The Graduation Ceremony

Students participating in university graduation ceremonies join a rich tradition, which dates back to the 12th Century. The ceremony, presided over by the Chancellor, serves as the official conferral of awards obtained by students. Prior to the ceremony they are “graduands” – those eligible to graduate - but upon conferral they become graduates.

Academic dress is comprised of a gown, and depending on the level of award, a stole or hood and a trencher or bonnet. In line with British university graduation tradition, the Charles Darwin University Chancellor’s robes are embroidered with gold thread, while the Vice-Chancellor’s robes are embroidered with silver. The official regalia worn by members of the Academic Procession reflect the diversity of qualifications and universities represented - the hoods worn by graduating students identify them as a Charles Darwin University graduate in their chosen discipline.

The official conferral of awards takes place during the ceremony and is undertaken by the Chancellor. After the official conferral of awards, each student will be individually acknowledged and presented with their award. This public acknowledgement is a very important part of the ceremony - it gives the graduate an opportunity to be congratulated on their achievement and it also serves to validate the student’s graduate status.

The Chancellor’s Chair

The Chancellor’s chair was a gift to the University from the Australian National University in 2009, and was made by Mr Timothy Foster. Mr Foster is a professional furniture maker and teacher with over 30 years’ experience in industry, and divides his time between working for commission and teaching. The design of the chair was driven primarily by the importance of its ceremonial function and the desire to create a visually engaging chair, able to claim its place in the room and focus the attention of the congregation. The chair is made from Delinia timber, which is a species native to New Guinea, where it was sustainably sourced and certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. It was chosen for its rich colour, fine grain, stability and strength, and also its relevance in proximity to Darwin. The CDU Crest at the

top of the chair is hand-shaped and finished, and was produced in collaboration with gold and silversmith, Mr Shaun Booth.

The Vice-Chancellor’s and Deputy Chancellor’s chairs were made in 2011 by Mr Matt Davidson. Mr Davidson is a local furniture craftsman and builder whose work can be seen throughout Darwin, including the CDU Chancellery building and the Darwin Convention Centre. These chairs were designed to complement the Chancellor’s chair and are made from Silky Oak. This timber was chosen for its contrasting colour, although the figure and grain are very similar to the Chancellor’s chair.

The Seasons Fanfare

The Seasons Fanfare was commissioned by Charles Darwin University to coincide with its 25th Anniversary. Composed by Dr Leif Sundstrup, the work celebrates both the diverse Territory seasons and the celebration of the university ritual with understated transformations representing the Darwinian principals of life. Although a modern work in contraction, the fanfare is both accessible and memorable, framing the academic environment and lasting tradition of the Charles Darwin University.

The Fanfare represents both the antiquity and grandeur of university life, based on three recurring and transforming themes: The University, The Dignitaries, and The Seasons. Amongst the developing musical subjects throughout the fanfare can be heard distinct representations of the seasons including ‘the build up’ with thunder storms, slow moving breezes of the tranquil dry, and a hint of the Darwin’s Finches (Galápagos finches) which played an important part in his theories.

The work is written in a traditionally classical style to reflect the long and important history of the Charles Darwin University and its maturation over the past twenty-five years.

Graeme ArmstrongThesis Title: Regeneration strategies of Triodia spp. in response to fire in the Kimberley, Western Australia

This thesis investigates the processes which structure plant communities and enable species coexistence. Stochastic niche theory has been argued as the most likely process to explain plant community structure, with the recognition that sympatric species have differential regeneration success after a disturbance over both time and space. To investigate this proposition I collected ecological and phenological data on eight sympatric Triodia spp., in the Kimberley of WA, to determine and compare their regeneration responses to fire. The study demonstrated that Triodia spp. in this community can be classified into different regeneration functional groups, most species are habitat generalists and that species from different functional groups have coexisted since at least the late Pleistocene. Considered together these results indicate that disturbance by fire facilitates the coexistence of these species and that stochastic niche theory best describes the processes operating in this community.

