What a marvellous 6 months

we have had at the Centre

have all been successfully

rehomed. Snoopy even has his own Facebook

page!

With grateful thanks to Betty we have seen 4

dogs rehomed abroad, Cammy to England, Mai-

sie to Sweden and Shadow II and Kim to Ger-

many.

In all we have rehomed 19 dogs all neutered

and micro-chipped, 4 cats and 21 kittens in the 6

months to the 30th June.

My thanks go to all the dog walkers including the

holiday makers who turn up each evening. Spe-

cial thanks go to Ceilidh and Rebeka who help

Gozo SPCA has been notified of several recent cases of heat stroke among dogs waiting in hot cars for the fer-ry, both in Malta and Gozo. They appeal to the public travelling with animals between the islands to take the

following precautions:

Try to make the ferry journey in the cool of the early morning or late evening, but definitely avoid the hottest hours in the middle of the day.

Provide companion animals with fresh cool water to drink; it is important it is neither chilled, nor hot from the sun.

Whilst waiting, keep side windows open and use screens on the front and rear windows.

Owners should not walk their dogs on tarmac in the heat of the day – if they try walking on it with bare feet themselves they will understand how hot tarmac burns a dog‟s feet.

Owners should carry a wet towel in a cool bag to wrap around their pet if it becomes distressed and starts panting.

Heatstroke can be a life-threatening condition and should be treated seriously.

If a dog or cat shows signs of heat stroke (excessive panting or breathing difficulties) the owner should seek veterinary advice at once; immediate action may save the pet‟s life.

Keep the car cool by keeping the engine running with air-conditioning on, if available

Dogs should not be left in the ferry garage during the crossing and should never be left unattended in a car at

any time, but especially during summer.

Dogs Trust Best Friends ProgrammeDogs Trust Best Friends Programme

We have been given a really great boost by being accepted for the Dogs Trust Best Friends Programme, which is giving us financial help to extend our educational programme. This has enabled us to buy two sets of light-weight display boards, one specifically for our school visits and the other a more general display to educate

the public about our work.

We had struggled on with our old, heavy boards for far to long and we were often deterred from using them because of their weight. Now, with our smart new boards, we seem to be doing more and more outside events. We sincerely thank Dogs Trust and their International Director David Newall for arranging the purchase and

delivery of the boards from the UK.

We are extremely grateful to Dogs Trust for helping us with the production of promotional material to bring

our work to a wider public.

Greetings!

My name is Harvey Hound and I am just over 2 years old. I live in the UK in a very pretty village pub and my Mum‟s family live on

Gozo.

The other day, whilst browsing through some family pictures of my doggie cousins in Gozo, I noticed how very stylish they looked in their SPCA neckerchiefs! I decided to start a new trend and that these neckerchiefs are definitely this season‟s „must have‟ for discerning four legged fashion conscious icons like myself – indeed, I am the 2010 Wiltshire Pet Idol Winner – a title that means I must be ahead in the fashion stakes over here at all times! I asked my Mum‟s family to send me a neckerchief which duly arrived and having groomed my magnificent ears especially for the occasion, I am delighted and very proud to send you this

picture of me posing in front of the beer pumps in my new attire.

Fundraising Report by Mark Thorogood

The focus of our fundraising in the last six months has been the car boot sales (or charity fairs as they are now to

be called). They continue to be held at their new location in Victoria, near the bus terminus. The organisers (The

Friends of the Sick & Elderly in Gozo) decided to to continue the fairs throughout the winter, and with the new ven-

ue proving popular we were able to attend seven fairs this winter, raising over € 4,000 for your society. They will

resume in September, so please consider us if you are doing any clearing out - we are particularly in need books.

On the subject of books, The Gallery in Xlendi (near the HSBC ATM) have very kindly started a book exchange/

sale, with all proceeds going to Gozo SPCA. You can either buy books, or swap your books for a donation. You can

also donate books - any surplus's will be sold by Gozo SPCA at the charity fairs. If you have any bookcases (or

even suitable planks of wood), please let us know as The Gallery would like to display even more books if possible.

It is now a legal requirement for all dogs to be both microchipped and display an ID tag with a phone number. We

sell tags and engrave them for just € 3 including p&p within the Maltese Islands.

