Phoenix saw many skiers despite veryshort season

Despite a lack of snow that forced Phoenix Mountain Ski Hill to close early, staff remains optimistic about the future.

Chris Nason, area manager, said they were able to do a full opening just a little later than they were hoping.

“We were able to open up on Dec. 26, not Dec. 21 as was our original plan,” he said. “The snow situation was tolerable in the early season al-though it still wasn’t very high. We experienced this year four warm fronts accompanied by rain several times through the course of the season, which obviously eroded the snow pack and left us with much less snow than we could operate on in February.”

Nason said that the fact that it stayed warm and they weren’t able to save any snow removed any ability for Phoenix Mountain to operate safe-ly in February.

The hill was fully open for January but closed down in February after several warm fronts.

It is too expensive to make their own snow, Nason added.

Phoenix Ski Hill is owned and operated by a public group known as the Phoenix Mountain Alpine Ski Society (PMASS).

“Anyone who buys a season’s pass the year previous can apply for membership in PMASS, which is free,” said Nason. “So you take that sea-son’s pass and turn it into a little bit of ownership of the hill and you become a member of Phoenix Mountain Alpine Ski Society and you are entitled to attend the AGM and are kept abreast of other hill developments.”

PMASS members can also volunteer to join the board and directors and get involved even more.

Nason said that despite the lack of snow, Phoenix Mountain still had some very good at-tendance.

“During operations, our daily visit numbers were actually higher than in previous years,” he said. “There were more people on the hill when we were open than in previous years. So that was fantastic. It was always a busy time at the hill.

Pet of the Week MandyMy name is Mandy. I am 9 years old in September but everyone thinks of me as a “cute puppy”. I am usually very calm in public and happy to be with my parents or waiting in the car. The biggest tragedy is when I am left at home. I was the runt of my litter and my siblings look nothing like me. We are Shih Tzu/Terrier mixtures and I look like the terrier end of things. I love to talk to my people and will consent to their re-quests for entertainment on occasion and dance or sing for them. Although usually it just gets them more riled up! I live on a farm outside GF and although I am small I am the boss of the farm dog and will even take over his pillow. I add my bark to his when intruders are invading—if it strikes my fancy—or else I hide in my cave under the desk. Sometimes I will oblige my people and sleep with them or else I choose another spot and roll my eyes at them and their childish pleas. I make friends most every-where but won’t take their bribes of food often. My people have gotten into trouble at the border over the biscuits that I rejected, being thrown into the glove box of the car!

How to enter your pet: It’s free. Send your digital photos, and a write-up of up to 75 words, by email to: [email protected]. Please put the words “Pet of the Week” in the subject line, and include your contact information. You can also bring in a photo to our office at 7330 2nd Street. Pets that have very recently passed away may be submitted.

Grand Forks is known for many things, chief among them its sunshine and borscht. In fact, legend has it that was exactly what the sign welcoming visitors to our area said back in the 1990s. Now, of course, it urges you to ‘settle down.’

Borscht is one of the main sta-ples of the Doukhobor diet and is available at pretty much every restaurant in town for eating in or taking out.

There are many different ways to cook borscht but the main in-gredients remain: vegetables, butter and cream.

A few months back, filmmak-er Nik Green, formerly of Grand Forks, made several promotional videos for the city. One of the videos that ended up catching the most attention was a short one about the proper spelling of borscht/borshch.

While the more popular spell-ing is borscht, there are other spellings. The USCC (Union of Spiritual Communities of Christ) urges the spelling borshch. A letter in the Gazette from local Russian teacher Rob Stevenson urged people to use the proper USCC spelling of borshch. For a while, there was plenty of discus-sion in town between different

sides on what the correct spelling should be.

Wikipedia lists many differ-ent spellings of borscht including borshch, borsch, borstch, borsh and more.

Borscht is popular in many Eastern and Central European cuisines including Poland, Rus-sia, Ukraine and Belarus. As much as there are different spell-ings, there are also many differ-ent types of borscht.

According to a local lore, in the 1990s writer William Rezinskin transliterated many Doukhobor words into English. He said that the way borscht was spelled in English was not close to the ac-tual way it was pronounced in the original language. Rezinskin said that in order for Doukhobors to be true to their heritage, they should spell it borshch.

Dawsha Hunt of the tourism centre at gallery 2 said that they get many requests during the year for visitors asking where to get good borscht in Grand Forks.

“We prepared a list of the top 10 most frequently asked ques-tions by visitors and where can I get a good bowl of borscht is near the top,” said Hunt. “It’s really one of the main things that peo-ple stop in for in Grand Forks. They know our culture; they’re curious about our history. Those that have tried it before keep

coming back.”Hunt said when ask visitors

where they got great Russian food from, they always say some-where different.

“As far as I’m concerned they’re getting good borscht and good Russian food at all the res-taurants.”