Bui Dac ThuyetThesis Title: Environmental Impacts of Coastal Shrimp Farming in North Vietnam

This study investigated environmental impacts of coastal shrimp farming in North Vietnam. Satellite images were used to detect land cover/land use change at two study sites (Ha Long and Mong Cai) between 1999 and 2008. The results demonstrated that mangrove areas reduced by an estimated 2,071.9 ha while shrimp farming areas increased by 2,898.4 ha over the same period; and that shrimp farming was the main reason for mangrove loss in Mong Cai. Spatial variation of water and sediment quality was found, with high levels of nutrient and nutrient-related parameters at channels/creeks adjacent to shrimp farms. These levels declined in the same creeks 2.3 km away from the effluent discharge points. Water quality was found to vary temporally, with elevated nutrient levels after shrimp crops. From the findings, strategies for improving the existing management regime to promote sustainable management of coastal shrimp farming are discussed.

Gretchen Marie EnnisThesis Title: Neighbourhood Networking: A Critical Social Work Approach to ‘Creating Community’ in a Culturally Diverse Setting

This study demonstrates the importance of creating and strengthening supportive social networks in order to ‘create community’ in culturally diverse places. It discusses the way in which communities can be considered complex and dynamic networks made up of connections between people, groups and organisations. From this ‘networking’ perspective the study explores the development, processes and outcomes of a grass roots community project in suburban Darwin. This project, named ‘Ludmilla Neighbourhood Connections’, aimed to increase cross-cultural connections and enhance a sense of community in the local area. It highlights the strengths and challenges of the project and the application of the networking perspective. The study illustrates that social network analysis can be integrated into community work projects both as an effective tool to enhance community work practice, and as a meaningful method of evaluating community work outcomes.

Wajahat MahmoodThesis Title: Characterisation of aspartic protease activity from the scabies mite Sarcoptes scabiei

Scabies is an infectious disease of the skin, caused by infestation with the scabies mite Sarcoptes scabiei. It is a disease of global significance with millions of people affected worldwide. This study investigated a Sarcoptes scabiei aspartic protease as a novel drug target for the treatment of scabies. The role of the protease in the life cycle and host specificity of the scabies mite was investigated and the physiological and physiochemical properties of the protease were characterised. The scabies mite aspartic protease was shown to likely have an essential role in the invasion and digestion of host tissue, and a distinct specificity which could potentially be exploited in the development of a novel therapeutic agent. A new treatment option for scabies could have positive impact on the health status of disadvantaged populations living in scabies endemic communities globally.

Robyn MarshThesis Title: Culture-independent analysis of the bacteriology associated with acute otitis media in Indigenous Australian children

Otitis media is endemic in many remote Indigenous communities. In this population, otitis media develops in the first weeks of life and commonly progresses to chronic suppurative disease. Hearing loss from chronic otitis media adversely affects language development and educational outcomes, which subsequently contributes to social disadvantage in adulthood. This thesis presents a culture-independent analysis of acute otitis media (AOM) bacteriology in Indigenous children. The study used qPCR to demonstrate a role for the atypical bacteria Alloiococcus otitidis as a secondary middle ear pathogen. T-RFLP analyses demonstrated significant differences between nasopharyngeal and ear discharge bacterial communities in Indigenous children with AOM with perforation. Further, data from a 16S rRNA gene microarray analysis of ear discharge suggest that changes in bacterial community structure and increases in bacterial richness may contribute to clinical progression to chronic suppurative otitis media. These findings contribute to understanding of otitis media pathogenesis in this high-risk population.

Jennifer Helen RobinsonThesis Title: School trust: Situated to maximise school improvement. A case study of a primary school

This study sought to identify how students, parents and teachers in a school environment understand trust; and to identify what supports and what undermines trust at the micro and macro levels. The significance is that this information can be used to foster greater trust, and greater trustworthiness within the school environment, which is needed at this time of declining trust of and within public schools. The findings directly inform school practice and particularly school improvement. Ethnographic techniques and a number of qualitative methods within a constructivist theoretical frame are used in the study design. Sixty semi-structured interviews were collected over a two year period from the single case study site. Three phases of analyses - Thematic Analysis, Grounded Theory and Membership Categorisation Analysis - resulted in three tentative theories: Situated trust, Role trust, and School trust.

Jai SleemanThesis Title: The influence of biophysical processes on distributions of the whale shark Rhincodon typus (Smith 1828), at Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia.

