Hello and welcome to the start of the sixthyear of our magazine. Five years and sixtymonthly editions completed, and all ontime, never late once!! something we arevery proud of.

We must thank our local printer for all of hishelp during this period. It is Bailen at SantaPola, where, if you ever need anythingprinted, you will find them most helpful andprofessional.

So many people and businesses havehelped in our achievement and we thankyou all.

In Loreto the local Councillor and the TownHall, we have always had nothing but helpand courtesy with anything we haverequired from them.

After spending 9 months helping to start up“Jungledrums”, we, in January 2005produced our first “Advertiser”. In black inkon blue paper as shown on the facing page. The idea being to advertise householdgoods. But.......it grew and grew, morepages, going to full colour, making theformat bigger, until where we are today.

After entering the print trade as an 18 yearold apprentice, back in 1963, never did Ithink that I would end up in Spain, still inprint.

Have a good month

We at your Gran Alacant Advertisercontinue to bring you allof the news from theGran Alacant Councillor,Loreto Cascales, as we havesince May 2005.

Three areas of the Santa Pola beaches haveseen small copses of trees planted. Also alongthe coast road to Santa Pola, fence work isbeing erected. This should cause manyparking problems when the summer monthscome. Santa Pola Council tell us that this workhas been asked for by the landowners (CoastalAuthorities) of these strips of land. This meansthat the Council cannot get their vehicles ontothe beaches to keep them clean and tidy.

The main story this month, apart from our5th anniversary!!, is the completion ofGran Alacant’s first park. Loreto took usinto the Park so that we could takepictures for this months edition. Theofficial opening by Loreto and the Mayor, will take place on the 7th February at 12noon . We will of course have pictures ofthat in our March edition. We havepictures of the park in this magazine.

We have had a very good response to lastmonths article about allotments. Many ofyou have contacted us and put forwardnames. If you are still considering thepossibility of having an allotment on GranAlacant, there is still plenty of time to ringor email us at the magazine to put yourname forward. The idea is definitely to goahead and a location area is underconsideration.

The pine trees that have died along sideall of the new pavements are beingreplaced with new, non pine, trees. Thecost of this has been bourne by thecompany who planted them, not theTown Hall.

We know next Christmas is a long way

off, but we were asked if more could beprovided on Gran Alacant for childrennext year. When we spoke to Loretoabout this she said to make anappointment with her and she would behappy to discuss ideas with you.

On a similar thread, again we were askedif some kind of youth club could beorganised on our Urbanisation. Loretosays that this is already in hand. Manyparents have mentioned the idea to her. Aroom at the Life Resort is to be used tostart up the idea in early Frbruary to seehow it goes. If it then needs to expand, bigger premises will be sought.

The swimming pool in Santa Pola is 85%finished, but now at a standstill. Thebuilder has gone bust and the Council aretrying to find a way out to complete theproject.

You will all have no doubt noticed that thetrain has now ceased to operate. The newone should be up and running for earlyMarch. The bus still continues to use thesame route, every half an hour.

The landscaping of the Clot is nowvirtually finished and the next big projectwill be the re-location of the market. Muchpaperwork has to be completed before itcan be started.

The Santa Pola 1/2 marathon ran on theweekend of the 23/24th January. Therewere 1,000 entrants for the childrens runon the Saturday and 6,800 for the adults

on the Sunday. The Council are makingbig efforts each year to make this a multi-national race, and advertising by theTown Hall, took place in many well knowathlete magazines. The event is now thesecond biggest in the whole of Spain, justbehind Madrid and in front of Valencia. Abig achievement for the area.

Yet again we talked about the area on theleft when you go down the beach roadhill. This untidy area is covered in rubbishand dogs mess as one of the emails to usdescribes.

You will see in our email section, moreanger about dog mess. Already at thenew clot walkway the area is covered. Itreally is becoming a massive problem.Signs do not seem to work. Perhaps theonly answer is someone paid to watchand photograph these people. Rememberthat it is not the dog, it is the owner.

Elche Town Hall are talking of building awatersports centre between the beachesof Arenales and Carabasi beach.Hopefully it could be ready for thissummer, providing windsurfing, sailing, and kite surfing. This may help to attractholiday makers to local rentals and hotels.

On the 23rd January we were at theofficial opening of the wonderfullyrevamped Santa Pola football stadium. Asthe mag is full this month, we will bringyou pictures in our next edition.

THESE AREAS WILL ALSO HAVE PLAYGROUNDS AND EXERCISE MACHINES

Welcome everyone to February’s Beauty page.

