Yes! Yes! Yes! But he uses your past to “Qualify” you for Kingdom

work, not as a disqualifi cation. No one is too messed up to be used by God.

Look at the men and women of the Bible who had some “felonies” in their past. Moses was a murderer, King David was an adulterer, Rahab was a prostitute, Paul was persecuting Christians, and Peter was locked up in prison! God used each and every one of these people. Moses was used to lead the Israelites out of slavery, King David was used as a leader and he was a man after God’s own heart. Rahab was used to hide the Israelite spies from a wicked and perverse people. Paul was used along with Peter to write the Majority of the New Testament.

God does not discriminate and he is an equal opportunity employer! He uses “Ex” everything; ex-cons, ex-gangsters, ex-pimps, ex-players, ex- thugs, ex-abusers, ex-victims and everyone in between to win souls for the Kingdom. He knows that if you’re an “ex” than you have been blessed by the power of the Word, and are now able to be a blessing!

Only God has the power to change a man or woman in their weakest moments caused by trials. When one is at the bottom, the only spiritual response they have is to look up, and cry out in the midst of the fi re; understanding that God is using this trial to purify and refi ne you, so that he can

ultimately use you in a major way! Who better to reach the gangsters, thugs, cons, pimps, etc., than an anointed Ex-thug or ex-con who is under the power and control of the Holy Spirit, no longer living the way that they once did?

We all have a Job to do for the Kingdom, and that’s to spread the Word of God! Whether we have a Doctorate in Theology or a GED, we have all been commissioned to bring the Word. God just doesn’t use the qualifi ed, he qualifi es the used!

I’m so thankful that I’m qualifi ed. Even though I’m temporarily in prison, I understand that it’s only by God’s grace that I’ve gone through the fi re and come out purifi ed and refi ned by the furnace of affl iction to be a testimony of how God brought me from a life sentence to life of freedom, with one job, and that’s to bring it! I’m bringing it to those who are mirror images of who I used to be, and everyone in between! Knowing that God doesn’t see us for what we’ve done and been, but He sees us for who we will be in Christ Jesus.

If you’re willing to be used, God “will” use you! T he harvest is plenteous, but the laborers are few! God does do background checks!

THE BATTLE FOR BETTER PART 2

When I write, I write from a place of personal conviction. I write because I believe with all my heart that there is something in the

words I pen that may be able to help someone move forward in their life, and no longer be held captive to anything that counteracts their purpose. Today's article is no different. In fact, I feel even more passionately about today's message than I ever have before. Perhaps it is because of its relevance in my own “battle for better.”

The ability to stay in one place is one that is not afforded to us as human beings. Our lives are literally established on the grounds of opposites. Either we are going forward or we are going backward. Either we are going up or we are going down. I believe there is no such thing as standing still. I say that because, I once read, “Since the earth is always moving forward, if you are standing still you are already behind.” How true those sentiments ring in my heart as I share with you this next installment of the “Battle for Better.”

The one thing that seems to hold most people back from a prominent future and personal freedom are these words, “I don't want ______________ to think that I...” You fi ll in the blank with the person's name or position in your life. We get passed over for promotions on the job, we miss out on healthy friendships, and we are miserable in our places of employment; all because we chose to play it safe. No progress is ever attained without risk.

As you read this article, please understand that I am not by any means suggesting that you live your life without constraint or self-restraint; nor am I encouraging anyone to ignore wise counsel. But I also have to challenge traditional rationale by asking, “What do you do when the counsel you get comes from someone you trust...but their advice is coming from a selfi sh place or a skewed vantage point?”

People will say all the time, “I know him/ her.” Do they really??? The truth of the matter is, you are ever-changing, ever-evolving, ever-developing, ever-growing. They tend to assert what they think you need to do, based on a biased personal reference point of your

life. As a matter of fact, that reference point is further distorted because they are usually looking at your life from their vantage point. What is the difference between the two? The reference point is based on a marked moment or moments in your history. Their vantage point is based on position and perspective at the moment when they marked a particular reference point.

