East Ayrshire Recruitment Fair S4,S5,S6 Pupils

The East Ayrshire Recruitment Fair will be held in the Grand Hall on Thursday 19th April from 9:30 till 12 with the first hour being reserved for school (possibly from 9:15am). Job Centre Plus will have vacancies displayed, some local employers will be in attendance, all Employability Fund Training providers have been invited and Modern Apprenticeship providers will also be asked.

BASKETBALL

Basketball club will not be on this Thursday but will resume on Thursday 26th April.

East Ayrshire School Libraries Graphic Novel Project 2018

Loudoun Academy, Monday May 14th and Tuesday May 15th,

10.30am – 2.30pm (tbc)

Could S3 mentor teachers please relay the following information to S3 pupils? Day 1: Workshop with established graphic novel artist/writer with the aim of

pupils planning and storyboarding their own strip

Day 2: Pupils produce their final comic strip

The finished works will be printed as one comic book with each pupil and school receiving a copy. The book may also be made available online through, or linked

to, each school’s website.

There are only 4 spaces available so I would ask that only pupils who are passionate about art and/or writing sign up.

If you are interested, please see Miss Smyth in the library as soon as possible.

Ghost the Musical

"Ghost the Musical" rehearsals are now on until 5.30pm every Tuesday and Wednesday after school.

If you have signed up to be involved in stage crew please attend a meeting after school on Thursday the 19th of April in G138 (Miss Smith's room)

LIBRARY VOLUNTEERS

S1 and S2 pupils who kindly volunteered to help in the library before the Easter holidays should see the Lunchtime Volunteer timetable which is now on the 'What's on' board in the library.

Volunteers will be helping 1 day a week from 1.20pm to 1.40pm at lunchtime. They will be helping with activities like creating artwork for the library, redecorating display boards, choosing 'Book of the Week', and tidying and sorting books.

It's not too late to volunteer. Anyone who would still like to help should see Miss Smyth.

Recruitment open evening - Monday 23rd April 2018 at

Drop off points will be in this order:

Gender Roles Why gender roles are sexist and bad

What are gender roles?

Gender roles are when we as a society stereotype the way people should act or the things they like based on their gender. This can include:

Girls being very sensitive, shy and quiet

Boys being embarrassed about showing emotion, being tough and liking sport

Why are gender roles bad?

Gender roles in society are fed to us at a young age and teach us myths that obviously aren’t true. “Boys don’t cry.” “You run like a girl.”

Task

Can you think of any other gender roles? In your group come up with as many as you can.

Girls shouldn’t… Boys shouldn’t…

Examples

Girls shouldn’t… Have ‘masculine’ jobs. Be funny. Play aggressive sports. Take charge. Have male friends. Wear revealing clothes. Swear. And many more…

Boys shouldn’t… Wear make up. Like musical theatre. Do gymnastics or dance. Show emotions. Have long hair. Clean the house. Make dinner. And many more…

If not, why do we think this way?

This is the result of gender roles.

Even though these may be automatic responses, we as a society can still try to think differently and be the change we want to see in the world.

Start with the (wo)man in the mirror – challenge yourself next time you make an assumption about someone based on their gender and be more open minded about their abilities.
