4 Bonds – MOTTO, SIGN, SALUTE & LEFT HAND SHAKE
1. MOTTO
The motto of the ranger is service. i.e. Selfless service to the
society and community. To serve the society she has to be
physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight.
When there is a call for service, a Ranger should be ready in
her mind and body for all emergencies. It means she has to be
properly trained and equipped with necessary knowledge and skill to meet the situation.
2. SIGN
The sign is made by raising your right hand palm to the front, thumb resting on
the nail of the little finger and the other fingers upright, pointing upwards. The
three fingers remain a Ranger of the 3 parts of the promise. The sign is given at
the time of taking promise during investiture ceremony and at the time of the
renewal of the guide promise. It is also used as a greeting.
3. SALUTE
Salute is given by raising the right arm smartly to
the level of the shoulder, palm to the front with the
three fingers stretched together the first touching
the forehead and the thumb closing on the little
finger. After Saluting the arm cutting to the front
is quickly and smartly brought down curling the fingers.
Salute is done as a mark of respect and good manners. All the members of the scout
guide movement around the globe salute each other once a day. The first to see the other
scout or a guide member is the first to salute irrespective of rank.

The members of the movement salute at the time of hoisting of the flag, Flag etiquette and at
the time of Visarjan (Disperse) on the closing ceremonies in a camp.
4. LEFT HAND SHAKE
The members of the movement greet each
other by shaking their left hand and saluting
each other around the world. It comes from
Ashanti tribes when once Baden Powell met
Chief of Ashanti tribes. BP saluted the chief
with his right hand but the Ashanti chief
offered his left hand and said "In our land
only the bravest of the brave shake hands with the left hand, because to do so must drop our
shields and our protection.
