Past simple / Present Perfect

1.- Read the text and fill in the missing words. They are all verbs or parts of verbs. One verb uses the present simple base form. Can you say which one it is and why?

I have been here before! Have you 1 ever been (be) in a situation in which you suddenly think, “I have been here before”? Or 2 ................ you ever ................ Grammar Worksheet 11 Definite / Indefinite articles

1.- Look at how the definite article - the - is used in the following sentences:

The food we eat today is quite different to the food our great-grandparents used to eat. Food nowadays contains more additives than in the past.

In the first sentence we are comparing one specific thing to another. (Notice that you are asked to look at the first sentence, not the second. There are only two and we are making a comparison.) In the second sentence we are referring to food in general.

Now read this paragraph:

In the past our ancestors built houses on the banks of a river so they had access to water. These groups of houses became villages, then towns and then cities. The city of London, which was once a small group of houses on the River Thames is a classic example of a riverside development. Can you think of any more?

Why is London referred to as the city of London?

2.- Look at these two sentences.

A river such as the Thames can be the life-blood of a city. A river can provide drinking water, food, a way to keep clean and even a transport system.

Here we are generalising about the different advantages of building a town on the banks of a river, and only name one specific river. It also mentions a way to keep clean. Nowadays we don’t throw ourselves into a river to wash ourselves, nor do we take our washing to the water in big baskets; there are other ways to get clean. But do you know of any other way of washing that does not involve water?

2.- Using got in a passive sentence makes it sound less formal. Rewrite the sentences so that they sound more formal (less like you are chatting with a friend). You will also need to change some words (bike bicycle) and phrasal verbs (put in install).