Here is an example. A mother tells her daughter-in-law not to put onions in Johnny's food because he hated them when he was growing up. Her reference point was Johnny's preference as a child. Now Johnny is 39 years-old with a family of his own. As he grew up, his taste buds changed. Now he loves onions cooked into his food. But because mom is on the outside now, looking in, she has no clue about this dramatic change in her son. Her reference point remained the same even though her vantage point had defi nitely changed. She was now on the outside looking in.

People's reference points for your life often do not leave room for your future evolution. So, they in turn hold you to the limitations that may have “limited you” in the past. You have to overcome that by realizing that yesterday's limitations are tomorrow's opportunities.

Never make your decisions based on guilt trips. Guilt trips are really a long journey back to the place where you already stand. How many people have felt themselves dying on the inside because they were afraid of what the family would say if they left the “family church where they grew up” to go to a church that encourages personal and spiritual growth and development? Let's face the facts. Your family and friends may never appreciate the church home you select, the person you choose to marry, what you decide to study in college, or the career path you choose to pursue. But, if you get wise counsel, and you are absolutely sure in your heart of the next step for your life, YOU DO NOT OWE ANYONE AN EXPLANATION OR AN APOLOGY. JUST DO IT!!! Would you prefer to spend your life happy that you tried, or resenting the people who infl uenced you not to try?

But why do we live like this? What makes us victims of the expectations of others, rather than the purveyor

www.GospelNow.Net8

Page 13: Gospel Now Magazine 16th Edition

of our own dreams and personal aspirations? I think it is based on one of two things (or a combination of both). First, I believe we live our life at the mercy of others' opinions so we have someone else to blame when the chapters of our life keep closing in turmoil, rather than peaceful resolve. It is so easy to shift the blame onto others for our own indecision. Somehow, we get the mindset that avoiding a response removes our responsibility to ourselves and others. I'm sorry. It does not work like that. If you choose to go with common opinion rather than God's direction, then any misery that results is no-one else's fault but yours. If he were alive today, I would tell you to ask Jonah. It took three days in the belly of a whale to give him a change of heart. Please my friend, do not end up in a Jonah experience because you choose to bow out of the “battle for better.”

The second reason I think we center our lives on others' opinions is because, to not go against the grain keeps our lives comfortable. But the truth is, before long, you wind up frustrated; because where you are, is not where you are supposed to stay. Dorothy landed in Munchkin land and was celebrated. She was a big woman in a small place. But in the end, had she stayed

there, she would have been quite frustrated because that place wasn't built for her! Do not let people box you into places that were built for them; and don't let them make you feel bad because you are bigger than where you landed. You do not need people who will try to hold you in Munchkin land. You need people who are going to push you to follow the yellow brick road, and will even lend a hand to help you to get on it.

Perhaps the hardest thing in life is to deal with the idea of failing at something; but I need you to understand that failing doesn't make you a failure. Your unwillingness to get back up and keep moving is what makes you a failure. Even if you have to back up and regroup for a moment, that doesn't mean you're a failure. The people with all the negative opinions will probably laugh and judge you if it doesn't look like you are succeeding right away. I would be remiss to not admit that their jeers can be painful. But, you can be comforted in the fact that, while they are laughing, they are still stuck at your starting place.

The X-ChangeHOW’S YOUR CHILD’S SUMMER EATING?

By: Antonio D. Gibson

Childhood obesity is a serious medical condition that affects children and adolescents. It occurs when a child is well above the normal weight for his or her age and height. Childhood obesity is particularly troubling because the extra pounds often start children on the path to health problems that were once confi ned to adults, such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Childhood obesity can also lead to poor self-esteem and depression. www.mayoclinic.com/health/childhood-obesity/DS00698

So let's work together to build a healthier generation of kids!

InertiaA Movement in Motion

Childhood obesity is a serious medical condition that affects children and adolescents. It occurs when a child is well above the

Do’s – Try to keep your child on a 4-5 meal plan

(Breakfast, Snack, Lunch, Snack & Dinner).

Don’t - Fill your house with junk food and let them

snack and graze all day, because they may not want to

eat balanced lunches or dinner.

