Victoria Ransom was named New Zealand's wealthiest individualwoman, coming in at 38th worth $315m.

Raised in Rangitikei, Ransom banked a reported $400m when her social media marketing company Wildfire wasbought by Google in 2012.

The 2015 rich list adds a record 15 new entrants, with a combined worth of more than $1.2b.

In 2014 there were 13 newcomers to the list and 12 the year before that.

To make the list, individuals or families must be worth $50m or more.

The most well-known 2015 newcomer is yachting legend Sir Russell Coutts, who is paid an annual salary of$13m from Oracle Team USA, the NBR said.

He also owns properties across New Zealand including a dairy estate in Central Otago and Crown Range Estatenear Queenstown, complete with a nine-hole golf course.

New Zealanders on the list were collectively worth 7.4 per cent more than 2014.

In 2014, rich listers had a combined wealth of $51.2b, up from $47.9b in 2013.

In 2015, filmmaker Sir Peter Jackson's wealth increased by $30m to $630m ranking him 14th, Prime MinisterJohn Key's wealth stayed the same at $55m and Sir Bob Jones' wealth increased from $600m in 2014 to $620m.

Xero chief executive Rod Drury's ranking slipped from 12th in 2014 to 18th in 2015 with his net worth falling$230m from $780m to $550m.

Drury, who has a 16 per cent stake in the accounting software company he founded, told the NBR he was "all inon Xero", when asked about his other investments.

Xero shares have fallen 30 per cent over the past 12 months.

NBR news editor Duncan Bridgeman said much of the wealth held by individuals and families on the list wasundisclosed.

However, the growth in the total value of the list was an indication that most of those that feature had grown theirassets over the past 12 months, he said.

"We have had some reductions in the value of some on the list, but that is far outweighed by the increases and thenewcomers we have identified," Bridgeman said.

University of Auckland business school accounting professor Jilnaught Wong said wealthy entrepreneursbelieved in themselves and surrounded themselves with the right people.

"They are clearly visionary people," Wong said.

Wealthy business people were proactive in pursuing opportunities and did not rely on luck, he said.

"They are driven, it's not a hobby," Wong said.

"Where other people see hurdles, these people see opportunities."

Wong said there were bound to be individuals on the list who were highly leveraged.

"They're also very, very disciplined in how they do it."

Privateer 58 days agoIt takes all sorts to make a society run, we can't all be billionaires, and not all of us want or need to be.Could the average person imagine a life where you don't know if you are surrounded by fleas or friends?A life where people who don't even know you threaten and bag you? It's small wonder when many Kiwissucceed the first thing they do is skip the country. Unfortunately NZ's tall poppy syndrome Is like a virus.

Everyone is important in a society, look after the professionals, let them have a decent standard of livingfor their efforts and they will look after you. When people are doing three jobs just to have shelter andfood while CEO's are making millions it's inevitable tensions will rise. CEO's head's are on the choppingblock, it is not easy and they deserve the lions share. But you can't have one without the other.

A nations resources should benefit all the people. Gain full employment is a start.

Some proper financial education would be a real advantage in our schools.

willieC 59 days agoGood on them,if a tow truck driver can get to #1 on the rich list then anyone can if they applythemselves,it's not as if Graham Hart was given the silver spoon. As for me i'm quite content working41.25 hours a week and getting my pay.

Ivan 59 days agoThese rich lists are a bit of a joke. What they should say is that the person has this much in their name, but this much is owned by the bank, and there are many millions owed on it. Show the percentage that isactually theirs with no debt on it. Until that debt is paid off, it's not really their wealth, is it.

Stan 59 days agoIm richer than most, and I distribute back to the economy by spending it.

Rich people should spend their wealth, its far better to support a business by spending, then justdonating and giving handouts.

i.e A rich person building a $10m mansion contributes hugely to the businesses building it, and thebusinesses supplying the builders

A rich person buying a super yacht, supports the yacht building business's in Auckland and thesuppliers to those businesses.

Encourage the wealthy to spend, its a win win for everyone. Just advocating more taxes, caps on incomeis pointless and wont work,

Its the whole give someone a fish they can eat for a day, but give them a fishing rod they eat for a lifetime.

Support business, and you support people.

Privateer 58 days agoWell said Stan, good to hear you're enjoying the fruits of your hard work. Hell yes, spend it that'smakes the economy tick! Paying people more so they have money to spend is what get'sthings moving. For me the problem is profiteering, at the expense of those who work hard andhave the skills to make it all happen.

CleoGeorge 59 days agoWithout workers, these guys can't make a cent.

john_jeremy 59 days agoEveryone needs to work anyway, kind of a weird comment to make. Unless you mean that theycouldn't get rich from beneficiaries, so need workers?

Privateer 58 days agoNot really it's the truth, someone has to turn the spanners. But with out these guys theworkers have no jobs.

Harry Henderson 59 days agoIf you're feeling down by reading about these rich people just remember, every one of you is richer thanGreece.

Now lets do a top 10 list of highest Candy Crush scores and see who comes out on top.

MOABONES 60 days agoMy family use to be rich – Land rich, than a guy named Cook showed up. All downhill from there.

Been_Benuane 60 days agoWhy does anyone need to even comment about this?