Following on from January’s edition, Other Complementary Therapies.(Please note I do not practice the following therapies)

Osteopathy - Like chiropractor, an osteopath manipulates the joints of the body. They work on thebasis that the body’s structure and function are interdependent. If the structure is damaged in anyway then this will affect its function. By manipulating joints and bones they can correct structuralproblems which will improve the body’s function.

Physiotherapy - Physiotherapy uses physical exercises, massage and the application of pressure torelieve physical pain and muscular tension. It is often used to re educate the body in cases of majorsurgery, illness or in the event of an accident.

Shiatsu. - Shiatsu is a form of acupressure. The use of fingers or thumb pressure on points along themeridians (energy channels) to help relieve pain and encourage the body to heal itself. The pressurepoints are the same as those used in acupuncture.

Yoga/Meditation - Both Yoga and Meditation have long been known to have beneficial, holistic effects and are useful self-help therapies. They teach you to have control of your body andmind. Yoga does this through physical exercise, including adopting different postures, relaxationtechniques and breathing exercises. Meditation uses different focuses (such as visualization, a candle or a mantra) to help the person find calm and a sense of their own centre. Meditation has thephysiological effects of a short sleep, i.e. the body goes into a healing and recharging mode it adoptswhen we sleep, allowing your muscles to relax and your circulation to become more effective.

Next month I will discuss Reiki and Reflexology - See you then - Dott

The salon will be closed from the 23rd Feb re-opening on the 16th March.

SELLING PROPERTY IN SPAIN IN 2010

It goes without saying that properties are not selling as quickly as they were. Everyone can seethat.

There is however, a glimpse of hope for those selling and returning to the UK. Your property maybe worth more than you think.

Take this example if you bought your property in 2004/5/6 you are likely to have got 1,45€ foreach Pound. So if you bought your house for 300,000 euros it cost you £206,900.

You know you can´t get 300,000€ for your property but you would get 250,000€ at todays exchange rate of 1.12 that gives you £223,214.28 which basically gives you a profit of£16314.28.

Had the pound against the euro remained the same then you would clearly be running at a loss. The fact is it hasn´t can work to your advantage but only if you are returning to the UK.

Don´t just look at the value in euros look at the conversion back to sterling.

For those selling and wishing to remain in Spain again be realistic. If the price of your propertyhas come down, then so has the one you might like to buy! Yes everyone is looking for a bargain, but if a buyer wants a bargain with you why shouldn´t you have one on another property.

Commonsense is prevailing in the property market, we have more sales and purchases goingthrough than at any other time even when the market was buoyant.

To us this points to two things. Firstly, buyers and sellers alike are using Lawyers to protecttheir interest, and secondly, peopleare still buying houses!!

For those unable to sell their property and who have a mortgagebut are struggling, try and renegotiate your mortgage payment period with the Bank. Youmay find that they are rather moreaccommodating than they were!

Finally, if you are selling your property make sure that it is with areputable agent who works withothers for the benefit of all. If youdon´t know one or want advicethen phone us on 96 686 0555 and we will help you!

Hi,Have just read one of the local free papers and there is an article regarding

IBERDROLA they are saying we have to get in touch to register at one of theirdedicated outlets (whereever they may be) failer to do so results in 20% chargeadded to our monthly bills .I thought you would like to know and inform expatsand others that live in Spain all year round.Hope you can find space to put this email in your next magazine or you maybeable to find some information to help us. Christine

Hi, Received your email since sending the above to you there has been another 3articles in different english free newspapers, so my husband went to the information office today with the articles from todays leader she phoned iberdrolastraight away with my husband looking on and they informed her it is only peoplethat are claiming social have to reregister their contract I think somebody shouldtell the free newspapers to check the information given to them and to make surethey have all the information explaining so we know what is going on not half theinformation and causing panic to their readers. As I had already stated this information comes from the electricity company involved. I hope this helps yourreaders so they can stop panicking. Christine.

Thank you Christine . Your information is the same as ours, so thought we would let your findings tell our readers.

