The ConceptThe Concept
• Remove judges from ground checkpoints
• Improved scoring accuracy and reduction in number of timing errors
• Allows for tracking and judging of more parameters in the future
![Page 3: GPS Scoring Procedures](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062717/56812b13550346895d8f0870/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
Garmin GPS Map 76sGarmin GPS Map 76s
• Two units installed in each aircraft– One designated primary, one secondary
• Position is recorded every second– Approximately 10 foot accuracy
• Scoring data is captured every two seconds– Allows for up to three hours of data– Maximum error is 1 second per leg
![Page 4: GPS Scoring Procedures](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062717/56812b13550346895d8f0870/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
GPS Scoring Kit InstallationGPS Scoring Kit Installation
• Two GPS units will be sealed in a camcorder bag secured in the cargo compartment
• External antennas will be mounted– In rear window of C152/C172 aircraft– In side windows of baggage area of PA28
aircraft, one on each side– Suction cups and tape will hold antennas in
place

Starting TimeStarting Time
• A gate has been established for each runway– 17/35 is the
preferential runway
Taxiway ECHO is the gate for either 17 or 35. Aircraft MUST be airborne prior to crossing the gate, full length departure is required.
For 18 or 36, the gate is the departure end of the runway.
Runway 4/22 is the gate for either 12 or 30. Aircraft MUST be airborne prior to crossing the gate.
For 4 or 22 the gate is the departure end of the runway.

Arrival Over Turn PointArrival Over Turn Point
• Arrival time is determined in one of two ways:– Crossing the plane– Point of closest approach (PCA)
• Missed turn point– Scoring program will still take time, but will
assess a penalty for missing the checkpoint

Crossing The PlaneCrossing The Plane
Time is taken as the aircraft crosses the plane
Gate established perpendicular to the inbound course

Point of Closest Approach (PCA)Point of Closest Approach (PCA)
3/4 NM radius Turn Point Circle
Time is taken at closest data plot to the turn point within the 3/4 NM Turn Point Circle

Crossing The Plane & PCACrossing The Plane & PCA
Since you are inside the Turn Point Circle, you will be scored on crossing the plane, not PCA.
![Page 10: GPS Scoring Procedures](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062717/56812b13550346895d8f0870/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Missed CheckpointMissed Checkpoint
Since you are outside the Turn Point Circle, you will be scored on PCA, not breaking the plane, and a missed checkpoint penalty will be assessed.