Tom Ranger 60 days agoHi guys...I remember seeing an "Inside New Zealand" Episode - It discussed creating a Maximum wagethen linking it to the minimum wage... for the maximum wage to go up the minimum had to go up more...therefore making the gap between rich & poor smaller... It sounded lilke a good idea in theory. Will it everhappen... - not as long as we are all happy enough to watch thing's happen... So I agree with both sidesof the commenters here... It is a good thing to have wealth in the country sure... but the system could befairer... PAYE employees pay more tax than any corporate for example... Corporates also causeenvironmental impact which is hardly ever addressed...and instead the tax-payer ends up paying for thecleanup.... (Like Oilstorm Rena) encourage discussion & keep a cool head about thing's guy's... I knowit's an emotional topic.

Privateer 60 days agoA visit to Denmark, Norway or any Scandinavian country where people have high minimumliving standards is very enlightening. Spot the poverty there? Amazing what most achieve whenthey aren't hungry to begin with. The Vikings have it right. Government for the real interests ofthe people. Those who like to winge about social welfare and most importantly the DPBobviously haven't seen much. In the real world solo mums often work on the streets, the poorkids never have chance. By the way I support capitalism and enterprise, that's what makes asociety progress. I'm also a professional in the highest tax bracket. Balance and education isimportant if we want to maintain our high standard of living. We have one of the best countriesin the world, good on you Mr Hart for playing smart and winning.

John Smith2nd 60 days agoas high achievers it's always important to remember our roots & route to being onhigh.

I have started a deconstruction process of now giving back, more than I took out. Ican't take it when I die, and have no wish to richen the lives of family who can work forthemselves with all the advantages I have given them. Im not even close to the NBR levels of wealth, but what I lack in cash I make up for inexperiences. And that I give for free to any who want it and are prepared to use it tobetter themselves and the family/community around them

My2bobsWorth 59 days agoYeah I have noticed how the standard of of living for the average New Zealander hasimproved so much since 1984.

Stan 59 days agoSo if you have a maximum wage, and your company you started makes a large profit, do youjust forfeit this profit to the government?.

Where's the incentive to start a business in the first place?

Maximum wage is a terrible idea. Corporate profit can only be spent personally oncedistributed from the company, and then taxed in the hands of the individuals, ie dividends orshareholder salary.

The wealthy already pay the lions share of tax in NZ, that's FACT.

phobius 60 days agoPeople who have genuine ideas, take tisks and succeed - kudos to them. People like "CEOs" who donothing for big paychecks, not so much

Privateer 60 days agoProblem is not people getting rich, enterprise is the reason we all have jobs in the first place. Those withthe knowledge and balls to become business leaders; good on them.

The problem is profit for profit sake, All industries require skilled workers many of whom go throughextreme difficulty's to achieve their position. All most people want and need is the ability to pursuehappiness, shelter, food and the ability to raise there children in a stable environment. When those whoare prepared to work hard to achieve this are denied this while CEO's are earning millions off theirback's the discontent starts.

Replacing your workforce with cheap foreign labor so only a few elites can benefit from a countriesresources is sanctimonious to treason. NZ's fishing industry is a prime example of this.

Balance is the key, We go too far to the right we become a nation of serfs, too far to the left then the tailwags the dog and we go backwards. In a perfect world we wouldn't need Unions. Read books and studyhistory, find out what happens when you become a parasite to society instead of a leader.

whatever next 60 days agoSo our Dear Leader is right, for a change, there is a Rock Star Economy somewhere out there, for a handful few.. Why not provide details on taxes paid by our good old friends? Or money owed?

I recall only a few years ago there were some very rich people listed, only to be declared bankrupt or insolvent a bit later... at the expense of the so-called little people.

fastpoose 60 days agoSo many socialist comments... such envy, such hate. Good on the wealthy, usually from much hard workand RISK. All the rich get richer talk. The so called 'poor' have never had it so good. The poverty strickencan go to the supermarket buy food, all have tv's, washers, dryers, phones...gimmie a break. Great work,it's a great sign for an economy.

Haters will hate....

kejomu 60 days agoeat the rich before they eat you

yosarian1971 60 days agoCan you show me one skerrick of evidence of people suffering directly linked to anyone on therich list?

ClunkingFist 60 days agoAnd yet studies show we are ALL living longer, more materially rich, lives. So perhaps the rich DON'T get poor at the expense of ordinary folk... perhaps the rich employpeople, spend some of their money, pay a lot of tax, so that we are all better off? Sure, they may a lower PERCENTAGE tax than I pay, but they probably pay many times more intax than I earn gross income.

Mike_Hunt_1 61 days agoI work nearly 3000 hours a year, all shift work, and get taxed mega bucks on that and pay gst oneverything, I nearly give half my wage to the government. My aim is to get mortgage free but it seems thepeople at the top just keep the little guys down.

cspace 60 days ago'The people who know how work for the people who know why'

Stan 60 days agoYou wont get rich doing what you're doing then.

You need to mortgage you house to the max, and invest the whole lot into a business you start, then run it into a multi million dollar business whilst not going broke.

Easy.

yosarian1971 60 days agoPut the same amount of effort into your own business.

Working for someone else will never get you rich. Graeme Hart used to be a tow truck driver...orso the legend is told.

John Smith2nd 60 days agoactually a delivery driver for huttons and chilled products.

I know as I drove the other route for the company for 18 months and saw him mostmornings.

Josh Hua 61 days agowe need to stop this unnecessary wealth accumulation, we cant take it with us, we cant spend it all, there needs to be a cap on how much you can be worth or have, then you should step down and letsomeone else have a chance to earn, thousands of people work, that dont need to work because theyhave too much, then theres thousands who have nothing and want to work but cant,

cspace 60 days agoThey tried that in Russia, didn't work. China seems to be embracing the more capitalisticviewpoint these days too.

