Chapter XXX: Winner Takes It All

BothJennifer and Eunice had never seen Tiffany so stern with thembefore. After fifteen whole minutes of straight lecture about how they didwrong and that Tiffany was positive that it was them two no matter what,Jennifer and Eunice gave up in trying to lie their way out of it. Upset, Tiffanyshook her head and gathered up her belongings, ready for the lunch bell toring.

"Tiffy," said Eunice softly with wide eyes. Tiffany glanced at her. "Whyare you the leader of the Asian Gossip Girls when you don't act like one most ofthe time?"

"Eunie!" cried Jennifer, gaping at Eunice's sudden bravery."Because," said Tiffany, sighing. "Julie would have wanted it that way."

"You're only in the group because your former best friend wanted youto?" asked Eunice, frowning. Tiffany shook her head in response. "Then why-"

The bell rang just in time to save Tiffany from Eunice's questioning.Gratefully, Tiffany left without another word. Eunice and Jennifer frownedafter her. To them, Tiffany was acting more strange every day ever sinceJezebelle became part of Jin's life. Even though Eunice and Jennifer wereignorant most of the time, they knew their leader well. Before all of thishappened, Tiffany was number two on Jin's imaginary list of female friends.Now, Rin Hamada was number two and Tiffany fell to number three. Tiffanymight not say it out loud but both Eunice and Jennifer knew about this. Theyfelt bad and therefore, they wanted to make it up to her. Somehow.

*******************************************Close to the end of fifth period, Mrs. Meyerson passed out the papers

they did a few days ago. Afraid to check on her score, Rin waited anxiously,staring at her paper and vowing that she would check once she was safelyinside the comforts of her bedroom. However, her boyfriend felt like it was hisduty to check her score for her.

"Kristian!" shrieked Rin, glaring at Kristian."Twenty-eight out of thirty," said Kristian out loud so the whole class

could hear. Rin flushed bright red. "Not bad, Rin-chan. Not bad at all." Kristianmoved his wandering hands over to Roselle's paper that was on the table nextto him and checked on it. "Rin-chan, how can you lose to Roselle by a point?

For shame.""Shut up you," said Rin, hitting him with her Calculus book.Roselle didn't even scream at Kristian for comparing scores. She was too

busy keeping her eyes on the board just in case she was tempted to glancedbackwards at Jordan, who was asleep as usual. This time, Jordan managed toused Jin's jacket as a pillow. Feeling her heart beat rapidly, she jolted up whenMrs. Meyerson came up to Kristian dead last with his paper in her hands.

"Jordan, wake up," said one of his friends. "Something good is about to

happen.""Another bee?" asked Jordan, yawing and sitting up straight."Kristian," said Mrs. Meyerson in a stern voice. She indicated at his essay

with a hard look in her eyes. "You didn't write your essay.""I answered the prompt didn't I, Mrs. M?" asked Kristian innocently.

"No, you didn't, Kristian," said Mrs. Meyerson in a stern voice. "This essayis to see if you understand what it means to be invisible like in 'Invisible Man'.You are supposed to write it in his shoes."

"What did you write about Shiratori?" asked someone from the back ofthe classroom.

Kristian stood up as if he was honored to read his essay out loud in frontof the class. "I wrote about if I were invisible, there's nothing I wouldn't do. Iwrote and I quote, 'What wouldn't I do'?"

"We are not in philosophy class," said Mrs. Meyerson in reminder."I know we're not," said Kristian, sitting down, laying back, and smirking

at her. "Or else, we would actually learn something."

Of course, his smart remark earned him a spot in detention. Ringrumbled at the sight of him happily fawning over his detention slip. Somehow,today, Kristian got by four of his classes so far without detention slips. He didget sent to the principal's office once but that was about it. For once, Rinthought that Kristian would get by without having to stay for detention but no,he had to go against her wishes.

