Books - Primary Resources Specialized 1. Sweet Anticipation: Music and the Psychology of Expectation (Bradford Books) by David Huron - describes a set of psychological mechanisms involving the psychological theory of expectation and illustrates how these mechanisms work in the case of music.

• Spends a lot of time defining the topic (the nature of expectation in terms of pitch, rhythm, context, etc.,and how it functions in the brain) before discussing how to create predictability, surprise and tension. VERY USEFUL especially the chapters on creation. I really like this writer.

2. Audio Culture: Readings in Modern Music – Christoph Cox - explores the interconnections among such forms as minimalism, indeterminacy, musique concrète, free improvisation, experimental music, avant-rock, dub reggae, Ambient music, HipHop, and Techno. The concern here is philosophical, musical, and historical.

• A lot of good essays of historical importance that would be useful if a paper is required (as in Composition II as it now stands). Other essays are relevant to contemporary concerns related to electronic production and reproduction. A couple are useful in terms of defining minimalism. Kyle Gann’s in particular. Authors include Jacque Attali, John Cage, Edgard Varese, Morton Feldman, Pierre Schaeffer, Brian Eno R. Murray Schaeffer, John Zorn, Ornette Coleman, Steve Reich.

3. Sound Art: Beyond Music, Between Categories – Alan Licht - traces the history of this form of art which draws from the worlds of visual art and music; highlights the convergence of indie bands such as Sonic Youth with the art world; looks at the critical cross-pollination that has led to some of the most important and challenging art being produced today, including work by Christian Marclay, LaMonte Young, Janet Cardiff, Rodney Graham, and Laurie Anderson.

• The description (convergence of indie bands with art world, cross-pollination) seems relevant to the direction that the composition department is heading in.

Haunted Weather: Music, Silence, and Memory – David Toop, Serpent's Tail (July 1, 2004)

• Is it valid to classify audio recordings of wind or electrical hum as musical compositions? In Haunted Weather, David Toop asks these questions and gauges the impact of new technology on contemporary music's sound.

• Epitaph, written for a 31-piece ensemble, was the masterwork of!composer/bassist Charles Mingus. The extended suite is comprised of multiple movements reflecting a wealth of compositional styles (not just jazz) that demonstrate Mingus' invaluable contribution to 20th-Century American music. Since its last performance 15 years ago, additional movements have been discovered which were originally intended to be a part of the work. This unique 500-page score includes these missing movements along with historical and program notes. Prepared and edited under the guidance of Gunther Schuller and Sue Mingus, it provides a monumental resource for study and analysis.

Books – Secondary Resources

Specialized 1. Music and Probability – David Temperly

- From the introduction “…an understanding of how probabilities shape music perception, and indeed music itself, is the underlying mission of this book.”

Very clearly written and organized. Focusses on tonality and meter. Gets fairly detailed so needs to be studied rather than skimmed. Good for focused research. Having said that, skimming can produce inspiration/insight.

2. The Cognition of Basic Musical Structures – David Temperly, 2001 - computer modeling of basic aspects of musical cognition: meter, phrase structure, counterpoint, pitch spelling, harmony, and key. Same author as No. 2. His book above refers to this one so might be good to have both.

3. Musimathics, Volumes 1 and 2 – Gareth Loy - designed for musicians who find their art increasingly mediated by technology; presents the materials of music (notes, intervals, and scales); the physical properties of music (frequency, amplitude, duration, and timbre); the perception of music and sound (how we hear); and music composition.

Volume 1 explores basic relationships between music and math. Volume 2 gets into digital sound, sampling, fourier analysis, filtering, sound synthesis. Especially useful/necessary for programming. Good background for mixing sound.

4. Microsound – Curtis Roads - Covering all aspects of composition with sound particles (lasting less than one-tenth of a second), Microsound offers composition theory, historical accounts, technical overviews, acoustical experiments, descriptions of musical works, and aesthetic reflections. Computer music applications specifically, but bound to inspire ideas on texture, elasticity of melody and voice-leading… Noise, Water, Meat: A History of Sound in the Arts – Douglas Kahn

• examines the history, philosophies, politics, patterns, technology, sociology, and impact of sound in art as well as the influence of aurality on various forms of art and cultural thought, the fluid boundaries between the concepts of noise and music, and Western vs. Eastern definitions of the voice

5. Spaces Speak, Are You Listening?: Experiencing Aural Architecture - Integrates contributions from a wide range of disciplines— architecture, music, acoustics, evolution, anthropology, cognitive psychology, audio engineering; establishes the concepts and language of aural architecture. Chapters 4 and 5 discuss the relationship between composition and space as well as the realization of virtual space and the flexibility this lends to composing. Creates an awareness of the importance of the consideration of physical space in the compositional process.

