Thesis Project

A design doesn't have to be up-to-the-minute, different or imposing to be successful, as long as it's fulfilling a need, but should lead to innovative works of art and services. Creators discover that ideas that may seem eccentric are worth exploring and that the 'common-sense' solution is not always the right one. Design can facilitate services in a number of ways, from making sure products and services meet the needs of users to increasing innovation within organizations and bringing new perspectives to issues such as procurement.

At every point design is an influential, be it in developing affirmative image for various facilities or for delivering a thriving consulate project, with a functional, appealing and welcoming perimeter.

However, embassy/consulate facilities, in recent years, have become massive, fortress-like buildings surrounded by high walls and/or fences, with forbidding entrance pavilions. The perimeter of the embassy/consulate compound is its leading edge portraying the first glimpse of good design and attitude while establishing and maintaining a sense of security.

UNIQUENESS OF THE PROJECT As there were options for selecting the thesis topic, I wanted to design an office structure, excluding the category of residential or any other commercial or recreational building as they are much presented as in the market.

Generally in the current market, office buildings are given more importance in its interior ambience and less importance for its architecture in façade. So moulding a form is one of the core scopes of the project.

Filtering out in the category of office buildings, embassy/consulate is chosen as it has its own unique features and is a kind of a special building and has not many restrictions in the path of design.

GENERAL PLANNINGEasy vehicular access and egress with provision for adequate visitors and

staff. Parking along with the necessary services to building shelter should be provided at the main entrance for protection during inclement weather and as defence precautions. The hierarchy of spaces with respect to the users will demand the convenience and isolation of sensitive areas.

The amendments of physical security of the building by perimeter walls and/or fences, setbacks from proper lines, exterior lighting, easy control of entrances and visual control of stairways and elevators.

THRUST AREAAs the concept is ‘contemporary tropicalization’ which main¬ly deals with ‘tropical architecture’, a proper complete study on its understanding and innovatively applying experimen¬tal design techniques on the design. Thus creating an iconic building, exploring the design in depth with respect to form and façade.

CONCEPTUALISATION Sprawling over an area of 5 acres with a number of animated structures, cluttering the plains, the design is a through following of tropical architecture in a contemporary style. Clear cut lines, the play of volumes, and the oasis of the green design defines the design for the Spanish consulate. Blurring the definition between the exterior and the interiors, the greenery and the trees that dot the site have not been disturbed or uprooted.

Contemporary tropicalization is achieved with the incorporation of tropical building design principles along with Contemporary

style of design which are known for creating buildings free from older historical styles, along with experimentation of new materials. The building form is mostly imbibed from contemporary styles.

END RESULT Though enclosed in the tall walls that defend the structures the diplomatic structure is a charm; especially when you are seeing the maze of building and greenery. A free flow of energy has been established through these solid masses, by way of elements like louvers, fenestrations, court yards, adding to the artistic charisma. Cultural ethos, vernacular

materials, and social norms - all have played their role in creating a design that reveals the full glory of a foreign element that can yield up a corridor in the past.

The vision of the trees and vegetation cover, the serene wind even in the peak of summer, the shaded pathways, the various hues of flora and fauna, structures rising from and embracing nature leading to the creation of third space through the achievement over the entire life cycle of the building. Through this we can preserve the identity of regional culture, unique nature of the place and symbiotic sanctity of the individual.

back water RESORTs t u d i o p r o j e c t

Back water resort is my sixth semester studio project. In this project I used Revit architecture software as the main software to model and render the views of the building.

Page 13: Gowtham nandakumar architecture and design portfolio

The design of the back water resort was explored with the concept of adapting vernacular architecture with the incorporation of modern styles. As the site was located in Kerala, I used the vernacular materials like wood, laterite, etc., and other resources.

The traditional architecture is typically a rectangular structure where four halls are joined together with a central court yard open to the sky. The four halls on the sides are named Vadakkini (northern block), Padinjattini (western block), Kizhakkini (eastern block) and Thekkini (southern block). The architecture was especially catered to large families of the traditional tharavadu, to live under one roof

and enjoy the commonly owned facilities of the marumakkathayam homestead.

A detail study on the vernacular architecture of Kerala was done, which resulted in knowing about the planning techniques of the place. With respect to the old style of nalukattu and eattukattu planning of tharavadu the hotels and cottages where clustered to bring out the real nature of Kerala’s tharavadu.

Swimming pool was designed with resemblance to the ambalam and its kulam.

Elements like charupadi, mutram, wooden pillars, etc., where brought to life in the design.

Film and music academy is my 8th semester studio project, where I had an eye opening after my internship period to explore more on design. In this project I adopted the concept of modern architecture to explore more on the edifice than in that of planning, even though the building is well planned with all needs.

The building has an institutional block and hostel with a mess block, along with other buildings like a separate auditorium even with the inclusion of a couple of the same in the intuitional block.

The hostel block and the main intuition block has a linkage through a bridge which binds along with a mess unit.

Lots of design explorations were done on the façade part to bring out something new on design basis. Design explorations were also done on the form to achieve a unique shape.

Sound was considered as a main element in this design so sound insulation was provid-ed by the use of heavy, thick components in which the airborne sound energy will initially dissipated through transfer of the airborne sound into the component.

Specific attention to highly sensitive areas of music practicing areas, preview theatres, etc,. using Bison boards, glass wool and oth-er sound insulation materials.

Recording studios are given complete sound insulation even for the furnitures present in-side, including the mike stand with proper rubber materials.

Auditorium as a separate block was also completely acoustically designed.

Lots of trees are planted on the site which serves as a sound barrier for interior site from the exterior site and vice versa.

Benihanna is a japanese restaurant that is to be made in Nehru place, Delhi. The space is split into two spaces named BENIHANNA and BENIHANNA EXPRESS. The former will be a high class restaurant whereas the other one is ment to be made as a busy, fast moving restaurant.

Worked in the process of design development, modeling fully packed 3D visual model with true textures and furniture arrangement. Drawings of the furniture details were also made.

Paul residence is a residential project developed for Mrs.Priya Paul in Delhi. This project is the costliest project among all the projects that I have worked so far.

The style of ART DECO is followed in most of the elements developed in the building.

I worked in the development of the interior spaces like powder room, kitchen, toilet, etc. along with photo realistic renderings and I have also in exploration of kitchen shelving units, flooring pattern, main door, etc.