John Smith2nd 60 days agothey didn't, what they did do was state own everything, and then found out the hardway that people in reality are lazy and will always defer to letting someone else do thejob first.

Stan 60 days agoAfter a point its not about wealth.

A cap on how much you can have?. I think you have too much, please give it to me.

MarkT 60 days agoProfit and accumulated wealth is a sign that the value of the goods you're producing exceedsthe value you're consuming - just as losses are a sign that you're consuming more than you'reproducing. In a non-market economy (either socialist or corporatist) there aren't these signals, hence wealth destruction and poverty are the result. These people don't have these sumssitting in a bank account, their wealth is for the most part employed in productive enterprisesthat are producing products and jobs that benefits us all. Why would we want them to stop!?

hemihua 60 days agoThere are plenty of other entire countries with less income, wealth and material wellbeing too -are you proposing we share with them too and all become worse off? Of course not - peoplecherry pick a few rich people in their own country and say 'gimme summadat'. Spend your lifeenvying others and you won't have enough time to appreciate what you have, and how good wehave it in this country compared to the majority of the world's population.

Stan 61 days agoAll the tall poppy cutters out in force again..

ENVY is a horrible trait.

fatherted99 61 days agoIf envy means being concerned that a lot of people are in poverty while people enrichthemselves off their vulnerability then count me in.

Stan 60 days agoNope, the rich are not feeding off the poor, its not like that. Why do you assume it is?.

I know the loony left like to paint that picture, but the reality is far from the truth

cspace 61 days agoWay too easy to throw all this into the so-called 'tall poppy' bin. Relative success is one thingbut history tells us over and over that there's a lot more to it than that when you're talking aboutobscene wealth.

TravisPiwakawaka 61 days agoIt's good to see most comments are supportive. I am confident that most on the list would not only pay agood amount of tax but also donate to charities. I am involved in a charity that has received donationsfrom people on the list. You can create wealth without harming or taking from others. It's also true thatwealth can also be created by taking from others and the environment. I'm an optimist and I am inspiredby The Giving Pledge which has seen 128 billionaires from around the world pledge to give away atleast half their wealth to charity (Gates (28bn given so far), Buffet, Rockerfeller, Zuckerberg, Craft, Allen,Musk, Hilton......)

DavidL31 61 days agoActually, you can't accumulate vast amounts of wealth without harming others, because you areaccumulating an ever bigger slice of the pie and squeezing the working and middle class inthe process.

FATS 60 days agoActually, you can. You can do it because you recognise a business's potential(Graeme Hart) or because you come up with a great product like trademe (SamMorgan) or because you make great films (Peter Jackson) or because you're one ofthe best yachtsmen in the world (Russell Coutts).

Your comment is typical of the myopic tall-poppy syndrome crowd that won't get offtheir bums and make something of themselves, and criticise people who dosomething creative. Steve Jobs was rich because of his drive and creative genius. Hegave us the Apple line of products. He didn't do it by ripping anyone off.

Lose the chip on your shoulder.

HOOF_HEARTED 60 days agoRubbish the pie is not one set size, are your really saying there was trillions of dollarsback in the 1500s?, the pie grows all the time, you determine how much of it you get.

Stan 60 days agoWrong, they make the pie bigger.

MarkT 60 days agoThe flaw in your thinking is that it's not a zero-sum game where the size of the pie isfixed. These people don't steal pies from you and me, they bake their own pies. In afree market where your wealth is earned by voluntary exchange (i.e. without gov'tfavours) you can only grow wealthy by benefitting others. Helping others may not betheir motivation (and nor should it be), but in reality that is the only way you canbecome wealthy without gov't favours.

hemihua 60 days agoHow dare those rich people create successful businesses, where the working andmiddle class VOLUNTARILY hand their cash over! If we put more money in the handsof spenders so they can drive the prices up and end up in the same relative positionthey were to begin with (or give more money to the banks to afford already over-pricedproperty). Too much economic intervention is a bad thing, the market always wins.

John Smith2nd 60 days agoI take exception to PJ and great films, based on his last 3 poor and hashed jobofferings.

John Smith2nd 60 days agohoof and stan- wrong, modern banking is they imagine a bigger pie, the resourcesare the same amount today as in 1500. The difference is in the new ways to value it.

1 ounce of gold in 1500 is still 1 ounce of gold in 2015. The only difference is in thearbitrary value placed on it. and ironically it could be argued that today the cost to recover 1 ounce of gold isproportionally less than in 1500. So in reality the real cost is inflated and onlyimaginary. The one wise thing my father always said was nothing has any value, except thatwhich another is prepared to place value on. To me the only priceless commodity is wisdom and knowledge, as nothing else canexist without it.

igb 60 days agoI have nothing against any of these people.. the system itself is the thing that's broken.

As an example the US had an upper tax rate of 90% back in the 50s and that was consideredperfectly reasonable at the time and economies were booming. Its changed slowly andsteadily to favor the rich so much that we now consider it to be normal that some workingadults have to skip the occasional meal to get by while those at the top have such obsceneamounts of money

ClunkingFist 60 days agoEveryone simply evaded and avoided that high tax rate. The rules have tightened upand the rates have flattened.

Peter37 61 days agoNational in around 10 years is it any wonder!!

HOOF_HEARTED 60 days agoI stubbed my toe today, damn you John Key, pathetic.