By the time this reaches you, our 2012 calendar will be on sale. We are extremely grateful for Dogs Trust (UK) for

paying for the printing of the calendar. This means that all the € 4 purchase price will go directly to help us care for

the animals of Gozo.

Thank you to all the members of the Gozo Walking Group, who through their donation of € 1 per walk per person

have raised € 425 to far in 2011 - their walks will resume in the autumn.

Gozo SPCA’s beloved Sam: Sadly Departed JANUARY 2003 – 21st FEBUARY 2011

It was very hard, for everyone who knew him, to come to terms with the passing of our Sam – „Sam the Man‟, who was beset by so many ailments, often self-inflicted by his unorthodox eating habits, but who always bounced back. He finally succumbed to a liver problem from which there was to be no recovery. He died as he lived, with dignity and courage. He was put to sleep at home, comforted by his family and his friends. Sam‟s devoted friend and vet was there for one last time, to put him to sleep. The end came gently and peacefully; the final act from the vet who had brought Sam back from the brink on so many oc-casions.

Sam was larger than life and at times he seemed more human than canine. He was educated too, – his “Sam‟s Corner” page in our newslet-ter was always popular with our readers. He was much loved by all the children who met him during his regular school visits, usually accom-panied by his little sidekick Dennis. His attributes were many; meeting

and greeting on behalf of Gozo SPCA, collecting money during Flag Week (who could resist those soulful eyes?) and being the face and voice of Gozo SPCA through his letters to his many sponsors.

Sam came to the Centre as an unwanted 9 month old dog in 2003 and stayed for the next 4 years, during which time as Alpha Male, he kept total control of all the dogs there. A look and a woof was enough, nobody argued with Sam and there was no fighting. But the time came for our fella to have a taste of home life, first fos-tered with Roger and Helen and then in his last years with Betty.

He was a great dog, much loved and admired and he is still missed by his many friends and his devot-ed sponsors. He is buried in a quiet country field in Gozo.

A windy winter’s day,Sam doing what he loved best: Being out with

Dear Readers,

Sam‟s death came as a big shock to me; we went back a long way – he came into the shelter in 2003 and I followed 18 months later. We became best mates and he looked out for me, me being what one

might term “a trifle vertically challenged”.

We spent these past two years living together in almost perfect harmony with Shadow (another SPCA old lag) and Magic the whippet and that Betty Wom-

an.

Sam was always the Alpha Male, which suited me fine, but now my mate was gone and who was to be in charge I asked myself? He left me his best lead, which says “Top Dog”, so I naturally assumed that I took the mantle of command. Ah – that Betty Wom-an soon put me straight on that count and said that I am just a little squirt (how rude!) and that she is in

charge.

However, I had Sam‟s lead and his bed and so decid-ed to go the whole hog and offer to take over his undoubtedly popular page in this magazine. Now, dear readers you must understand one thing – Sam was an educated chap, as a result of the four years he lived at the SPCA Centre, where he spent every evening before bedtime reading the newspapers that lined the floor of his kennel. He favoured the broadsheets – The Times, Guardian, Telegraph etc., no tabloids for him. Personally I preferred the ones with pictures. Sam always described himself as an erudite fellow - I am still trying to find out what

erudite means……….

Now where do I begin with my social diary? My life has been one mad whirl of activities and I really don‟t know how they all managed before I took over all this PR stuff. I have done my share of school vis-its, which I really enjoy. These were much enhanced by the presence of the lovely Moira Delia, TV per-sonality and Dogs Trust Education Officer. Moira and I hit it off immediately – us both being stars; unfor-tunately her elderly dog Nina took an instant dislike to me, she is obviously not ready to recognise when

a new star is born

My first engagement was to attend the Doggy Day at the new shopping complex at Tigne, Malta. This also included a fun dog show and I won third prize in the “Who‟s the Hunk?” competition. I looked particular-

ly cool in my camouflage bandana and security vest. I won 30 Euros of dog food, but what did that Betty Woman do? Can you believe that she said that I didn‟t need the food and she chose instead

food for the baby kittens at the Centre?

Next came two mornings meeting and greeting and pressing the paw at the Lejlet Lapsi weekend. Then it was back to Malta to visit our friends and sponsors at Verdala International School. This was a red-letter day as Shadow made her first ever school visit. Those who know her history will know what a big achievement it was and we were all so

proud of her.