"Why are you looking at me like that?" asked Kristian, glancing to Rin.The bell rang right then and there. "What did I ever do to you? Oh, exceptannoy you earlier today and made you to fall yesterday but no harm doneright?"

"Can you go one day without getting detention?" asked Rin, annoyed. She

was packing her belongings in a hurry."I can but," said Kristian, giving her a sparkling smile. "I wouldn't have an

excuse to walk you home from school."Rin reddened and walked past him. "Class is over. Let's go.""One second," said Kristian, running ahead and catching up to Jin and

Jordan. Kristian wrapped his arms across both of them. "No worries, Jin! Onceyou ambush Tilly in your bedroom, you can explain things to her then! Maybeover some loving?" Kristian waved it off. Not going to happen. "I mean maybeover some Pokemon?"

Jin blinked. "Er...""Your girlfriend lives with you?" asked Jordan in disbelief.

"Thanks, Kristian," said Jin after Kristian, who went back for Rin."No problem, Jin!" said Kristian, waving his hand over his shoulder. "Glad

to help!""Jin, you have explaining to do," said Jordan, inching closer to Jin as the

Korean boy laughed nervously. "Why did you keep this secret from me? Andwhy-"

Jordan stopped midway because Roselle accidentally bumped past himon her way down the hall. Of course, Roselle screamed out about how stupid

boys purposely have hard, bony shoulders to hurt her. At the comment, Jordanconsciously checked his shoulder to see if it were as bony as she claimed it tobe. Angry, she turned around to chastise them when she met Jordan in theeyes.

"Run away!" cried Roselle, dashing out of the building in a hurry.

"See what you have done?" asked Jin, indicating at Roselle.Jordan blinked. "She called my shoulder bony.""Jordan, er, that's not really the point...""She's so cute," said Jordan, staring after where Roselle was last seen.

Jin sighed. "We're going to see her at the tennis courts anyway but she stillstries to run away from me. Maybe she is being precautious around me?"

"Precautious?" asked Jin curiously, amused.Jin mistook it as a question on what it meant. "You know, like," Jordan

shrugged. "Discreet? Judicious? Preventive? No, Roselle is more cagey. She'sshrewd like that."

"You made it more confusing than before," said Jin, groaning.

"Sorry," said Jordan, shaking his head. "I change to a completely differentpersona whenever I talk to or about Roselle."

Jin scratched his head in wonder. "Persona 4 is a good game. You shouldtry it."

********************************************"Young, nice timing," said Coach Marshall, taking off his sunglasses and

turning it around backwards. Roselle grumbled at the sound of her name. "You'llbe playing a death match against Tilly today."

"You just want to punish me because I came out first out of the girls'locker room!"

Coach Marshall laughed loudly. "That's right Young. The whole world is

working against you.""I knew it," said Roselle, curling her hands into fists. "I saw this coming! I

knew that this whole world is being controlled by a super being that ispurposely trying to make my life miserable because I figured out its evil plans!"

"Yes," said Coach Marshall, smirking. "Now, go rally for a bit so that youhave a better chance of winning, Young."

"You are a big Meanie!" cried Roselle, stomping over to the fence andthrowing her backpack there. "Big, big Meanie. You are so mean that thebiggest Meanies cower in their Meanies' Hideout!" Roselle placed her hands onher hips. "Why can't you not be mean for once, Coach? Why are you here totorture me?" Roselle stomped her foot. "I don't want to die! This is the worst

day to play a match against her! You're so cruel to me!""There's something wrong with her," said Yvette quietly, who was sitting

on a pull out chair right next to Coach. She was busy checking the schedule fornext week. "She is acting more Roselle than usual."

"Even I can see that, Kwan," said Coach in distaste. Then, Coach noticedthat the boys were leaving the locker room together. "And I know who's fault itis that she is being more confrontational than normal."

Yvette lifted a brow. "You do?"