Durriedee 61 days agoThey obviously dont know about my basketball cards and scrap metal collections.

ElJorge 60 days agoShhh, 'they' will want to cut you down.

kereru20 61 days agoI'm so happy for them because people need to be obscenely rich....... and we all know life is fair and ifyou only get massive amounts of money by earning it through honesty and hard work.

That's why nurses and teachers and caregivers are so undervalued in our society........they don't workhard enough and poor career decisions.

cspace 61 days agoIf indeed you give that much attention to material wealth then of course it will seem unfair andcompletely out of balance. Perhaps your comment says just as much about you as it doesabout the rich.

Danmansonman 61 days agoIf you built a successful business and it turned into a multi-million dollar company, you likelywouldn't give it all away and live like the rest of us. And other jealous people will talk about youthe way you talk about the rich listers. It's always different when you're actually wearing theshoes.

GRB13 61 days agoThe majority of nurses and teachers work in the government system so that should give you aninsight into why they are paid what they are.

cspace 60 days agoAs difficult as it might be for many nurses and teachers don't do what they do for themoney, they do it because that's what they do, they simply must. They could go dosomething else if it was simply about the cash but let's be grateful they don't.

HorseyPip 60 days agoAs a nurse Kereru, I think I am doing pretty well. Yes I possibly could have done something thatpays better, but I am comfortably off because I made good decisions and did well out of my firstproperty purchase which I bought because I was good with money and saved well. I am notrich but I am very comfortable. Some of my fellow students arent because they chose to dodifferent things once we graduated. There is a degree of personal responsibility involved, ifpeople do well and accumulate wealth then good on them I say. Trademe started becauseSam Morgan needed a heater.....

barry35 61 days ago"Estimated net worth" suggests that some bankers have been giving out secrets as to how much theyrich listers owe, otherwise how could the compilers calculate the net?

And is any allowance made for contingent liabilities, e.g. guarantees etc.

It seems that privacy and secrecy are abandoned when the news makers have a story they want to tell.

Anyway, there are some good guys among them- plus some not so good.

ClunkingFist 60 days agoAnyone can investigate and follow a lot the trail of who owns what company, and if the companyis listed, multiple the share price by the number of shares held = minimum net worth. I've justhad a nosy at Xero on the Companies Office website. True, perhaps Rod (Kenneth?) Drury borrowed some money to pay for some of the shares heowns. But at the end of the day, no one is claiming these lists are exact to the nearest milliondollars.

Stan 61 days agoSo?

Danmansonman 61 days agoThe poor get poorer for the same reason they are poor in the first place. Bad or no moneyhandling skills, and no motivation to find a way to make more money. Usually inherited fromtheir parents. Many wealthy people were horribly poor, go read all the stories and get somemotivation out of it. The richest man in Russia is a good story.

ClunkingFist 60 days agoA bit harsh, there are many who suffered a health problem, lost their job, then losttheir home. Or those with a sick or disabled child, having to try and provide 24hr carewhile trying to hold down a job to pay the bills.

Not all the poor are feckless. Having said that, we all know some who are.

I.Am.Kiwi85 61 days agoI don't mind that people are wealthy due to hard work and a bit of financial genius. What gets me is whensomeone comes into my workplace and they can't afford their $5 prescription. Then straight after thatsomeone who drives a BMW comes in and pays $5 for their prescription. Fine that some people havelots of money and some have very little, but certain expenses should be means based surely

Jeko 61 days agoThe more you earn the more tax you pay (in theory anyway). Should I also pay more for mygoods and services, which is then more GST... why would anyone bother trying to work hardand get ahead?

I.Am.Kiwi85 60 days agotax is not an expense, its tax. when taxes are paid it is no longer my money and it isnot yours. It belongs to the state. What billionaire is going to complain about paying$15.00 for a prescription? Do you get my drift. If the govt made things likeprescriptions an income based expense like they used to ($15.00 used to be thecharge for a standard single prescription item, or $3.00 if you had a communityservices card) then the govt would have more money to spend on advanced drugtherapies, research for new drugs, grant medication subsidies to patients with rareconditions who require expensive treatments etc etc etc. People who drive BMW'scan afford to pay for medication at a lesser subsidised rate, and why should it botherthem to do so?.

Alex 60 days agoPeople who earn more, still earn more nett salary. No one is ever worse off byearning more money than another person

John Smith2nd 60 days agothe point being made was swiftly evade by yourself....or did it duck around behind youwhilst not watching?

aNZer 61 days agoThe guy "Driving the BMW" IS paying for the rest of his prescription AS WELL AS covering theactual prescription price for those who can barely afford it, through taxes. Why should the guy"driving the BMW" pay even more again?

I.Am.Kiwi85 60 days agoNo brainer, its simply because he can, and it would make no difference to his qualityof life or financial burdens whatsoever I can guarantee you. As i commented toanother person, what billionaire or driver of a BMW would have an issue paying$15.00 for a prescription, and letting the little guy with humble earnings only pay$5.00?? Lol, the guy driving the BMW is actually evading tax because he knows toomany loopholes. Thats why he can afford the Beemer in the first place.

Stan 60 days agoIsn't that why we have a % tax rate?, the rich DO pay more. a LOT more for govt services.

Also pay LOTS more in rates on their expensive houses.

Or are you proposing some sort of complicated price policy in shops whereby you have toshow your "net worth" at the checkout and the price gets adjusted accordingly?

