Sixth Grade is the level at which the Wednesday “After School” program replaces Sunday School. All 6th and 7th graders are invited and urged to attend. A “church” bus brings youth directly from school (including “early release” days). Parents only need to pick youth up at 5:00 pm at Grace. ALL- ABOARD! Toot! Toot!

You could be hearing sounds like this IF you can get past the snowflakes coming on Oc-tober 2nd; the warmth of a new spring on March 22, 2013

bringing the birds back; and finally the ice out on May 13, 2013 so you can get your pier in. BECAUSE the gang from Grace is heading into the wilderness of Glacier National Park again this coming year, and is inviting members young and old to join them.

Jump aboard a bus from Grace to the Amtrak Station Friday, July 26, late afternoon. Leap onto the West-ern Star pulling out of the station around 11:30 pm, either in a coach seat or a sleeper – your choice. After crossing the breathtaking prairies of North Dakota and Montana, unload at East Glacier (not West Glaci-er as in 2010), and a bus will take you a short ride of some 45 miles to your final destination for the week. You will stay either in the main lodge of St. Mary’s; or tent at the group campsite at St. Mary’s at the eastern beginning of the GOING TO THE SUN HIGHWAY; or backpack out into the back country of Glacier. Once again – your choice.

THEN, for five glorious days, both tenters and lodgers are two stone-throws away from the National Park Service’s free shuttles up the mountain to day hikes or longer trails. Each evening, you will descend back to the foothills of St. Mary’s and participate in the even-ing Park Service Programs at the Visitor Center. End the evening with a short worship in the Lodge after a day that began with a morning Bible study.

NOW, the end must come, as on Friday morning a week later you board the bus once again for the short trek back to East Glacier to await pick-up by the East-ern Star as it chugs back home. One more night in a coach seat or sleeper, again your choice, and a final bus ride back to Grace, arriving home on Saturday, August 3, early afternoon.

Want to hear more? Watch for details coming soon, when your fearless leaders of youth and maturity schedule a time to share details – probably in mid-October or early November.

Grace Lutheran’s Web Page www.gracelutherantomahawk.org

You can see most everything that is happening at Grace when you visit our web site!

Our church continues to develop what was learned at the August workshop, “Faith Formation in the 21st Century.” Much interactive content can be found on the Grace web site.

Lekubu Parish: Read what is happening there as well as Grace’s leadership in companion

relationships on behalf of our Synod. Glacier Trip July 26-August 3, 2013: Anyone in

sound physical condition who is ready to handle high altitudes is welcome to come. Registrations

for Amtrak, lodges, and group sites fill up fast, which is the reason the information is out

now. Pastor Check is working hard on this. Bible Introduction: Grace has a four-step intro-

duction to the Bible that families find quite help-ful, but what happens when you miss one of the Sundays? Look it up on the web.

After-School: The early teenage years in Middle School (grades 6 and 7) are critical to develop a

solid family bond; a group of supportive adults surrounding each youth; habits of faith; and

engagement in activities that build all this. Dis-cover, consider, and sign up on the Grace

web site!

Companionship Breakfast —Please join us on October 7th in Fellowship Hall for breakfast from 9:30 to 10:40 am. There will be good people to fellowship with and a wonderful breakfast that you do not have to cook! Every-one is welcome. There will be a freewill offering for the breakfast.

Thank you to all the members of Grace Luther-an Church for the wonderful ordination celebration on Sat. August, 25! I am so appreciative of all of the support you have given me over the years and for the awesome celebration. I feel so blessed to have such a generous and thoughtful church family. An ordina-tion service can remind us that not only does God call ordained leaders, but God calls each one of us to a special calling. Thank you for being a part of my faith journey and for supporting me as I discerned what God’s call was for me. A special thank you to Pastor Mark and Pastor Rebecca, Debbie Hetzel, Dick Huntoon, the Grace church staff and all those who helped with the reception and worship service. Thank you! Pastor Dara Schuller Hanson

