Ratios

Carefully follow the instructions for each part. Make sure to write every ratio in proper

form (examples of proper form 2:3 or 2 to 3)

In Mr. Millette’s basket at the super market there are 6 apples, 24 oranges, and 18bananas.

a)

Write the ratio of the number of apples to the number of oranges.

6:24 OR 6 to 24

b)  Write the ratio of the number of apples to the number of bananas.

6:18 OR 6 to 18

c)

Calculate the unit rate for the ratio of the number of apples to the number of

oranges.

1:4 OR 1 to 4

d)

Calculate the unit rate for the ratio of the number of apples to the number ofbananas.

1:3 OR 1 to 3

e)

Is the amount of oranges per apple greater, or is the amount of bananas perapple greater?

There are 4 oranges for every apple, and there are 3 bananas for every apple. So, there are more oranges per apple than bananas per apple.

Multiplying With Decimals.

Multiply according to the given instructions.

a) Solve using any method: 36.3 • 52.4

36.3 Answer = 1902.12• 52.414527260

+181500190212

b) Solve using the distributive method: 12.6 • 100

12.6 • 100 = 12 • 100 + 0.6 • 100 = 1,200 + 60 = 1,260

 Answer = 1,260

Dividing With Decimals

Divide the following by first converting the division problem to a fraction, and thenconverting the fraction to another equivalent fraction in order to eliminate the decimal points in the numerator and denominator.

0.132 ÷ 0.006

!!!"#

!!!!! ! (multiply numerator and denominator by 1000)!

!"#

! = 132 ÷ 6 =22

 Answer = 22

Dividing With Fractions.

Divide the following USING A MODEL. Leave the answer in simplest form (reduce it).

a)

4 ÷!

Model 4 wholes !  Count the number of !  in 4 wholes (four ! in a whole, so theremust be 4 • the number of wholes =4 • 4 = 16 total, and 16 is the answer).[THIS IS HOW YOU DIVIDE A

WHOLE NUMBER BY AFRACTION USING A MODEL]

b)

!

! ÷ 4

! of the whole filled in !  Divide it by 4 ! Count number of shadedboxes remaining in onesection of the divisions youmade (there’s one box) thencount the total number ofboxes to determine whateach one is worth (there’s16, so the one left in yourshaded section is 1/16,

which is the answer). [THISIS HOW YOU DIVIDE AFRACTION BY A

Model 1/5 ! Count the number of 1/10 inyour shaded area (Answer = 2)[THIS IS HOW YOU DIVIDEFRACTIONS BY FRACTIONS]

Sidenote: If you’re having trouble understanding why two 1/10 equal one 1/5 look overthis chart I made that compares 1/10 and 1/5 (notice how ten 1/10 of the same sizemake a whole, and five 1/5 of the same size make a whole.)

Divide the following USING THE KEEP, CHANGE, FLIP METHOD. Leave theanswer in simplest form (reduce it).
