What is a ‘westwerk’?

A ‘westwerk’ (or westwork) is the monumental, west-facing entrance of a Carolingian, Ottonian, or Romanesque church. The exterior has multiple stories between two towers. The interior includes a chapel, and a series of galleries overlooking the nave.In this way, the Emperor or nobility could watch and participate in the mas below. The chapel was also used for special festivities.