Do’s – Increase fruit and veggie intake (Enjoy the

summer fruits: watermelon, berries, melons).

Don’t – Let them sleep their day away; because

after their necessary sleep hours, productivity goes

down and will start a bad trend of staying up late, and

sleeping in all day.

Do’s – Have them drink plenty of water (8 - 10 glasses

of water a day, and more if they are outside playing).

Don’t - Provide excessive sugars, sugary drinks and/

or caffeine (Often times, there is plenty in their diet

already, don't add more).

Do’s – Make summer foods fun (Create meals, Try

new locations to eat, ie at the park, or the backyard)

It’s summer time!!! Across America, parents are scrambling to re-adjust their work schedules to accommodate their child’s newly-found freedom, at least for the next few months. Are you one of the parents who is making sure your child(ren) start their day off with a good breakfast (Even

when it’s not FCAT)? Or do you simply just hate turning the stove on during the summer?

Grilled Fajitas• Tacos• Homemade Hamburgers or Pizza• Salads (Fruit or Leafy)•

Well, the summer months are excellent times to take advantage of the extended daylight and stave off bad habits that often develop, especially for kids who do not stay on an active routine. Here are a few Do’s and Don’ts for summer eating .

Regular exercise, often done outdoors, is just as important during the hot months of summer as it is during the cooler seasons. Unfortunately outdoor activities often place people at serious risk of dehydration, which can lead to other heat-related illnesses including -- heat exhaustion -- heat stroke -- and in severe cases, death. Millions of Americans are at risk for heat-related illnesses; however, the risk is signifi cantly increased for 4 groups of our population. Those most at risk include:

Children: When summer vacation from school arrives, most children spend a great deal of time outdoors being active. Because children have a larger surface area in relation to body mass, they often gain heat faster than adults when the outside air temperature is higher than body temperature.

Athletes and exercisers: People who spend hours training and competing in the hot summer sun often do not have an adequate intake of fl uids to make up for the loss of fl uids caused by their activities.

Outdoor workers: Workers such as landscapers, construction crews, police offi cers, postal employees, and others who spend most of their days in the heat, often have little time for bathroom breaks or for drinking fl uids. As a result, these workers may not consume enough fl uids during their workdays.

Elderly people: There is a fi ne line between how heat affects most adults and how it can affect the elderly in a more profound way. It's extremely important for senior citizens to practice a gradual acclimatization to heat, that puts emphasis on hydration.

Is Your Body Acclimatized to Heat?

How many of you think, "I'm used to the heat; it doesn't affect me?" That statement may seem common-sense; however, nothing could be further from the truth when it comes to heat-related illness and dehydration.

According to Dr. Noel D. Nequin, president of the American Medical Athletic Association, "Being 'used to' the heat or 'acclimatized' is necessary for the body to perform in hot, humid conditions without overheating. But acclimatization increases your need for fl uid to

match the increase in sweat rate, which puts you at higher risk for dehydration and heat illness."

How does one acclimatize their body to heat? It takes about 10 to 14 days of working or exercising in the heat for your body to adjust or become acclimatized. You should cut down on the intensity of your exercise or activity during these fi rst days. Once your body is heat acclimatized, the amount of sweat you produce, and other total body fl uid losses, increases because you sweat sooner and more than before you became acclimatized.

The good news about summer heat is that staying healthy is as easy as becoming educated about your body's need for fl uids, and the signs and symptoms of dehydration which can lead to heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke and heat exhaustion.

Drinking for Hydration

The best time to consume fl uids is before you are thirsty -- by the time you are thirsty, your body is already dehydrated. It's best to drink on a schedule when it is hot outside. Avoid drinks containing caffeine or alcohol while in the sun or heat. These types of drinks stimulate the production of urine, thereby promoting dehydration. The best drinks are water, or one of the many fl avored sports drinks that are on the market.

According to Dr. Nequin, "Research clearly shows that a properly formulated sports drink like Gatorade, combines fl avor and sodium to encourage people to drink more than they would when they only have access to water. Sports drinks help to replace some of the electrolytes you lose through sweat and provide carbohydrate energy to working muscles."