As for Hunt’s favourite borscht it town, she says her mom’s without hesitation. As for the spelling, Hunt says there is no argument: “It’s spelled b-o-r-s-c-h-t. That’s the only way to spell it. It’s just the way I learned how to spell it.”

As for Stevenson, who teaches Russian at Grand Forks Second-ary, he said he was prompted to write in to the Gazette because he felt the video did not properly respect the Doukhobor heritage. Stevenson was born and raised in Grand Forks with a Doukhobor mother and English father. He continues to be an active member in the USCC.

“It wasn’t so much the spell-ing of borshch but the lack of cultural sensitivity with was apparent in how the video was made,” said Stevenson. “It ap-peared to me that the producers of the video didn’t collaborate with the members of the Douk-hobor community to ask for our feedback on how we feel about the image of Doukhoborism and

the Doukhobor culture was framed in it.”

Stevenson admits one of his pet peeves is the spelling of borshch. “It’s not something I’ll go ballistic over,” he said. “We’ve been a big part of the community, a founding part of the community over the last 100 or so years. I thought we were past the part where one group would make as-sumptions about our culture. They could come and ask us and get our feedback on it. If you want to make a satirical video on bor-shch there’s a cultur-ally sensitive way to do that.”

Stevenson said the borshch spelling is phonetically correct.

“That’s my personal prefer-ence,” he said.

Spelling aside, Stevenson says he does love his borshch. His mom continues to make the soup dish for the big functions at the USCC Hall. They also regularly can 40 or so quarts every so of-ten, he adds.

“It’s a staple.”Stevenson said there are two

main variations of borshch: sum-

mer and winter.“Winter borshch is primar-

ily cabbage,” he said. “Whatever people think of as Doukhobor borshch, that’s winter borshch. My favourite is the summer borshch (also known as green borshch) where you add the cabbage, rhubarb leaves, swiss chard, a whole bunch of green, leafy vegetables. They have a sour taste to them. It makes for better borshch—because the tang is the important part of it.”

School District 51 has received $86,235 to help it purchase a new boiler for Grand Forks Second-ary School though the provincial government’s Carbon Neutral Capital Program (CNCP).

The Boundary school district is one of 24 B.C. school districts which are sharing $5 million for energy projects like lighting upgrades, boiler re-placements, solar panels and electric vehicles un-der the CNCP. School districts were asked to sub-mit proposals to the Ministry of Education back in November. These proposals were then evalu-ated on greenhouse gas emission reductions and operational cost savings, along with the level of contributions available for the project from the district and energy service partners.

Overall, 25 projects were given the green light and are receiving provincial funds.

The City of Grand Forks will assist the Grand Forks Community Trails Society with the placement of the “Perepelkin Bench” on the Observa-tion Mountain Trail. This is an in-kind donation, as the society already has the money for the bench. But it’s im-portant to have the city on board. It’s their property, after all.

The commemorative bench will be in the name of businessman Peter Perepelkin, who, not long before he passed away, donated money towards development of the trail. He believed in it, as do many volunteers in our community who have worked dili-gently to groom the trail.

The bench will provide a peaceful spot at which to pause and reflect, or simply rest, along a trail that provides a beautiful view of the city.

The trail benefits local residents, but is also a draw to visitors—visitors look up at the star and wonder how to get there. A commemorative bench will be a beautiful enhancement, a touching legacy; kudos to the city for giving its support.

HOW TO REACH US

Time for a reality check

We all have this polite rit-ual that we go through when greeting others on our day. We ask, “How’s it going?” or maybe, “How are you today?” or perhaps a more formal, “How do you do?”

But it’s all pretty much a dance without substance? Most people recognize the question as a rhetorical one and give you a standard, be-nign answer. “Doing good, thanks! You?”

Some people have unique answers that they give every time. Take Wolfgang Schmidt up by Canyonveiw Bridge for instance. If you ever ask him how his day is going he will always reply, “Virtually per-fect!” The day you ask him and he doesn’t say those ex-

act words is the day you will know he’s not doing well.

But I changed things up a bit last week. For my morning greeting, instead of the usual inquiry I asked people, “What do you know that’s real?” It seemed like a reasonable ques-tion.

The results were intriguing. Nearly everyone had a come-back at the tip of his or her tongue. It was the answer that they gave that deserves some attention.

The majority of responses when I asked, “What do you know that’s real?” were sim-ply, “Nothing.”

That is kind of frightening when you consider I hadn’t asked what they knew that was new, I had asked them what they knew that was real.

This has prompted me to reprioritized part of my own life. For one thing I have long had the intention of taking a defensive driving refresher course. The number of people

who self-identified as know-ing nothing about reality has given me reason to move that course up to the soonest date possible.

I did get some other inter-esting responses though. One person replied, “Absolutely nothing—I live in Midway, you know.”

When I asked someone else they said, “Oh I don’t know anything about that.” Mak-ing it sound like they had once considered reality as a lifestyle choice but opted for something else.