A WORD FROM PASTOR REBECCA

A few weeks ago I attended a retreat where I took a leadership assessment. The assessment results weren’t a surprise to me, but narrowed my prefer-ences and ways of leading into a concise report. One of the things that came out of this assessment was that I am a change-agent. I like change, not for the simple sake of change in and of itself; rather my go-to wiring is to look at systems and patterns around me and look for ways to change a system to be more efficient, effectual, and impactful. I get excited about change in systems. It’s how I’m wired, it’s my strength. On the other hand, I am also very Scandinavi-an-Lutheran where changes to some things like my home, environ-ment (rooms, furniture, etc.), and plans can send me over the edge. This is why I hate moving—the boxes, disarray, and unknown. The shadow-side (deficit) of my wiring is that I often don’t know how to get to the place of change that I believe needs to happen step-by-step. I see things in the big-picture, but am often derailed by details—unless the details have to do with something I’m very passionate about. We all have our own natural, innate wiring and go-to way of processing infor-mation, systems, and leading. Not long after I took the assessment I preached about being a welcom-ing church, and I asked those gathered there what kind of church does Grace want to be. It was my hope to get everyone thinking about how we want to be the church in our world today. We do some great things here at Grace, and I know that we have lots of gifts and talents to share with our congregation, the community and the world. Each of us can be leaders, in our own way, so that God is glorified through us. That is what we are called to do with our lives—use what we have been given to glorify God. Now is the time to claim that in each of us and get busy! In the coming weeks and months before I leave for the next chapter of my life, I ask that you dig deep, think hard, dream big, and prayerfully consider ways you can all work together as a community of faith to be the church that you want to be. What are you passionate about? What do you want Grace to do and do well? What needs to be changed? What needs to continue? What needs to happen to get to that point? Now is the time to start talking to each other and finding the answers. I believe this time is perfect for a great deal of self-study, dialog, brain-storming, planning, dreaming—together—to find ways in which we can do God’s work in the world through us. If you’re not interested in tak-ing on this task, that’s okay. I then ask you to simply pray for the Spirit to guide Grace, the leadership, and those who are able to step-up and do the hard work of being church today. Together with God, the prom-ise of Christ, and the guidance of the Spirit, I know great things will continue to happen here at Grace. Your sister on the journey, PR 3

Northern Light Via de Cristo NOVEMBER 1-4, 2012

The Fall Via de Cristo weekend is at Silver Birch Ranch northeast of Antigo. It begins Thursday evening and ends after noon on Sunday. Both Men’s and Women’s events will be at the same time since the camp is large and reserved for Via de Cristo. Applications are due by September 23 (applications received later will be ac-cepted as room is available). Pastor Mark and others from Grace will be serving on the team leading the event. If you are attending for the first time , you will have a sponsor to explain and take you to the weekend. Pick up an application form from the Welcome Center or inquire at the church office or from someone who has attended a VDC weekend.

6th & 7th Graders and Parents

Go to the Grace website at www.gracelutherantomahawk.org, click on Youth and then click the After-School link. Sign-ups, surveys, information, and downloads are available on that site. Please keep watching as more will be added to this site.

Bible Introduction Milestone The pastors will lead an introduction into the Bible for grades 3-8 and their parents during Sunday morning Education Time, 9:40-10:40, on September 30th and October 7, 14, and 21, with a presentation of the Bible in worship at 8:30 on October 28. This is for all in grades 3 through 8 and parents who have not had this introduction with the pastors. Godparents, grandpar-ents, and prayer partners are also welcome. This “Bible Milestone” is very important and helpful to model, teach, and guide families in using God’s Word as the foundation for your family and your guide for faith and life.