Water is a necessity that the human body requires to stay healthy. If you fail to drink enough daily water, or other non-caffeinated fl uids, you may experience a heat-related illness such as dehydration. You well may wonder, "How much water do I need to stay hydrated and prevent dehydration or other heat-related illnesses."

Adults need 17 to 20 ounces of fl uid before beginning activity, as well as an additional 7 to 10 ounces every

Summer Heat... STAY HYDRATED...The summer season is upon us and it's time to think about preventing dehydration

and heat-related illness. Did you know that about 318 Americans die every year of heat-related illnesses, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC)? The sad fact is that most of these deaths are preventable -- if the victims understood the realities of dehydration and heat-related illness more clearly.

Page 19: Gospel Now Magazine 16th Edition

10 to 20 minutes during activity. Your fl uid needs don't stop when your activity is over -- you should consume 24 ounces of fl uid within the fi rst two hours after outdoor activity.

Children need 4 to 8 ounces of fl uid before beginning outdoor activities and 5 to 9 ounces every 20 minutes while they are outside. Once kids return from outside play or activity, they also need to consume 24 ounces of fl uids within the fi rst two hours after they stopped their activities.

Did you know? One adult-size gulp of fl uid equals one ounce of fl uid, and one child-size gulp of fl uid equals one-half ounce of fl uid.

More Hot Weather Tips• While pouring water over your head might feel

good; it does not have any affect on your core body temperature -- make sure you put plenty of water and other fl uids into your body.

1. Get rid of those empty-calorie foods. These are foods that do not deliver needed vitamins and minerals. For example: cookies, candy, sweetened drinks, chips, pastries, hi-fat salad dressings and spreads. When possible, switch to light salad dressings and spreads; and use diet beverages as an alternative to sweetened drinks. Remember, out of sight, out of mind. 2. Stock up on healthy great-tasting foods. There are some great-tasting reduced fat chip options such as the Baked Lays®, Reduced -Fat Ruffl es®, and Cape Cod® reduced-fat potato chips that use less fat and canola oil. Here are more suggestions of healthy substitutes for your pantry.

3. Reduce the saturated and trans-fat in your pantry. Health-wise, nothing good comes from eating foods that contain saturated or trans-fats. Some experts advise that trans-fats and saturated fats together should make up no more than 10% of our total calories. Others say our trans-fat intake should be as close to zero as possible. Let’s become label readers. When a product label lists "hydrogenated" or "partially hydrogenated" vegetable oils or shortening among the fi rst three ingredients, it contains saturated and trans-fats. Choose processed foods with fewer

total grams of fat. Reduced-fat options tend to have a lot less saturated fat and trans-fat per serving than their regular counterparts. Here are some examples of snack food with lower saturated and trans-fats.

• Reduced-Fat Ritz: 140 calories, 4 grams fat, 0 grams saturated fat (per 30-gram serving)

• Orville Redenbacher's Smart Pop: 110 calories, 2 grams fat, and 0 grams saturated fat (per 7.5 cups popped)

• Reduced-Fat Bisquick: 140 calories, 3 grams fat, .5 grams saturated fat (per 1/3-cup mix)

It is important for consumers to become more aware of what is in our food and how the food is made. Making over our pantries, we will gain more knowledge of what is healthy or unhealthy in our pantries. So let’s get started making over our pantries for Summer.

it is essential to stock your pantry with great-tasting, healthy choices. summer is here and it is time to update your food pantry. a well-stocked pantry is important to people

with a busy lifestyle. Here are a few suggestions to give your pantry a healthy makeover.

Fourth of July is here and the summer is fl ying already, with backyard BBQs, sparkler-lit picnics, and fi rework beach parties; what’s not to love about our great Independence Day?

Have fun with rEd, WHitE and BluEpieces to get you into the patriotic spirit for whatever fun event you have planned when you celebrate our nation’s independence. The one thing to really keep in mind when dressing for the Fourth of July is not to go overboard.

