A DIVISION OF instrumentation Conductor Score 1 Violin I 8 Violin II 8 Viola 5 Cello 5 String Bass 5 Farewell Symphony As the court conductor and composer for Prince Esterhazy, Haydn wrote this piece in 1772 as a reminder to the Prince that the orchestra musicians needed a vacation. In his characteristic good humor, Haydn concluded the symphony with the musicians blowing out their music stand candles and exiting the stage, leaving two violinists on the stage to finish the concert. The Prince graciously took the hint and granted the much-needed holiday. The first movement is energetic and compelling, and should be played with gusto. The repeated eighth notes should be played off the string. The divisi bass parts are for the convenience of less-advanced players. Farewell Symphony

As the court conductor and composer for Prince Esterhazy, Haydn wrote this piece in 1772 as a reminder to the Prince that the orchestra musicians needed a vacation.