Hi Barry & Sandra,Firstly we'd like to express our interest in an allotment - we do miss the garden wehad before moving here. Also, can we just say that the area you mention going down the hill towards thebeach is getting worse. We ourselves don't live opposite so thankfully don't haveto look at it, but we do feel really sorry for those who do. We do, however, walkour dog daily and can see that the area is being used more and more as a dumping ground and as a doggy toilet by people who don't use doggy bags. Asyou can imagine the smell from it, particularly in the warm weather, can be reallyhorrible - why do people assume because it's waste land that they don't have to'pick up'? We've taken several photos this morning of the area and attach herewith.Really enjoy your magazine - keep up the good work.John & Dot Mitchison

Dear Barry And Sandra, I wonder if at your next meeting with Loreto you could ask about signs, in Spanish and English, along with special bins for dog mess along the new walkways along El Clot. The work is not even finished and you cannot walkdown there without difficulty of treading in it. A few fines would not go amiss. Iwalk my dog along there myself but always clean up , Dave Shaw avda Polonia

Shealso had a broken leg and thishas recently been repairedwith surgery. She is like a cuddly Teddy Bear, a playfulmedium size dog. She is nowlooking for a permanent newhome.

This dog was found wanderingaround the beach area close to the

village of La Marina. He has a delightful personality, a very gentle

and easy going character. He likesto be near to people.

We have named him Guapo.

Hi to everybody,

Well in February, apart fromthe cold weather we are having there are specialsthings to do like, once again,Moors and Christians parades, they are held in Sax 1st to 5th , Bocairent also 1st to 5th ,Ibi 6th to 8th and Xixona 20th 24rd . Do never forget that these are dates of reference if yougo, please check first at the Tourist Info the best day to go.

Another activity in February are Carnivals, all Towns along the Costa Blanca celebrate Carnivals, I recommend the one held in Torrevieja. However, if you really want to see something different you should go to see the one held in Aguilas, a bit further down from Cartagena.

To finish I would like to talk about the almond blossom, the inland becomes certainly pretty, almost everybody knows Jalon valley or Guadalest valley but not too many people know myfavourite, which in my opinion is the most beautiful in the all Costa Blanca “El valle de laSeta”, I regularly phone to check to Facheca or Famorca and they tell me when it is in its fullsplendour because nature has no dates, it could be beginning, middle or end of the month whoknows with such a cold weather but it is worth going there.

Byebye friends. for further informationplease ring: 966 692 276

I feel like my body has gotten totally out of shape, So I got my doctor's permission to Join a fitness

club and start exercising. I decided to take an aerobics class for seniors. I bent, twisted, gyrated,

jumped up and down, and perspired for an hour. But, By the time I got my leotards on, The class was over.

On a sunny morning on the day before we went to print,

was the Santa Pola 1/2 marathon and what a spectacle

it was. Hundreds and hundreds of runners filing past,

6,800 in fact. There were two teams that brought top

athletes from Ethiopia and Kenya. If you wanted to

cross the road, you had no chance, as streams of

competitors filed past. Elete runners,

fun runners, runners with dogs,

runners with push chairs, wheelchair

athletes, people of all shapes and

One day a little girl wassitting and watching her

mother do the dishes at thekitchen sink. She suddenly

noticed that her mother had severalstrands of white hair sticking out incontrast on her brunette head.

She looked at her mother and inquisitively asked, 'Why are some ofyour hairs white, Mum?'

Her mother replied, 'Well, every timethat you do something wrong and makeme cry or unhappy, one of my hairsturns white.'

The little girl thought about this revelation for a while and then said,'Mummy, how come ALL of grandma'shairs are white?'

SantaPola

Football Club

played each of the divisions other seventeenteams.

Next, and for the second week in a row SantaPola were away, this time they travelled to Albatera, the team against whom they startedtheir season way back in September. Despitescoring first, ‘Pola were pegged back and theteams ended up one apiece at the finish. Withluck, lowly Albatera will continue to struggleand end up being relegated. In such a competitive but still very friendly league, theystick out like a sore thumb by the manner inwhich their club officials and supporters treatvisiting teams. With two fixtures remaining in January, Santa

Pola sat seventh, four points behind the play off

The story of the turn of the year

By Kevin Rendall

December 2009.........saw Santa Pola compete in just two games, both of which occurred immediately beforeChristmas. The visit of Alfaz del Pi gave localPreferente fans one last opportunity to cheeron their favourites. A decent sized crowdwas well entertained and left happy as SantaPola sauntered to a routine 2-0 win tomaintain their place in the top five.A week later, a difficult fixture on the

plastic pitch in Alguena took on a little extraimportance, as well as being the final leaguegame of the year; it matched up the teams inthird and fourth place in the table. A memorable day out in a very agreeable smallvillage in the mountains was somewhatspoilt by the football, Alguena ran out threenil winners, assisted by some very ruggedtackling that knocked Santa Pola completelyout of their stride. Fifth place in the tablewas where the Marineros ended 2009, a verysatisfactory effort.

