This involves categorizing a coin on a scale of 1 to 70, with 1 signifying poor condition and 60-70 mint condition, i.e., not circulated. Other descriptors used include fair, good, and fine.
Two or more professional numismatists grade every coin. To ensure impartiality, graders are not allowed to buy or sell coins. After grading, coins are sealed in a holder, made of a substance which does not affect the coins.
