How it started * Large farms & plantations were established in Virginia * Planters needed workers to help in the planting and harvesting of cash crops, such as tobacco. * English first attempted to enslave Native Americans * This created tensions with the tribes * Native Americans new the land so well they could easily escape
Indentured Servants * The settlers and the indentured servants signed contracts in which they agreed that the servant would work for the land owner for no pay for a certain number of years in exchange for food, clothing, and passage to the New World. * Indentured servants were not slaves * Often the land owner did not live up to the contract and abused the indentured servant. Headright System- the system where landowners were able to secure more land because they paid the passage of an indentured servant. * Once they were free, many moved to the backcountry. * When there were not enough indentured servants, the landowners turned to the slave trade from Africa.
Slavery Slaves-people that were bought to work on plantations and farms and were not able to gain their freedom after a period of time. * Brought to North America through the triangular trade route
* One common trade route was the triangular trade route. Ships would sail from England carrying rum, guns, and other goods to ports on the coast of West Africa. They traded these goods for gold and captive Africans. The ships would then sail for the West Indies and the colonies. This part of the journey was known as the Middle Passage. At this point they would trade the captive Africans for carrying tobacco, sugar, and cotton. The ships would then return to England.