"There's only one big idiot who can do it," said Coach Marshall, puttingon his sunglasses and moving up to the boys. He noticed that David paled andhid behind Patrick for protection. "Stop being a coward Shin!"

"I swear," said David, still hiding. "I didn't do anything wrong.""He did something wrong," said the other boys in unison.

"I'll take care of you later, Shin," said Coach, spitting. The boys hurriedon their way. Coach allowed David, Boris, Grim, Patrick, and Javen to passsafely. However, he stopped it right when Jordan tried to pass. "You're in bigtrouble, Greene."

"May I go then Coach?" asked Geoff, beaming from behind."You may go, Singer," said Coach, waving the boy off. Coach waited until

he heard Yvette's shriek from Geoff's hug before he continued, "Greene, do youknow what you have done this time?"

"I wore my shorts," said Jordan, checking. "I brought my racket. I didn'tmake fun of you in any way. I haven't chatted to any girls in front of you todayyet. I haven't taken off my shirt or said anything perverted. I haven't hit a ball

over the fence or at you." Jin nodded in agreement next to Jordan. "What am Idoing wrong today then Coach? Do you have a real reason this time?"

Coach pulled Jordan by the ear back to where Yvette was sitting. Theboys watched as this went on. The girls were still busy in the locker room. Jinsimply followed them with wide eyes, but he kept a look out for Jezebelle.Finally, Coach pulled Jordan to a spot behind the handball courts nearby. Theylooked at to see Roselle practicing her serve by herself.

"You see that?" asked Coach, pointing."I see Roselle," said Jordan admittedly."No, shut up Greene," said Coach, pulling Jordan's ear harder. "Not her.

Her serve."

"Oh," said Jordan, watching the tennis ball instead. He watched for acouple of seconds before he noticed something. "She hasn't hit a single ballin..."

"You are Young's friend on the team.""Who told you that?" asked Jordan, taking a step backwards."I've been your fucking Coach for two years now and you think I haven't

noticed?" asked Coach, spitting on purpose. Jordan cringed. "Besides Grim, youtalk to Young the most. She has become terribly lazy after you showed yourfucking laziness in front of her."

"Sorry..."Coach shook his head. "Young is very inconsistent. She plays well when

she feels well. She plays like crap when she feels like crap. Who do you thinkmake her feel like crap? Grim?" Jordan sighed. Grim and David were talking andsmacking each other on the back with rackets. "It's you, you fuck tard. You andYoung work things out right now. Both of you are running ten, no, twenty lapstogether."

"But Coach-""No, but Coach me," said Coach Marshall, pointing at the field. "Now!"

Coach Marshall walked out in the open. "Young! Change of plans! You're running

laps this instant! You're running twenty laps with Greene!""No way!"Roselle started running the other way. Coach Marshall sighed and went

up to Geoff. Without saying anything, Geoff knew what Coach Marshall wantedso he chased after Roselle. In a matter of minutes, Geoff came back with

Roselle struggling in his arms. At the sight of Jordan waiting for her, Roselleblushed bright red and shook her head frantically."You don't have an option, Young," said Coach Marshall, chuckling. "If you

try to escape from running laps with Greene, you will be punished.""I'm not scared of you, you big Meanie!"Coach Marshall removed his sunglasses and stared at her in the eyes.

"Your punishment will be me putting you in a room with Kwan... alone." Yvettepicked her head up at the mention of her name. "I will order Kwan to lectureyou on tennis etiquette for a whole period."

"Harsh," chanted David and Patrick nearby, whistling."Anything but that!" shouted Roselle, trying to break free from Geoff. "I

don't want to hear about stupid etiquette! It's so stupid! It's so dumb! I don'twant to hear it from Yvette either! Her lectures are always so boring!"

