Introdução

Você tem em mãos um manual de autoestudo para compreender como são formadas

e usadas todas as estruturas relevantes da língua inglesa. Os tópicos abordados nesta

gramática compreendem os conteúdos dos cursos de inglês, sejam quais forem, pois

todos os métodos precisam desenvolver no aprendiz os conhecimentos aqui apresentados.

A forma como está estruturado o conteúdo, em tópicos que podem ser lidos de

maneira independente com imediata abordagem do que é relevante em cada um (usos,

organização, observações importantes etc.), assegura ao leitor a objetividade e a pratici-

dade exigidas em uma obra de consulta desse tipo. Havendo interesse em aprofundar-se,

porém, o leitor poderá consultar os demais tópicos do mesmo capítulo, ou ainda fazer

uso das numerosas referências cruzadas ao longo do livro.

Os tópicos são fartamente exemplificados com usos naturais do tema que abordam.

Os exemplos apresentados tendem a ilustrar usos do inglês americano, porém, não se

limitam a eles. Sempre que possível, privilegiamos aquilo que podemos chamar de

universal e internacional a respeito do idioma. Cada tópico vem acrescido de exercícios

de múltipla escolha, com respostas no final do volume. Os exercícios têm a finalidade

de revisar o conteúdo trabalhado, direcionando essa revisão aos usos mais prováveis

que o leitor fará daquilo que acabou de ver ou rever.

Os tópicos são ricos em explicações voltadas para o falante de português, as quais

são marcadas com o símbolo . Um hífen (-) antes ou no final de um termo significa

que este faz parte de uma palavra ou está sendo considerado como tal. Por exemplo,

-er é uma parte de palavra que acrescentamos a alguns adjetivos na forma comparativa,

como long, longer. Igualmente, less é uma palavra, mas representada -less indica

a parte de palavra, ou sufixo, que forma adjetivos, apontando genericamente uma falta

daquilo que inicia a palavra: countless, incontável.

O capítulo CONTRASTES IMPORTANTES é voltado para nossas dificuldades

específicas como falantes de português, uma vez que trata de diferenças que não exis-

tem em nossa língua e de usos diversos em inglês que são traduzidos da mesma forma

em português.

Reflexão Importante

É possível expressar-se rica e corretamente em um idioma e não ser capaz de formular

uma regra gramatical sequer. Isso ocorre à medida que estamos imersos naquele idioma

e à proporção que aumentamos nosso contato e nossa familiaridade.

Então, poderíamos nos perguntar, para que, afinal, serve uma gramática?

Se estivermos falando da língua que nascemos falando, talvez haja mesmo um uso

muito reduzido para tal obra, sobretudo se atendermos às exigências de contato constante

e estímulo repetido através de leitura e escrita, enfim, através de uso intenso. Contudo,

para uma segunda ou terceira língua (ou quarta, ou quinta...), só podemos contar com

a situação descrita acima idealmente; na prática, precisamos de bons exemplos de usos

das estruturas, saber como elas são formadas e em que situação são usadas e, possivel-

mente, também fazer exercícios para testarmos nosso domínio específico sobre seu uso.

Uma gramática pode detalhar exceções, ser uma fonte exaustiva que ilustre todos

os casos em que usamos essa ou aquela estrutura e, assim, enfastiar o leitor até os

limites de mantê-la fechada e sem uso na prateleira, pegando pó. Contrastivamente,

pode ser uma obra amiga, que explica de forma objetiva e clara onde e como usar o

quê. Esperamos que este manual sirva ao segundo propósito, tirando dúvidas sobre

estruturas, mostrando como elas são formadas e oferecendo exemplos e exercícios úteis

para ilustrar o exposto.

É importante ressalvar que o leitor dificilmente aprenderá a usar um item da gramática

a partir apenas de sua leitura ou somente fazendo exercícios. A maneira de incorporar

esse tipo de conhecimento é permanecendo em contato continuado com o idioma, ob-

servando seus usos e procurando as oportunidades de uso e prática do que você aprende

ou revisa que façam sentido comunicativo para você. Tendo isso em mente, qualquer

material referente a bons usos do idioma será bem-vindo e, como tal, esperamos que a

Gramática de Inglês para Brasileiros seja sua grande amiga no processo de esclarecer e

dominar progressivamente a língua inglesa.

ll As formas curtas ou contraídas (contracted forms) têm uma pronúncia própria

e diferente das formas não contraídas. De modo geral, é como se lê a consoante

que “sobra” do to be usado na forma contraída. O ’s terá som de /z/ ou de /s/, conforme o som que o anteceder:

I’m /áim/He’s /ríz/ ou It’s /its/We’re /uír/

ll O uso de formas não contraídas em geral indica que você quer chamar atenção

especial para o que está dizendo: Is he not an expert in his area?

ll To be (e suas formas) é traduzido por “ser” (e suas formas) e “es-tar” (e suas formas). O contexto informa se é um ou outro; muitas vezes, podem ser ambos.

ll “Ficar”, nos sentidos de “tornar-se” e “estar localizado”, é correta-mente traduzido por to be (e suas formas), jamais por stay.

ll Observe a posição do to be no final do período — quando unimos duas orações e ele ocorre na oração iniciada por um pronome rela-tivo (what, that, where, who etc.): She knows where the cups

ll Usamos there + be (e suas formas) no presente e no passado para expressar

“existência”, nesses dois tempos verbais, respectivamente. O significado é o

mesmo de “haver/existir/ter”.

ll Usamos there is/was antes de um substantivo no singular ou de um substantivo

incontável: There is a ladybird on your shoulder. There was a wet towel

on your bed and now it’s partially wet too. Usamos there are/were antes

de substantivos no plural: There are some rocks in my beans. There were 5

meters missing to reach the mountain top.

ll Para frases negativas, em geral, usamos as formas contraídas: there isn’t/wasn’t

e there aren’t/weren’t: There isn’t anything wrong with your hair, it just

looks strange now that you died it pink. There aren’t many people here

yet. There wasn’t a single person out there in the woods last night, but

this morning there were many footsteps on the snow.

ll Para perguntas, use, genericamente, a estrutura be + there ...? ou be + not

contraído + there para perguntas negativas: Is there anything I can help you

with? Weren’t there any signs to follow on the road on which you got

lost? Se você quiser ser enfático, não contraia o not; use be + there + not: Was

there not anyone you could talk to and ask for help?

ll Be em there + be (e suas formas) é contraído da mesma maneira que ocorre

com nomes ou pronomes. Veja também: Verb To Be: Present Tense — Verbo