And on into 2010.......with a very difficult opening game of theyear at home to league leaders Horadada, who, up to this point had only lost once. Twolate, late Horadada goals extended thatrecord as they beat a plucky Santa Pola whogave their guests a terrific game. One veryrelieved visiting supporter from Pilar suggested that was the hardest game Horadada had played and a 0-2 defeat didn’tdo justice to the Santa Pola performance. The following Saturday Santa Pola made

the short journey to San Vicente, where theytook on and beat Jove Español B by a singlegoal scored by left full back Dani. The gamewas notable for a gale force wind and atemperature that barely crept above zero allafternoon, the travelling supporters, whonearly outnumbered the home fans, were rewarded with all three points. That gameincidentally, ensured Santa Pola had now

places, their record read; played 18, won 9,drawn 3 and lost 6. A really decent effort considering the team was compelled to use two temporary pitches.

Just for fun........if you’d like an alternative view of the seasonso far, I am compiling a weekly blog detailingmy travels watching the region’s footballteams, Elche, Hercules, Murcia and specifically,Santa Pola of course.Visit http://www.ilicipolero.blogspot.com/ andsee what you think.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR TOWN HALL in SANTA POLA to the people of SANTA POLA and GRAN ALACANT.

CAMPAIGN OF AWARENESS ABOUT CLEANLINESSAt this time we are going to talk about establishments which take up public places,

such as areas outside cafés, restaurants, bars, kiosks or street stalls. We would like to remind you that keeping those areas clean is compulsory, without leftovers ofany kind on the ground which are spread by the wind or a brush. That creates a bad image of thebusiness and so of our streets that nobody wants to have, even less living in a touristic townwhere image must be looked after among all of us. We know that there are establishments whichkeep their areas perfectly clean, as it is established in our municipal cleaning ordinance. For thosewho do not, let’s remind what our ordinance says in articles 14 and 15:

Art. 14: Every activity which may make public spaces dirty, whatever place they are being carriedout and without prejudice to the necessary licenses or authorisations, demands that the ownerstake appropriate measures to prevent it, cleaning all the parts affected and removing any waste.

Art. 15: The holders of establishments such as bars, cafés, kiosks or street stalls are forced tokeep their own installations and the public space affected in appropiate conditions. The towncouncil can demand these holders to put officially approved elements for rubbish, whose maintenance falls to the owners.

It is also important that these establishments transport their rubbish in watertight containers toprevent from staining the road when moving to the bins. Liquids must not be thrown to avoid badsmell and dirtiness in the bins. It is forbidden to deposit cartons outside the containers, as well asother packagings. Regarding that, our ordinance says in its articles 6 and 8:

Art. 6: Rubbish must be deposited in closed bags and containing only solid waste.

Art. 8: Citizens must not hinder loading and unloading in the areas where bins are located. Otherwise, the municipal authority will fine that behaviour. Users are forced to deposit rubbish inside the containers.

Finally, let’s remind how important is not to throw oils in wastepipes, since one litre of oil contaminates 10,000 litres of water, so treatment costs are substantially increased.Art. 16: Used oils must be collected by an authorised agent. The holders of the establishmentsmust keep the receipt of the collection done by the agent.

We have a rubbish site where oils can be deposited (by individuals or establishments). Free containers are available at an enterprise located in polígono industrial (Reciclajes alimentarios, 965411060).

We thank all the citizens, the restauration industry and shops for the effort that all those actions toimprove the environment mean.

A REMINDER FOR PETS OWNERS

In this month article we want to remind yousome important things which are not directlyrelated to your pet’s health, but it’s useful toknow them.

An antibodies blood test is requiredfor travelling to the UK. The blood sample mustbe collected at least 4 weeks after the last rabies injection, and after that moment, it takes6 months to the passport to get valid. So, thewhole process takes 7 months, if everythinggoes OK, from the moment you decide to start. After that, we will keep the passport valid bydoing an annual rabies injection. It’s very important doing the injection before the previous one expires (in the Comunidad Valenciana, for example, rabies injection is validfor one year). Otherwise, the passport is nolonger valid for the UK and you have to startfrom zero again.

There are other countries with similar(but NOT equal) requirements for importing pets

than the UK: for example, the weeks you have towait after the last rabies injection for the bloodsampling may vary in other countries, so a passport which is valid for the UK might not bevalid for Sweden and Norway, and the pet maybe stopped at the border.