I joined the usual team (Mark and Betty) for the agricultural show in Nadur, where I met many of my fans from the local school. Then barely time to draw breathe before we were back in Malta for the Trade Fair, again some serious networking to be done, including having a chat with the Deputy Prime Minister, who seemed very taken with me.

Now, if I played my cards right………………….?

As I sit down to write this, the sun is cooking our tomato plants & my toes; the birds, chickens and goats are singing; the smell of bleach, fertilizer and washing permeates the stifling air; and I am counting down the last of our days on this beautiful rock. Over the last six months, Ed, Poppy & I have been inhabiting, exploring & enjoying this homely little spot on the globe. Befriending Man & Beast alike; adapting to the timeless pace; and helping sup-port the happy souls of the Gozo SPCA Centre. We have enjoyed the successful re-homing of many dogs and cats, as well as reflect-ing on the sadder times, such as the recent loss of poor Suki. The 'regulars' down at the centre have always been welcoming and we can see that without their continuous support the animals would not look so happy and well loved. Having checked my lug-gage allowance for the flight home, it seems Harold would take up the entire allowance, and despite her ability to col-lapse into a heap, Doris won't fit

in my hand luggage. Therefore, like all all the other cats and dogs at the centre, I can only cross my fingers that a loving family stops by to see just how handsome and

loving these animals are.

Poppy, who turns three next month (as she keeps reminding anyone who will listen), has learned how to interact with ani-mals, and also how to solicit treats and attention from the locals. She will be going home with a happy heart and a round belly! We will be reluctantly returning to the damp grey shores of England with many happy memories, along with an unexplainable desire to clean steps. We hope that in some small way we have contributed to the running of the SPCA and that a couple of fundraising projects raise some money for them. "What fundraising projects?", I hear you mumble over your cornflakes. Well, Ed, who regularly exhibits back in Brighton, has pro-

duced a painting of Calla Lilies for auction. Poppy raised a handful of euros by raiding her Daddy's wallet for her charity box. As for me, I have pro-duced a collection of Poetry & Illus-tration postcards from artists around the globe with all proceeds going di-rectly to the SPCA (for more infor-m a t i o n p l e a s e v i s i t

A warm breeze has picked up, rustling the dry leaves, and Poppy has begun the search for her missing Dad, and so I scratch out these final words wishing the people and animals of the SPCA all the best for the future. As a final point, if anyone is feeling the sum-mertime blues I would suggest finding out when the next 'Dog Wash' is taking place. It's messy, it can be chaos, but it will definitely leave a smile on your

face.

Kittens Looking for Homes

Donations

We were very grateful to be one of the recipients of the big fund raising held for animal welfare NGOs in Malta dur-ing the winter. This was given as pet food vouchers, which were presented to us in April when One TV’s Pink Panther programme presenter Nevise Borg Cagliari and pet food supplier Nigel Borg Cardona came to the Cen-tre to record part of the programme about our work for animal welfare on Gozo . It was shown at the end of June, giving our society very good cov-erage.

Here at Gozo SPCA, we have the most gorgeous, fluffsome bundles of fun looking for homes. Usually abandoned, they have all

been lovingly raised at the centre, with lots of cuddles, care and tlc, and are neutered and have all been health-checked. If you

would like to come in and see them, then give us a call at the centre!

It‟s all change for the sponsored dogs, as with the exception of Shadow and Dennis (Super Star) all the Centre dogs have been rehomed. This is wonderful news for the dogs and the volunteers, as we are very sad to see dogs spending years in the Centre; but we never give up on the belief that the perfect „forever‟ home is out there some-where for every dog.

Of course Shadow and Dennis Super Star are well settled at home with that Betty Woman, so barring the odd treats and gifts, they chip in their sponsorships to help their mates in the Centre.

Sponsorship money is mainly spent on toys, treats and new beds, all of which disappear at an alarming rate, es-pecially when our boisterous puppies are in demolition gang mode.

Obituaries

SHEILA BROCKLESBY passed away 11th April 2011 after a short illness. Although living in the UK, Betty‟s sister was an en-thusiastic and generous supporter and was one of our first sponsors; Shadow being her special dog for several years up to her death. She also involved a number of her friends in raising funds for Gozo SPCA. In her last days in a hospice in Sussex she gained much pleasure and comfort from the daily visits from the family‟s pets.