"What did you say?" asked Yvette, glaring. She was ready with her racket."Release her, Geoff," said Coach with a nod. Geoff dropped Roselle off

and went around to tackle Jin into a hug. "Young, will you do what I ask?""Fine," said Roselle, pouting. "But only because I don't want to be around

you!"After Roselle stuck her tongue at Coach Marshall, she went to where

Jordan was. The two of them left to run laps. Coach Marshall sighed andwatched as a couple of the tennis girls were leaving the girls' locker room. Theylooked like they were coming to homecoming than tennis practice.

"Coach," said David, coming up to Coach Marshall. "I have something Ilike to say to you in private."

"What now, Shin?" asked Coach, annoyed. "I already knew you wouldchicken out of your stupid strike from the very beginning! I already knew whatyou did to the tennis balls!"

"Not that," said David, dropping his head. "It's about Jin and Jezebelle.""What about them?"David leaned over and whispered into Coach's ear. "Well you see..."Listening to David's suggestion, Coach watched as Jezebelle left the girls'

locker room last. She was wearing black from top to bottom with light greenribbons to tie up her curly light brown hair. Seeing this, Coach glanced over at

Jin who was surrounded by the senior girls and a bunch of other random girlsthat happened to be around here. Jin was also wearing green and black. Atlast, David finished just in time before Coach motioned for Jezebelle to comenear him.

"Tilly," said Coach, smirking. "Another challenge match today for you."Coach pointed at Jin. "You're up against Song!"

"What?" cried Jezebelle and Jin in unison."But what about my job as team manager?" asked Jin quickly, recovering.

"Shin said he'll do it," said Coach, throwing his thumb over his shoulder.David was about to protest when Patrick and Grim pulled him away. "Young isbusy running laps to play against Tilly today so you'll have to do Song."

"Whatever," said Jezebelle, flinging her hair backwards and headingtoward the tennis courts. "I'm just afraid I'll beat him too fast and won't have

anything to do for the rest of the period.""Fi..." said Jin, gazing after her."No worries, Song," said Coach, laughing loudly. "You may be on JV and

she on Varsity but you have the potential to beat her fair and square. Go outthere and make me proud!"

Jin touched his arm. "I haven't played in a month...""Rally for as long as necessary," said Coach, shrugging and walking over

to Yvette. "We have after school practice today anyways. Hop to it Song."Coach grinned over his shoulder at Jin. "Besides, what better way to solve anargument other than fighting it out physically on the tennis courts right?"

"Oh," said Jin, blinking. He ran after Jezebelle and grabbed her arm.

"Fi!""Don't touch me," said Jezebelle in an angry growl."If I win against you," said Jin, determined. "You have to listen to my

explanation!""What if I win?" asked Jezebelle deviously, amazed that Jin even had the

courage to challenge."Anything you want," said Jin with a firm nod.Jezebelle smirked. "Even your PSP?"Dropping his jaw, Jin thought about how he had to save for months in

order to buy that PSP. However, Jin shook his head and all thoughts of moneyleft his head. This was for Jezebelle after all so he was willing to give up

anything."Add my DS as well then," said Jin, acting as if he didn't care."I'm going to win for sure now," said Jezebelle, laughing evilly. She went

over to the benches to place her water bottle down. "You won't win this match,grapefruit. Actually, you won't even win four games against me. Four games andI'll listen to you."

"Fine then," said Jin, taking out his racket. "I'll still win. I didn't playtennis for ten years or so for nothing you know."

"I play tennis longer than you then, sugar sticks."At the sight of the former couple about to rally, the senior girls ran off

to inform of the nearest track team, who then ran around and told the other

teams. In a matter of minutes, the area outside the fence around the tenniscourts were packed full of people. Glancing over his shoulder, Jin thought alarge portion of the school were there.