Another told me, “Well if I can’t ad lib then I don’t really want to say anything.”

Obviously people are hold-ing their reality cards pretty close to their chests and aren’t too likely to reveal much. Maybe reality is something that isn’t talked about in po-lite company, like politics or religion?

In my opinion though, the best answer that day was, “I

am very much aware of what’s real—but you can’t quote me on that.”

At the end of the whole business I come away feeling better about my own sanity, though. After all, it seems that most folks are just as confused as I am about the whole blast-ed thing.

~ * ~ * ~We are lucky the time

change happens in the middle of the night. Especially the springtime one; you know, the one where we move the clocks forward an hour. Imagine the pandemonium if we switched our clocks at noon?

Lots of people would miss lunch. Others would miss ap-pointments.

Conversations would have to be cut short. “Oh my gosh! Just where has the day gone? I gotta run!”

It’s way less stressful to do it the way we do now, when we’re asleep.

Letters to the editor

Bill C-51 will change our livesDo we need the “security of

Canada” legislation that Prime Minister Harper has tabled in parliament in the form of Bill C-51, an anti-terrorist act with sweeping implications for Cana-dians?

Bill C-51 is a 62-page docu-ment that is presently being discussed by a par-liamentary committee for nine days from Febru-ary. It will then be discussed by MPs and voted upon.

According to various news reports, the bill would allow the Canadian Security and Intelli-gence Service (CSIS) to:

• Disrupt activities that the agency deter-mines are terrorist in nature. Travel plans, fi-nancial transactions and online communications could be blocked. CSIS is now restricted to the collection of intelligence which is passed to the RCMP,

• Expand the no-fly list of people who are de-termined to be threats to national security

• Criminalize the promotion of terrorism. People who are found guilty of promoting ter-rorism could be sentenced for up to five years. The bill is not clear on what “promotion” means. It could mean actively supporting or instigating terrorism.

When passed the bill will:

•Allow telephone and Internet commu-nications to be bugged but only with a court order to do so.

• Allow the re-moval of terrorist propaganda from the Internet. CSIS of-ficials could obtain a court order to remove any material that the agency determines is promoting or encour-aging acts of terrorism against Canadians. Propaganda is defined as writing or signs that promote terrorism.

• Allow private in-

formation to be shared among government departments. Passport information, income tax forms, and confidential commercial data could be shared with law enforcement and security agencies.

• Allow classified court proceedings to be sealed. Information shared in deportation trials would be included.

• Arrest anyone who is thought to be plan-ning a terrorist act.

• Extend the length of time for holding a sus-pect to seven days from three.

• Require anyone to submit to electronic monitoring, surrender their passport, and re-main in their jurisdiction if it is determined that they “may commit” an offence

Bill C-51 as tabled will allow all of the for-going actions to be taken without government oversight. Do Canadians want to live in a coun-try where their daily activities may be monitored for reasons that they may be engaged in a “ter-rorist” activity?

Do Canadians want to live in a country where

THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF GRAND FORKS

NOTICE OF WATER MAIN FLUSHINGThe Water Utility Department would like to advise residents that the crew will be flushing water mains throughout the City starting March 16 through to the end of April. Regular annual flushing is an important component of the comprehensive water preventative maintenance program adhered to by the City of Grand Forks. Flushing water mains are done to remove sediment that gradually deposits in the pipes which will help maintain the water quality in our system.

The City of Grand Forks endeavors to emphasize water conservation and sustainability, therefore, the operations department will re-use the flushing water by capturing it and utilizing it as part of the boulevard maintenance program.

Flushing will take place between the hours of 5:00 am and 3:30 pm. As we flush your area, you may experience a temporary reduction in water pressure and/or discoloration of the water. These conditions are normal during flushing activities and are only temporary. Please check your drinking, cooking, and laundry water before using. To clear your water lines, simply turn on your cold water tap or outside hose bib and let it run until the water is clear (approx 15 min. or more).

If you have any questions or if you experience any persistent water quality problems as a result of this maintenance program, please let us know at www.grandforks.ca or call City Works at 250 442 4148.

Diseases rare thanks to vaccines

Life is about living, Patrick said

Editor, The Gazette:I am from the polio generation. I was

touched just slightly while my brother-in-law, now deceased, was severely crippled.

My first job out of high school was at the Jubilee Hospital in Victoria where there was a polio ward and that was a horrible place. Polio,

Small Pox, Whooping cough; these diseases are rare now thanks to vaccines.

If these diseases make a comeback because enough people refuse to vaccinate their chil-dren, we will all be very sorry.

Pat Ralph,Grand Forks

Editor, The Gazette:As he looked at the green valleys with water

in the distance, Patrick thought of the people around him and wondered how they might benefit from hearing another view of what lies ahead for them.

He bent down, and picked up a bright green leaf: not just any plant, a shamrock— three-leaf clover.