JOAN FLETT – Mother of „the English Guy‟, passed away on 17th June 2011 in England at the great age of 96 years. She was an imaginative supporter of Gozo SPCA, devising varying ways to help raise money. One great idea was to make comfortable cotton dog harnesses for our collecting dogs to wear during Flag Week. She also made plastic bag holders, which were very popular and sold well. But her greatest interest was Sam, who she sponsored, She was instrumental in Sam being fostered and finally leaving the Centre for good, so he had much to thank her for!

LAURENCE AITKENHEAD passed away at his home in Gozo on 20th June 2011. In the years that he lived in Gozo he made many friends and he also became a generous supporter of Gozo SPCA. He was well known as a clock and watch repairer and valuer of jewellery; this led to many donations coming our way, as he refused money for valuations and always asked that it be given to Gozo SPCA. He also gave his expert advice when we were given items of value. Our sympathy goes to his wife Deb-bie and son Lorenzo

Outside Events by Betty Berry

We have had a busy few months attending a variety of events in Malta and Gozo. One especially important day was the Dogs Trust Doggy Day, held at the new Tigne Point shopping complex. This event was to promote shopping at the Point with your pet. It was great to see well-behaved dogs in the complex, shopping with their families; a rare sight in Malta up until this day. With the recent news of severe restrictions on dogs in public gardens and beaches in parts of Malta, this day was particularly encouraging and the Point management are to be congratulated for this initiative.

We participated, mornings only, at the Lejlet Lapsi weekend in Victoria for the first time. Windy weather didn‟t make it easy, but eventually we found a good spot in the main square to set up and we had two good mornings with a good attendance at the stand, and thanks to Net TV supplying power, we were able to engrave dog discs.

We were back in Malta again for the Trade Fair at the end of June, at the invitation of the NGO Council of Malta to join the stand celebrating the Year of Volunteering. During our one evening there we had some interesting visitors and were honoured by a visit from Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Tonio Borg. He was especially interested to read the Dogs Trust Charter for human health, which promotes dogs for our well-being.

The local council and residents always appreciate our attendance at Nadur Agricultural Show. As usual we were kept busy selling our fund raising items and engraving dog discs.

International Rehoming by Betty Berry

It was just over a year ago that we found a starving, dehy-drated Tal Cacca puppy, far from habitation on the Sanap Cliffs near Munxar, Gozo. This little scrap of a puppy looked much younger than she really was; lack of nourishment had severely stunted her growth; however she must have reckoned that she was on to a good thing and so, determined not to be left behind, attached herself like a limpet to our own gang of

dogs.

The rehabilitation of Cammy, as she became known, started right there and then. It was the time of the British General Election and Cameron wasn‟t quite the right name for a girl. In spite of being starved and riddled with ticks, fleas and worms, Cammy had a really sunny nature and soon won over all the Gozo SPCA volunteers. She was certainly a live wire

and hyperactive, so regular long walks were a must.

Fate smiled kindly on Cammy, as soon after she had complet-ed all her vaccinations, treatments, micro chipping and spay-ing, Michelle, a kind English lady came to the Rehoming Cen-tre in Victoria, fell in love with Cammy and made the big de-

cision to take her to the UK after the required period.

Puppy Cammy was now in fine fettle and bursting with good health, but she just did not grow, so she will be forever a

puppy or else a new breed – a miniature Tal Cacca.

A bit of home socialisation was now on the agenda and having never been in a house in her life, the cooker, fridge, micro-wave, TV, etc were viewed with astonishment. However she took confidence from the other dogs in the house and decided

that it was all OK

The day came for her departure, but having already done one visit to the cargo section at the airport in her crate, she was totally unfazed by the whole journey, unlike her carer, who

shed a few tears as she disappeared from view.

She was treated with every care at Malta Airport and arrived

at Heathrow in great spirits and all ready to face her new life.

The news is that she has settled into home life brilliantly and now has a new best friend – a proper full sized Tal Cacca called Harvey, who was another Gozo stray, taken to the UK several years ago, Her new human family have taken this

lucky dog into their home and their hearts.

