Page 7: GOTV MINUTE-BY-MINUTE Guest Trainer: Brendan Kelly, GOTV Director Facilitator: Hope Wood, NOI

Election Day is filled with hundreds of moving parts A successful E-Day has document that outlines the minute by minute actions you will need to execute.

You should start writing this document now and plan for ongoing revisions.

If five syllables are too many, you can refer to the Minute-by-Minute by it’s nick name, the Tick-Tock.

WHAT ARE WE TALKING ABOUT?

Page 10: GOTV MINUTE-BY-MINUTE Guest Trainer: Brendan Kelly, GOTV Director Facilitator: Hope Wood, NOI

• First rule: Trust your experience– What has worked in the past?– What are the 2-3 mistakes from past Edays that you have

learned from?

• Write down everything you know– List out the times your canvass, phone and visibility

shifts etc start• Work backwards from polls closing.

– When Should staging locations be open?– What reporting times make sense?– Reporting numbers and bellweather reporting often must be at

different times.– Work Chain of Command into the schedule.

• Be Honest– The Tick Tock shows how serious GOTV is, it should be a bit

scary!

ELECTION DAY MORNING

Page 20: GOTV MINUTE-BY-MINUTE Guest Trainer: Brendan Kelly, GOTV Director Facilitator: Hope Wood, NOI

You and your team need to wake up on Election Day

– Alarm Clocks are Great–Many Phones have Alarm Clocks on

them– On E-Day combine all technology with a

phone tree

OTHER E-DAY ORGANIZING TOOLS

Page 23: GOTV MINUTE-BY-MINUTE Guest Trainer: Brendan Kelly, GOTV Director Facilitator: Hope Wood, NOI

The Tick Tock is a best practice that keeps the GOTV Train Moving on time

Other vital details to think about are:– Plan to ensure your team is awake– Office Set Up–Multiple copies of everything– Having a plan for post E-Day office clean

up

OFFICE/STAGING LOCATION SET UP

Page 25: GOTV MINUTE-BY-MINUTE Guest Trainer: Brendan Kelly, GOTV Director Facilitator: Hope Wood, NOI

• Factory Model.– Remove all unnecessary comfort.– Remove all unnecessary clutter– Separate types of labor as much as possible (ie Phones,

Canvass, Visibility).– Have a bullpen and a question area.

• Is there internet access? Is there Cell Phone Reception?– If the answer is yes, still find a plan B and plan C.

• Make your location a safe and secure space.– Have a physical blocker with a greeter at the entrance of your

location– Keep packets and lists in a safe and secure place until

distribution

OFFICE/STAGING LOCATION SET UP

Page 26: GOTV MINUTE-BY-MINUTE Guest Trainer: Brendan Kelly, GOTV Director Facilitator: Hope Wood, NOI

• Best Practice: Secure office

Page 27: GOTV MINUTE-BY-MINUTE Guest Trainer: Brendan Kelly, GOTV Director Facilitator: Hope Wood, NOI

Best practice is to have at least 3 copies of canvass and call lists

One copy to be usedOne copy to be used for substitutions if

neededOne copy to be held in a secure location in the

event of total disaster.

(Even/especially if you’re using MiniVAN, plan to have paper copies just in case.)

BEST PRACTICE: MULTIPLE COPIES

Page 28: GOTV MINUTE-BY-MINUTE Guest Trainer: Brendan Kelly, GOTV Director Facilitator: Hope Wood, NOI

Plan an office clean with your staff for the next day.– Everyone always wakes up early the day after– Win or lose, no one wants to be stuck in the office days later

This is the last part of GOTV: The Clean Up– Include it at the end of your GOTV Plan like anything else– Include it at the end of the Tick Tock

BEST PRACTICE: DAY AFTER CLEAN UP