“That’s it,” he heard himself say. “Do you want to live always, having fun

with huge numbers of friends? Happy forever,

loved and being loved? No more problems ever? One answer, then, will be three in one and one in three.

“Life is about living: not just about move-ment, time and space, change and decay. It’s about truth, justice and totality.”

Canadians are free to reach out to pure thought if they choose to. It’s not the case all over the world.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day.J. O’Sullivan,Grand Forks

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, friends

they are not free to express their opposition to an oil pipeline, oil tankers plying the coast, hydrau-lic fracturing (fracking), a liquefied natural gas plant or a mining operation in a peaceful man-ner?

According to a recent Angus Reid poll, 82 per cent of Canadians surveyed on line said they support the bill; 29 per cent stated that they “strongly support” the bill.

Former prime ministers, governors general, environmental groups, civil liberties groups and individuals are opposing Bill C-51 across the country. They say that the government is pro-ceeding far too fast on a bill that has such broad implications.

Elizabeth May, MP for Saanich Gulf Islands, has expressed her opposition to Bill C-51. She refutes the prime minister’s claim that Canada is at war. She states, “C-51, the so-called Anti-

Terrorism Act, creates new powers for the Ca-nadian Security Intelligence Service, (CSIS). The agency was created to keep the RCMP policing functions separate from intelligence work after the fiasco of burning the barn in an FLQ opera-tion. This bill gives CSIS the power to do any-thing (okay, not anything. It especially says CSIS cannot directly kill or harm people or ‘violate the sexual integrity of an individual,’ but oth-erwise, CSIS will have a vague set of sweeping powers).”

The government is defending its actions by citing the shootings that took place at the nation-al war memorial and inside parliament buildings in October 2014 as examples of terrorism, yet no proof has been provided to verity the claim.

Will the passage of Bill C-51 ensure that Win-ston Smith’s Big Brother world of 1984 has finally become a reality?

Lots of fun.”Nason said the hill was able to run a full ski

program for Hutton Elementary but were un-able to do anything for Perley or Christina Lake schools.

Unfortunately, Phoenix ended up shutting down two days before the big Family Day free ski event.

“That was a huge hit for us,” he said. “We were expecting very high numbers. The day be-fore that, we were supposed to host the Nancy Green Zone Race. (That’s) two very large events in a short period of time. We had lots of supplies brought up and were expecting large than ex-

pected staffing levels.”Nason said the ski hill continues to be healthy

and there are no plans on permanently shutting down any time soon, even with the lack of snow this year.

Nason said he does expect sales for next year to be down with people’s confidence dropping with the lack of snow.

“We’re going to be offering significant dis-counts next year for season’s passholders from this year,” he said. “In appreciation of their sup-port for this year and in recognition for not hav-ing as many ski days this year as they normally would.”

Grand Forks resident Karl Lilgert is appeal-ing to the Supreme Court of Canada to review his case.

Lilgert was convicted in 2013 by jury of two counts of criminal negligence causing death and sentenced to four years for his role in the 2006 sinking of the Queen of the North ferry. Lilgert is currently in prison serving his sentence.

The ferry, which Lilgert was navigating, struck an island during an overnight voyage

from Northern B.C. to Vancouver Island, killing passengers Gerald Foisy and Shirley Rosette.

In an interview with the Canadian Press, Lil-gert’s lawyer, Glen Orris, said that he plans to argue in the appeal that the trial judge gave in-correct instructions to the jury when explaining the offence of a criminal negligence.

Lilgert was tried by jury in 2013 and found guilty. He had been out and living in Grand Forks while appealing to the B.C. Appeal Court. The appeal court turned down Lilgert’s appeal in December of last year and he has been in jail since.

Police have no suspects, said Staff Sgt. Jim Harrison of the Grand Forks detachment.Tractor trailer unit loses control

At 7 a.m. on March 5, police re-sponded to a single motor vehicle acci-dent on Hwy 3 near Kootenay Car Care. The driver was operating a tractor trailer unit and a trailer; the vehicle lost control and went into the ditch. There was extensive damage to the front of the vehicle, Harrison reported, but the driver sustained only minor injuries.

Upon investigation, police determined the driver (a 29-year-old from Castelgar) was driv-ing with undue care and attention and as a result was charged with that offence. Stolen items recovered

At 2 p.m. on March 6, RMCP received a re-port of a theft of coins, along with jewelry and war medals and letters, stolen from a residence on Gilpin Road.

“Subsequently we arrested an individual and found him in possession of those items and he has since been charged with possession of stolen property,” Harrison said. Two fail roadside screening

Traffic stops in the early hours of March 8 re-sulted in two driving prohibitions issued.

Harrison said that at 12:44 a.m., a vehicle driver was found to have the odour of liquor on his breath. When a roadside screening sample was taken, it showed a warning. The driver was given a 24-hour driving prohibition, and a ticket for not following the restrictions of his driver’s licence. His vehicle was towed.