The track team was the first ones to be there with Vance among itsmembers. The pale boy was sitting on the ground with a book in his hands anda redhead girl clinging to his side. The golf team was also there with theGapusan twins cheering on Jezebelle. The male baseball team sat on thebleachers with the boys' basketball team. They managed to fit with a couple of

the members standing. Standing tall, Sidney sat with his arms behind his neckwith the girls from the JV girls' tennis team around him. Wendy sat on thebleachers on the opposite end of Cash, who kept his eyes on her, and Gary, whohad the same permanent frown on his . There was also the volleyball teamwhere Odette was busy texting on her cell phone while the rest of the team

cheered for Jin. The football came last with Alejandro leading the pack and Bodead last.Other than sports team, other groups were there, including the entire

staff of the Hitching Post. Tiffany and Jennifer claimed a seat next to Grim,who had his notepad ready to write. Already, he already got the title of hissection of the newspaper. The cheerleaders were more enthusiastic thaneveryone else as they made a pyramid and cheered for Jin. Monika was missinghowever. Last but not least was the marching band.

"Are you sure it's all right for us to skip practice like this?" asked Rinworriedly, following Adrian's side and not knowing the situation.

"No one else wants to practice anyways," said Adrian, shrugging. "What

can I do about it? I'm not an oppressor by any stretch of the imagination. Noworries, Rin Hamada, everyone will practice harder after school. Besides," theserious Asian boy indicated at the tennis courts. "This is one match you don'twant to miss."

"Jin!" said Rin in complete surprise. Even from afar, she could recognizehim. "And Fi-Fi! What are they doing?"

"Fighting for their lives," said Kristian, appearing out of nowhere to steerRin away from Adrian. "From what I got from my text message, they arechallenging each other in tennis. If Jin wins four games against Tilly, he gets toexplain his story to her."

"And if Fi-Fi wins?" asked Rin anxiously.

"He gives up Sparky and Peppy," said Bo with a grin at them. He pulledRin by the arm, which made Kristian scowl. "I knew you would come, Rin-chan,so I saved you a seat next to me so I can keep you to myself."

"Bo, you don't want to do that," said Kristian in warning."Do what?" asked Bo innocently. "I am only borrowing her for sixth

period. Are you really that irritated about sharing Rin-chan with me?""I thought you two aren't friends anymore.""We're not," said Bo, grinning and patting Kristian on the shoulder. "We're

lovers." Bo pulled Rin to his side. "She's having an affair with me. Oh Rin-chan.Are you that sneaky to keep this a secret from Kristian? I didn't think you had itin you!"

Rin punched Bo against the ribs. "He's joking, Kristian, but," Rin glancedback at Bo. "I need to talk to Bo in regards to Jin."

"Sure," said Kristian, giving Bo a quick look. "You don't have to ask mypermission."

"I wasn't going to anyways," said Rin, sticking out her tongue. "And aren'tyou supposed to be helping a teacher right now? What are you doing here?"

Kristian waved a pass. "I told her I needed to take a leak.""Very mature, Kristian," said Rin, leaving with Bo. Once she and Bo sat

down and watched as Jin and Jezebelle rallied back and forth, Rin coughed forhis attention. "What is it that you want to talk about Bo?"

"I thought you wanted to talk to me," said Bo, giving her an innocentlook.

"Shut up Bo," said Rin, bitter. "What?"

"Do you think Jin has a chance against Fi?" asked Bo, glancing back at thecourts."I saw both of them play before," said Rin slowly. "Not a chance.

Unless...""Unless?"Rin shook her head. "It's a stupid idea. It's will only work short-term

anyways.""Jin only needs to win four games after all so that sounds pretty short-

term to me," said Bo quickly, watching Rin think about it. "Are you thinkingwhat I'm thinking Rin-chan?"

"For once, maybe."

Bo grinned. "You're the only one who can do it. You're the only one whocan bring this side of Jin out. Go out there and make me proud." Bo pushed Rintowards the fence. "Oh and for your info, Rin-chan, you were probably notthinking what I was thinking."

