EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
The Grand Papua Hotel recognises that our
activities have an effect on the environment
at local and global levels. The hotel strives
towards minimising the environmental
impact of our hotel operations through
introducing sustainable strategies and is
dedicated to implementing policies aimed
at improving the hotels environmental
performance, through reducing the use of
energy, water and waste.
This involves training and awareness
within the Grand Papua Hotel team, and
our suppliers. It is our purpose to maintain
a healthy environment by implementing
sustainability projects, and also practicing
and adhering to current procedures.
While achieving this goal we endeavour to
create a hotel where service, atmosphere
and comfort for our guests are rated
amongst the best in Papua New Guinea.
The Grand Papua Hotel is committed in
striving to achieve environmental and social
sustainability for the hotel.
In conjunction with striving to be the
first choice provider of luxury hotel
accommodation and facilities in Port
Moresby, The Grand Papua Hotel
recognises its environmental responsibility
by implementing the following best
practices.
• maximising the efficient use of all
resources (with a particular emphasis on
electricity, water and paper through our
fully integrated building management
system)
• minimising waste generation
• recycle and re use resources where
possible
• purchasing materials on sustainability
principles (where possible)
• be transparent in reporting practices to
the community and relevant guests
• providing training for staff to adopt
sustainability practices and to
incorporate them into the curriculum
• providing opportunities for staff to learn
and engage with sustainability issues
through training and programs in place
• continual improvement in our practices
for environmental sustainability and
benchmarking
• employing locally for persons living in
nearby communities
Grand Papua Hotel will continue to
review and implement our environmental
action plan to comply with all relevant
legislation and regulations, but also to
become a leader in our industry as we
strive to achieve the best practice in
accommodation sustainability.
SUSTAINABILITY POLICY
The following operational initiatives have
been introduced into our daily procedures
ENERGY
• Lights and other electrical equipment
are switched off when not required. This
includes all guest rooms after departure.
• The hotel, in anticipation to reduce
energy has provided each room with
separate air conditioning units, rather
than a central system. This ensures
these units are only in use when the
corresponding rooms are occupied.
• Set air conditioning to 24 degrees for
cooling.
• Drain and flush hot water tanks every 6
months to reduce the build up of scale
and deposits which reduce efficiency.
• Procedures are in place for air
conditioning and lighting in unused public
areas to be switched off unless required.
• All guest rooms are provided with
double glazed large windows to allow
natural lighting.
• Internal hotel room audits are done on a
rotating 2 monthly basis, which involves
communicating any maintenance issues
to engineering which are promptly
followed up.
• Turn off lights when you leave the room
for more than a few minutes.
• In guest rooms, desks placed in a position
to maximise the use of natural light.
• Refrigerator / freezer defrosted regularly
to prevent heavy icing.
• Where possible appliances turned off
when not in use. Not using the stand-
by option can save up to 50% of daily
energy use.
• Lint cleaned from the filter screens in
laundry drying machines. Blocked lint
screens reduce air flow, requiring the
drier to use more energy.
• Maintenance team conducting daily
checks of requirements of swimming
pools, appliances etc throughout the hotel.
WATER
• Using water in an efficient manner is
another key part of our environmental
programme.
• Water saving shower heads and tap flow
regulators are used throughout the hotel,
with no reduction in water pressure.
• All toilets are dual flush.
• Hand basins are equipped with restrictor
water flows.
• Encourage both staff and guests to
participate in water-saving measures.
• Guests are given the option of having
their linen change as required not daily to
reduce washing requirements, therefore
significant reduction in water usage.
• Encourage staff to turn off taps and
report all water leaks needing attention
immediately.
Papua New Guinea is a nation that remains largely uncanvassed and shrouded in mystery. When visitors travel to this remote country, its natural beauty and cultural vibrancy truly come to life.
The cultural riches and extraordinary
wilderness of PNG are a traveller’s delight.
Nowhere else in the world can one explore
such diversity in language and culture than
within this fascinating nation. Its unique
array of colourful tribespeople is echoed in
the region’s diverse landscape.
