New appliance for Historic VillageToowoomba Fire Brigade Museum, which is part of the Highfields Pioneer Village, were recently presented with a fire appliance from QFES. Assistant Commissioner Steve Smith presented Lester Naumann (President of the Toowoomba Fire Brigade Museum) with the keys to the firepac appliance which used to be in service at the Anzac Avenue Station.

The many appliances at the museum have previously serviced numerous stations over a period of time.

The committee is raising money to build another shed to house all their appliances and keep them under cover.

The members meet at the Historical Village the first Friday of each month and Retired Firefighters are most welcome. If you’d like to go, contact Lester Naumann on 0438 769 891.

If you would like to go the Historic Village for a look around, there is much to see. Other attractions include an Ambulance Museum, Qld Energy Museum, authentic old buildings, a miniature steam train and you can treat yourself to damper and tea. Highfields Pioneer Village is open from 10am to 4pm daily. For more information, go towww.highfieldspioneervillage.com.au

CORRECTIONIn the last edition of the Afterburners, this photograph’s caption was incorrect. We said it was Des Lacey with Denise Redfern. It is, in fact, Naco Lester. Our apologies.

This little koala was rescued by crew attending a fire at Rosenthal Heights in January. QFES were on the scene at the bushfire which closed the New England Highway in both directions. Power was disconnected in the local area as well.

Aqueous Film Forming Foams

wHAT IS AFFF?Aqueous Film Forming Foams were purchased by QFES pre-2003 and ideally suited to extinguish flammable liquids and concentrates.

Historically, many of these foams include fluorinated surfactants, in particular PerFluoro-Octanoic Acid (PFOA)

and Per Fluoro-Octane Sulfonate (PFOS). They are part of a broader group of chemicals called PerFluorinated Chemicals or PFCs.

PFOA is classified as a Class 2B carcinogen, which means it is possibly carcinogenic based on limited evidence. PFOS is classified as a persistent organic pollutant, meaning it does not breakdown readily in the environment.

PFCs have many applications from non-stick cookware to surface coatings, including within concrete, and water repellent coatings in clothing.

ExPOSUREPeople are mainly exposed to PFCs via ingestion of food and water through the food chain and, as a result, all people have small amounts of PFOA and PFOS in their body.

A firefighter could be exposed to PFCs via their respiratory system, especially at incidents. They could also be exposed via the skin through handling concentrated foams at stations or on an appliance and may have contacted finished foam during its application and as they cleaned, checked, or serviced vehicles.

You may recall reading the articles on page 7 in previous editions of the Afterburners. Allan Young has asked for them to be re-run as they contain important information and sources for getting the right help.

Above information submitted by Queensland Fire and Emergency Services in February 2018.

PROACTIVE MANAgEMENT OF AFFFQFES has taken a strong lead, nationally and internationally, in its management of AFFF.

During 2016 QFES tested soil and in-ground water tanks at

Fire and Rescue Stations as well as the Queensland Combined Emergency Services Academy (QCESA) at Whyte Island.

The test results and additional information can be reviewed at the QFES website listed below.

QFES then instigated a program to manage in-ground water tanks at stations to ensure any contaminated materials were disposed of appropriately.

HEALTH TESTINgAn associated health program is also available and includes a free consultation with an independent health practitioner and associated blood screening, if desired, for staff and volunteers, past or present, who may have come into contact with foams.

While this screening does not provide definitive guidance about an individual’s health, it will provide a baseline for individuals and the workforce for future reference as further research is conducted on the health and environmental impacts of AFFF.

Any retired firefighters, paid or volunteer, with health or blood test related inquiries, can email QFES Workplace Health and Safety at: [email protected]

Firefighting is dangerous business. Beyond the obvious risks, exposure to combustion by-products of burning materials – the kind of exposure that comes with the job – can have serious health effects in the long term, with lung and neurological injuries having been linked to exposure.

Recent changes to legislation governing Queenslanders’ entitlements to workers’ compensation have made it easier for firefighters, including retired firefighters, to access compensation.

These changes mean that if a firefighter, either current or retired, suffers from a certain disease it is presumed that the injury is work related. As a result, firefighters who meet years of service requirement and are diagnosed on or after 15 July 2015 will find it much easier to access compensation for specified diseases.

When a disease is deemed or determined to be work-related, workers’ compensation (including lump sum compensation) is payable for medical expenses associated with treating

the disease and permanent impairment, or loss of life expectancy, caused by the disease. While compensation can’t undo the damage, it can help provide access to medical treatment and support that can make a significant difference to your quality of life.

Retired fire fighters diagnosed with a condition caused by exposure to hazardous materials, or with one of the specified diseases listed in the following table, should obtain urgent legal advice in relation to their potential compensation entitlements.

Hall Payne Lawyers represent members of the Retired Firefighters Association of Queensland and have advised and acted for retired firefighters diagnosed with disease after retirement. We work with the union to get you the compensation you deserve, and have the experience and knowledge relevant to firefighting to expertly assist anyone seeking compensation.

If you are diagnosed with one of the specified diseases, contact the RFFAQ for a referral, or contact us on 1800 659 114.

A cuppa, a chat and a medalA cup of tea after church with the Priest and the local Member, Jim Madden, led to Tom Sudgen receiving the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal (known today as the National Service Medal), for the second time.

