LANSING: In her weeklyradio address, Governor Jen-nifer M. Granholm remindedMichigan citizens that ahigher state minimum wagewent into effect Sunday, July1, 2007, as the result of legis-lation she called for andsigned into law last year. Theincrease will result in a raisefor more than half a millionMichigan workers.
“What a great step forwardfor Michigan’s families,”Granholm said. “This in-crease will put a little moremoney in the pockets ofMichigan citizens who areworking hard every day topay for rent, to fill up theirgas tanks, and to put food onthe table for their kids.”
The state minimum wagewill rise from $6.95 to $7.15an hour. It will rise onceagain to $7.40 an hour on July1, 2008, the third and finalincrease mandated by the newlaw. Before Granholm signedthe 2006 measure, the stateminimum wage was $5.15 anhour, the federally-mandatedminimum which had not beenincreased since 1997.
Granholm emphasized theimportance of the minimumwage to families and
Michigan’s economy, notingthat economists report thatrising wages can stimulateeconomic activity throughoutthe state.
She also underscored thatincreasing the minimumwage is merely one aspect ofher comprehensive plan todiversify and growMichigan’s economy. Othercritical aspects of the planinclude the state’s newearned income tax credit,higher standards in our pub-lic schools, measures to makecollege more affordable,such as the Michigan Prom-ise scholarship, the 21st Cen-tury Jobs Fund to diversify