A similar case would be travelling tomost non-EU countries: no special requirementsfor taking the animal out of the EU (just rabiesand microchip), but a rabies antibodies bloodtest will be required for the re-entry in the EU(and this implies EVERY EU country, even Spain, not only the UK), so if this is your case, you’d better have the animal tested before you go, because finding an official, EU-approved immunology lab may be virtually impossible inmost Third World countries. If the animal hasnever been tested, it will be stopped at the European customs facilities till the quarantine isfinished (in case of the UK, six months), and, ofcourse, we will be obliged to pay for the time theanimal spends at those facilities.

We always recommend to have the animal documents ready to travel just in case, not only for going back to the UK, but for

anywhere we wish to go. Rabies blood test is notexpensive, and revaccinating every year we keepit valid for life.

Nowadays we are seeing lots of casesof people who want to go back quickly to the UK,and some of them didn’t know rabies blood testand 6 months quarantine is mandatory. There isabsolutely nothing a Vet can do for shorteningthis process, and this is the reason because werecommend everybody to have the animal readyto travel: you’ll never know if in the future youwill need to return quickly to the UK.

Another important thing we would liketo remind you is the microchips registration: apet with a British microchip which has neverbeen registered at the European or ComunidadValenciana database can be considered a non-identified animal, because there is practically no way to find the owner in theseconditions. It’s easy to check at home if our petis been registered in these database: just visitthese websites: www.rivia.org (Comunidad Valenciana) and www.europetnet.com (European). The same microchip may be registered in more than one database. Besides,if the pet is been registered in rivia.org, typingthe microchip number and owner’s ID number, you’ll be able to check all the details, downloada form for correcting or updating them, and alsolet the database know the pet has got lost or

robbed. Updating microchip details, or registering here a foreign microchip (which justimplies filling in a form, not removing the old microchip and doing a new one), can be done byevery authorized Vet, not only by the one whochipped the animal.

Sometimes we find chipped animalswhose owner is impossible to find because thedetails (telephone number!!) are wrong, or themicrochip hasn’t been registered in an international database. In this case, there isnothing we can do. If nobody claims for the animal within the following days, he is considered an abandoned animal. If you are notsure of the legal condition of your animal, justask the Vet, and if necessary he will register themicrochip at the local database.

Finally, we would just like to remindyou microchip is mandatory in dogs, and fromthis summer, tattoos are no longer considered avalid, official identification method.

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT?

by Mark Etheridge

There’s an old saying that if it lookslike a duck and quacks like a duck, then it’s probably a duck. This is afairly good rule of thumb for the

birds, but then there are thosesneaky species which look a bit likeone thing, but is actually another. We’re not looking at ducks thismonth but at a rather smaller birdwhich looks a bit like a Robin.Everyone knows the Robin, there areplenty of them in the Clot at thistime of the year, and it’s one of theeasiest birds to identify becausethere’s always a picture of one onthe Christmas card from AuntieMabel. Robins have been estimatedby one authoritative survey (well actually a very dubious internet sitewhich I googled just now) to featurein no less than 17% of all the cardssent at Christmas, so you are

probably fairly sure that a littlechubby bird which looks like a Robinis actually a Robin. But hang on a minute – Robins havered breasts, don’t they? What’s thisone doing with a blue chest then? That’s because it is a Bluethroat, or Pechiazul Comun in Spanish, and asmart little thing it is too. Related tothe Robin in a second-cousin-twice-removed kind of way, at the momentyou will be seeing them in their absolute best bib and tucker, as theyget ready to move north from theirwinter quarters here on the CostaBlanca to North Spain and furtherafield in Europe and on into the wildsteppes of Siberia. They will be lurking in and around the reedbedsin the Clot, feeding on mozzies andother assorted insects, setting themselves up for their long journey, and by the end of March you won’tsee them back here until next October. My picture shows one with a whitespot in the centre of its blue bib, butthey also come in a red-spotted version; this is enough to get youraverage visiting British birder all a-quiver with excitement as he willonly ever see Bluethroats on migration through the UK, and hehas to be extremely lucky (and inthe right place) to do that. I met a Spanish birdwatcher in theClot last year, and when I pointedout to him that there was aBluethroat flitting about in front ofthe new hide, he was very dismissive– “muy comun”, he said scornfully, but he became very interested whenI told him about the birds I haveseen back in Britain. It just goes toshow that one man’s Tesco is another man’s Mercadona, and youmight say that the Bluethroat is theequivalent of Manchego cheese –very difficult to come by in the UK.

See you next month.