There are three colors to work with here, and if you try to wear them all at once with a bunch of different pieces, you're going to end up looking like a walking fl ag; which, I guess, is not bad if you're in a parade. Otherwise, keep it to one or two colors. The point is to look FASHIONABLE, not frightening.

Another option to consider is playing with the various shades of blue and red; think coral, rose, turquoise, and teal; or, add in a completely neutral color, like beige or brown, to balance the brights. Both of these ideas stick to the festive fl avor, just with a little fl air. Now, the only exception to wearing all three colors at once is when it comes to jewelry, bags, and shoes. If you have a sweet pair of red, white, and blue shoes, then by all means, go ahead. Flag earrings? If you have them, then fl aunt ‘em!

That long-venerated object, the fl ag, now seems to be used freely to decorate clothing.

i celebrate MY BirtHdaY on JulY 4th, and I'm defi nitely proud to be an american, so you can understand why the

Fourth of July is one of my favorite holidays. i Hope Your July 4th Holiday is a FasHionaBlE one, because

this Birthday FasHionista will celebrate in style!!!

MARTHA

Page 27: Gospel Now Magazine 16th Edition

Congratulations to you on the phenomenal success that your recently released project is experiencing already! What goes through your mind when you think about how God literally propelled you from the local stages and sanctuaries of central Florida, to the global platforms and arenas that you often minister in?

Thank you so much! I'm really excited about what God is doing during this season of my life. What goes through my mind is how incredibly honored I am to get the chance to share with the world what God has given me! I never cease to be amazed at how good God is. He's shown me over and over again that His timing is perfect and that if I stay connected to Him, He will direct my steps and put me right where He wants me to be.

Having grass-roots gospel in your genes, did you see a career in gospel music as the inevitable path for your life or were there other pursuits competing for your affection?

I've been singing since before I can remember, and I've been a fan of Gospel music for most of my life. Praise and Worship is my passion and

Gospel Music is the only thing I've ever really wanted to sing. I've had 9 to 5 jobs and other things I thought I wanted to do, but the only thing that really motivates me is writing and singing.

When you became a household name more than a decade ago, was it ever an intention of yours to cross cultural boundaries?

It's never been anything I've had to strive for or intentionally try to do. It's been a very natural progression for me. All I can say is, God did it! I really believe that if the motive is to lift up Jesus, then He'll draw all men to Him. Genuine Praise and Worship draws all people to Him and ultimately brings us together in spite of any boundaries.

You are one of the most precious gifts to the Body of Christ and your passion for His presence is evident in your ministry. When you began the movement, EPIC (Experience a Passionate Intimate Connection with God), what was the primary objective?

As you stated, EPIC stands for; Experience a Passionate, Intimate Connection. The goal for

Like an arrow from the quiver of God, central Florida native, Martha Munizzi has gone forth with the power of praise and worship, impacting the hearts of believers in her path while changing the face of gospel music. The Grammy-nominated, Dove and Stellar

Award-winning praise and worship artist’s newest release, “Make it Loud,” comes as a “declaration for Christians to stand up and be bold and vocal about their faith.” Crossing cultures and generations with her energetic and exhilarating style, Martha Munizzi is being celebrated as the best-selling independent artist in the history of gospel music. In an interview with Gospel Now, Martha Munizzi shares her passionate pursuit

for God’s presence and the power of genuine praise and worship.

EPIC is to bring leaders, singers, musicians and anybody who loves to worship together and experience His presence. It's the norm to have a service that is a few minutes of worship, and the

teaching of the word is the main priority of the service; but EPIC is an event where Praise and Worship is the driving force. The primary focus is on worship and giving people an opportunity to be transformed in God's presence.

Your entire family is deeply involved in ministry. How have you been able to keep the family balanced while maintaining ministry focus?

I think the best thing my husband Dan and I have done is keep our entire family involved in our ministry. Each of our children has an active role working in our ministry. They run our product table out on the road, and our oldest daughter Danielle sings with me now, and is also featured on our new album, "Make It Loud." It's a dream come true for me!

