Staff Members at Fruithurst Elementary School indulged in a week long celebration for Staff Appreciation Week. There were small prizes for the teachers each day and a drawing for a big gift each day that included patio chairs, hanging baskets, gift cards to Los Mex and Fuji, and a certificate for a day off. Wednesday was ‘Cinco de Mayo’ so they celebrated with catered Mexican food from Los Mex and a pinata filled with teacher supplies. Friday was the biggest day because the “red carpet” was rolled out! The workroom was turned into a spa where staff members could go during their planning times to have their nails painted, make-up done, and an “up do” for a night out on the town. The staff members all looked stunning and thanked the FES PTO for their special week.

Gadsden State Community College recently hosted the welding portion of the Ala-bama SkillsUSA Competition which included students from community colleges across the state. During the competition students were tested on various aspects of welding through written exams to measure their knowledge of welding principles and competed in a number of exercises.
Frank Miller, Gadsden State welding instructor, said that he values the competition because it is an excellent way to measure his students’ abilities. “Competition breeds excellence, and we have a lot of talented students in the Alabama Community College System. It was an honor to host the competition again and spend the day with instructors and competitors from across our state,” Miller said.
Gadsden State students from the Ayers, East Broad and Valley Street Campuses com-peted in the state-wide competition with five students winning gold medals. The gold medal winners will advance to the National SkillsUSA Competition in Kansas City, June 20-25. Gold medal winners: Jacie Owens, Heflin (Esthetics),
Silver medal winners: Drew Allen, Heflin (Automotive Refinishing), Scotty Cobb, Delta (Industrial Motor Control).
SkillsUSA is the national organization for college/postsecondary students enrolled in trade, technical, and skilled service profession instructional programs including allied health occupations, which represents more than 300,000 students in 130 different oc-cupational areas. The students who place well nationally have a wealth of opportunities provided for them. Gadsden State students have competed successfully at the national level for over a decade.