John Smith2nd 60 days agomisnomer- one does not pay more on 'expensive house' one pays more for theservices provided by council to higher value areas. That's why they are higher value. All rates payer pay based on services and improvements. Higher value areas havehigher standards of roading & maintenance. Lower socioeconomic areas have loweroverall standards. One doesn't simply pay more because of the GV or RV. You couldown the worst house in the best street and your rating equation is the same as thebest house in the best street, and the same by reverse. Location in district plans is what establishes rates equations not dollar values.

Stan 60 days ago@john you are wrong.

A person with a $1m house in South Auckland will pay the same as someone with a$1m house in ponsonby. Yes of course your gv is used to calculate rates it works outwhere your property value sits in conjunction to others. ! 2 houses in the same streetwill pay different rates according to their GV.

What on earth are you on about?

John Smith2nd 60 days agocan we move away from using the car someone drives as some measure of worth?

could just as easily be a low rent model ex Japan that's worth $5000.

I drive most days a 1996 Mitsi Ute.... I have no problems paying for my prescriptions, nor is myute owned mostly by the bank or a company car. I just chose not to make a stupid valuestatement based on 4 wheels that depreciates.

ClunkingFist 60 days agoI.am, that's why we should seriously consider a citizen salary (like National Super for everyoneover, say 20). It would help with the little things, then one's wages are the icing on the cake.

Average as 61 days agoImagine what we have paid in tax cuts to everyone earning over 100k a year. Those deficits that wereblamed on lower tax takes.... Makes one cringe for the country.

HOOF_HEARTED 60 days agoImagine what we have paid in working for families and all the other benefits to supplementpeople's wages who effectively pay no tax at all, our deficits would be alot lower....Makes onecringe for the country.

memyselfandi 61 days agoAbout 360 million a year in interest if he banked his wealth but that's probably a terrible ROI.

No one ever 61 days ago10billion!

Average as 61 days agoEnough to trickle down

Alistair McBride 61 days agoIt is quite clear that this list points out that the trickle down is a myth. Theaccumulation and accrual of wealth is carefully controlled so that none escapesdownwards. Wealth is also about power and control. Ensuring wealth stays lockedup maintains power and privilege. The politics of envy is designed to suggest toespecially the middle and aspiring classes that they too might get into the sameposition. The poor have no time for envy because they are too busy struggling tomake do with less and less as the rich suck wealth out of the economy.

christokiwi 61 days agoHaha the magical invisible trickle

Stan 61 days ago@alistar, so does it trickle up then?

Rod Drury has created an entire industry, employs hundreds of people globally..

Is that not trickle down enough for you?.

Actually the only myth about trickle down economics is that its not a myth. Yes theloony left try and write articles about it saying it doesn't work, and people like you leapon them.

But facts are facts, the rich create the jobs, create the revenue, and pay the taxes thatkeep this country going. FACT.

John Smith2nd 60 days agofinal word belongs to Stan- its looney left , why bother arguing further......

TravisPiwakawaka 61 days agoevery person has their own "enough". I have mine, and Im bloody happy. PS I am no wherenear on the rich list!

ClunkingFist 60 days agoI could triple what I have now, and it still won't be "enough". But by the time I retire, Ihope to be almost there: a paid-for house, plus nearly $1M (in today's money) insavings (I may have to downsize the house and move out of the city to get to $1M, butthat's fine). I'd love a lot more, as I'd love to travel where the whim takes me. But withwhat I have, I'll manage a trip or two each year, maybe more if I'm prepared to eat apacked-lunch occassionally, rather than dine on Parisian restaurants on EVRY day ofthat trip...

shuckah 61 days agoGood job all on the rich list an sure they have gone without in their early days and worked hard andSMART with good educations. We in NZ need these types of people to move the economy forwards.Theyalso EMPLOY lots of people who otherwise may not have a job and therefore little income .They oftencontribute with NO FANFARE to charities. So again salute these people ....!!!!

Nola Smot 61 days agoThey work smarter and take more risks.

Stan 61 days agoWork smarter.

NRH 61 days agoIn my opinion no amount of work justifies the huge wealth held by some, while many struggleto afford the basic necessities. Once you have money it is easy to make a lot more money. Itdoes not mean that you're working harder than everyone else. The system is unconscionable.

Stan 61 days agoWell, it actually does.. if you make it, you can keep it..

Some would say you are obscenely rich, there are street kids in Africa who would seeyou as massively wealthy,

its all about perspective;

GRB13 61 days agoIf a create a company and build it into a massive corporation and it is worth 100billion then it justifies it. Its about working smarter not harder more people need tolearn that.

MotSafety 61 days agoNothing wrong with getting ahead but at what point do you give others a leg up?

GRB13 61 days agoHow do you know they haven't. I know a while back Harts daughter's full time job was givingmoney to charities and other organisations.

Leonhart Hunt 61 days agoif only some of us had money to give to charities, a growth of 7.3% while medianincome growth was 1%, Um we have a problem with our Tax laws, it would not beunusual for a 3 - 4% diffrent but a 6.4% difference it's a huge problem

Nola Smot 61 days agoDefine "leg up".

ElJorge 60 days ago'hand out'

Stan 61 days agoRod Drury, has created an entire industry, and I also know him and others invest lots into smallbusinesses and start-ups, often loosing lots of it.

HOOF_HEARTED 60 days agoWhy do they need to give others a leg up, why don't the others give themselves a leg up.