Papua New Guinea (PNG) lies on the
eastern half of the second largest island
in the world, and shares a border with
Indonesia. Fringed by spectacular coral
reefs, PNG is surrounded by thousands of
atolls and smaller islands, and experiences
the highest volcanic activity in the South
West Pacific region.
While PNG’s landmass is situated in the
tropics, running down the length of the
island’s rugged interior are mountain peaks
that, on occassion, experience snowfall. In
the Highlands, the mountainous terrain is so
dense and remote that the different groups
who migrated to the region developed their
own languages and tribal culture to reflect
their surrounds.
Lying just south of the equator, the climate
in PNG is tropical with the wet season
occurring December to March and the
dry season May to October. The seasons
are not as pronounced as in Asia so, while
the humidity can be high at times, the
temperatures rarely get too hot. There are,
however, exceptions to the region’s seasonal
rules with Alotau and Lae experiencing the
wet season when other regions are dry.
Additionally, Tabubil, nestled at the base of
the Star Mountains in the Western Province,
is known as the “umbrella town” because of
its persistent rainfall year round. To further
prove PNG’s diverse nature, the dry season
can be unpredictable across the mainland,
while the island provinces have a steadier
climate with milder temperatures and
infrequent rainfall.
PNG has a small population of
approximately 7.8 million people, yet no less
than 820 different languages are spoken
throughout the region. It comes as no
surprise then that a quarter of the world’s
languages herald from PNG. English, Pidgin
and Motu are the official languages of the
region. PNG’s remoteness has preserved a
traditional lifestyle, with many Papua New
Guineans still residing in small villages and
surviving on farming.
A myriad of fascinating cultures can still be
found in PNG from the famous Huli Wigmen
in the Highlands to the enigmatic tribes of
the Trobriand Islands. As a result, PNG has
sprouted a number of annual festivals that
celebrate the customs and costumes of the
beguiling locals.

Papua New Guinea is a bounty of natural attractions. Witness the magnificence of exotic fauna, trek some of the most rugged terrain in the world and discover stunning cave systems which have rarely been explored.
WILDLIFE
In the dark, steamy atmosphere of the
lowland jungles, a highly unique assortment
of tropical wildlife thrives. Most animals
inhabiting PNG are marsupials, which
are relatives to those found in Australia,
evolved to adapt to environmental changes.
Both locations share a common history
going back tens of millions of years, but
Australia is flat and has dried out whereas
PNG is wet and has become mountainous.
Native mammals in PNG include bats, tree
kangaroos, forest wallabies, echidnas and
bandicoots, as well as dolphins, whales and
dugongs (sea cows).
PNG is also renowned for its variety of
insects, and in particular its exquisite
butterflies. PNG is home to more than 700
different species of butterflies, more than
twice the number found in Europe. Well
known among naturalists and entomologists
are the magnificent birdwing butterflies,
which are indigenous to the region. With
a 30 centimetre wingspan, the Queen
Alexandra’s birdwing is the world’s largest
recorded butterfly and comes in a dazzling
array of colours. The species is currently
endangered due to its shrinking habitats.
PNG also has an outstanding assortment
of lizards and reptile species that includes
geckos, legless lizards, dragon and monitor
lizards as well 100 species of skinks,
approximately 110 species of snakes, two
species of crocodile and thirteen different

Many visitors to PNG are attracted to the
region for its birdwatching or ‘birding’ as
it’s known to enthusiasts. Considering
there are no less than 646 species on
record, it’s little wonder the activity is so
immensely popular. Boasting approximately
86 endemic species and 83 threatened
or quasi-threatened species, PNG is an
oasis for anyone who appreciates spotting
birdlife. The spectacular bird of paradise,
among so many other beautiful species, is
what brings serious birders to PNG. Known
for its flamboyant plumage, the bird of
paradise really is a sight to behold.
For visitors to Port Moresby who would like
to see the bird of paradise, contact PNG
Japan which offers several sightseeing
tours. The Western Province is renowned for
its wondrous birdwatching opportunities.