A little more than an hour later, a traffic stop was conducted on Beach Rd and Hwy 3. A driver displayed the odour of liquor and as a result of the roadside screening device, he blew a warn-ing, resulting in a three-day roadside prohibi-tion, Harrison said. His vehicle was towed.

Support Dry GradBritish Columbians are invited to support

local dry graduation celebrations by donating at participating BC Liquor Stores throughout the province. All donations collected between now and March 31 will help fund alcohol-free events and activities for graduating high school students in their communities. Contributions by BC Liquor Store customers and employees add to funds raised by parents, students and teachers for alcohol-free graduation celebra-tions. Each BC Liquor Store gives a small token of appreciation to customers who contribute $1 or more to the Support Dry Grad campaign.

From Council Chambers

The Outdoor Adventure and Travel Show

The City of Grand Forks, would like to thank Wayne Kopan, Manager of Building and Bylaw Services, for his dedication to

the organization. The level of service he brings to the position is truly appreciated.

Recently, there were opinions expressed publicly by Council that were never intended to offend Mr. Kopan. Council would like to see him con-tinue to deliver professional services for the organization, as he has for the past 30 years.

We look forward to moving ahead with business in a professional and considerate manner.

MAYOR AND COUNCIL

BUSINESS OF THE CITYThe City of Grand Forks is governed by an elected council, a mayor and 6

councillors, who are elected for four year terms. Each member of coun-cil represents the city at large. Committee of the Whole meetings are sched-uled once per month at 9:00am and Regular meetings are scheduled Monday evenings at 7:00pm. Both meetings are held in Council Chambers at City Hall. During July and August these meetings are scheduled once per month. Agen-das and minutes of Council meetings are available on the City’s website www.GrandForks.ca. The COTW and Regular meetings of Council are open to the public, who are encouraged to attend.

Individual and/or Group Chats with the Mayor

CorrespondenceMembers of Council receive corre-

spondence from the public on various issues in the community, and regard-ing a wide variety of topics.

While Council members and the City engage the community in vari-ous ways and for a variety of reasons, Corporate Services / Communications also provide a communication link for members of the public to ‘Connect with Council’ through written cor-respondence on a daily basis. De-pending on the nature of the written correspondence, Council is provided with the information in a timely man-ner, whether it is received in response to a legislated process, or a matter of individual or community interest.

If you are unable to attend a Coun-cil meeting, we encourage you to sub-mit your thoughts in writing to [email protected]. All written and email correspondence addressed to Mayor and Council become public docu-ments once received by the City.

The Mayor is committed to main-taining an open door policy, extend-ing an invitation to the public to meet or call his office at City Hall during business hours. Pre-arranging an appointment with the front desk, is recommended in order to avoid any disappointment should the Mayor be away from the office. The Mayor is unable to make decisions on Council’s behalf, and any requests would need to be presented to Council for con-sideration as per Council Procedure Bylaw No. 1946, 2013.

Strategic PlanningCouncil’s Strategic Planning Session

is scheduled to take place on April 15th, 2015. In preparation for the Strategic Planning session, Council would like to invite the public to an open house to discuss a vision for the future of Grand Forks. Please mark your calendars for March 23, 2015 from 3pm-7pm.

The City of Grand Forks is busy promoting the community for

upcoming tourism season. On March 7 & 8, the City and

Chamber of Commerce participated in the Outdoor Adventure and Travel Show that was held at the Vancouver Convention Centre. The show was packed with adventurers of all ages and abilities.

The City’s booth showcased out-door recreation activities the area has to offer and promoted the spe-cial features of the community and Boundary Country. Staff spoke with over 750 people and handed out over 450 packages containing camping, fishing, biking, hiking, kayaking and other area information. Attendees of the show were also keen to enter a contest for two (separate) free week-ends in the community. Each weekend includes one free week at The Pines camp, two golf passes for Christine Lake Golf Club, two meals at local restaurants and two nights at a local B&B.

According to staff who attended the

event, there were lots of questions about road and mountain biking, camping, fishing and driving loops.

Staff intend to review all the infor-mation they gathered at the show and provide a report to Council and the public. The City hopes this infor-mation will guide the community in determining how to better attract tourists and support them when they visit the community.

Roles of Mayor and Council

The Mayor is the political leader of the Community. • Under the terms of the Community Charter, the Mayor is designated as the

Chief Executive Officer (CEO). • He chairs all Council meetings and is Council’s spokesperson. • He represents the community at formal meetings, community events, school functions,

special occasions, etc. • The Mayor may also represent the City on external Boards and Committees in the Grand

Forks Region or in the Province. • The City’s economic development initiatives require the Mayor to play a key role in

discussions and negotiations with prospective developers and business people.• The Mayor is the primary link on a day-to-day basis through the Chief

Administrative Officer – CAO with the City’s administration.

