Gram’s OrnamentsBy Barbara Bunsey

I am very blessed to have a collection of my Gram’s ornaments, some dating to the early 20th cen-tury. They are the inspiration for this design.

Palette: DecoArt Americana AcrylicsAntique Gold #13009 Antique Gold Deep #13146Antique Maroon #13160 Avocado #13052 Avocado Dip #13248 Cinnamon Drop #13544 Cranberry Wine #13112 Dark Chocolate #13065 Dioxazine Purple #13101 Evergreen #13082 Honey Brown #13163 Margarita #13541 Milk Chocolate #13174 Navy Blue #13035 Payne’s Grey #13167 Purple Rain #13560 Saffron Yellow #13263 Slate Grey #13068 Soft Black #13155 Warm White #13239 Wedgewood Blue #13038 Wisteria #13211 Zinc #13539Glamour Dust Glitter PaintsCelebration Pink #13599 Emerald Green #13595Gold Glitz #13590 Limelight #13594Silver Bling #13591

Surface: Resin Bucket #80796

Misc. Supplies:Holly & Vines Stencil #70860 DecoArt DuraClear Soft Touch Varnish #72013

Brushes: Papillon by the Artist’s ClubGlaze Wash, size ¾” #20102 Shader, size 10 #20130; size 16 #20133Script Liner, size 0 #20140 Filbert, size 12 #20121Round, size 2 #20158 Highlighter Set #20173

Preparation:There is no preparation necessary, the resin surface comes ready to paint. Any slight imperfec-tions can be lightly sanded. Wipe with a damp cloth.Wash entire background with Dark Chocolate. Since the resin is non-porous, you will need less water in your brush. Using dry 3/4” highlighter, pick up Evergreen, take out excess, pick up Dark Chocolate, take out excess, and scrub onto background under area on design with pine branches. You may want to do this more than once.

Painting Instructions:Pine Branches: Dark: These are mostly indicated by a line on your pattern. Line branch in with

Dark Chocolate. Using the 3/4” highlighter, fairly dry, pick up Evergreen, take out excess and, starting at branch, pull out, using a light touch to create needles; repeat, picking up Avocado; repeat, picking up a bit of Avocado Dip on brush and pulling in toward branch. Add some high-light needles using Avocado Dip and liner. Shade next to branch and where it lays behind an-other object. Shade the branches that are most behind with a brush-mix of Evergreen + Dark Chocolate (approx. 1:1). Light: Add these in after the ornaments are fi nished. Line in branch as above. Repeat steps as above, but start with Avocado and add Margarita for highlights. Also add Margarita on liner for more color. Shade as above.

Ornaments: Purple: This ornament is tucked behind the red and gold ornaments. Undercoat with a brush-mix of Purple Rain and Antique Gold; base Purple Rain. Using dirty brush, pick up Wisteria, blend into brush and add highlight at bottom, putting up toward top, going about halfway up. Add more Wisteria to dirty brush as necessary. Shade across top with Dioxazine Purple.

Blue: Undercoat Wedgewood Blue; base Navy Blue. Using dry 1/4” highlighter, pick up Navy Blue, take out excess, pick up Warm White, blend colors together, taking out excess, and add highlight, beginning in center of area and blending into background. This area should be about the size of a quarter. Repeat, picking up more Warm White in dirty brush, leaving a “halo” of fi rst color showing around; repeat, picking up more Warm White. I did this step about three or four times. Brightest highlight is Warm White on dirty brush, not blended in as much. Shade around ornament with Payne’s Grey and walk in toward highlight; repeat, add-ing Soft Black to dirty brush, not walking in as far.

Red: Undercoat Antique Gold; base Cinnamon Drop. Following directions for highlight on blue ornament, pick up Cinnamon Drop on dry brush, then pick up Saffron Yellow in dirty brush, blend and tap in highlights. The larger one near the center is about the size of a nickel; the smaller

one on the right is a little smaller than a dime. Repeat, picking up more Saffron Yellow in dirty brush; repeat, until you have a nice highlight. Pick up Warm White on dirty brush, blend a bit, and tap in highlight in center of left highlight only. Float around ornament with Cranberry Wine; dry. Pick up Cranberry Wine in dry 1/2” highlighter and reinforce shadow, also pulling this color between the two highlight. I used the 1/2” highlighter, dry, to soften the edges. Pick up Antique Maroon in dirty brush, take out ex-cess, and add more shading, not as wide as the last. Pick up Soft Black in dirty brush and add deepest shadows to left and lower left.

Gold: Undercoat Antique Gold; base Saffron Yellow. Following steps for highlighting on red ornament, pick up Saffron Yellow, then Warm White and begin adding highlights; repeat, pick-ing up more Warm White as necessary. Final highlights are mostly Warm White. Shade around ornament with Honey Brown. Using dry 1/2” highlighter as on the red ornament, rein-force shadow with Honey Brown; repeat, adding Milk Chocolate to dirty brush; repeat, adding Dark Chocolate to dirty brush and apply this at bottom and right side.

Top: Base Slate Grey using #2 round and liner. Shade on both sides and at top next to highlight area with Zinc. Pick up Slate Grey in liner, then Warm White, blend and add lines and highlights; pick up more Warm White in dirty brush and add to brightest highlights. Wash over entire are with Zinc.

Finishing Touches: Add refl ected light to shad-ow areas with Avocado Dip. Using dry 1/4” highlighter, add touches of Cinnamon Drop, then Cranberry Wine on Gold ornament, close to red ornament.

Holly and Berries: Holly: Base Avocado. Add highlights with Avocado Dip, then Margarita, making each fl oat a little narrower. Add touches of Saffron Yellow here-and-there to center and right leaf only.

Veins area: brush-mix of Avocado Dip and Mar-garita. Shade at bottom, at base, inside fl ip and

bottom of fl ip, and under each side vein with Evergreen; repeat, picking up Dark Chocolate in dirty brush and applying only at base.

Berries: Undercoat Antique Gold; base Cin-namon Drop. Pick up Cinnamon Drop on dry brush, then pick up Saffron Yellow in dirty brush, blend and tap in highlights; repeat, add-ing more Saffron Yellow to get a nice highlight; repeat, picking up Warm White in dirty brush and only adding to a few berries. Shade around berries with Cranberry Wine. Add more shading to left side with Antique Maroon; add Soft Black to dirty brush and shade the berries without the white highlight. Refl ected light on just some of the berries is Avocado Dip.

Holly Stencil: Using dry 1/2” highlighter, tap in with Avocado. Tap in Avocado Dip for highlight and Evergreen for shadow. Berries are a brush-mix of Cinnamon Drop and Cranberry Wine. Add a dot of Saffron Yellow for a highlight using a liner brush.

Finishing:Shade behind ornaments with Soft Black. I just did this a little on the right next to the blue ball. Using dry 1/2” highlighter brush Antique Gold on raised bands, then Cinnamon Drop on red bands, highlighted with Saffron Yellow and shaded with Antique Maroon, then Dark Choco-late; green band is Avocado, highlighted with Avocado Dip, shaded with Evergreen, then Dark Chocolate. “Paint” Glamour Dust glitter paint Limelight on all green areas; Celebration Pink on red and purple areas; Emerald on the blue orna-ment; Gold Glitz on the gold ornament; Silver Bling on the ornament top.Finish with DecoArt DuraClear Soft Touch Var-nish.