StevenL 61 days agoPhew, for a minute there I thought we were all struggling. But no, just the lazy masses. Good to seethose doing all the hard work and producing the necessities of life are still making an honest living andin some cases even getting ahead.

Anon-77 61 days agoWhy lazy? Do you honestly think that these guys work harder then everyone else? Or is thebasis of your argument rooted in the fact that they are perceived to have worked smarter?

NRH 61 days agoIt's called sarcasm.

Stan 61 days agoWell they have worked smarter, cant deny that. If money was the goal, they did abetter job that you,

Anon-77 60 days agoStan - for sure, they did work smarter; for the time being. Things will change. I'll makesure of it.

Cryptochid 61 days agoGood on him!! He works hard & gets the rewards. Success is something that is earned by paying dues& working hard. Good job & congratulations for being successful!!

ZachariahS 61 days agoAll that wealth has to come from somewhere. For the rich to gain it someone has to lose it. Not sayingthat this is anyone's fault just saying for the rich to get richer some people gotta get poorer. At somepoint you have to ask 'is that enough money I've concentrated?' I'd argue if you've got a $100 million youdon't need any more money so why keep concentrating it?

Kallouskiwi 61 days agoUmmm it doesn't work like that.People don't start off with the same amount of money when they are born.NZs quality of living has probably increased in the last 5 years so everyone is getting"wealthier". Leonhart Hunt 61 days agoNZ quality of living has decreased by 4% for middle and 7% for lower see the equalitystudy published recently.

Mikex 61 days agoThat is typical left wing logic ie. A little pie and it must be divided up into equal slices for all. These people make the pie bigger so we can all share in bigger slices but not necessarily ofequal size.

NRH 61 days agoWell they make their piece of pie bigger. I'm not convinced anyone else's is gettingbigger.

Blairadams 61 days agoCommerce is not a zero sum game. If I sell you something and I make a profit and you getsomething you want then we are both happy. If I sell enough I may get to be a rich lister. Noone needs to lose for me to make a profit. Does your employer lose when he/she pays yourwages? Why is it any different for someone in business.

gregmilnenz 61 days agoThey didn't steal the money. When you get money do you make someone else poorer?Someone felt you provided something of value and paid you for it - same principle here dude.

Danmansonman 61 days agoSo your business has made enough and now you should lower prices and run at cost? Thebetter idea would be to keep making profit then you've got more to donate to good causes. Agood cause is not giving money to the poor either. They already proved they can't handlemoney. Money leaves the poor and gets hoarded by the rich because the rich own the supplychains that the poor blow all their money on. Stop blowing all the money and things will getbetter for them. Have a vege garden or something ditch the sky tv and bad habits. Badspending habits is mostly to blame. Everyone knows it, but it's apparently it's discrimination toactually say it.

Leonhart Hunt 60 days agogood in theory sadly not in practice, the additional money you talk about are mostlynot donated to charities or nonprofits, it is used for expansion or investment or simplyspent on multi-million dollar properties or accountants to avoid tax, while theiremployees struggle everyday.

Im not saying capitalism is bad, I do object to the 7.4% wage increase of Uppermanagement compared to the 1% for middle/low, the only way to help fix this is aliving wage reform.

how many charities actually do little/no good, how many have been outed for paying"directors" usually family or relations huge salaries to avoid Tax or have a fleet ofcompany cars that run on "donations"

its a dog eat dog world out there and sadly you don't even get to be a dog.

ClunkingFist 60 days agoLeonhart says "It is used for expansion or investment." So like, they employ even more people and build (or rather, employ builders) to buildmore factories? That's just so EVIL. lolz And no money is HOARDED: it is SPENT to achieve the expansion of which youspeak. The only people who hoard are people like me who puts a bit of my money intoa savings account.

she-ra 61 days agoI wonder what it would feel like having that amount of money. I feel rich having $1000.

Anon-77 61 days agoYou would be wrong... You don't recall when Sam Morgan stated that he didn't pay taxone year, even though her 'netted' over 4 mil. Wake up.

cspace 61 days agoHaha, you've got to be joking, the rich don't have to pay taxes, they have endless waysof avoiding tax. It's the poor who pay the taxes because they have no options.

Stan 61 days agoThe rich pay the most tax in NZ, its FACT, ! as in actual FACT compared to loony leftranting, and politics of envy.

igb 60 days agoStan's your "facts" are only right if you are talking about high income earners who areemployed and pay tax based on top tax brackets and classing them as the "rich".

The truly rich who make their money from investments and owning companies etcand make up this list are not paying the most tax.

Just because others have a different view to your, dosen't make the loony.

Alex 61 days agoWhen Graeme Hart owned CHH, jobs were shed

Ummm. 61 days agoBet he employees more than you per $ earned Alex.

Stan 61 days agoHow many jobs has Rod Drury created?, hundreds, and high paying jobs too.

We NEED people like this.

igb 60 days agoThe familiar job creator myth.

Consumers are the job creators, they demand the products when they have money intheir pockets to buy them. When the middle class erodes the consumers spendingpower erodes and the job creating power with it.

Alex 60 days agoUmmm... so you know how much I earn and how much works from Graeme Hart'ssubsidiary businesses earn

Bet you don't

Crackles 61 days agoWhere are the Woman? The non-whites? Probably not in there 'cause they're just lazy. It's White peoplefor the win! Yayyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!

John Q Public 61 days agoGiven whites are not actively preventing non-whites from getting wealthy, your comment has amore truth to it than sarcasm

GRB13 61 days agoActually your question provides the answer. These people did not go on about how life wasunfair/racist what ever they just got out there and did it.