Page 50: Grant MacEwan University Research Project

6. Resonance: Essays on the Intersection of Music and Architecture – Mikesch W Muecke, Miriam S. Zach - ranges from historiographical and theoretical explorations of the relations between music and architecture via translations of architectural spaces into music to analytical case studies of architectural spaces for musical performance. 7. Music and Architecture – Iannis Xenakis Aesthetics of Total Serialism: Contemporary Research from Music to Architecture (The Information Technology Revolution in Architecture) Markus Bandur - refers to more than just a technical process for composing, rather it offers one possibility of creatively integrating knowledge on man and nature into works of art. 8. The Fundamentals of Sonic Arts and Sound Design (Fundamentals (Ava)) by Tony Gibb - Topics covered include new and radical approaches to sound recording, performance, installation works and exhibitions, plus visits with sonic artists and sound designers. Jazz

1. Composing for the Jazz Orchestra by William Russo 2. Jazz: Theory and Practice by Richard L. Lawn

Film 1. The Emerging Film Composer: An Introduction to the People, Problems, and Psychology of the Film Music Business - Richard Bellis relevant for the Music Career Management stream 2. The Reel World: Scoring for Pictures - Jeff Rona A lot of practical information organized in three sections: Creative Process, Technology, and Career. Creates an awareness of what’s involved, but doesn’t clearly break down the process (ie. the steps in creating a film score are…). Of course, students could work that out over the course on an assignment. 3. Overtones and Undertones: Reading Film Music - Royal S. Brown invites readers not only to hear the film score, but to understand it in relation to what they see; close readings of several of the best film/score interactions, including Psycho, Laura, The Sea Hawk, Double Indemnity, and Pierrot le Fou. 4. Knowing The Score: Film Composers Talk About the Art, Craft, Blood, Sweat, and Tears of Writing for Cinema by David Morgan - topics include getting started in the movie-music business, collaborating with film directors, creating distinctive as well as appropriate music for a film, researching to score historical films, orchestration, adapting pre-existing music, and recording. Presented as interviews, so it’s all anecdotal as opposed to clearly stating “Here’s what you do and here’s how you do it.” An interesting read and the composers are generous with information and advice.

5. Advanced Techniques for Film Scoring - by Earle Hagen 6. Sound Design: The Expressive Power of Music, Voice and Sound Effects in

Page 51: Grant MacEwan University Research Project

Cinema by David Sonnenschein 7. The Soul of Cinema: An Appreciation of Film Music – Larry M. Timm - explains the various functions of music in film and describes the roles of producers, directors, and shows how they each relate to the composer and the musical score for a given film.

Popular 1. Popular Music in Theory – Keith Negus 2. Interpreting Popular Music – David Brackett 3. The Triumph of Vulgarity: Rock Music in the Mirror of Romanticism – Robert Pattison 13. Running With the Devil: Power, Gender and Madness in Heavy Metal Music – Robert Walser 4. Rip It Up And Start Again: Postpunk 1978-1984 – Simon Reynolds 5. Tape Delay: Confessions from the Eighties Underground, Charles Neal, SAF Publishing, 1987

• Cutting edge of the Eighties underground 6. No Wave by Marc Masters

• From early pioneers like Suicide and Glenn Branca, to forgotten treasures like Red Transistor and Bush Tetras

7. Avant Rock: Experimental Music From The Beatles To Bjork – Bill Martin • Bill Martin outlines the entire phenomenon, from Yoko Ono, King Crimson, and

Velvet Underground through the dynamic of progressive rock and punk in the 1970's and the watershed work of Brian Eno, to contemporary figures who continue to push the boundaries of rock: Sonic Youth, Stereolab, Merzbow, Bjork

8. The Downtown Book: The New York Art Scene 1974-1984 – Marvin J. Taylor • This book charts the web of influences that shaped the generation of experimental

and outsider artists working in Downtown New York during the crucial decade from 1974 to 1984.

