OVERVIEW
BroadWorks Communicator is an audio and video SIP softphone for Windows 2000 and XP that is tightly integrated with the BroadWorksplatform. The Communicator has access to BroadWorks' many advanced VoIP features such as video services, complete call control, and messaging/voicemail integration.
BroadWorks Communicator is a feature-rich desktop application that allows residential users and businesses to utilize the client as a primary or secondary phone device for their IP communications services. As an integrated device with the BroadWorks platform, service providers are able to auto provision the client, provide automatic updates, and version management seamlessly through the BroadWorks application server. A key benefit of integration for users is the central storage of contacts, eliminating the need to duplicate contact lists.
BroadWorks Communicator allows for the separation of the audio and video stream for redirection of audio to a headset and video to the desktop. This separation provides maximum flexibility and options for end-users.

Leveraging deep experience of integrating existing open-source technologies, Grameen developed the prototype in just 6 months and took the concept to commercial release in just 1 year, providing full lifecycle solution including initial R&D to QA to deployment.

With core contribution from Grameen’s dedicated cost-effective offshore team, Vonair licensed the next-generation software to industry leader BroadSoft.
With the softphone in their offering, BroadSoft ensured stronger presence in the market and even received an important industry award for the innovativeness of the product.
CHALLENGES
Developing a next-generation softphone in just one year time-frame that would compete with offerings from well-established players in the space was a great challenge.
Only way to reduce time to market was to integrate as many commercial and open source components possible, creating a big architectural challenge.

BUSINESS SITUATION
Polycom had just started to market the SoundStation IP 400 and 600 phones, which had a built-in micro-browser capable of rendering CHTML pages. Users could go from link to link and activate hyperlinks by using hardware buttons around the small screen.
Polycom wanted to develop a showcase application to be demonstrated to prospective customers in a conference. They had developed simple applications like stock-ticker and quote-of-the-day in-house. But this time, they wanted to show a capable application with real-life value for enterprise use.
WHY GRAMEEN?
Vonair, Grameen’s partner, was impressed with a contacts information management technology developed by Grameen for another Vonair project that integrates well with BroadSoft’s BroadWorks platform. Though in time pressure in the original project, Grameen had developed a reusable set of connectors, a generic contacts information management framework, and a provisioning solution.
Grameen, Vonair and Polycom worked out a spec to develop a “phonetop” application that would run in the micro-browser and take advantage of Grameen’s pre-existing components and features of BroadWorks platform.

OVERVIEW
The application is targeted to users who use Polycom phone in a BroadWorks IP PBX environment. Using the application running on the phone’s micro-browser, one can log-in to a micro-portal which gives access to the following items:
• User’s Call History (including calls made by the user from other phones or softphones)• User’s Phone Book (including contacts information from Microsoft Outlook, Exchange, LDAP and BroadWorks Contacts Lists)• User’s Personalized Phone Preferences (like ringing preference, find-me/follow-me preference, etc.)
As the user logs in to the application using the phone’s keypad, the phone instantly gets personalized for her giving her access to all the frequently needed useful information and settings. From both the call history and phone book, numbers can be dialed by just pressing the dial hard-key in the phone.
The server-side application was built so that it can run on the same server as BroadWorks as an add-on app without requiring any additional server resource.

OVERVIEW
Lucent had developed a softphone for Sun’s Solaris 9 on SPARC platform. Sun needed to port the application to Solaris 10 in x86 platform. Grameen engineers solved key problems in the porting.
In the process, Grameen also built the first port of the Eclipse IDE for Solaris x86 and shared with the global developer community.

OVERVIEW
Vonair Communicator is a full-fledged audio and video SIP softphone for Windows Mobile.
One of the challenges in this project was to maintain future cross-platform compatibility (Palm OS was targeted as the next platform), J2ME was used in the application layer. Unfortunately, the J2ME platform did not have a complete audio API required for an advanced softphone.
To address this, Grameen ported Sun’s Java Sound API originally written for Windows XP to Windows Mobile. This was technically difficult since there were lot of device level and performance issues that required innovative solutions.
Another obvious challenge was to accommodate simultaneous capture and playing of both audio and video within a very limited processing power of mainstream Pocket PCs.

