My parents got me started playing and they took me to tournaments most weekends when I was ajunior. They were and are still reallysupportive and encouraged me to enjoy it which I do.

Also I was very lucky to be involved in the England setup. We are so lucky to have an amazing support system behind us. Through funding from the national lottery and Sport England I get access to coaching, physiopherapist/ doctor, sports psychologist, strength and condi-tioning as all part of the EIS (English Institute of Sport). As well asfunding and flight expenses. With-out all this help I definitely wouldn’t be where I am now and it’stestament to everyone at England Squash that England are one of the strongest nations and we came home with 9 out of a possible 12 medals at the CWG.

Catching up with Alison Waters

Brief outline of your careerStarted playing squash at the age of 5. Won under 12 nationalchampionships at age 9. Squash was always what I wanted to do as a career and so after I finished my A levels I went full time at the age of 18. 12 years later I’m still enjoying it and I love being able to travel the world competing in tournaments doing something I love.

Career highlightsCareer high world ranked 3,currently 6. Represented England more than 50 times at a senior level. I am the National Champion 2014, my fourth time of being so. Silver and bronze medals at CWG Glasgow. In total I have won 13 Women’s Squash Association titles in my career.

Of what do you owe your career to?

Freshly back from the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Goslingmanaged to catchup with resident Squash Professional Alison Waters. Alison trains at Gosling Sports Park and is the 2014 British National Squash Champion & World Ranked No 6. Alison and teammate Emma Beddoes won bronze in the Women’s Doubles at the recent Commonwealth Games, as well as silver in the Mixed Doubles with teammate Peter Barker. We caught up with Alison to understand what it’s like to return after such an achievement!

After the Games, Alison Waters

goal has always been to be world number one. The current number one has been there for 8 years so to knock her off will be difficult. I believe in myself and beingnumber one is still my goal.

Lastly, any guilty pleasures?I still watch ‘Home and Away’. I record the omnibus on a Saturday. It gets a bit crazy when I get back from three weeks away and I have about 5 hours to watch. I love it though. It’s my downtime!

You can follow Alison’sachievements on her blog:www.alisonwaters.co.uk@Aliwat1

Also I train hard, squash is aphysically tough game and so I have always worked hard and this isdefinitely key to why I have done well.

Your key motivation beforecompeting at a high level?I love the game. I was a top junior and I knew that with hard work I could achieve things. I alwayswanted to be a squash professional and I love competing. It’s sosatisfying when you have played a good match and the hard work pays off.

Where do you aspire to be?I’m currently 6 in the world and my

By Stacy Chew, Personal Trainer

Squats are probably one of the most useful exercises we can do when it comes to exercising. Even though the squat is considered by many to be a leg exercise, it’s really a full body movement that works just about every muscle group in the body. Not only that, but it mimics lots of natural movementpatterns in everyday life. Whether your goal is to gain strength, lose weight strength the core, squats are one of the best and fastest ways to get there.

Squats are a compound movement - which means it’s a movement that uses more than one joint (your hip and knee joints) to complete. A simple body-weight squat uses almost every muscle group in the body – and if you add a dumbbell or barbell into the equation, you can cover every muscle group.  In addition to your legs you will strengthen your hips, back and core, yourshoulders and arms.   How to SquatStand with your feet slightly wider than your hips.  Your toes should be pointed slightly outward – about 5 to 20 degrees outward. Look straight ahead and pick a spot on the wall in front of you. You’ll want to look at this spot the entire time you squat

For a bodyweight squat, put your armseither straight out in front of you, parallel to the ground, or bring your hands to the back of your head with your elbows pointing outwards. Keep your spine in a neutral position. This means don’t round your back, but also don’t hyper extend your back.

Your weight should be on the heels and the balls of your feet. Keep your entire body tight the entire time.

Now, breathe in, bend at your hip and knees simultaneously pushing your bottom back.  Keep sending your hips backwards as your knees bend.

Keep your back straight, with yourneutral spine, and your chest andshoulders up.  Keep looking straight ahead at that spot on the wall.

As you squat down, focus on keeping your knees in line with your feet. When they start to come inside the toes, push them out (but not wider than your feet).

Squat down until your thighs areparallel to the floor (or as far as you feel comfortable)

Once at the bottom, stand back up, keeping everything tight, breathe out and drive through your heels (keep the

Drive your knees out the same way you did on the way down, and squeeze your bottom at the top to make sure you’re using your glutes.

Remember keep your body and core tight the entire time.

Tales of a GoKids Holiday CampWimbledon afternoon in Week 1, where all children attending camp got to try out a wide range of tricky tennis skills; a World Cup afternoon in Week 3, where we tried our hand at some football skills and the older groups had a competition; and even a Commonwealth Games afternoon in Week 5, where we had our own athletics meeting! These eventafternoons are not only great fun, but they also help to draw thechildren’s attention to the wider world of sport and British athletes within them.

DanceThe girls had some visits from Amy Goodman, Gosling’s very ownprofessional Dance Coach. She taught us funky moves and quirky routines to some of our favourite tunes. The dance sessions were

This summer has been a busy one at Go Kids. From Dodgeball toFencing, Skiing, Tennis, Cricket,Athletics, Taekwon-Do, Gymnastics and everything in between – we have literally tried it all! We have included a few highlights of the summer here, along with some of the things our Leaders and Parents had to say!

