INFECTIOUS DISEASE
IN ENGLAND AND WALES DURING THE WEEK ENDED
SEPT. 12TH, 1936
’Notifications.-The following cases of infectiousdisease were notified during the week : Small-pox, 0 ;scarlet fever, 1594 ; diphtheria, 1026 ; enteric fever,163 ; pneumonia (primary or influenzal), 373 ; puer-peral fever, 42 ; puerperal pyrexia, 115 ; cerebro-spinal fever, 12 ; acute poliomyelitis, 20 ; acutepolio-encephalitis, 2 ; encephalitis lethargica, 8 ;dysentery, 12 ; ophthalmia neonatorum, 84. Nocase of cholera, plague, or typhus fever was notifiedduring the week.
Of the 163 notifications of enteric fever the county of Durhamprovided 12 (scattered over 9 urban and rural districts), London15 (in 11 boroughs), Southampton 49 (Bournemouth 41, Christ-church 4), Dorset 5 (Poole 4, Swanage 1).The number of cases in the Infectious Hospitals of the London
County Council on Sept. 18th was 2684, which included : Scarletfever, 845 ; diphtheria, 740 ; measles, 113 ; whooping-cough,418 ; puerperal fever, 13 mothers (plus 6 babies) ; encepha-litis lethargica, 284 ; poliomyelitis, 2. At St. Margaret’sHospital there were 16 babies (plus 9 mothers) with ophthalmianeonatorum.
Deaths.-In 122 great towns, including London,there was no death from small-pox, 17 (3) from entericfever, 6 (0) from measles, 1 (0) from scarlet fever,18 (4) from whooping-cough, 26 (7) from diphtheria,59 (22) from diarrhoea and enteritis under two years,and 10 (1) from influenza. The figures in parenthesespre those for London itself.The deaths from enteric fever outside London occurred at
Poole 8, Bournemouth 3, Beckenham, Harrow, and Hornseyeach 1. Birmingham and Bristol each had 3 deaths fromwhooping-cough.
The number of stillbirths notified during the weekwas 262 (corresponding to a rate of 40 per 1000total births), including 41 in London.