Mayor

Councillors on a municipal Council are part of a working team. • Their input is critical to all policy decisions. • Councillors must have effective listening skills and the ability to decide what is best for

the Community as a whole.• Councillors bear the responsibility of keeping themselves informed of regional as well as

local issues. • Councillors support the Mayor in official capacities. • Councillors must remain committed to addressing policy issues and developing the

direction of the Community.• Councillors do not have specific authority given to them under the Community Charter

and cannot direct Staff and commit expenditures on behalf of the municipality.

Councillors

All powers of a Council are exercised by bylaws and resolutions. The Community Charter states that these decisions can only be made at regular or specially convened council meeting where there is a quorum, or fixed number of Council members present.

Another business has opened up in Grand Forks, filling in one of the vacant storefronts on Market Avenue.

Work n Play is back in town right next door to the old location across from Jogas Espresso Café. Owner Amber Esovoloff opened the store a week ago and says business has been very good so far.

The store had a soft opening on March 2 but she says she expects to have a more formal grand opening in April.

Esovoloff explains that Work n Play is not a chain of stores but rather a buying group.

“What it means is that as a buying group we can get discounts we can pass on to our custom-ers,” she said. Esovoloff started doing embroi-dery and printing out of her home to be with her young daughter. After her kids grew older, Eso-voloff decided it was time to open up a “brick and mortar” store.

“I was looking forward to getting out in the community,” she said. “My kids are older now. I enjoy people and I definitely like having a store and interacting with people. It’s a little more vis-ible and I have my home back. The equipment had filled the basement. I’ve brought the embroi-dery and printing downtown and merged it with Work n Play and now we do both.”

The store sells men’s work clothes as well as

casual wear, as well as ladies’ clothes and cloth-ing for youth. “We are trying to carry Canadian-made as much as possible. We have work boots, we’ll have runners coming soon.”

Esovoloff said they are trying to keep prices affordable to encourage people to shop local.

“We offer really good service,” she said. “We’re trying really hard to bring in products for customers when they have requests so we can meet their needs.”

Esovoloff said they are constantly building their inventory and adding new products regu-larly.

“We’re starting a little bit small but we’ve lots of stuff coming. A lot of our brand names will be coming soon,” she said.

Work n Play does carry plenty of name brand clothing items already, including Burnside, Trib-al, Gilmore, Nygard, Alia and Tanjay, Barbar-ian rugby shirts, as well as Timberland boots to name a few.

The embroidery and printing part of the busi-ness can print stickers, wine labels, canvas pic-ture wrap frames, fashion vinyls on shirts, ban-ners, and more.

Esovoloff, who was born and raised in Grand Forks, says that feedback from people in the com-munity has been great. “The feedback has been very, very positive,” she said. “Lots of people are happy (to see us here). A lot of people are sup-port us already even though we just opened.”

Trail stewardship focus of meetingEveryone acknowledged the motor-

ized elephant that sat in the middle of the Midway Community Hall last month when two top officials from Recreation Sites and Trails BC of the Ministry of For-est, Lands and Natural Resource Opera-tions came to talk about the Trans Cana-da Trail.

They had come to talk about trail stewardship and to offer local residents the chance to help ensure the rail trail corridor in the Boundary is maintained for future generations.

Sandy Elzinga, assistant manager of Community Futures Boundary, wel-comed Tennessee Trent, trails special-ist with Recreation Sites and Trails BC (RSTBC) and John Hawkings, director of RSTBC. Also present was Kevin Eskelin, regional recreation manager, Southern Interior East Region – Cranbrook.

Hawkings reviewed the history of the provinces’ ownership of the trails, which includes the Carmi Subdivision of the Kettle Valley Railway that runs from Midway to Naramata, the Columbia and Western (C&W) between Midway and Grand Forks, the KVR Penticton and Os-oyoos subdivisions, and the C&W from Grand Forks to Castlegar and the Slocan Subdivision.

Hawking said the Forest Practices Act that now regulates the trails didn’t even exist at the time, and it wasn’t until 2010 that RSTBC was given responsibility for these specific trails.

Today the former rail corridor is rec-ognized in legislation as trails, but ever since the 1990s when the government bought the land, it was essentially vacant Crown land. “There are some designa-tions on various portions of it,” he said.

But there are lots of portions where

it hasn’t been designated as anything, and that is the case through most of the Boundary.

In the City of Grand Forks the trail is designated non-motorized by a mu-nicipal bylaw. It is also non-motorized through Myra Canyon Provincial Park, legally non-motorized from Naramata up to Penticton and up to Summerland. It is also non-motorized through the town of Princeton.

“The rest of it—while we are not con-doning motorized use, we are indulging it there,” Hawking said. But he repeated RSTBC is willing to work with the com-munities to try and manage it and to re-solve the issue in a way that benefits the most people.