Companionship Breakfast

A new and different approach is being taken by those going on the 2013 Trip to South Africa. This trip is about Grace’s ongoing relationship with Lekubu. Those going will be relating and communicating on behalf of everyone at Grace. It is important, then, for all to know who is going, why they are going, and for them to take your messages and greetings to Lekubu Lutheran Parish. You are invited to breakfast the first Sunday of each month from 9:30 to 10:30 am. The servers in the colored T-shirts are the ones who are going to South Africa. Ask them why they are going and what they will do there. Send your greetings to Lekubu through them. They are planning to hold these break-fasts from September through May. The free-will donations received at the breakfasts will be used in the following ways: first, to pay for the re-quired orientation with Rev. Dr. Phil Knutson in South Africa to prepare them well for representing Grace, our Synod, and the ELCA with our companions in South Africa; and second, to offer a “scholarship” for the youth attending this trip. This trip is similar to several ministries at Grace that emphasize relationships, e.g., with Greater Galilee Baptist Church in Milwaukee; Education & More in Guatemala; and many service ministries in our Toma-hawk community. All of these are about relationships. The following have paid $500 to reserve their airfare and place on this trip: Mike and Michaela Galganski; Brent Kelley; Bob and Jackie Leonhard, Aaron and Abby; Jean Schaefer; Jack and Sandy Sonnetag; Marie Stark; Karen Torkelson; Margie, Stephanie, and Nicole Welke; Mary Wilke; and Pastor Mark.

New Constitution A new Constitution of Grace Lutheran received a first vote of approval at the Annual Meeting on January 18, 2012. Two votes are required to adopt this Consti-tution. The second vote is scheduled to be taken at the Annual Meeting in January, 2013.

Please contact the Church Office or the Constitution Task Force members with any concerns, inconsisten-cies or desired changes that you see for the new Con-stitution, Bylaws, or Continuing Resolutions. Mem-bers of the Constitution Task Force are Herb Heyne, Dick Huntoon, Everett Lange, Joe Story, and Pastor Mark.

The Constitution Task Force met on January 30, 2012 in response to concerns, inconsistencies and desired changes that were raised at the 2012 Annual Meeting and thereafter. Please contact them if you have any other issues concerning the Grace Lutheran Constitu-tion, Bylaws, or Continuing Resolutions.

Boiler Update—It has been determined that all six of the boiler parts will need to be replaced. At this time we are waiting for all the replacement parts to arrive and do not have a figure on what the final cost will be. To date we have received contributions total-ing over $17,370 and will not secure a loan until we know the amount we need to borrow. Thank you for your generous support!

Quilts for Graduates Needed A few years ago Grace Lutheran began a new tradition of present-ing our graduates with homemade

quilts at the Baccalaureate service. These quilts have been very meaningful for our grads as they move to the next step in their lives. This year, we have a large group of over twenty seniors. This could be a fun group activity for those who love to sew, or it could be a labor of love for a single contributor. If you would like to help, please call Margie Welke at 453-5797.

Calling All Crafters Remember to prepare now for items you want to contribute for the handmade craft portion of the Cookie Walk on December 8. It is only a couple of months away. Call Barb Schiltz at (715) 453-8246 with any questions. Also, helpers before and after sale date are needed.

Your Stewardship committee chooses special mission offerings for each month based on the needs of our community, nation and world. If you would like to request a special offering for your favorite ministry in 2013, please obtain an application form in the church office.

From the Stewardship Committee

“Living Each Day as a Steward” C.S. Lewis said, “There are two kinds of people: those who say to God, ‘Thy will be done,’ and those to whom God says, ‘All right, then, have it your way.’ ” As redeemed children of God, of course, we desire to belong to that first category. We long to live each day as stewards who earnestly pray, “Thy will be done.” As God’s stewards, we are de-voted to using all that we are and have for His pur-pose. We are God’s stewards each and every day. On the weekends of Oct. 14th, Oct 21st, and Oct. 28th the theme of our worship services will be living each day as a steward. We will learn how the Holy Spirit, working through Word and Sacrament, transforms us to be more like our Chief Steward, Jesus, Who willingly poured out His life in giving and serving, ultimately sacrificing His very life for our eternal lives. Just as Jesus faithfully served His Father by serving us, we are to use our lives and gifts in faithful service to Him by serving others. “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one an-other, as good stewards of God’s varied grace” (1 Peter 4:10). We pray that each of you will take advantage of these opportunities to grow in the grace and knowledge of your Lord that you might be strength-ened in faith both for eternity and for a fruitful life here on earth. The three weekend themes are as follows:

Oct. 13/14 “The Steward’s Identity” Oct. 20/21“The Steward’s Purpose” (Submit Time and Talent Survey) Oct. 27/28 “The Steward’s Lifestyle” (Commitment Sunday)

May God grant us strength and wisdom to be the faithful stewards that He has called us to be. Time & Talent surveys will be collected on October 20 and 21.