TravisPiwakawaka 61 days agoSome of our wealthiest entities are now Iwis. Ngai Tahu and Tainui are worth more than abillion each. I think that this is a good thing as they may be more inclined to invest for people, and for environment. I also think that Iwi wealth will grow more than individual company wealthbecause they make decisions for the long term future not short term shareholder return. Justsome thoughts (from a pakeha)

GRB13 61 days agoIwi trusts buy shares in companies just like any other investor they are shareholdersand are counting on "share holder return". As for iwi being some of our wealthiestentities they not even in the ball park probably not even in the car park. Comparing thegrowth of a trust to that of an individual company is pretty useless as some will blowthem out of the water Apple, Facebook, Microsoft etc. and the Trust will beat others.Trying to bring race into investment ideas is crazy as well.

JmannGod 61 days agogood for them and all their hard work and endeavor!

oh puleaase 61 days agoWho would have thought.

nzmalc 61 days agoNo one needs nine billion dollars. That's just ridiculous. Somethings wrong with the system when youcan have one man with that much wealth while hundreds of thousands are struggling in the samecountry.

Tellsitlikeitis 61 days agoBill gates fortune rose $8 billion US just last year.

TravisPiwakawaka 61 days agoyes and to date he has donated $28billion. He is also part of the giving pledge where128 billionaires have pledged to give away at least half their wealth to charity

JohnZ.Smith 61 days agoThat's their net worth - not the amount of cash they have in the bank to spend. Most of that istied up in the successful businesses that they run - businesses that give jobs to workers.

Ummm. 61 days agoStop complaining. The article said Graeme Hart started out as a tow truck driver. Pretty sureyou have the same, if not better opportunities than a tow truck driver.

GRB13 61 days agoPretty amazing story when you think about it is definitely something to be admired.

GRB13 61 days agoYou do actually realise that he does not have 9 billion in the bank most of the wealth is in iscompany the Rank Group.

BaddieJoneee 57 days agoNo one needs nine billion dollars? Will you tell that to beneficiaries or will I? To amass thatsort of figure you plan, you borrow and you get up early each morning. Are you starting to seewhere the differences are?

Average as 61 days agoThanks to Jk and Nationals governance our wealthy are getting ahead

Angelina 61 days agoBut not JK it seems. I wonder what he is doing wrong???????????

Average as 61 days agoMy kids will pay for his public financial failings, no worries there.

Average as 61 days agoCountry says there is almost 100 billion things lol!

GRB13 61 days agoIt is because he became Prime Minister that is why. If he had never become PrimeMinister he would more than likely be a lot richer.

arewethatstupid 61 days agoCan only imagine it is hidden elsewhere.....as probably investments in all teh largecorporates who will do exceptionally well from TPPA signing....

aNZer 61 days agoJK quit his job, knowing full well he was taking a massive pay cut because hethought he had enough money and wanted to do something positive for the country. Imight not have voted for him, but you have to respect that.

AndyW 61 days agoGraeme Hart - tow-truck driver to self-made billionaire - no silver spoon there, just hard graft.Good on him; unfortunately haters and left-wing nutters would have it so someone would notbe able to get into that position.

Average as 61 days agoMean tax cut aye!

GRB13 61 days agoWell said.

Ummm. 61 days agoAnd employing lots of other people to help them get ahead too.

Average as 61 days agoA shame the tax cuts were across the board and not targeted to individuals earning under100k, we could've made a difference.

Green overalls 61 days agoHow much tax do you contribute to the system or are you one of the benes!

HOOF_HEARTED 60 days agoA shame not everyone gets working for families too, it works both ways there bud, youcan't complain about tax cuts for a group of individuals who supplement your incomewith theirs.

Stan 60 days agoYou either want a percentage tax rate system or not.

Would you prefer a flat tax system whereby everybody pays the EXACT same Dollaramount per annum?

Harry Henderson 61 days agoI see that number 10 on the list only has 870, that means I only need 430 more to join them.... ohhh, waita minute, I've just been told that the m beside the number stands for millions, ouch. Still, doesn't changethe fact that I'm a multi-hundredaire... ohhh, wait a minute, I've just been told that the power bills arrived,so looks like I'm broke again.

jimmythegent 61 days agoHuh?

Gazza25 61 days agoHook us up Cuzz!!

Bazzle 61 days agoBut are they happy? Computer says YES

JohnZ.Smith 61 days agoBest quote I ever read "I've been poor and I've been rich. Believe you me, rich is better!"

BaddieJoneee 57 days agoMoney won't buy you happiness but crying inside a Mercedes Benz is better thancrying on a bicycle.

Spaceman 61 days agoAnd meanwile our next generation of childen are starving...

Nola Smot 61 days agoFeed them then.

GRB13 61 days agoBorn and bred in Africa trust me New Zealand children are not starving I have seen what a realstarving child looks like They are however eating a lot of unhealthy. food.

Average as 61 days agoThey're just saving to help pay off our mountain of debt

Stan 60 days agoHow? the poor take from the govt, they dont give, they are the reason we have toborrow for social welfare systems.

Not that im anti social welfare, but the facts are we HAD to borrow during the GFC astax revenue fell so much, not once during that time where benefits stopped.

Be grateful you live in this country

John Smith2nd 60 days agotax revenue fell Stan? really why? How did tax revenue manage to nose dive, yet thislist has names whose net worth increased by many many millions....

do you need a clue?