He said RSTBC works with commu-nities who have shown an interest in resolving the issue. He cited work done in Nara-mata and Summerland. “But if the communi-ties are not interested in resolving this question, there is no resolve.”

“We are not going to start enforcing until we can go out and work with the groups,” Hawkings said, adding that he would welcome one big group of stewards in the Boundary who could come up with a voice to help solve the problem locally.

Trail maintenance and partnership with locals was what Hawkings and Trent had come to talk about. The top priority for RSTBC is to maintain the trails to a basic level: preventing washouts, maintaining engineering

infrastructure and ensuring safety for us-ers.

Hawking said they view the trails as community trails first, regional trails sec-ond, provincial trails third and then they become part of the national trails system.

Trent explained the Rec Sites and Trails Partnership Agreement and the Individ-ual Volunteer Service Agreement. With a staff of fewer than 40, the RSTBC relies on some 300 partnership agreements with community groups across B.C. to be the eyes on local sections of trails and rec sites. RSTBC provides project materials and funding for local projects as its bud-get allows. Volunteers working under an agreement are covered by insurance.

Area E director Vicki Gee said she is very interested in trying to move this for-ward as a regional district initiative.

The Harlem Crowns basketball team came to Grand Forks Secondary School on Monday, Feb. 23 to play the GFSS senior boys. There was a good show out for the game and it was fun entertain-ment for the whole family. The boys lost, but played well against the Crowns as the crowd cheered them on. Overall a good evening of enter-tainment in Grand Forks!

Alas, spring isn’t just the time of year when nature springs to life or when you get to put your boots and parkas away. It is also income tax time. If preparing your income tax return is a real nightmare for you, you should know that there are many resources available that are designed to facilitate this chore.

Tax return software is available in stores and post offices. These allow you to fill out your income tax return on your computer and then send it to the government electronically. The software must, however, be authorized by government authorities.

Call in the expertsSome income tax software offers telephone help lines, either free or with a charge. Government or ganizations can also provide you with free

tax-related assistance over the phone, as well as other services.

GettinG helpIf you are on a low income, you might be eligible for a community program to have your in come tax return done for you. Call Revenue Canada or your local community services centre to find out if this is the case for you. During income tax time, some organizations and volunteer groups set up free workshops to help people on low incomes complete their own in come tax returns.

Tax laws are complex and are constantly chang-ing. If you believe that your tax situation is com-plicated, perhaps because you are a landlord who re ceives revenue from rental properties or because you own a small business, entrust your bookkeeping and tax return to professional accountants. They have the expertise to deal with every tax situation and can help you maxi-mize your savings.

Governments lose billions of tax dollars every year from the income of individuals and businesses, as well as from un paid taxes. Tax evasion can take many different forms: Tax shelters, undeclared work, excessive tax planning, om itting to sub-mit an income tax return or to declare revenue earned from investments on the stock exchange, etc.

ConsequenCes for tax evadersTax evasion has major consequences for those who are caught: it can result in a criminal convic-tion. If they are found guilty, they could receive a heavy fine, go to prison or end up with a criminal record with all the negative repercussions this situation can result in.

ConsequenCes for the General publiCThis embezzlement of public funds also has consequences for society in general. Governments invest considerable sums of money in attempt-ing to catch poor payers and tax evaders. This money, added to that lost every year due to tax evasion, amounts to a huge loss of revenue for governments. These losses directly affect their level of debt and influence their capacity to pro-vide services and to finance programs in response to the needs of our society; social programs are often the first to be cut. Moreover, law-abiding individuals see their tax burden increased unfairly.

Tax evaders, as much as society in general, are affected by tax evasion. So pay what you owe now before having to pay too much at a later date.

Ronald Barry CliftonFeb 1944 - Feb 2015

It is with heavy hearts and loving memories we wish to share that Ron lost his battle to Pancreatic Cancer on Feb.28, 2015 at age 71.

Ron was the son of Gordon and Jean Clifton and lived the majority of his life in Grand Forks … As a child, however; he lived in Calgary with his birth mother Joan (Wood) Hepburn.

Ron was an amazingly positive man and had a zest for life that few could match. He was altruistic and always ready to lend a helping hand. He loved anything to do with motorized vehicles ranging from classic cars; RVs, boats, snowmobiles and trucks. He also loved his sports …hockey and golf being among his favourites. In the earlier years, Ron was actively involved with minor hockey as well as the Grand Forks Border Bruins as bus driver and GM. Later on, he spent much of his time at his beloved Christina Lake Golf Course where he was a long time member. In his retirement years, he loved travelling south in the winter … to Yuma and Mexico, where it didn’t take him long to make new friends with his disarming personality and sense of humour.

Ron was a truck driver for the majority of his working life except for the 18 years when he became a business owner … some may remember him as “Ron the Muffl er Man”.