GRACE LUTHERAN CHURCH COUNCIL Thursday, September 13, 2012, 6:00 p.m. MEMBERS PRESENT: Sam Bourassa, Heather Engel, Autumn Frederick, Mindy Gabrich, Patti Gaedtke, Jean Huntoon, Judy Juedes, John Kromm, Brian Storm ALSO PRESENT: Pam Kopp and Sarah Mann, Treasurer; Pastor Mark Ziemer GUESTS: Erin Story, Youth Coordinator; Nathon Tobias, candidate for Council Youth Representative MEMBERS ABSENT: Sheila Marquardt Council President John Kromm called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. and offered devotions based on Paul’s First Letter to the Thessalonians, verses 3-8, and the 46th Psalm, concerning meeting difficulties head-on rather than trying to escape from troubles, thereby missing opportunities to serve. We are called to do our job even if it is difficult, remembering the familiar opening words of Psalm 46: God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. In discussion of where God’s presence has been particularly evident among Grace’s congregation, Patti high-lighted Rally Sunday services that brought all age groups together, and also the outstanding ordination service for Dara Schuller-Hanson on August 25. Mindy and Erin both recognized the quality of last night’s (Wednesday, September 12) first Confirmation gathering of the fall. It was moved and seconded by Patti Gaedtke/Brian Storm to approve the minutes of the August 9, 2012 council meeting. Motion carried. It was moved and seconded by Mindy Gabrich/Heather Engel to approve the minutes of the August 20, 2012 special congregational meeting. Motion carried. Pam and Sarah are, and will be, working together as Treasurer(s) for the next few months while Sarah becomes more familiar with the task. Pam reported that the current cash balance is down to $4,135, at least partially re-flecting the fact that August is usually a “hard” month. She pointed out that September will have five Sundays, which she hopes will replenish the cash balance. The mortgage payment in August had to be paid from restrict-ed funds, and she expects that to be a possibility again in September. Pam noted that the bank will be able to process our new loan (for the boiler repair) in only a day or two, the timing and amount of which awaits 1) notifi-cation of the total amount of the bill; and 2) how much money is received toward this expense before then. She announced that $14,000+ has been received thus far. During discussion it was noted that a bill from Mechani-cal for $15,800 is already in, which is for boiler installation (not yet completed at this time). It is not known yet whether pipe insulation will be necessary. Pam and Sarah urged committees to think about getting their budget requests in as soon as possible. A motion was made and seconded by Heather Engel/Patti Gaedtke to approve the Treasurer’s Report. Motion carried. Beginning Mission Reports, Patti again mentioned Rally Sunday. Sunday School classes/lessons will begin this coming Sunday (September 16). There are 82 potential students for the four classes, 21 of whom are the three/four-year-olds. Patti said that Abby Norman will serve as a helper, and she hopes to recruit volunteer help from among the parents. Blessing of the Animals will take place on Sunday, October 7, probably at 9:30 a.m. Patti reported that the initial Confirmation meeting went well; that there will be sixteen 6th graders and ten 7th graders in the After-School program; that adult Bible studies begin Tuesday, September 18; and that the Rite of Confir-mation is set for Sunday, October 14. Patti invited all youth, including the After-School youth, to help with Sun-day School. She closed her report by reminding council that they will be discussing confirmands’ Faith State-ments on Wednesday, September 19 – pizza at 6:30 p.m.; meet with council at 7:00 p.m. In the absence of Sheila Marquardt, Jean reported from the Worship Committee that Co-Chair Bill Sparr re-viewed the activities of the summer, especially another successful Outdoor Worship season. Lisa Elliott noted