For more information on birding tours
along the Fly River, and around Tabubil and
Kiunga, please contact Kiunga Nature Tours
at www.kiunganaturetours.com. Bensbach
Wildlife Lodge, also in the Western Province,
offers its own birding tours. Contact Trans
Niugini Tours on +675 542 1438 for more
information.
EXPLORE NATURE
While the mainland is flush with birdlife,
the islands of PNG feature their own awe-
inspiring species. Some of the varieties
you might expect to see on West New
Britain include the Melanesian scrubfowl (or
megapode), song parrot, beach kingfisher
and nicobar pigeon, to name a few. The
Walindi Plantation Resort in Kimbe offers
birding tours. For more information, call the
resort on +675 7234 8460. East New Britain,
Bougainville and New Ireland also have
incredible birds to discover.
On your travels, keep an eye out for the
cassowary, which stands at 1.8 metres high
and weighs up to 59 kilograms, and the
crowned pigeon which is the size of a turkey.
TREKKING
PNG offers many exciting options for the
avid hiker, from traversing dense rainforests
and rugged peaks, to long-distance
coastal walks with ocean views. For the
adventurous trekker, Mt Wilhelm presents
the perfect challenge standing at around
4,500 metres. Demarcating the point
where three provinces converge (Western
Highlands, Simbu and Madang), Mt Wilhelm
is a hike for those with a moderate level
of fitness as it takes three to four days to
ascend its peak. Contact PNG Trekking
Adventures on +675 325 1284 for more
information.
For treks to Mt Hagen and surrounding
peaks in the Western Highlands, contact
Trans Niugini Tours on +675 542 1438. The
areas of East and West New Britain have
many extinct and active volcanoes worth a
climb and the Oro Province is similarly rich
in good climbing.
The Numa Numa Trail, located on
Bougainville, is a demanding trek. Lesser
known than the Kokoda Trail, the track
stretches some 62 kilometres from Numa
Numa to Wakunai traversing dense jungle,
volcanoes and waterways. Historically
speaking, the Numa Numa Trail was used
by both Japanese soldiers and the Allied
Forces during World War II (WWII). The
trail is not well developed and so it is
recommended that trekkers take a local
guide with them on their travels.
There’s a number of other reputable tour
operators that offer trekking tours from a
few days to a week. For more information
on tour operators in the region, visit
www.papuanewguinea.travel or email
When trekking in PNG it’s important to
understand that you are walking through
someone’s backyard. Everything in the
region is communally owned and belongs
to a family or tribe; therefore, certain cultural
expectations must be observed, such as
providing gifts in exchange for a meal or
accommodation in villages. Increasingly
a gift payment is required in the form of
money. Most villagers are fairly conservative,
so observe this code by wearing knee
length shorts or pants/skirts and t-shirts.
PORT MORESBY NATURE PARK
A popular tourist destination, the Port
Moresby Nature Park hosts a diverse and
extensive collection of indigenous flora and
fauna as well as outdoor cultural carvings.
The park is home to many native orchids
and plant species as well as a large
collection of native animal species such
as cassowaries, tree-kangaroos, wallabies,
reptiles and bird species including the bird
of paradise. If you like, you have the option
of taking a guided tour through the park
with one of the friendly trained guides. This
tropical oasis is also a place where you can
relax and unwind with picnic facilities and
a cafe available. There’s also a gift shop on
the premises where you’ll find some unique
souvenirs to take back home.
To get to the park, which is located on Goro
Kaeaga Road, simply travel to the end of
Waigani Road where the traffic turns right
at the roundabout with the big orchid
statue. The main entry to the Nature Park
is the first driveway on the right. A nominal
entrance fee applies to visitors. Remember
to pack your insect repellent to ward off
mosquitoes that are popular at certain
times of the year, and make sure you’re
wearing walking shoes.
The Port Moresby Nature Park is open
seven days a week from 8am to 4:30pm,
and offers a wonderful, safe and convenient
option for visitors to Port Moresby. To
contact the park, please call +675 326 0248.