Using satellite technology, GIS and modelling, this thesis identifies spatial / temporal distributions of whale sharks in the north east Indian Ocean, biophysical variables influencing distributions and how these compare with other resident marine megafauna with different trophic/metabolic strategies. Broad patterns in historical seasonal whale shark sightings at Ningaloo Reef Western Australia are explained by biophysical variables: Southern Oscillation Index and wind shear, whereby abundance increased in La Nina years. Localised/short- term distribution patterns of krill feeders (whale sharks, minke whales, manta rays) are linked to depth, while higher-order trophic groups of marine megafauna are influenced by increased temperatures. Ocean-wide whale shark movement patterns are explained by active locomotion rather than passive drifting in geostrophic surface currents. Warm temperatures and high dissolved oxygen levels influenced whale shark diving and might relate to poikilothermic physiological limitations. Different biophysical variables influence whale shark distributions across space and time.

Robyn SmithThesis Title: Arcadian Populism: the Country Liberal Party and Self-Government in the Northern Territory

This thesis explores the theory of Arcadianism and combines it with the practice of populism, applying both to the Country Liberal Party and its application of policy following self-government in the Northern Territory with particular emphasis on, but not limited to, land and development. The thesis introduces two further elements: invention of tradition and character or ‘imagined community’; and race, which round out the proposition that there were four elements to the CLP’s successful and enduring reign of governance in the Northern Territory. As a matter of political history, the thesis argues that CLP policies resulted in marginalisation and exclusion of the Aboriginal community from the rest of the Northern Territory population, the latter exclusively identified as ‘Territorian’ - and that this was a deliberate and direct result of the CLP’s entrenched opposition to the Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act (Cth).

Thomas SnellingThesis Title: The effect of rotavirus vaccination on hospitalisations for gastroenteritis in the Northern Territory of Australia

Assessing the effectiveness of vaccines under real-world conditions is crucial. Unfortunately this can be affected by an inherent risk from bias outside of controlled clinical trial settings. A novel adaptation of the case-cohort method was developed and applied to measure the effectiveness of rotavirus vaccination in the Northern Territory, taking into account baseline differences between hospitalised and non-hospitalised children. The study assessed the relationship between vaccination and the subsequent risk of severe gastroenteritis among a prospective cohort of children admitted with respiratory illness. This was augmented with additional data from children admitted with gastroenteritis only. Young infants were found to be significantly protected against severe gastroenteritis if vaccinated. Even so, hospitalisation due to infection with rotavirus and other enteric pathogens, often in combination, frequently occurred among both vaccinated and unvaccinated Indigenous children. Infecting genotype, age, and co-infection with non-rotavirus pathogens, all appear to influence vaccine effectiveness.

Conrad Wayne SpeedThesis Title: Behavioural and trophic ecology of reef sharks at Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia

This study observed the long-term movements, environmental associations, and trophic role of reef sharks at Ningaloo Reef. To answer questions relating to spatial and temporal movement patterns, the behaviour of four species was monitored using visual censuses, acoustic monitoring, and stable isotope analysis. All species used inshore areas with zone established reserves. Generally shark movements were more affected by water temperature than other variables, suggesting some form of behavioural thermoregulation. Estimated trophic levels for study species were comparable to previous estimates, and suggest a dependency on coastal (not pelagic) food webs. Adults had larger home ranges than juveniles, and activity was greatest for adults outside of the sanctuary zone. Some adults also made long-distance movements outside of reserved areas (137 km) exposing them to interactions with fisheries. Management of reef sharks should incorporate the use of marine-park zoning with other measures, such as bag limits and size restrictions.

Andrew James TaylorThesis Title: Investigations of changing Indigenous migration practices for the Northern Territory of Australia: theoretical and policy implications

This thesis investigates current and anticipated migration practices for Indigenous people in the Northern Territory of Australia. In contrast to existing scholarly knowledge about the relationship of residential migration to Indigenous demographic futures, it argues we should anticipate bifurcations from past flows and patterns. Drawing on parallel experiences in comparable developed nations, a series of investigative studies demonstrate the force of migration for substantially changing population distributions and compositions for small, isolated and dispersed Indigenous populations like those of the Northern Territory. While policy approaches to Indigenous affairs continue to portray remote communities as the ‘rightful’ places for Indigenous people, this thesis argues for more encompassing theories, a broadening of the research agenda, a revision of demographic discourse, and a shift in policy paradigms. The thesis is a call for policy makers to stay abreast of developments proposed by the results it presents in order to plan for and deal with social, demographic and economic consequences anticipated. In doing so, policy ‘blind spots’ might be avoided so that unintended consequences and misguided institutional scopes are not permitted to undermine continuing attempts to provide Indigenous Australians with opportunities for generating and enjoying lives of relative abundance which are afforded to most Australians.
