VERBS

• Verbs are ACTION WORDS or words like am, is, or are that describe people or things.

• The infinitive of a verb is the form that has not been conjugated.– English infinitives always start with the word “to.”

• Conjugation is the process of changing a verb when you use it with a specific subject (or person).

Ser: the verb “to be”• In English, the verb “to be” is the most common verb.

I am Carlos. We are from Argentina.

You are from Managua. You are high school students.

He is my classmate. They are my friends. • In Spanish “ser” means “to be”• “Ser” is the infinitive. The conjugated forms of both

verbs are:

Conjugation• When you conjugate a verb, first identify

• To describe someone as NOT being a certain way, put the word no before the verb:– Yo no soy estudiante. I am not a student.– Él no es inteligente. He is not intelligent.

• In Spanish, the word no always goes before the verb.

Punctuation marks and written accents

• In Spanish, we use upside-down punctuation marks such as (¿) and (¡) are placed at the beginning of a question or exclamation. – ¡Hasta luego!– ¿Cómo se llama ella?


• In Spanish, some words have written accent marks. An accent mark is a tilted line (‘) placed over a vowel.– Adiós.– ¿Cuál?

• Accent marks are part of Spanish spelling. They must be memorized.


• The wavy line in the letter (ñ) is called a tilde. The (ñ) is pronounced similar to the ny in canyon.– compañero– señor