"Closet pervert," said Rin over her shoulder."Stop cheering!" screamed Coach Marshall at the cheerleaders. "This is

supposed to be a tennis match, not a football game!""I'm allowed to talk to the players before the game starts right?" asked

Rin to Yvette, who was surveying the game closely. Xuan Lan was on the courtsin charge of keeping track of the score. Yvette glanced at Rin, who blushed. "Ineed to talk to Jin for a second."

"Once the rally is over," said Yvette, twirling her glittery pen betweenher fingers. "You may talk to him quickly before his game starts during hiswater break."

"Thanks," said Rin, beaming. She noticed that right then, Jezebelle andJin finished and went up to their drinks. Hurriedly, Rin swung open theentrance and ran in. Jin was surprised to see Rin at all. "Jin, I need to talk toyou."

"I'm about to play a match against Fi," said Jin worriedly, hurrying to thecorner with Rin. "I'm so glad you're talking to me again, Rin-chan, I really do."

"It's not time for that now," said Rin, reddening and glancing away."Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you." Jin had no idea what she was

talking about but he nodded anyways. Rin took a deep breath and notice thatKristian and Bo were next to each and had their eyes on her. "Listen up, Jin,this is the last battle before you finish this game. Fi-Fi over there is the finalboss. Your last save point is two hours ago. If you lose now, you will have torestart and lose two hours worth of work. Your only chance is to defeat theboss in one shot. This is the tennis match to do it. Can you do this?"

Suddenly, Jin smirked. "Of course."Rin nodded firmly. "All right. The whole world is on your shoulders. Don't

forget it. Remember. You must defeat her no matter what. Understand?""Leave the hard work to me, Princess," said Jin in a deeper voice,

swinging his racket over his shoulder. "I'll show you what I can do in an hour."As Rin headed out toward the entrance, Jezebelle gave her a hard look,

"Did you..."

"I did," said Rin, smirking. "Good luck Fi-Fi." Rin closed the gate behindher and sighed. Kristian and Bo were already there, waiting for her. "I did it! Jinmight have a chance of winning four games now!"

"I never knew my girlfriend is so cool," said Kristian, smirking. Rinscowled again. "How do you know so much about that type of video game?"

Rin rolled her eyes. "My best friend is a video game addict for our wholefriendship. You think I didn't pick up a thing or two from him?"

"Good job Hamada-sama," said Bo, beaming."Rin-chan.""Oh. Right."

Refusing to talk to Jordan, Roselle ran as fast as she could ahead of him.For one thing, Roselle knew that Jordan had little to no stamina. This was whyCoach kept making Jordan run laps every day for the past week or so with anyreason at his disposal. By the time the boys' tennis season come around, Jordanwould have enough stamina to last eight games in Singles.

Unfortunately for Roselle, since she ran so fast in the beginning, sheslowed down considerably. Soon enough, after a great start, she found herselfjogging slowly next to Jordan who had learned to keep his pace after over aweek of training. Roselle refused to look at Jordan in the eyes. Jordan knew hecouldn't explain to her either since people might be watching.

"J-I-N spells Jin!"

At the sounds of the cheerleaders cheering and his coach screaming,Jordan suddenly noticed that literally no one was around them. The footballplayers vanished. The track team was not on the same tracks as them. Thebaseball and soccer teams also have left their respective areas. This was whenJordan realized that everyone on a sports team were over in the tennis area.Actually, even the band people had left their instruments in front of the bandroom.

"Thanks Jin," said Jordan under his breath. With renewed determination,he grabbed Roselle's arm to force her to look at his eyes. Jordan refused to letJin's efforts go to waste. "Since no one is around, let's talk Roselle."

"Abusive men are not sexy!" cried Roselle, trying to pull his hand off her.

"Sorry," said Jordan, releasing her immediately. "You've been avoiding meall day..."

