Abstract

The Latzek Funeral Home Records include ten volumes that record burials of Grand Rapids, Michigan area residents. The volumes date from 1903-1961, which appear to cover two date series. The first series, vols. 1-5, runs from 1903 to 1921. The second series, vols. 6-10, runs from 1912-1961. The reasons for these separate date sequences may be determined with further research.

The volumes contain such data as the name of the deceased, the age at death, occupation, cause of death, funeral costs, parents' names. Additionally, correspondence, invoices, and other ephemera accompanying the death record were previously stapled to the pages of the associated deceased, as available. These have been removed and housed in archival folders in the collection. An alphabetical indexing to the record books is available with each volume.

Access to the ancillary documents is in Series II of this finding aid, first by record book, then alphabetically by name of the deceased. Felix W. Latzek was a part-time funeral director, who took over the business founded by his father, Frank Latzek. Felix is documented as also having been co-owner of the Derezinski Funeral Home with Chester L. Derezinski, which closed in 1974. The location of the Derezinski Funeral Home records is unknown. Of wider interest may be the records found here for Stanley Ketchel, the nationally known boxer who was murdered in 1910, with a large local funeral.

Series Descriptions

Series I. Record ledger books.

Subseries A. Books with date range 1903-1931.Includes volumes 1-5, for dates 1903 to 1921. There are some gaps in the dates between volumes, which may indicate missing information, or a vacation period for the firm, or other unknown reason.

Note the missing pages from vol. 1, pgs. 7-82.

Subseries B. Books with date range 1912-1961.Includes volumes 6-10, for dates 1912-1961. Generally, the dates appear to suggest a comprehensive run of records for this series.

Series II. Correspondence, invoices, misc. documents

Arranged by volume where the materials were found, and alphabetical by last name under the volume, giving the specific page where found.

This series includes correspondence, invoices and ephemera related to the burial of only a portion of the deceased. These items were previously stapled to the pages for the individual with whom they were associated. However, this practice was damaging to the items themselves, as well of the record book page, and are being removed for placement in archival folders.

As these are added to this collection, they will be listed by the record volume where found first, and then alphabetically by the name of the deceased.

History

Felix W. Latzek (1895-July 30, 1977) was a former Union Bank and Trust Co. manager and part-time funeral director. The Latzek Funeral Home was founded by Alex's father, Frank. Initially, the elder Latzek worked as undertaker, while Felix was the clerk. Felix also was the co-owner of the Derezinski Funeral Home with Chester L. Derezinski, but that business closed in 1974. Felix served in the U.S. Navy from 1917-1921. He was involved in several veteran's groups, such as the Catholic War Veterans and the Catholic Order of Foresters.

Index compiler Kathy Tabb (1992) lists the following locations, as documented on the registers in this collection.

Scope and Content

The volumes provide data on the funerals handled by the home. Data such as: name, address, occupation, age at death, cause of death, parents' names and birthplaces, place of interment and details of the costs involved.

Indexing was done by Kathy Tabb in 1992 for the Western Michigan Genealogical Society.