SWEDEN

Two years ago a very sweet Tal –Cacca X called Shandi was chosen to go to a new life and family in Sweden. She has been a huge success and in fact now has a job – she is a PAT (Pets as Therapy) dog in a workshop for people with dementia and Alzheimer‟s in Stockholm. She has an amazingly calming influ-

ence on everyone and is much loved,

Early this year Veronica, Shandi‟s owner came for a week‟s holiday and guess what? Yes, she chose another hunting dog - our Maisie. She was lucky as Centre volunteer Anne and her long-suffering husband Tony fostered Maisie at home for six weeks. What a difference those weeks made to our „crazy Maisie‟ and their dog Charlie (remember Charlie?) thought she was the best thing since sliced bread! She will now be helping Veronica at the dog day care cen-

tre, which she runs.

It is so exciting for us all to see our dogs finding wonderful new homes – these are some of the lucky ones who went abroad in the past few months. We are so grateful to those kind-hearted people who go the extra mile to take these dogs on, it does require a considerable amount of effort and expense, but we are

there to help and advise all the way.

A few days after Maisie left, we were back at the airport again; this time to send Shadow II, a recently rescued dog, found in starving condition and Kim, another dog that came in to care in bad condition and now was one of our „black, shiny jobs‟ to their new home near Berlin. Their new family accompanied them and once more these dogs had a job to do – to become friends and companions to children with special needs, living on a farm. They are joining three dogs which went last year and which have

been a great success.

NEWSLETTER

Nine schools in Gozo have been visited since September, in

both the state and private sectors. The presence this year of

Moira Delia, Dogs Trust Education Officer has greatly enhanced

these visits – the children like her very much and they are

greatly entertained by her clever little dog Nina. Many of the

children recognise Moira from her very popular TV animal care

programme “Puss in Boots‟ and it is good to have a Maltese

speaker for these occasions. We are very grateful that she is

able to join us as she also extremely busy covering many

schools in Malta.

Of course the Gozitan canine stalwarts, Dennis „Super Star‟,

Geisha and Snippet, accompanied by their respective minders

have also been on duty, thus ensuring that there are always at

least two dogs at each school. Undoubtedly the dogs do make

it so much easier to get the children to understand about ani-

mal care and they particularly enjoy the stories about our

rescued animals.

On the last two visits to schools in Zebbug and San Lawrenz we

were able to use our lovely new display boards which have

been kindly donated to us through the Dogs Trust Best Friends

Programme.

David Gahan, our school visits organiser will be contacting

schools in early September to arrange next year‟s programme

when we are hopeful that we may be invited to visit even

more schools in Gozo; The future for good animal welfare is in

the hands of our young generation, so it is up to us to get the

message over, loud and clear.

DOGS Looking for A Loving home…..

Mum Bonnie and her pups were

dumped in Qbajjar out of a car.

Doris is a six month old Boxer cross

and will do anything for a treat.

Rocky is a bouncy Pointer who loves

to run around

Harold is an 8-year old Labrador who

wants a comfy retirement.

Midge and Elliot: Siblings, Wouldn’t

think so with the size difference!!

Little Kimbo is Kiwi’s pup and she is

going to be a small dog

Wallace is boy of around 5 months.

Playful and loves going for walks.

Cody is around two years old and is a

tal-Fenek cross.

Kiwi is a young, gentle and calm Fox

Terrier. She is mum to Kimbo.

Letter from the Editor…………

It‟s been a successful year so far with regard to rehoming, and

as Val said in her report on the front page, some of our long-term residents

have finally found forever homes. Mischief, Calla, Janey and Snoopy were all

at the Centre for more than 2 years.

Snoopy was there the very first day I start-

ed volunteering, back in April 2006: Now

he has his own facebook page. I do miss

them, but am really glad that they gone to

good, loving homes. Proves that there‟s a

home out there for everyone (even me). If

you‟ve got one of our ex-residents lighting

up your life, it would be great if you could

send a photo for inclusion in the

magaxzine, along with an update. Email

After the uncertainty about the Gozo

SPCA‟s future last year, due to a lack of

progress on new premises, I‟m glad to see

that Flag Week is back on after an absence

in 2010. This is a great chance for us to

raise much needed funds for the society,

and it gives us a chance to talk to the pub-

lic about Gozo SPCA, and what we‟re up to. Work to get us a new centre is

in the planning stages, and we‟re really hoping for some good news soon, for

the sake of our furry friends here on Gozo.