"You're such a big meanie!"Landing on the ground, Jordan quickly climbed back up after such a kick

from Roselle. "What if someone saw that?""Shut up," said Roselle, placing her hands on her hips. "Why do I avoid

you? Isn't it obvious?" Roselle felt tears in her eyes. "I'm not supposed to talk toyou in the first place! I'm not your friend remember? Yesterday," Roselle paused

and dropped her head. "You merely tripped into me after all.""I apologize for that already," said Jordan, frowning."If you know that," said Roselle fiercely. "Then you should know why I

should avoid you at all cost! I'm not doing anything wrong, you big meanie!"Sighing, Jordan shook his head. "No, listen to me, Roselle." Roselle

wrapped her arms in front of her chest and turned away. "You've been actingweird around me. Before, you make it look like we're strangers. That's how it'salways have been. But today, you make it very obvious that you're avoiding meby running away at the sight of me."

"I get it," said Roselle, pouting. "I shouldn't make it so noticeable. I'msorry that my stupidity have inconvenience you. I will not let it happen again."Without warning, Roselle kicked Jordan's back and continued her jog. "Like I'llsay that and mean it! Screw you!"

"Why does she kick so hard?" asked Jordan out loud, having a harder timestanding up this time around and catching up with her. "At least let meexplain!"

"I don't want to talk to meanies," said Roselle coldly."You're irrational you know that," said Jordan, peering down at her with

a stern look. "I don't have to take this from you, you know. I'm popular." Rosellerolled her eyes in respond. "I can get any girl I want now that I'm no longer withVic, but I don't want to be with any girl." Suddenly, Roselle turned to him insurprise. "It's not what you think. You shouldn't be so ahead of your time,Roselle."

Roselle was confused. "Huh?""Do you think I'll actually like you like that?"However, much to Jordan's surprise, Roselle dropped her jaw and then

beamed at his words. He had never seen her smile so brightly before. She was

seat with David that she had left to talk to Coach. "You should ask her out.You're a senior now, Grim. You waited for how many years? I'm sure Rosellewon't reject you as coldly as Yvette did."

"But you still have a chance after high school with Yvette," said Grim in ahumorless tone. "If I mess up with Roselle now, there's no more chance for me."

no use talking to David, who was more busy staring at Yvette than at the game.

Before Jordan received an answer, Roselle kicked him. This time, he

dodged just in time and watched as she went back to running around thetracks. What did he do this time? Was she offended by hearing someone put hisname on the wall of the boys' restroom?

"I hate you," said Roselle tearfully when he caught up to her around thetracks. "You're a jerk! You're a meanie! You're awful! You think you can trick melike this? You think it's funny to ask a girl like me out with your friends huh?"

"Roselle..."Roselle noticed that Grim was waiting for her, but she simply said, "Not

He was always nice to her and willing tolisten to what she had to say. Heartbroken, Roselle couldn't believe she tookJordan seriously when it was all a joke. She hated all of the tennis boys on the

team except for Jin right now."Do you hate me Vance?" asked Kristian nearby in front of the pale boy.

They were by themselves in front of the boys' gym."Are you idiotic?" asked Vance with the usual apathetic look on his face."I hope not," said Kristian playfully. "Besides, you're not intelligent by

never making mistakes. You're intelligent by making them look correct. Do Iseem like an intellect or a fool to you Vance?"

"I prefer not to answer that," said Vance, amused. Kristian laughed untilVance shook his head. "But I don't hate you."

"I passed the test with flying colors then.""Hide me in your underground chamber," cried Roselle, hugging Kristian

from behind."I am popular with the girls today," said Kristian, glancing around at her.

Vance knew it was none of his business so he moved on. "I don't think you wantto go down there Roselle. I'm not unlocking that place for anyone other thanRin-chan."

