areas in our watershed for the benefit of our wildlife and water.

In the coming years, the human population of the Grand River watershed is predicted to increase dramatically. As we contemplate this growth, we often think of human, social and economic capital.

Now it’s time to think about our natural capital. A healthy environment is a strong counterpoint to the burgeoning growth in our watershed of communities including Kitchener-Waterloo, Cambridge, Brantford, Guelph and Caledonia. The lands around the Grand River, and its tributaries, are a mix of dynamic cities, rich agricultural land and important wildlife areas.

We are one of only a few watersheds in Ontario where the primary source of water for our towns and cities is surface water - our river - and groundwater. It is critical that we preserve these resources and ensure that human use is

WELCOME MESSAGE

balanced with consideration for the lands and waters that sustain us.

Public concern for our environment has never been higher. Whether it is concern for clean air, the protection of our precious resources, or a desire to improve on the vitality of our communities by encouraging active living in the outdoors, people are motivated by a desire to ensure that our natural world is still intact for the future.

If you are receiving this because you have made a gift, thank you. If you are considering doing so, we offer our encouragement. It is the investment of thousands of people that leads to a better quality of life for us all – now, and for generations to come.

Sincerely,

Kerry Long David HalesPresident Vice President

01/02

It is critical that we preserve our natural resources and ensure that human use is balanced with consideration for the lands and waters that sustain us.

We are pleased to present the Grand River Conservation Foundation’s Annual Report for the year 2006.

Our mandate is to enhance the natural values of the Grand River watershed and to encourage people to enjoy and learn from the outdoors, through support for projects of the Grand

River Conservation Authority.

Since our inception more than $6 million has been raised. Through contributions from a concerned community, we have provided funds to send thousands of children to curriculum-based outdoor education programs, to build and enhance outdoor learning facilities, to create and maintain trails and rich natural areas for public enjoyment, and to acquire and restore important natural

Nature Centres. The unveiling of the site at Apps’ Mill near Brantford was celebrated in tandem with the Nature Centre’s 25th Anniversary celebration. Students from Brantford and Brant County now have the opportunity to learn about how much energy is needed to support our everyday lives – and about the need to use these resources wisely.

In spring 2006, employees at Taylor & Grant Specialties Ltd. of Waterloo dedicated the Grant Erwin Waterfowl Viewing Tower at the Laurel Creek Nature Centre in Waterloo, to offer students and the public a better glimpse of wildlife in an area almost entirely surrounded by housing.

Funds provided by the community through GRCF gave elementary school students the opportunity to experience curriculum-based outdoor education programs at GRCA Nature Centres. 2006 marked the fourth of five years of funding to six School Boards provided by The Living Classroom – Campaign for Outdoor Education, ensuring that every child in three grades will have the opportunity to become one of tomorrow’s environmental ambassadors.

New and better learning facilities

A new dimension of environmental learning: In 2006, with funds provided by SC Johnson & Son and Ontario Power Generation, solar and wind demonstration sites were developed at the GRCA’s Apps’ Mill and Taquanyah

OUTDOOR EDUCATION

30,000 of our future environmental ambassadors got

their hands dirty and learned about our natural world

We plant the seeds of knowledge and care here. The kids come back and visit us; they tell us that they went on to environmental programs at university and college specifically because they loved our programs. Our world has a better future because of them.

welcomed the Wm Kipp Funeral Home as our newest Memorial Partner, helping to ensure that the Paris and Ayr areas of the Grand River watershed will be green for the benefit of future generations.

Our Grand River Conservancy Forest also provided opportunities for individuals to remember a loved one or celebrate a life event, through the “purchase” of a single tree in our watershed.

Trees provide wildlife habitat, clean our air, beautify our landscape and prevent erosion of our waterways – a great return at a low cost. A network of Memorial Partners throughout the Grand River watershed provide both a fitting tribute and an investment in future generations by making a per-family contribution to plant a tree. This investment supports the greening of our landscape and also ensures a steady stream of income to the GRCA’s Burford Tree Nursery, which provides our watershed with approximately 200,000 native trees per year.

The GRCF counted two milestones in 2006. First, we celebrated the tenth anniversary of partnership with the Schreiter-Sandrock Funeral Home, which has led to more than 4,000 trees planted in our watershed. Second, we

helped to improve water quality in Mill Creek at Taquanyah, the only cold water stream in Haldimand County west of Cayuga;

developed waterfowl habitat at Luther Marsh Wildlife Management Area, near the headwaters of the Grand River watershed.