Badminton EnglandThe Blue group had a visit from James Craig, a Sport Development Officer from Badminton England. He came down to look at us all playing Smash Up Badminton – a new initiative aimed at encouraging more teenagers to get involved with Badminton. We challenged him to a few of the games and won them all! He took some photographs of us playing, and asked us which games were our favourite. The interviews and photos are being used as part of Badminton England’s socialmedia marketing campaign for Smash Up!

Event AfternoonsThis summer has seen lots of Inter-national sporting events and we’ve held our very own versions atGoKids. We had our own

the summer were the fancy dress parties – ‘I love seeing the effort the younger ones put into theircostumes, and we get to dress up too!’

Andy GodboldOne of the leaders that has been looking after our Blues. Andy loves working with children and says that it’s them that make the camps memorable – ‘whether it’s their funny sayings, cheeky smiles or the thanks we get at the end of the day, it’s the children that make Go Kids what it is.’

Feedback from ParentsThis summer has flown by at Go Kids and we’ve had more children than ever before attending our camps. But don’t take our word for it. This summer we received the following feedback results and we couldn’t be more pleased!

‘My kids have enjoyed it here very much.’

94% of people rated us as very good or excellent value for money!

91% of children gave us maximum marks for how much they enjoyed their time at go kids!

loved by the girls attending, and even tempted some of our male leaders to leave football and join in with us instead!

More New SportsGo Kids already offers a wide range of sports and yet we still managed to squeeze some more new ones in! This summer saw the first ever Netball sessions at Go Kids and they went down a storm. Netball is one of the most popular girl’s participation sports – and you’ll be seeing a lot more of it on our future timetables! And after introducing Fencing at previous camps, we have now got our very own fencing kit so we can lead these sessionswhenever we like!

If you are weak off the tee then be very strict with what part of the range is the fairway and try to create the same mental pressure you put on yourself when you are standing on the first tee every time you hit a drive at the range.

Hire a PGA ProBrian Lewis is our resident PGA pro here at Gosling for many years and has achieved some amazing results. Brian has created a unique facility at Gosling which combines hisunrivalled experience with some of the latest technology includingvideo playback. It really is a brand new experience and the feedback has been amazing! With prices starting at £25 for 30 minutes there has never been a better time to improve your golf at Gosling.

By Richard Parsons

Using The Range properlyHave you ever gone to the driving range and just tried to hit as many balls as you can as far as you can? Does that happen when you play a round of golf? Of course not.

There are all different types of shots you have to play on every hole let alone round. So why not practice as if you are playing a round. Before taking your first shot plan out 18 holes in your head, which ones are Par 3’s, Par 4’s or Par 5’s. For ease I suggest you pick 6 of each. Once this is done then attack your practice as if you are playing the hole until you get on the green.

This will give you a real advantage in your time on the range as well as taking some shots off your round next time round. There is no other sport where people go to practice but don’t at least replicate some in-game scenarios so why should you?

watching and learning from other inspirational people. Miss Becca Hayden (clocking in team member, issue 6) is a massive motivation to me. Her running is inspirational.

Barry “Bazza” James the Personal Trainer at Gosling Sports alsoprovides me with motivation. Also, Julia Easton, the Personal Trainer, really motivates me as well.

What is the top of your workout playlist?Earth Song, Michael Jackson

Top of the bucket list?I have three things left on mybucket list:1. To complete my first triathlon against able-bodied athletes.2. I would also like to complete and finish in the top ten of a para-triath-lon.3. To become a Fitness Instructor/ Personal Trainer.

Lastly, your guilty pleasure?Bread pudding, yum yum!

Most dangerous thing you have ever done?I was a part of the Scuba Diving Club at my Uni, and did my first ever open sea diving as part of our club trip to Tenerife. All was going fine until our Dive Leader signalled ‘shark’ and led us to get a closer look! Definitely more than I bar-gained for!

Motivation? There’s a saying at our Taekwon-Do club – ‘The few who do are the envy of the many who only watch.’ That’s stuck with me since I was little and I live by that. I’d rather be in there giving it a go than watching from the sideline wondering what it’s all about.

Top of the bucket list?To visit Australia!

Lastly, guilty pleasure?Gossip magazines. I hate that I read them, but I just can’t walk past with-out picking them up!

PositionSports and Activities Coordinator

Length of Service17 months

Best part about working for Gos-ling Sports Park? The sheer amount of opportunities available to local people, of all ages and abilities, is what I think makes Gosling really special. The best part of my job is seeing children come in to try our activities and leave with the biggest smiles on their faces, asking to come back again. Seeing them enjoy themselves, at gymnas-tics or Go Kids or in Jungle Mania, makes all of the hard work behind the scenes worth it.

Something your colleagues don’t know about you? I’m very chatty, so there’s probably not a lot they don’t already know! I guess the most obvious is that I do Taekwon-Do and have a IV Dan blackbelt. That always surprises people for some reason!

With Felicity Chandler

This issue we get down and dirty with Felicity Chandler, Sports andActivities Coordinator at Gosling Sports Park. Felicity takes care of thejuniors at Gosling, creating, developing and administering programmes that benefit our younger visitors.