OVERVIEW
This is a web-based edition of Vonair Communicator complete with an end-user provisioning portal.
Users can just go to the carrier-designated web page to configure and launch the phone. The phone would use local computing devices to interact. Users can also use the accompanying provisioning portal to configure various aspects of the phone or their service preferences.
The challenge was to use limited technology options within a browser environment and optimize load times.
The prototype was developed for Internet Explorer. The phone was implemented using Java Applet technology. The ultimate goal was a browser-based phone that can be used even from mobile devices.

OVERVIEW
Vonair wanted to develop a technology which will combine existing location positioning technologies with carrier-side call processing and location-based push information or advertisement. BroadSoft had developed a unique XML-based call processing language which (CPL) can invoke remote web services at any step of processing a call and can act based on output from the web service.
Grameen developed an add-on solution for Vonair Communicator, which gets a user’s location information from a location positioning engine and feeds this information when invoked by a special CPL script running in BroadWorks server . Based on customizable rule-based logic in the CPL script, the server can then process the call according to the user’s preferences.
The result was a configuration screen built-into the softphone, where users can set complex rule-based preferences like “If I am in the conference room and the time of the day is 2pm-4pm then send the call to John, however, if it’s a call from a person tagged as VIP in my phone book, then ring my phone”.
The same technology was used for a location-based info-ad solution, where users can automatically receive information or ads in their mobile devices based on their location.
A commercial location positioning engine was integrated for indoor wi-fi and an open source location positioning engine was used for outdoor wi-fi scenario.

OVERVIEW
BroadWorks platform had four different mechanisms for third-party application developers to interact with it. These ranged from CORBA over HTTP to XML over TCP. There was no native interface for J2EE server-side applications.
Grameen developed JCA (J2EE Connection Architecture)-compliant resource adapters for those heterogeneous interfaces. The resource adapters provided the following benefits to application developers over original mechanisms:
• Native object method calls can be made from any J2EE application• Original XML APIs can be used together with new XML-based calls• Transactional calls• Call-backs by resource adapters without engaging any resource• Secure messaging• Elimination of 90% effort in setting up connections with BroadWorks back-end• Pooling of connections that minimizes resource use

OVERVIEW
BroadWorks user provisioning portal was designed for regular browsers in desktop. Users could not use it efficiently from mobile browsers like Pocket Internet Explorer.
The aim of this project was to redesign key parts of BroadWorks user portal for mobile browsers taking into account usability aspects in small-screen device. The user portal integrated with BroadWorks server through JCA-compliant Resource Adapters, also developed by Grameen.

OVERVIEW
This system addresses the problem of contact data retrieval and synchronization across many heterogeneous sources like Microsoft Outlook, Pocket Outlook, Microsoft Exchange, LDAP and non standard sources like BroadWorks Contact Lists.
SyncML was used as the protocol for synchronization. The server allowed client applications to easily retrieve contact data by web services. A client for Pocket Internet Explorer was developed.

The Netria Client Management System (CMS) simplifies the management of end-user terminals, such as IP phones, PDAs, mobile clients, gateways and softphones. The Netria CMS provides:
• Automated Provisioning and Activation: reducing the cost of both acquisition of the customer and initial deployment of the client• Integrated Service Configuration: reducing the maintenance cost of moves, adds and changes• Software Management: reducing the cost of maintaining and supporting client upgrades and fixes• Monitoring and Reporting: reducing the cost of troubleshooting customer calls, while at the same time simplifying the tracking of service level agreements
In an IP Multimedia Services (IMS) network, end-user services may be hosted on one or more application servers in the IMS core. This hosting is transparent to the user, however. To the user, the client is the service. The Netria CMS is designed to provide seamless delivery of multiple services from different network-based application platforms through a single end-user client.
The Netria CMS works with leading service delivery platforms in the industry such as BroadSoft's BroadWorks VoIP application platform. Grameen took the challenge to bring Pragma’s client offerings at par with competition. In less than a year, Grameen delivered improved versions of Telnet and FTP clients for Pocket PC and Windows.
REALIZED BENEFIT
Pragma now bundles their own SSH/Telnet/FTP/SFTP clients when they offer their server software. Software developed by Grameen is used in more than 1000 Pragma clients worldwide.