Where did your urban, contemporary charismatic style come from?

Church! I've grown up being infl uenced by very diverse styles of music; from southern gospel to CCM, but I've developed the majority of my style from the time I spent as a worship leader in our local church. I would primarily teach our choir and music team Gospel music, because that was and still is my favorite style of music.

What is the primary message of your newest project, “Make it Loud?”

The voices in the media and pop music today are getting louder and bolder. The culture of our world today is to declare what you believe, and mock anyone else who doesn't agree. I really prayed and asked God how we, as believers should respond to that. He gave me the idea for the song as a challenge to other believers to use our voices, our love, our wisdom, our joy, our testimonies, and our generosity to Make it Loud! It's a call to turn up the volume in our lives and to share the Hope of Jesus with someone.

Having already written and produced so many successful titles, where do you go from here?

I want to be the best wife that I can be and raise kids that love Jesus! That's priority one! I want to continue to write and record songs that inspire people to worship God and represent Jesus in everything that I do. I've also just produced a short movie and I loved the process, so I'm diving into that a little deeper. I'm also planning on releasing a book on Praise and Worship next year, so I've got my work cut out for me!

If you had to select any one title from your projects that could ultimately sum up your thoughts about what God has allowed to happen in your life, what would it be?

Defi nitely, The Best Is Yet To Come. It's been a prophetic statement over my life for over a decade and I still declare it over my life. I believe that even if it looks like the best days are behind you, the Truth is…The Best Is Yet To Come!

Make it Loud! It's a call to turn up the volume in our lives and to share the Hope of Jesus with someone. Make it Loud! It's a call to turn up the volume in our lives and to share the Hope of Jesus with someone.

It was John Adams’ July 3, 1776 letter to his wife Abigail that would prophetically characterize the celebration of a nation for generations to come. “I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought

to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.”

Independence Day to some and the Fourth of July to others, has become the national day of the United States, in commemoration of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. As the Thirteen Colonies legally separated from the Kingdom of Great Britain, the declaration of its independence was marked with 13-gun salutes, speeches, prayers, music, parades, and fireworks. In modern-day acknowledgment of this “day of deliverance,” fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions, political speeches and ceremonies, still mark the traditional celebration of America’s history.

The priceless demonstration of devotion to this declaration has perpetuated itself in wars, defenses, retaliatory confrontations, battles, burials, salutes, and cemeteries. As we fire up our grills and call our families together, let us also lift up our voices in reverent gratitude to God for our “day of deliverance,” as we are still, “one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” On this “Fourth of July” and always, may “God Bless America.”

There are two visible groups of members in the community: some just do not perceive that there is a problem to be solved and others learn to avoid looking to avoid thinking about what they see. The fi rst group is conducting

business as usual, benefi ting from the status quo somehow. However, the second group tends to quit the community; not attending Haitian Churches or Haitian parties, not supporting Haitian businesses, not maintaining Haitian friendships, and dissociating themselves from anything that is related to or associated with Haitians; sad, perhaps; but common. As a result, we see the formation of separatist groups whose courage, confi dence, and hope is being eroded by the inactivity of the leaders in the community. Disheartened, with a lot of complaining, these community members are emotionally withdrawing, and actually leaving the community.

Believe it or not, there is a growing third group whose members are identifi ed in the Civic League of Haitian-American Voters (CLHAV). This third group identifi es the situation in the Haitian community as unacceptable, and is acting to change it. They see an implied challenge to do something. The concept implied by CLHAV is simple: The organization wants to build a “VOTING BLOC” to help elect and re-elect qualifi ed Haitians and other candidates who want to support the agenda of the community. Working to elect or to infl uence government offi cials at local, state, or national levels is a powerful means of affecting policies that regulate behavior and shape the distribution of existing resources. The efforts of an organized, dedicated organization like CLHAV can have a tremendous impact in promoting change in the community change.

Although the Haitian Community doesn't have much money, compared to other well-established communities; the concept of "voting bloc" philosophy enacted by CLHAV can be a powerful tool of lobby to empower the community, and bring the social change that the community is seeking. Don't accept the myth that non-profi ts are not permitted to lobby. Yes We Can.

