INFECTIOUS DISEASE IN ENGLAND AND WALES DURING THE WEEK ENDED SEPT. 12TH, 1936 ’Notifications.-The following cases of infectious disease were notified during the week : Small-pox, 0 ; scarlet fever, 1594 ; diphtheria, 1026 ; enteric fever, 163 ; pneumonia (primary or influenzal), 373 ; puer- peral fever, 42 ; puerperal pyrexia, 115 ; cerebro- spinal fever, 12 ; acute poliomyelitis, 20 ; acute polio-encephalitis, 2 ; encephalitis lethargica, 8 ; dysentery, 12 ; ophthalmia neonatorum, 84. No case of cholera, plague, or typhus fever was notified during the week. Of the 163 notifications of enteric fever the county of Durham provided 12 (scattered over 9 urban and rural districts), London 15 (in 11 boroughs), Southampton 49 (Bournemouth 41, Christ- church 4), Dorset 5 (Poole 4, Swanage 1). The number of cases in the Infectious Hospitals of the London County Council on Sept. 18th was 2684, which included : Scarlet fever, 845 ; diphtheria, 740 ; measles, 113 ; whooping-cough, 418 ; puerperal fever, 13 mothers (plus 6 babies) ; encepha- litis lethargica, 284 ; poliomyelitis, 2. At St. Margaret’s Hospital there were 16 babies (plus 9 mothers) with ophthalmia neonatorum. Deaths.-In 122 great towns, including London, there was no death from small-pox, 17 (3) from enteric fever, 6 (0) from measles, 1 (0) from scarlet fever, 18 (4) from whooping-cough, 26 (7) from diphtheria, 59 (22) from diarrhoea and enteritis under two years, and 10 (1) from influenza. The figures in parentheses pre those for London itself. The deaths from enteric fever outside London occurred at Poole 8, Bournemouth 3, Beckenham, Harrow, and Hornsey each 1. Birmingham and Bristol each had 3 deaths from whooping-cough. The number of stillbirths notified during the week was 262 (corresponding to a rate of 40 per 1000 total births), including 41 in London.