HOOF_HEARTED 60 days agoWhy aren't their parents feeding them?.

Thomas Smedley 61 days agohook us up!

Cheers Len 61 days agothat would make me the 4,500,099th, on the list & I can live with that.

PaciFier 61 days agoIf I wasn't here commenting I could be out there, making the list.

GRB13 61 days agoThen get out there and do it.

weiß Heer 61 days agoDam, I didn't quite make it.....maybe next year!

averagejoe 61 days agoHaha Bill Gates the richest man in the world..!!?? Does the name Rothschild ring a bell..Gates would belucky to be in the top 10...Smoke and mirrors...

dange 61 days agoRothschild is a family. And it's all tied up in trusts.

daholtruth 61 days agoabsolutely correct

GRB13 61 days agoI can quite safely say that is the last thing Bill Gates cares about.

Richardmack1 61 days agoGob smacked!!!!! Hart is a genious, from a towy to a billionaire what a brain, does he give any of hisfortunes to charity-----just asking

JohnZ.Smith 61 days agoHe does better - he runs companies that provide sustained income for thousands.

GRB13 61 days agoHe gives heaps to charity.

Alex 61 days agoHe buys companies, restructures them (as well as shedding jobs), and sells them off afterprofiting. That's what happened with CHH anyways

Stan 60 days agoHe buys companies that are run badly, hence he gets them cheap

ElJorge 60 days agoSo he should just keep it running at a loss to provide an income to a lazy unionisedworkforce?

Harry Henderson 61 days agoBut the real question that we have to ask is, are those people really that happy having all that money? The answer of course is yes, yes they are.

I'd really like to make it onto a list one day that isn't a court ordered one.

themouse 61 days agoWhy does anyone need that much money??

JohnZ.Smith 61 days agoThey don't "need" it - that's just the value of their investments. It's not cash in the bank.

Stan 60 days agoIts not about the money, stop be fixated on money Business is their sport.

whitemouse 1 61 days agoStarship and many, many Hospitals could do with a few $$$$$$$$$ from that lot.

ElJorge 60 days agoThey probably already get generous donations from this list.

ClunkingFist 60 days agoHart's daughter used to chair the Starship Trust. They do their bit...

How about we shift some funding from the effing flag commission to the hospitals.

Jimmy Russell 61 days agoFrom tow truck driver to billionaire. Entirely self made, yet cant help but feel that people will have a crackat him.

Avidcyclist 61 days agoWe that made my $700 dollars look bad...

The Rogue Pirate 61 days agoWell done to all those that have made the list. Nice to see success celebrated.

dooshgoosh 61 days agoNo one person should have that much money.

RaoulDingus 61 days agoAgreed. Give me half.

SamAdams 61 days agoWhy not?

BaddieJoneee 57 days agoPutin's got much more - and your attitude.

RicardoVonChung 61 days agoGood on them. I would never begrudge people for being successful.

Toner 61 days agoNext round of beersies is on these people

jimmythegent 61 days agoOriginal post.

SamAdams 61 days agoWaiting for the "rich get rich and the poor get poorer" comments. That stuff aside, we'll done everyone onthe list! Can't wait till I'm there.

JiFar 61 days agoyou won't be...statistically speaking you won't be. But enjoy the fantasy.

SamAdams 61 days agoWith that attitude, you'll never be on the rich list. Statistically a tow truck driver wouldnever make the list, a kid from a state house won't make the list. That's why only afool would live his life and set his goals based on statistics. I guess what I'm trying tosay is remember this conversation when you're reading the rich list in 20 years.

nomoregreed 61 days agoSome worked hard for it, some were lucky, some greedy and cunning .... but problem begins when theyuse the leverage of their capital to speculate with property and such and as a result ordinary workingpeople sit on huge mortgages or can't afford their own home at all....

ElJorge 60 days agoProbably should have thought twice about buying a property they can't afford

Dubinator 61 days agoMan I'd love to live the good life

Nola Smot 61 days agoThey work their buns off too.

JiFar 61 days agoHa! That's brilliant...millionaires and they work hard...really made my day.

rata 61 days agoThey are visionary! Hilarious.

RedInAndOut 61 days agoPlease adopt me....anyone (on this list)

LQWKEY 61 days agoMe -$13.25 in my account LOL!!! argh 1 day

Dutch Kiwi 61 days agoSo Mr Hart is worth $9billion. Seems rather pointless to have all that money or is he in love with it?

GRB13 61 days agoIf you want to keep the controlling stake in your company then no it is not pointless. Youobviously think it all just sits in the bank.

AlanFreeman 61 days agoviva la revolution. the 99% will eventually revolt.

Nola Smot 61 days agoThey are already revolting.

JonKiwi 61 days agoAbsolutely disgusting

JohnZ.Smith 61 days agoBattery charging is re- volting.

bruceybuoy 61 days ago1% of the worlds population is 70 million 1% of NZ is 40,000 people

GRB13 61 days agoNo they won't for 1 simple reason the 99% are not equal.

Stan 61 days agoThat 99% thing is so last year.

lerou 61 days agoCongratulations to all...........as long as you pay your fair share of tax!

JohnZ.Smith 61 days agoThat would be very debatable - I'm sure however that they pay what they're legally obliged to.

jimmythegent 61 days agoGraeme Hart would pay more tax in one year than most people would pay in their lifetime.

Average as 61 days agoLike your average Dairy farm paying as much tax as a Dole bludger.