Our real social problem is that when talking to Haitians about politics, the fi rst answer is: "I don't do politics.” The majority of Haitians don't vote nor participate in the American political life. This is a real social problem that needs to be resolved right away. Participation in the political process can lead to profound changes in people's lives in the community. It occurs in two fundamental

areas. The fi rst and most obvious is, electing people to offi ce. In this instance, Haitians need to work in political campaigns, and get recognition for their participation. The second involves dealing with the people who have been

elected, working to infl uence them as they perform the duties of their offi ce. This work is generally referred to as lobbying. In either case, CLHAV will foster the environment for these opportunities.

We invite you to abandon “the bystander’s status” by joining CLHAV at www.clhav.org to promote this change. We encourage you to participate in the third group that is promoting community change that can stop our kids from denying their Haitian identities. Remember our motto: "Together Is Power."

Dear Pastors:

The prophecy has come forth for others to run with the vision. I am Ms. Mary Hamilton, CEO of Fishermen of God. I have been running with the vision for eight years. According to Habakkuk 2:2-3, I’d like to share the vision of Fishermen of God, Inc., a not for profi t ministry for seniors and grandparents within our community. It is with heartfelt pleasure that I inform you of the passion and vision God has blessed me with as depicted in Ezekiel 1:1-6, the wheel in the middle of the wheel.

For the past eight (8) years, Fishermen of God, Inc. has been hosting an annual Seniors and Grandparents banquet. This has afforded us the opportunity to minister, celebrate and acknowledge the seniors, grandparents and grandchildren in the community. Fishermen of God, Inc. is now available to assist your ministry or organization by hosting your very own annual Seniors and Grandparents Appreciation Banquet.

It takes a whole village to raise a child, and our seniors have been so instrumental in raising these grand-children. Our mission is to be a motivational piece for Grandparents raising grand-children. Our purpose is to educate the masses on the importance of wisdom being a legend in our communities as we continue to reach out to grandchildren. Our vision is to leave a legend/legacy for our community as we continue to shape the world of these grandchildren.

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. We are in need of your support in prayer, resources, fi nances and just spreading the word about this vision.

Yours for a better community,

HAITIAN FLAG DAYCELEBRATION

THE GINEL THERMOSY STORY

Ginel was rescued by a group of UCF Med students after the January 12, 2010 earthquake in Haiti. The students were in Haiti for a week to work at a tent hospital in Port-au-Prince as volunteers with Project Medishare, a nonprofit group from University of Miami. While there, Anika Mirick and her classmates came upon 20-year-old Ginel, who had just been diagnosed with advanced leukemia. His condition had deteriorated so badly that doctors in Haiti estimated Ginel had less than a month to live. His only hope was to get to a hospital in the United States where he could get the care he needed.

Ginel has been in GHATES care since July of 2010. The story of how Ginel and GHATES connected made front-page news in Orlando Sentinel in August of 2010. While doctors treated his leukemia, the Haitian community stepped in to support him emotionally. Milda Monplaisir-Elysee stayed with him at the hospital. Ginel’s condition took a major turn earlier this year when his doctors informed him that the leukemia has reached his spinal fluid and his brain. Ginel’s hope is to reunite with his family before his body completely deteriorates. MD Anderson CEO Dr. Brown steps in once more to grant Ginel’s wish by making traveling provisions and housing arrangements for Ginel’s parents if granted Visas to visit him in the United States.

GHATES invites all in the local community to connect with Ginel on facebook by googling his name and leaving a message of support. To learn more on how you can help Ginel, contact Milda Monplaisir-Elysee at 321-217-9960 or email [email protected].

The Haitian youth are seen as the most deviant. They should be given guidance, support, and access to resources so there can be a brighter future for them. The problem is most are disconnected with their Haitian roots. Prominent Haitian artist Patrick Noze said, “America has so many cultures, you have to have one in order to succeed.” The Haitian youth need to search for an identity for themselves, and recognize their strengths to become educated and achieve their goals. We cannot live through the past. We have to move forward. The Haitian population in Orlando needs to come together as a community. A community is a large group of people having something in common which connects them in different ways, and differentiates themselves from others. Haitians have a long rich history that exemplifies this definition. We have to build each other together as a people of one, and not be divided by our differences.