By 2031, the Grand River watershed is expected to grow by 300,000 people. Economic expansion and our proximity to the Greater Toronto Area are fuelling this growth, making it more vital than ever that we protect source water areas and the best natural places for wildlife.

In 2006, investments made through GRCF supported three key restoration efforts. With funds from concerned donors, we:

provided funds to the GRCA to help restore 50 acres (20.5 ha) of provincially significant wetland near the mouth of the Grand River at the Dunnville Marsh;

Among other projects, in 2006 contributions made through the Grand River Conservation Foundation provided funds to improve the outdoor experience of thousands of people at:

the Gilbert MacIntyre & Son Memorial Area at the Rockwood Conservation Area,

the Dumfries Conservation Area in Cambridge,

the FWR Dickson Wilderness Area in North Dumfries,

and the Elora Cataract Trailway, which stretches forty- seven kilometers from Elora into the Credit River watershed.

Through a network of 75+ km of Rail Trails, a variety of passive lands and formal Conservation Areas, the GRCA offers myriad opportunities for people to enjoy outdoor experiences. In so doing, individuals and families gain an appreciation for nature, make social connections with friends and family, and participate in an active, healthy lifestyle.

Many of these opportunities are available at no cost to the public, yet they enrich our quality of life in many ways. Though donations from our community, the GRCF plays an important role in ensuring that the GRCA’s trails and natural areas remain in high quality condition for the benefit of hikers, cyclists, skiers and outdoor enthusiasts.

We got involved at Dumfries Conservation Area because we know that a balanced community needs high-quality natural places. It’s not just the company that is involved – our employees want to roll up their sleeves and do their part.

June 2006 marked the GRCF’s First Annual Golf Tournament at the Galt Country Club. Our inaugural Tourney was held in memory of Grant Erwin, longtime Foundation supporter and a key organizer of The Living Classroom – Campaign for Outdoor Education.

Participants enjoyed a day of exceptional golf, steak dinner and prizes at the beautiful Galt Country Club, raising $20,000 in support of the forestry programs at the GRCA’s Burford Tree Nursery, upkeep of the Elora Cataract Trailway and the Luther Marsh Wildlife Management Area.

The Grand River watershed -

Grand River watershed facts...

At about 6,800 km2, the Grand River watershed is one of the largest in southern Ontario.

The Grand River watershed is less than 1% of Ontario’s geographic size, but hosts more than 37% of its species at risk.

Land clearing in the 19th century reduced forest cover in the Grand River watershed to just 5% of the total area. Wide ranging efforts by many have since restored our watershed to about 19% forest cover.

Through careful management, water quality in the Grand River and its tributaries has increased dramatically. More than 80 species of fish are present in the river – about 50% of all species recorded in Canada.

The Grand winds almost 300 km from its source in Dufferin County to Port Maitland. It is the largest Canadian river in the Lake Erie drainage basin.

Foundation dollars support GRCA projects for which there are no or very limited public monies available.

In addition to its main commitment to the Grand River Conservation Authority, the GRCF also invests in the efforts of groups and citizens who want to improve their natural world.

Funded by the proceeds of the GRCF’s Grand Champions Endowment fund and the GRCA’s Thiess Riverprize, our 2006 Community Conservation Grants provided almost $9,000 to a variety of schools and community groups. These schools and groups undertook the following projects:

Forty children from Cambridge, Guelph and Brantford had the opportunity to enjoy four Eddie Lackenbauer Fishing Camps at the GRCA’s Shade’s Mills Conservation Area. Without the support of the community, these children would not have had this opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and form a foundation for appreciating our natural world.

Spring 2006 marked both the 11th annual Waterloo Wellington Children’s Groundwater Festival and the inaugural Brantford/Brant Children’s Water Festival. The GRCF was pleased to act as a Sponsor for both, providing more than 5,000 children with the opportunity for hands-on and fun learning about the importance of water to our daily lives.

Erik Glemser, an Environmental Biology student at the University of Guelph, was selected to receive the 2006SC Johnson Environmental Scholarship, which is offered to full time students who are in the third year of a conservation or environment-related field of study at a university in the Grand River watershed.