CAVING
PNG possesses several of the deepest cave
systems in the world which give rise to
some incredible underground formations.
In East New Britain, Muruk Cave, which
measures 1123 metres in depth, is well worth
exploring. Benua Cave on the Keriaka
Plateau on Bougainville is said to have the
world’s largest cavern estimated to be 4.5
million cubic metres in size. The cave is
home to an eighteen metre high stalagmite,
which is remarkable to witness. Contact
Bougainville Experience Tours to book
a tour to the Benua Cave. In the Simbu
Province, the caves found around Kundiawa
were previously used by locals as a site
to bury their dead. Ask around for a local
guide who will know which caves are open
to tourists and who can escort you there.
For a cave adventure like no other, don’t
miss seeing the skull caves in Milne Bay.
Harking back to cannibalistic practices,
the caves are believed to be laden with
the skulls of enemies who were captured
and then eaten by the cave dwellers. It is
recommended visitors take a local guide
with them to explore the caves.
WATERFALLS
Located in the Middle Fly district in the
Western Province lies one of the largest
waterfalls in the country. If you enjoy the
thrill of this kind of attraction, the Wawoi
Falls is a stunning feat of nature nestled
within tangled, lush vegetation. If you’re
visiting the Southern Highlands, the magical
Wasi Falls is also worth checking out, and
closer to Port Moresby the Rouna Falls
provides great panoramas. Whether you
hire a car or a guide, the drive to Rouna
Falls is just as rewarding. In Milne Bay, just
ten minutes from the Tawali Resort, lies the
Hiliwau Waterfall. Make it a day of exploring
the skull caves as well as the falls.

Papua New Guinea is such an extraordinarily diverse culture that it comes as no surprise that there are no less than 820 languages spoken in the region. Tok Pisin, Hiri Motu and English are the three most commonly spoken languages. When you first hear Tok Pisin spoken, you’re sure to be enchanted.
Tok Pisin, known as pidgin in English, is a
creole language which means it derives its
vocabulary from a blend of languages. In
this case, English forms the basis of Tok
Pisin along with German, Portuguese, Malay,
Chinese and native languages. Tok Pisin
itself came from the phrase “talk pidgin”
and is spoken by around one to two million
people in PNG today.
The origins of Tok Pisin date back to the
19th century. It’s believed that the whalers
who arrived in the region around the 1850s
spoke a rudimentary pidgin, a mix of English
and native tongue, in order to trade with
the locals. When Papua New Guineans were
recruited to German owned plantations
in Samoa in the 1870s, they picked up
the pidgin here to communicate with
the Malaysian and Chinese labourers. On
arriving back home to PNG after their work
stints, many labourers continued to speak
pidgin which went on to spread throughout
villages. The German’s annexing the north
eastern part of PNG, known then as German
New Guinea, was influential in isolating the
language and allowing it to cultivate its
own unique mechanisms. At the turn of the
century, Tok Pisin became a means for the
locals to attain European comforts such as
cigarettes from settlers. During the Australian
administration of PNG, Tok Pisin became
more widely spoken and eventually forged
itself into the common vernacular of PNG.
All of this has culminated in a nation of
people who speak a number of languages
including many traditional Papua New
Guinean dialects: Ples Tok (meaning ‘place
talk’ which is the language used in their
own place), Tok Pisin, English and other
local languages that they learn by virtue of
moving to other villages during the course
of marriage and for other migratory needs.
Many Tok Pisin words are easily translated if
you speak English, but it’s not all based on
such simple substitution. The language does
have a very clear structure and form. Like all
languages, there are rules such as using pla
in front of most nouns and after adjectives.
For example to say ‘the big house’, you
would say big pla haus. Nonetheless, there
are exceptions; some adverbs are formed
by using two words such as the word for
‘little’ which is lik lik. With these types of
words you do not use the pla. To say ‘little
bag’ you just say lik lik bilum. A bilum is a
traditional PNG bag that is made from a
woven twine taken from the pandanus tree.
