On August 15, 2012 a group of dignitaries gathered at the East Overlook to Brown Bridge Pond to kick off the largest dam removal project in Michigan history. The ceremony welcomed United States

Senator Carl Levin, Director of the US Fish and Wildlife Service Daniel Ashe, United States Bureau of Indian Affairs Regional Biologist Bob Jackson, and Traverse City Mayor Michael Estes. Over the next five months, a two and a half mile section of the Boardman River was “reborn,” reclaimed from the bottom of Brown Bridge Pond and returned to its former channel and floodplain. On January 14, 2013 the project management team declared the Dam Removal and re-channelization project

to be substantively complete. With the Brown Bridge Dam now gone, the District has been tasked with leading the restoration and long term care of 191 acres of new public parkland. The decisions and actions of the coming years will shape the future character and public understanding of this unique and beautiful ecosystem.

While the Brown Bridge Dam Removal captured the headlines in 2012, the Conservation District accomplished a number of significant additional projects within the Boardman River Watershed including the removal of a perched culvert on Miller Creek

within Garfield Township’s Boardman Valley Nature Preserve and the restoration of a severe erosion site on the North Branch of the Boardman River. The Conservation District also consulted with Munson Medical Center on the daylighting of Kid’s Creek at the new Cowell Family Cancer Center. This project will create a meandering system with a vegetated floodplain adding nearly 300 feet to the existing channel. These natural features will support a variety of terrestrial and aquatic organisms and will provide essential habitat for fish to move upstream.

Supporting Native Habitat Diversity

Big Changes.Big Accomplishments.

Reunited at Long Last Training Future Great Lakes Stewards

Two years ago the Grand Traverse Conservation District received nearly a million dollars through the Great Lakes

Restoration Initiative to initiate a six-county collaborative charged with mitigating

the impacts of invasive species. In that short time, the “Invasive Species Network” has made great strides towards protecting and restoring Northwest Michigan ecosystems.

In Grand Traverse County alone, we pulled, lopped, or otherwise treated populations of all “top 20 invasive plants” within the Brown Bridge Quiet Area, East Creek Reserve, Miller Creek Natural Area, and the Natural Education Reserve. We also worked throughout the region to remove garlic mustard, a highly pervasive plant that inhibits the regeneration of native tree seedlings while aggressively competing with understory plants such as trillium.

Together with our partners, we have achieved a 78% reduction in invasive phragmites populations along the shoreline of Grand Traverse Bay, and worked with private property owners to treat roughly 90 stands of Japanese knotweed and roadside phragmites. Both species pose long-term risks to fragile wetland communities.

We often jest that “plants do not obey property boundaries.” It is therefore critical that we reach out and engage our whole community in protecting the wetlands, woodlands and meadows that sustain the economy and culture of our region. With this goal in mind, we have held over 165 public events and have opened a dialogue with regional nurseries to explore opportunities to guide our community away from invasive ornamental plants.

A recent boon to our efforts came this past autumn when two multi-county invasive species management initiatives joined forces to form the Northwest Michigan Invasive Species Network. With renewed funding from the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, this new collaborative will target high priority invasive species like kudzu, phragmites, Japanese knotweed, and garlic mustard in Manistee, Benzie, Leelanau, and Grand Traverse Counties.

2012 was an exciting year for sustainable agriculture in Northwest Michigan. Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse and Leelanau Counties saw a total of 33 re-verifications and 22 new verifications through the

Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program (MAEAP). These included all seven “Wineries of Old Mission Peninsula” as well as several cherry, apple, row crop, livestock and greenhouse producers.

Grand Traverse was one of only two Conservation Districts in the State selected for the 2012 pilot of the Michigan Safe Food Risk Assessment program. Over 30 local growers participated in the program with three receiving a Certificate of Completion recognizing their Good Agricultural Practices. The Risk Assessment was recognized in the Taste the Local Difference Guide and was highlighted at numerous meetings across the region.

Our staff also was busy this year assisting the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) in collecting routine water samples and supporting household hazardous waste collections. These important programs help protect our ground and surface waters while also safeguarding the health of local families.

2012 saw the transition of Dan Busby to his new position as MAEAP Verifier for the MDARD. Dan had recently received Farm Bureau’s inaugural “Agriculture Ecology Champion Award” for his outstanding work and positive relationships with our local growers. In his new capacity, Dan will continue to support farmers in Northwest lower Michigan, and will interact regularly with the District’s two MAEAP Technicians, Garrett Coggon and Jessica Rasch.

“Ms. Courtney…do we really have to go outside?” This is my least favorite sentence in the whole world. “Absolutely. We go outside...everyday...with every program…every season, AND it’s going to be GREAT!” This year our education

programs continued to get our visitors outside and engaged. Throughout the course of the year, we shared the great outdoors with more than 1800 students through 48 field trip programs, including our Nature Education for Students and Teachers “NEST” Programs.

We shared our summer with over 70 kids aged 4-14 who learned all about nature while interacting with our staff and other experts. Not forgetting our younger explorers, we sparked curiosity and wonder in the natural world with nearly 250 “Peepers” in our weekly pre-k program. Aside from having an absolute blast and making new friends, our programs continued to meet Michigan Grade Level Content Expectations to ensure that what students are learning here at the Nature Center aligns with the curriculum in their classroom.

Throughout the year, we introduced our students to accurate information and positive role models and we encouraged them to think critically and take personal responsibility for caring for the natural world—each in their own way. When we combined all of the lessons, excitement, and the outdoors together… magic happened. It changed “do we have to go outside…” to “CAN we go outside…” “Absolutely! This year, next year and every year after.”

Grand Traverse Stewardship Initiative (GTSI)

The Grand Traverse Stewardship Initiative (GTSI) is part of a larger statewide program called The Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative and serves as one of eight regional hubs in Michigan working to increase stewardship of the Great Lakes. We support school-community partnerships by providing professional development for area teachers that promotes place-based education focused on water stewardship.

We completed our third year of GTSI in June of 2012, with nine teams of teachers from ten area school celebrating their stewardship project outcomes with students, family members, and community partners at the Spring Celebration. In August, we welcomed 18 new GTSI teachers to our summer institute, a week-long training that kicks of each program year. At the institute teachers learn about water and watersheds, meet key community partners, and begin to identify water-related needs that provide the basis for the year-long projects they will implement with their students. During 2012-2013, twelve teams of teachers in ten area school are helping over 1500 students become active eco-citizens who are contributing to the health of our community.