that the chief hurdle for this service has been and continues to be obtaining a musician or musicians. Under Fellowship/Groups, Heather discussed the NYG group’s assuming responsibility for the 5:00 p.m. worship service on September 29, and the 8:30 service on September 30. Their presentation will in-clude slides from their trip to the gathering in New Orleans. Heather was encouraged to publicize the next NYG gathering the third week of July, 2015, in Detroit. A report and pictures from this summer’s Wilderness Trip will take place between worship services on Sunday, September 23. The 2013 Wilderness Trip is scheduled for July 26-August 2. Under Fellowship/Committees, Judy said that an individual has offered to donate a ceiling fan to Grace House, and wishes to do the installation himself. Roger Schlegel has suggested that a licensed electrician be consulted regarding the installation. John offered to discuss this further with Roger. Concerning Grace House, Judy re-ported that, to date, the contract for personal use of a portion of Grace House has not yet been returned to her. She will update council on this next month. Judy further reported on serving approximately 120 persons at the reception following Dara Schuller-Hanson’s ordination. She also announced that Homebound Services have been discontinued, with Pastor Mark’s approval, because of low attendance resulting from services becoming available where the people live. Judy announced that a farewell potluck dinner is scheduled for Sunday, November 11, at 5:00 p.m. for Pastor Rebecca. The Fellowship Committee has also been discussing ideas for all-congregation gatherings during the coming year in order for the several congregations, i.e., Saturday, 8:30 Sunday, and 10:45 Sunday, worship. Pastor Mark discussed a possible grant opportunity from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Foundation. This is a one-time, competitive grant opportunity involving the provision of basic needs service to the local community. Because Grace is involved in this type of service, e.g., Grace House, Neighbors in Need, etc., it was suggested that, because of her previous experience with grant writing, Cathy Schmit be contacted. Lornie Haugen’s name was also suggested. Pastor Mark will follow up on this. Under Administration, in order for Sarah, as the new treasurer, to function at the church’s location (Pam has been able to use her own business equipment), she will need a new computer and software. The church buys one new computer each year; next year would have been Pastor Ziemer’s “turn,” and he said that he is willing to fore-go his turn next year, instead moving that purchase up to this year and directing the new computer to Sarah’s po-sition as treasurer. Thus, no computer would be budgeted next year. After discussion, it was moved and second-ed by Judy Juedes/Heather Engel to purchase Sarah’s computer as soon as possible. Motion carried. Debbie Hetzel will be instructed to follow up with Building & Grounds on this purchase. It was moved and seconded by Judy Juedes/Mindy Gabrich to purchase the 2012 software to go into the computer. Motion carried. Under Building & Grounds, Brian reported that it is still not confirmed when the new boiler sections will come in. No update available at this time. Brian shared copies of the new Custodian Job Description, which Dar Anderson has approved (with the exception of the stripping and waxing of the floors by an outside service). Much discussion followed, including who is re-sponsible for cleaning the youth room (old sanctuary area). Apparently, those who use this space have been cleaning it as necessary. The Cleaning Committee will meet once more concerning spring and/or fall cleaning of the entire facility by members of the congregation. John pointed out that this can be a fellowship builder. It is also hoped to get youth involved. Discussion of whether this should be a once or twice-a-year activity, it was unanimously agreed that it should be done in both fall and spring. It was also agreed that Dar Anderson be asked to be present. Sherry Clements attended the meeting briefly to introduce Stewardship’s new Time and Talent Survey that will accompany the Stewardship Commitment Card and letter. The mailing will take place the first week of October, with Commitment weekend October 27/28. In her absence, Pastor Rebecca had distributed copies of her report which emphasized that evangelism is an on-going challenge requiring participation by every single person, illustrating this message by attaching a provoca-tive article entitled, “A Growing Church is a Dying Church” by J. Barrett Lee.

