II B. Tech II Semester Supplementary Examinations, Nov, 2013

Power Systems - I

(Electrical and Electronics Engineering) Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 75

Answer any FIVE questions

All questions carry equal marks

*****

1). a Discuss the types of Nuclear reactors and also give the brief description of PWR,

BWR and FBR.

[8]

b Draw the neat general layout of Thermal Power Station.

[7]

2). a Give the classification of different types of Turbine used in power systems.

[8]

b A Pelton wheel is to be designed for the following specifications:

Shaft power = 11,772 kW; Head = 380 meters; Speed = 750 r.p.m. ; Overall

efficiency = 86%; Jet diameter is not to exceed one-sixth of the wheel diameter.

Determine:

The wheel diameter

The number of jets required, and

Diameter of the jet

[7]

3). a How do you solve the single phase AC distribution system in which the power

factors of the load currents are referred to receiving end voltage?

[8]

b In a 3-phase, 4-wire distribution system with 240 volts between lines and neutral

there is a balanced motor load of 250 kW at 0.8 power factor. Lamp loads connected

between respective lines and neutral absorb 25, 75 and 100 kW. Calculate the

current in each line and in the neutral wire of the feeder cable.

[7]

4). a Draw the single line layout of Outdoor substation.

[7]

b List out various bus-bar schemes and explain.

[8]

5). a What is the effect of low power factor on the generating stations?

[8]

b Why is the unity power factor not the most economical power factor?

[7]

6). A residential consumer has a connected load of 15 lamps of 100 W at his premises.

His demand is as follows.

From midnight to 6 AM – 300W

From 6 AM to 6 PM -- No load

From 6 PM to 7 PM -- 600 W

From 7 PM to 10 PM -- 1300 W

From 10 PM to Midnight -- 500 W