So how do we, Haitians, begin rebuilding our homes, community, and edifying each other, especially our youth? GHATES believes that the Haitian core in Orlando needs to actively participate in the following: education, entrepreneurship, spiritual, social and political sectors in order for Haitians to have a voice and a seat at the table when decisions are being made that directly impact us, our communities, and our motherland, Ayiti (Haiti).

We as a community can validate our presence and voice by simply showing up. Showing up at: our children’s school open houses, parent-teacher conferences, community information forums, training for small businesses, our city and county

Calling out orlando’s Haitians

board meetings, political candidates’ campaign town hall meetings, the election polls and vote for the candidate that cares about and takes action on the issues that affect our communities (sometimes that may be a Republican, Democrat, or Independent candidate), church services, community outreaches; and most importantly, help our local law enforcement by supporting or guiding their civil and criminal agendas.

Until we as Haitians begin taking an active role and responsibility in our children’s education, economic development, spiritual and self enrichment, social, and political movements; our youth will have no inspirations to be proud of their roots, and Haitians as a whole will continue to be an afterthought, the Hail Mary for a candidate to win an election, viewed as all bark and no bite, disorganized….in a nutshell, VOICELESS.

The last time Haitians came together to impact change for ourselves, was the fight for our independence. What will be the cry to empower us towards change, rebuilding, and empowering our youth, communities, and Ayiti (Haiti)?

It has been a year and a half since the catastrophic earthquake hit Haiti. Haitian Flag Day was last month, which was a great event to celebrate the culture and remember what Haitians had fought for; and not be ashamed, but be proud to be who you are and apart of where you have come from. However, there is a sense of emptiness in the air in the Haitian Community; maybe because there is no such thing as a Haitian community in the City of Orlando, due to the fact that the population is so spread out. GHATES is calling out Haitians and reiterating the issues that continue to plague our communities.

The perfect partnership for putting people back to work in a challenging economy; drew thousands to Orlando’s Amway Center for a mega-job fair with more than 100 prospective employers, and workshops to equip job-seekers and empower citizens with knowledge and skills to facilitate life-change. the Honorable Congresswoman Corrine Brown and Orlando Mayor Buddy dyer collaborated to connect residents with resources by fi lling the fl oor of the nation’s number one arena with representatives from state and federal agencies, branches of the military, colleges and universities, the hospitality industry, theme parks, and social service agencies. Interview techniques, resume preparation and dressing for success workshops added to the experience, as participants took advantage of the annual networking and employment opportunities.

The Orlando Christian Ministries hosts the 85th Birthday Celebration, honoring the Life, Legend and Legacy of Pastor, Dr. Nettie M. Frederick;

an established pastor and leader for over 45 years in the Central Florida area.

An exciting weekend of festivities began with the dynamic preaching of Pastor S. Lamar Simmons, of Love & Faith Community Church from Tallahassee, Florida, a Birthday Celebration Gala at the Peabody Hotel, and ended with a powerful, spirit-fi lled praise and worship service with Elder Leo Stoney, of LRS Ministries, of Orlando, Florida.

Dressed in a beautiful red evening gown, Dr. Frederick strolled into the ballroom on the arms of her grandsons for an evening of nostalgia and blissfulness, featuring musical guests Madeline Berry and Pastor Justin Felton and the Praise Team. It was an evening to be remembered.

A Life of giving unselfi shly to the Lord, a Legend in that she will be remembered for being a wonderful servant of Jesus Christ, and the Legacy, that which she leaves behind for the benefi t of others; Dr. Frederick will be counted and remembered as a great servant, and one that will be remembered for generations to come! We celebrate the life, the legend & legacy now & for many years to come!

From Gospel Now, and all of Central Florida, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Dr. Nettie M. Frederick!