Pastor Mark began his report by calling attention to the recent event in Bloomington, MN, attended by Mindy Gabrich, Mark and Patti Gaedtke, (and Pastor Mark) entitled The Vision & Practice of 21st Century Faith For-mation, presented by John Roberto of Lifelong Faith Associates. Recognizing that technology and time are mov-ing us away from the old Christian education models, the presentation was directed toward eight key driving forces today: 1) Declining number of Christians and growing number of people with no religious affiliation; 2) Increasing number of people becoming more “spiritual” and less “religious”; 3) Declining participation in Chris-tian churches; 4) Increasing influence of individualism on Christian identity and community life; 6) Changing patterns of marriage and family life; 7) Declining family religious socialization; and 8) Increasing use of digital and web technologies. Pastor then discussed the upcoming Lekubu trip, pointing out that this is not just about the persons who have elected to go, but the importance of conversation by the entire congregation so that all feel connected, and en-couraging a “Lekubu Group” to oversee the ongoing relationship. He asked council for a formal acceptance of our Synod’s request for Grace to guide other congregations and conferences in our ECSW on the 2013 visit. Thus, it was so moved and seconded by Heather Engel/Patti Gaedtke. Motion carried. Concern was expressed that Pastor Ziemer might be extending his own involvement beyond his personal well-being; he assured council that “most of the work has already been done.” Mindy and Patti returned discussion to the recent Faith Formation conference, looking at how the issues with which it dealt might be presented to and incorporated within our own congregation, including how to reach out to the various age groups, and the suggestion that Grace might have a “Faith Director.” The topic will be present-ed to the Long Range Planning Committee. Last on the agenda, a motion was made and seconded by Patti Gaedtke/Brian Storm to accept Nathon Tobias as the second youth member of council. Nathon (Nate) is a high school junior and has had considerable experience with Grace’s youth activities, e.g., NYG, Crossways camping, the Wilderness trip, Quakes, etc. He was enthusias-tically welcomed by all. A motion was made and seconded by Heather Engel/Nate Tobias to adjourn the meeting. Motion carried. The meeting closed at 8:30 p.m. with the Lord’s Prayer. Respectfully submitted, Jean Huntoon, council secretary

What is a Lectionary?

A “lectionary” is the practice of reading specific selections from Scripture in a specific order. Grace Luther-an’s Tuesday morning and evening Bible Studies are studying the lectionary, going into greater depth into the Saturday/Sunday readings. Much information about the lectionary can be found on the ELCA website - www.elca.org and enter “lectionary” in the search box. Or search Wikipedia, or the Consultation on Common Texts (CCT) at http://commontexts.org. Daily Discipleship and Daily Faith Practices are ELCA online downloadable Bible studies based on the lectionary used at Sunday worship. These two-page Bible Studies con-nect the Word of God with daily life experiences.

The Jewish Talmud claims that this practice of reading appointed Scriptures on given days or occasions

dates back to the time of Moses and began with the annual religious festivals of Passover, Pentecost, and the Feast of Tabernacles (Talmud, Megilah 32a). The early Christians adopted the Jewish custom of reading extracts from the Old Testament on the Sabbath. They soon added extracts from the writings of the Apostles and Evangelists. Typically, a lectionary will go through the scriptures in a logical pattern, and also include selections which were chosen by the religious community for their appropriateness to particular occasions.

The major principle behind the lectionary is that on a Sunday members of congregations hear the voice of

each writer week by week, rather than readings being selected according to a theme or based on the whim of the pastor . Thus, in any given year the writer of one of the first three gospels will be heard from beginning to end. Likewise the rest of the New Testament is heard, in some cases, virtually in total, in others in large part. Both Hebrew and Christian lectionaries developed over the centuries and in both Christianity and Judaism there have existed one-year and three-year cycles. Not all of the Christian Church used the same lectionary, and throughout history, many varying lectionaries have been used in different parts of the Christian world. Until the Second Vatican Council, most Western Christians (including Lutherans) used a lectionary that repeated on a one-year basis. The Revised Common Lectionary, now used by churches around the world, is based on the 1969 Ordo Lectionum Missae, a three-year lectionary produced by the Catholic Church following the reforms of the Second Vatican Council. The Revised Common Lectionary was the product of a collaboration between the North Ameri-can Consultation on Common Texts (CCT) and the International English Language Liturgical Consultation (ELLC). After a nine-year trial period, it was publicly released in 1994. The CCT thereby represents the majority of American and Canadian Christians, has been widely adopted in Great Britain, and continues to be adopted by “liturgically-based” churches around the world. Lekubu Lutheran Parish and all of the Madikwe Circuit and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Southern Africa follows this lectionary. On any given Sunday we are hearing the same readings as they have.

Keep in mind that no Sunday lectionary can cover the whole of Scripture without the necessity of very long readings on a Sunday or a longer cycle of years. Sometimes there has to be a choice between telling a long story or omitting it entirely. However, the daily lectionary, devised by the Roman Catholic Church and again adopted by many of the “liturgically-based” churches provides additional readings for every day.
