Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), founded on the Vijayadasami, September 27, 1925 observes six festivals: Makar Sankranti, Varsha Pratipada, Hindu Samrajya Divas, Guru Purnima, Raksha Bandhan and Vijayadasami. Makar Sankranti marks the transition of the Sun into the zodiacal sign of Makara (Capricorn) on its celestial path, which is the first change in the zodiac after the winter solstice. With the holy dip in the rivers, the shift of the sun into the ever-lengthening days is believed to wash away sins and bring peace and prosperity. Swayamsevaks meet on Makar Sankranti and perform drill in their traditional attire. RSS organized the festival in West Bengal and invited its Sarsanghchalak, Mohan Madhukar Bhagawat. Earlier, RSS had taken permission for Bhukailash ground in Kidderpore, but the police turned it down. “While refusing the permission the police said it was too small for the crowd and may lead to law and order problems,” said Jishnu Basu, Pranta Karyawahak. Thereafter, RSS obtained the nod of the army for Brigade Parade Ground. But, the police again refused permission. “When we applied for Brigade Parade ground, the police turned down the plea on the basis that the ground is too big and expressed their difficulties in deploying sufficient security due to Gangasagar Mela,” he added. On January 9, RSS filed a petition in Calcutta High Court seeking permission to organize the festival at the Brigade Parade ground. After its first petition fell flat due to technical flaws, the Calcutta High Court on January 13 gave permission to the rally on January 14, turning down the police’s objections. While addressing the rally, Mohan Bhagawat said, “Even Rishis achieve the Moksh following intense difficulties; they never give up.” He asked, “Can Hindus perform their religion without any hindrance?” “Our founders stated that Hindus should not blame others for their own plight. We must organise ourselves, empower ourselves and earn respect; the rights of weaker is always ignored,” Mohan Bhagawat added. “RSS is committed to selfless service for the welfare of the entire society, ensuring protection of Hindu Dharma. RSS was never opposed to any faiths and swayamsevaks should offer help to the needy,” he concluded. The festival started with the hoisting of the Bhagwa Dhwaj, along with melodious ‘Ghosh’, followed by Sangh Prarthana and drills performed by the 4000 swayamsevaks.