He was married for 48 years and is survived by his wife Linda Clifton, who was without a doubt the love of his life. He is also survived by his son and only child, Mark Clifton, his sister Roxy (Dave) Agar and his brother Michael Hepburn. He will be sadly missed by his nieces and nephews … Nadine Froese, Corey Froese, Lisa Agar, Marnie Birkeland, Lisa Burns and Jay Froese … his great nephews and nieces, his mother-in-law, Doll Hove … as well as his “special grandchildren” Kolby and Quinton McIver. He was an amazing husband, father, brother, uncle … and friend to many.

He fought his disease right up to the last day, and although terribly sad, we are relieved that he is at peace after a 22-month battle. A gathering to remember Ron and to celebrate his life will be held at the Omega Banquet Room Saturday, March 14th, 2015 between 2:00pm & 5:00pm. Please stop by anytime during and share a memory.

In lieu of fl owers, memorial donations may be made to Boundary Hospital or a charity of your choice. Grand Forks Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

Christians gather for day of prayerThe World Day of Prayer service was

held in Grand Forks Friday in the Se-niors’ Centre at City Park, sponsored by the United Church.

“Showing genuine interest in others is a positive step forward in maintaining unity among believers and reaching out to the community,” were words writ-ten by the women of the Bahamas, who wrote this year’s service, including the World Day of Prayer.

They invited us to join them in cele-brating of their culture and history, their land and their legacy.

The World Day of Prayer is a global ecumenical movement which brings Christians of all traditions together to observe a common day of prayer each

year. In participating in the worship service, we can come to know how our sisters in other countries, languages and cultures understand the biblical passag-es in context, their concerns and needs and feel ourselves in solidarity with them as we pray with and for them.

In this way it is possible to enrich our Christian faith as it grows deeper and broader in an international, ecumenical expression.

The motto of World Day of Prayer movement is, “Informed, Prayer and Prayerful Action.”

Through our participation in the World Day of Prayer, we affirm that prayer and action are inseparable and that both have immeasurable influence on the world. The World Day of Prayer is coordinated by the Women Inter Church Council of Canada (WICC) fo-

cusing on four main concerns of social justice, women’s issues, ecumenism and growth of women’s spirituality.

Through World Day of Prayer grants, WICC supports grassroots work to help women and children both in developing countries and here at home, escape the cycle of poverty and violence.

The council also prepares an annual service to mark Dec. 6, Canada’s Na-tional Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

The women of the Bahamas began with the question, “Jesus said to them, ‘Do you know what I have done for you?’”

Christians around the world and in communities across Canada have gath-ered on World Day of Prayer to pray and act in solidarity with people of the Bahamas.

ANNE MARIENSubmitted to the Gazette

Ultimate judgment is a day of reckoningLast week I had the

opportunity to ask a B.C. Supreme Court judge if there were any absolutes in law. For his response he said the following:

“About 500 years ago, if a man killed another man, he would have been expected to give compensation to the widow and children of the man he killed. Today, in some states, for the same crime, he can expect to be given a lethal injection.”

That was all he said, and I didn’t have time to question him further on the matter. The essence of his answer is obviously that it depends on the law of the day.

In a democracy, the law of the day is decided by legislators. The laws created by the legislators depends largely upon their personal convictions and upon the opinion of the general pub-lic as represented by the “conscience” of their constituents as the legislator perceives that conscience.

Personally, I find this situation a little unsettling. But it is highlighted for citizens of Canada by the ongoing discussions over the right of a woman to have an abortion and the current discussion and judgments over the right to end one’s life.

However, as I look at the congregation from the pulpit, and view the folks through the lens of Scripture, there is no doubt in my mind that there are absolutes to which the citizens of Can-ada, and the province of British Columbia, and here, in the Boundary, should be giving very close attention.

For when the Son of God returns, and sepa-rates the nations before Him, as a shepherd sepa-rates the sheep from the goats, He has warned us that the separation is not going to be based upon the wrong that we have done, but on the good that we have or have not done.

We will be judged on the law of love, and not according to the “I kept my nose clean” princi-ple that many, many people espouse from some

false notion of righteousness.Listen to the judgment: “Then He will say to those on His

left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry, and you gave me nothing to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me nothing to drink; I was a stranger, and you did not invite Me in, naked, and you did not clothe Me, sick, and in prison, and you did not visit Me.…to the extent that you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’” (Matt. 25:41-46)

Canadians tend to be hugely complacent. Life is too good for us. We have lost touch with the ultimate price that many have paid to give us this incredible life we life here.

At this time, we need to bestir our conscience, as a nation, to bring forth thought, action, and legislation, that bears forth the thought, action, and judgments of the Eternal, Righteous God, and our Creator.

Remember, the Son of God endured an horrible death to reconcile us to God and cleanse our conscience from dead works. With all our hearts, we should be seeking opportuni-ties to do good, especially for the distressed, downtrodden, and afflicted. This is the only action that will stand the test in the ultimate judgment.
