed to by Abner Newton, landowner. In 1924, Wilton High School was constructed, being a brick two-story building. A gymnasium, built by WPA workers, was constructed in 1934. In 1938, the wings were added on the north and south sides of the building, giving four additional classrooms. In 1949, a shop and classrooms for agriculture students and community farmers were built. In 1952, classrooms for home economics and the cafeteria were built. In 1960, a group of citizens from the southern part of Granville County appeared before the County Board of Education requesting consolidation of the high schools of Creedmoor, Stem and Wilton. The last graduating class of Wilton High School was the Class of 1962. In the fall of 1962, students in grades 9-12 started attending South Granville High School. In 1972, kindergarten was added, and students in grade 8 were transferred to Hawley School. In the early 80's, the seventh graders were transferred to Hawley School. On December 16, 1985, ground breaking ceremonies occurred for a one-story building to house students in grades K- 6. In the new building, there would be fourteen classrooms, adequate library and office facilities, a cafeteria and a multi-purpose room. The students and staff moved into the new, modem, facility in January of 1987. Jannie Harris Preddy was principal of the school at this time. It was in the spring of 1987 that ALL the buildings in the front of the new school building (main building, gym, Ag. Shop, cafeteria/Home Ec., white two-story framed building and the cannery building) were all torn down, leaving space for the parking area and playground area.