This cup of tea must have started quite a chin wag. It led to Tom talking about his time as an auxiliary firefighter. Stories were shared, photos were shown. It was while he was showing his guests his medal that his wife, Betty, pointed out that Tom’s surname had been spelt incorrectly on the medal rim.

Tom was never fussed about this, saying, “With a name like mine, you always get wrong spellings.”

A few months after this cup of tea, Tom received a phone call. He was to be presented with a new medal, freshly cast in England, with his name spelt correctly.

Tom’s first presentation was in the 1980s after 26 years of service. Tom was presented with his new medal late in 2017. He found the day very moving and was reminded of his days as a firefighter.

In the 1960s, you had to be 21 years old to join the brigade and there was little in the way of support. The firefighters operated out of a small shed at the back of the blacksmith’s shop. They used a trailer with a water tank and an auxiliary pump on it. No fire truck. In the event of a fire, the first person to turn up with a towbar was the one who took the trailer to the fire. ‘Equipment’ consisted of a hat (initially a cork one, then later the moulded plastic style, similar to today’s hats), and a belt. On the belt was a spanner to tighten the hydrant and a hatchet. They wore overalls that they bought themselves. They received a cap, shirt and trousers for ‘special occasions’.

In 1962 the mains water was turned on in Rosewood, which made a huge difference to how they operated.

Hydrants were installed throughout the town. Before this, they had to source water from home tanks, wells or underground tanks while they waited for support from an Ipswich truck, which was sent every time an alarm went off. If the fire was outside of town, they would drag water from dams, creeks or wells.

One day, while hurrying down the road to a fire, Tom remembers “mentioning to the driver that we were moving pretty quick and asked if the tank was filled as the car seemed to be pulling it real easily.” He can now laugh about the empty tank they took to the fire, but at the time it wasn’t very funny.

Tom recalls fighting fires with knapsacks and bush beaters. When he first started he was the ‘knapsack boy’.Of the metal knapsack of water he said, “It was heavy when full and a real pig of a thing if it got caught getting through a fence.”

When remembering the fire at Ruhno’s General Store, Tom shuddered. “There was a space of maybe two foot between it and the butcher’s next door and I was down in that space fighting the fire when the water got turned off.”

“I can remember that my arms and legs were all blistered after that fire.”

Tom said he worked under two great bosses, Bob Parkes and Bob Brown, and made great friends during his firefighting years.

Of the medal presentation Tom says, “They made me feel very special and now that I do have the medal with my correct name I am really pleased, although I would never have done anything about it myself.”

Wearing their supplied dress uniforms, Len Boughen, Arthur Johnston, Bob Brown and Tom Sudgen connecting the standpipe to the hydrant in 1962 when the mains water was turned on in Rosewood. Below: Tom and his wife Betty with family at the medal presentation.

Out and About: RFFAQ Christmas Lunch

We returned to TAFE Queensland’s College of Tourism and Hospitality (COTA) at South Bank for our Christmas lunch late last year.

The food service was prompt and our traditional Christmas dinner was very tasty and also generous in size. We had a prawn cocktail entree before our main meal of sliced roast turkey and baked ham with roasted vegetables and greens. Dessert was, as Christmas dictates, plum pudding and custard.

COTA is a great, central location. Using public transport to get there is really straightforward, with the South Bank stop for trains and buses close by.

Many members attended which was great to see. All seemed to enjoy the occasion and left stuffed fuller than a Christmas stocking.

Our Christmas Lunch is always advertised in the Spring Edition of the Afterburners (September). Bookings are essential.

The Firefighters PrayerWhen I am called to duty God, wherever flames may rage, give me

the strength to save some life, whatever be its age.

Help me embrace a little child, before it’s too late, or save an older person, from the horror of that fate.

Enable me to be alert, and to hear the weakest shout, and quickly and efficiently, to put the fire out.

I want to fill my calling, and to give the best in me, to guard my every neighbour and protect his property.

And if according to my fate, I am to lose my life, please bless with your protecting hand, my children and my wife.

Allan was a member of the MFB from 1958 until

his retirement in 1997

I hope all had a lovely Christmas and New Year and as I have had with family and friends .

Your Association has been busy through the holiday season. We managed to get the Christmas edition out before Christmas. Thank you to all who helped .

Also, the survey from Beyond Blue: we were asked to send it from them as a way of finding out how retired firefighters were going with any health issues. Thank you to those who sent them back. It helps Beyond Blue to get this information.

We have accepted quite a few new members: Ken O’Donnell, Don Farley, John Hay, Frank Garland, Greg Reynolds ,Rod Madden ,Peter Theodore. We welcome you all to our Association and hope to see you at some of our functions and join our time of fellowship.

The Christmas luncheon went well as we returned to the TAFE South Brisbane. Food was good and a good day was had by all.

We have some members who need to pay their fees. Annual Membership fees are due in January. It is $15.00 per year and it falls due in January.

We had a meeting with QFES before Christmas to give a report on how we are going and if they can help us with any of our needs at the moment.

I hope all received their wallets by now. It was our way of giving some thing to our members and so far the membership response has been positive.

Enough from me. Thank you for your ongoing support and I look forward to catching up with you through the coming year.
