Ive spent the last 28 years being a Spanish/English/Health Science teacher and school counselor, so I have a strong passion for education and college and career readiness, in addition to STEM. I graduated from Holdrege High School, so I am happy to be home, but more importantly, I understand the importance of Extension and 4-H in both Phelps and Gosper counties. I grew up in 4-H and some of my best memories are that of my involvement in 4-H activities. I love working with youth and their families to help them achieve their goals and dreams, so I hope you will share those with me. Gosper County May 2020 4-H News

WELCOME OUR NEW 4-H EDUCATOR, JENNA CHRISTENSEN!

Hi! I’m Jenna Christensen and I’m really excited to be the Extension Educator for Phelps and Gosper coun-

ties. I’ve spent the last 28 years being a Spanish/English/Health Science teacher and school counselor, so

I have a strong passion for education and college and career readiness, in addition to STEM. I graduated

from Holdrege High School, so I am happy to be home, but more importantly, I understand the importance

of Extension and 4-H in both Phelps and Gosper counties. I grew up in 4-H and some of my best memories

are that of my involvement in 4-H activities. I love working with youth and their families to help them

achieve their goals and dreams, so I hope you will share those with me. If you have any ideas or if you

think of something, let me know…..I love new ideas or even spinning old ones into something exciting. I

can’t wait to meet everyone and get to know what y’all are interested in so that I can find programming for

you! I want to grow 4-H into something even more amazing for our two counties--I want to keep doing what

we are doing and add to it to make it even better!

Congratulations!

Let’s celebrate the

As the COVID-19 is an ever changing situation, many are asking if we will have

the county fair. As of today, planning for the county fair continues! The Ag

Society manages the fair celebration for the county. This includes entertain-

ment, vendors and space for competitions. 4-H is a welcomed guest. If any ad-

justments to the county fair dates need to be made, the Ag Society will inform

the community. We are thankful for their dedication in creating a safe and invit-

ing celebration for all. GOSPER COUNTY FAIR July 21-25

Nebraska 4-H and Phelps-Gosper 4-H will celebrate 4-H with 4-H contests!

The 4-H program continues to work with local health departments. 4-H competitions and showcas-

es will move forward but may look different. The priority is to have face to face 4-H. However, if a

virtual format is needed, Nebraska 4-H will give guidance for the county to move forward!

Nebraska 4-H COVID-19 Response Nebraska 4-H takes the health and safety of our community very seriously and we are carefully monitoring the rapidly evolving COVID-19 situation.

Nebraska 4-H programming will proceed in a virtual format through June 15

While this was an extremely difficult decision, we are putting the health and well-being of our staff/families/youth at the forefront. This includes all scheduled educational programs, competitive events, and 4-H club and council meetings hosted by Nebraska 4-H. Additionally, there will be no tagging or weigh-in; families will be responsible for their own tagging and DNA collection. We are continuing to plan for summer events and will make determinations six weeks in advance of the event and then continue to monitor the situation up to the event.

We thank you for your continued patience and support as we learn more from our public health offi-

cials and educational partners, and determine the best way to continue serving young people dur-

ing this time. For updates on Nebraska 4-H and the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s evolving posi-

tion on COVID-19, please visit our website at covid19.unl.edu. We also encourage you to refer to

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website for the most current recommendations

pertaining to health and personal risk factors.

UNL Introduces Online Livestock Judging Practice

During this unusual time, UNL knows it is extremely difficult for youth to have the opportunity to practice live-

stock judging and prepare for future contests. This new video series will provide students the chance to eval-

uate the class, listen to a critique of the class, and gain knowledge regarding terminology for their reasons

moving forward.

Each week Blaine French, Head Livestock Evaluation Coach and Extension Educator, will add 1 to 3 clas-

ses to the series. Youth can access these videos at 4h.unl.edu/livestock or 4h.unl.edu/self-paced-videos