*These first five books seem more appropriate for a history class. They could, however, be relevant to the following type of composition assignment:

Write a 3 minute piece that incorporates the three main musical streams present in the downtown New York art scene in the 1970s and 1980s. Instructions can be as detailed as the instructor likes, but the requirements imply knowledge of recordings, composers, scores, etc. These types of books act as references, point to sources; the assignment encourages exploration of possibilities and knowledge of context as opposed to a general composition assignment that simply requires writing whatever you want. The latter is, of course, useful for different reasons.

Page 52: Grant MacEwan University Research Project

Technology 1. Capturing Sound: How Technology Has Changed Music (Roth Family Foundation Music in America Book) by Mark Katz - explores how recording technology has encouraged new ways of listening to music, led performers to change their practices, and allowed entirely new musical genres to come into existence. Chapters 1 – 5: more or less a history of recording. Chapter 6 discusses turntablism nicely. Chapter 7- a useful look at the politics of sampling and a thoughtful discussion of a computer music piece by Paul Lansky(includes human perception, form, role of audience). Also a look at Fatboy Slim’s sampling technique and an analysis of “Fight the Power” by Public Enemy. A convincing argument forf sampling as an art of transformation.

2. Strange Sounds: Music, Technology and Culture by Timothy Taylor Weaves together interdisciplinary attention to musical developments-- including Pierre Schaeffer's musique concrete, space age pop, world music sampling, electronic dance music, and the MP3 phenomenon--together with a commitment to understanding how musicians and listeners use technology

3. Ocean of Sound – David Toop, Serpent's Tail (June 1, 2001)

• Ocean of Sound begins in 1889 at the Paris Exposition when Debussy first heard Javanese music performed. An ethereal culture absorbed in perfume, light and ambient sound developed in response to the intangibility of 20th century communications. David Toop traces the evolution of this culture, through Erik Satie to the Velvet Undergound; Miles Davis to Jimi Hendrix.

New Media 1. Digital Sound Processing for Music and Multimedia (Music Technology) (Music Technology) – Ross Kirk, Focal Press (May 5, 1999) - Provides an introduction to the nature, synthesis and transformation of sound which forms the basis of digital sound processing for music and multimedia. Background information in computer techniques is included so that you can write computer algorithms to realise new processes central to your own musical and sound processing ideas. Sounds good, but is from 1999 so might be out of date. Though I’m not sure if “the nature, synthesis and transformation of sound” goes out of date…haven’t found any updates.

Acoustic and MIDI Orchestration for the Contemporary Composer – Andrea Perjolo, Richard DeRosa Other 1. After Sibelius: Studies in Finnish Music – Tim Howell, Ashgate Publishing; illustrated edition (December 11, 2006)

• investigation into Finnish music combining elements of composer biography and detailed analysis within the broader context of cultural and national identity… Howell explores the Finnish attitude to new music, in both its composition and reception, uncovering an enlightened view of the value of creativity from which many other nations may benefit. I think this is important in terms of studying the conditions necessary to create/encourage compositional activity on this scale. Finland seems to be ahead of everyone in this regard.

2. Arcana: Musicians on Music – John Zorn (editor), Granary Books (January 2, 2000) 3. Arcana II: Musicians on Music – John Zorn (editor), Hips Road/Tzadik (September 1, 2007) 4. Arcana III: Musicians on Music – John Zorn (editor), Hips Road/Tzadik (September 1, 2008)

Expressionism/12-tone 1. Schoenberg: Pierrot Lunaire – Johnathon Dunsby - The book describes the artistic environment around the turn of the century from which Pierrot emerged, and discusses Schoenberg's working methods and intentions in composition. Irony and Sound: The Music of Maurice Ravel (Eastman Studies in Music) – Stephen Zank, University of Rochester Press (October 1, 2009) - illuminates these and other works of Maurice Ravel through several of the composer's fascinations: dynamic intensification, counterpoint, orchestration, exotic influences on Western music, and an interest in multi-sensorial perception. Connecting all these fascinations, Zank argues, is irony. Kind of hard to argue, so all the more fascinating Jazz/swing 1. Monk's Music: Thelonious Monk and Jazz History in the Making (Roth Family Foundation Music in America Imprint) – Gabriel Solis combines cultural theory, biography, and musical analysis to shed new light on Monk's music and on the jazz canon itself.
