FRIDAY, OCT. 12, 1894.
XT HATKB HAWA1IANB.
From some inexplicablo motive theAdvertisor is raking up ancient bit-tor- y
to throw mud in tho face of thenative Hawaiian race. One of itslatest freaks in thin line is to dig outof a newspaper Clo of 1810 an ac-
count of the elocution of Kama-navv-a,
grandfather of Queen Liliuo-kaiau- i,
for tho murder of his di-
vorced wife. Upou the face of itthis is a shocking episode in com-
paratively recent Hawaiian history.Yet whon viewed in tho light of an-
cient Hawaiian superstitious univer-sally hold withiu tho memory of thegeneration then living, tho ghastlyhue of tho event becomes very groat- -
modified. Iu tho oldon times thehigh chiefs held the power of lifeand death over all their vassals andsubjects. Under tho surviving influ-
ence of this heathen superstitionKatuauawa, from authentie accounts, felt ho was within his rights in get-
ting away with his divorced wife, topermit him to marry a new wifewhich ho could not do, while thefirst oue lived, under the missionarylaws. Nolther tho aristocracy northe commonnlty of the Hawaliansregarded his crime with horror, audhis execution only made a sort of in-
teresting holiday for them. But ithardly lies with tho English race toupbraid the Hawaiian race withbloody crimes committed iu the in-
fancy of Hawaiian civilization.Wliou tho light of tho gospel of Calvary had boon shining on merryEugland for ages, it is not ancienthistory that records it, many a princeand princess, as well as other meuaud womon some more noble in na-
ture oven thau in name were foullydone to death to clear the way totho throne or make safe its tenurefor ambitious aspirants or rulingsovereigns with uneasy-restin- g
heads. Aud then whon the sameraco carried tho "lamp of life" acrossstormy seas to America, what a re-
cord of brutal and most barbarousmurder and torturings was made inthe name of tho same religion thatis claimed to have rogonorated Ha-wai- il
The burniug, and hanging, and drowuing of helpless old womenfor witchcraft in Massachusetts, anil, later, the infamous houndingto grave of Koger Williams, an apos-
tle of tho same Christianity, iullhode Island theso aro modernhistorical iucidenta that might asjuatly be flung in the faces of theprofessed white Christians in Honolulu to-da- as the crime of Kama-naw- a
and its expiation are in thefaces of nawaiians aud their royalfamily.
One of these journalistic scaven-
gers amidst the stale debris of thodead past has sueered at ivalakauaiu his youth as an uukeiupt loaferof the water front. The fact is thatiu 1813 tho family to which Kalo- -
katia belouged was regarded as theleadiug oue of tho kingdom. Usmembers were tho largest laud-owiior- s,
but Kalakaua'8 father likehimself being a spendthrift got ridof much of the property. To showthe Rtaudiug of Kalakaua's family, the following extracts are takenfrom n niisaiunary book Kev. Shel-
don Dibble's History of the Sand-
wich Inlands, published at Laliniua-luu- a
iu ISlIt. What appear iubrackets are uotos ou tho margiu ofthe copy boforo us at this writing:

What the Advertiser expects togain by its abusivo campaign againstthe native raco at this juncturo issomething "no follow cau under-stand." It appears all the worsofrom the fact that the person re-
sponsible for it all gained all thelittlo promiueuco ho over enjoyedfrom licking tho hands of Hawaiianroyalty. J udged by tho stylo of tholiteraturo ho fathers, too, ho wouldbenefit now by taking a few lickiugsfrom tho hands of an average nativeHawaiian schoolmaster.

Editor Bulletin:Tho lato outrageous conduct of

The attention of the road
department has been called,
one way or another, to the"leaning tree of Waikiki."To persons who ride or driveto the beach once or twice a
day this leaning tree is a constant menace and it occurs to"old subscriber" as though thetime has arrived when some-
thing should be done beforethe tree falls into the road anddoes some damage. It is hardlyof sufficient value for the ownerto make any objections to itsremoval particularly as it canbe done at little or no expense. The tree may hang in its pre-
sent position for a long whileand not do any damage but ifit should fall when horses werein the neighborhood it is quiteprobable there would be a run-
away.

It is rather amusing, the in-
quiries that are made here re-
garding the Steel Aermotor. Some people imagine that, likeother windmills, wind is re-
quired to run them. This is amistake. All you have to dois to set the mill going andthe law of gravitation or goodcommon sense on the part ofthe wheel sets it in motion andkeeps it going. We have neverheard of a wheel that will turnas easy or that will develop thepower shown in an Aerm-otor. This fact makes thegeared mill doubly valuable tothe plantation man, becausebesides pumping water it willsaw wood, run a grindstoneand a half dozen other articles, with one attachment now be-
ing evolved in the brain of aninventor it will be able to runa newspaper or a government. There are other windmills man-
ufactured, but they are notgeared mills and consequentlywill not do half the work ofan Aermotor. We have allsizes of wheels and pumps in
stock and can give you waterquicker than you can say JackRobinson.
The Pansy Stove has givenbetter satisfaction than anyiron stove ever introduced in

The water as itcomes from the tap is of sealbrown color and contains moreliver fluke to the cubic inchthan you can imagine. Whenit passes through the filteringstone it is as clear as crystal andentirely free from impurities. The cost of one of these filtersis slight compared with thebenefits derived. 2. Ltjcol Is more economical than Un--seed OU.
PROOF THAT LUCOL IS MOREDURABLE.
Six years of actual use in exteriorliouco painting in California (themost trying climate for paints), inthe burning heat of the Arfxona Desert, the Arctic cold of Alaska, and ontho Atlantic coast, have fully andpractically shown that Lucol alwaysoutwears Linseed Oil under tho sameconditions. All the acid works inHan Fnuicifco have discarded Lin-seed Oil for Lucol.
ILLUSTRATE THI8 YOURSELF.
Put strong ammonia on Linseed andLucol iainls. Tho Linseed paintsare destroyed in a few minutes ; theLucol paints are practically unaffect-ed.
PROOF THAT LUCOL IS MOREECONOMICAL.
Break up 1 lbs. paste white loadin otto pint of Lucol, and tho samequantity in ono pint of Linseed Oil.Spread the paints on similar darksurfaces for comparison. The Lucolpaint spreads as far as and coversmuch butter than tho Linseed paint. To gel equally good covering with theLinseed tntiiii you havo to uso 2J lbs.of white lead to ono pint of LinseedOil. This means a saving of f lb. ofpaste lead to chcIi pint of Lucol used,or 0 lb, to every gallon, equivalentto your saving moro than half thotint cost of the Lucou
Lucol is not in competition withcheap Linseed Oil substitutes.