"Gross, Kristian," said Roselle, pouting. "Hide me somewhere then."Kristian removed her arms from his waist and turned around. "Who are

you hiding from anyways?""Jordan," said Roselle without thinking about it.Sighing, Kristian pulled her over at where the tennis courts where, much

to her protest. Kristian said quickly, "It is better to hide in a crowded area than

a secluded one. Haven't you heard of that?"Roselle nodded with red cheeks. "I understand... why are you suddenly

nice to me?""Easy," said Kristian, smirking. "You are Rin-chan's friend and you are a

member of the Killers now. It's my job to keep you out of trouble." WhenKristian brought Roselle over to Rin, Roselle automatically ran over to Rin andhugged her. "I wonder what's going on between her and Jordan exactly..."

Jezebelle smirked as Jin smacked a tennis ball over the fence out ofanger at how he lost a close game against her. If he thought her forehand waspowerful, she had a great backhand to boot. Before Jin threw his racket on theground, he noticed Jordan walking across the crowd as in search of someone.Jin cooled his temper and went to the bench where he had little to no water

left. Cursing under his breath, Jin knew he had one game left to win butJezebelle seemed to be playing overhead shots that he was not very fond of.How did she figure out his weakness? He had no idea.

"Here Jin," said Jordan, holding a water bottle against the fence.Jin blinked. "Jordan...""I know I'm not supposed to talk to you," said Jordan, trying hard to

smile. "But Yvette ordered me to give this to you since you'll probably accept itfrom me so I'll use this chance to chat with you."

"Thanks," said Jin gratefully, accepting the bottle from the hole in thefence.

"You're getting your ass whooped," said Jordan, glancing at the score.

"Whatever," said Jin, taking a quick drink. "I only need one more game towin."

"You're lucky Jin," said Jordan in a low voice. Jin blinked. "Even thoughyou're popular, you can be with anyone you want. You can talk to everybody.You even have a support group backing you up no matter what. You're amazing."Jordan dropped his eyes. "You're incredible actually."

"Jordan...""I'm sorry," said Jordan in a whisper. "I'm sorry I ignored you. I'm sorry I

acted cold towards you since freshman year." Jin shook his head, surprised."You're the first person to ever talk to me and befriend me but I did that toyou." Jordan sighed. "But I want you to understand that all those years that I

didn't talk to you is not because of what everyone else thought of ourfriendship." Jin widened his eyes. "For you, I don't care what everyone elsethinks of me. For you, I can do the impossible... things that this coward can'tnormally do." Jordan tried hard to smile. "I guess what I'm trying to say is thatall these years... I stay away from you because it's better for both of us. You'rebetter off not being with me."

"That's not true," said Jin, frowning."This is cheesy for me to say but," said Jordan, laughing. "I guess I

wanted to protect my best friend, that's all.""Greene!" cried Coach, stomping over. "Is that you delaying the match?""Good luck," said Jordan quickly. "Got to go!"

Watching Jordan run with Coach chasing him down, Jin tried to thinkover what Jordan just said. All these years, Jin thought that the reason whyJordan stopped talking to him until sixth period tennis was to save his ownreputation. Jin didn't mind though because he knew how hard it was to beJordan. However, it was not until this year that he fully understood what itmeant to be popular. This year, thanks to Rin and Kristian's relationship, henoticed how Jordan had lost his individuality thanks to the people around him.Jin never blamed Jordan. Not even once.

But just a few seconds ago, Jordan told Jin that he did it to keep Jinaway from himself. Thinking back, Jin remembered that Jordan stopped talkingto him after he became leader of the Populars. According to Bailey, Jordan onlystarted becoming how he was now after he became leader of the Populars. No,Jordan wouldn't lie to Jin. Jordan stayed away from Jin to protect him. Jordan

didn't want Jin to get involved in the situation he was stuck in."Why Jordan..." said Jin softly. "Why did you tell me that after I decidedto help you instead?" Jezebelle kept her eyes on him nearby. Jin lifted his eyesup at Jezebelle, who hastily looked away. "I understand. I understand now. Idon't need to be the top. I don't even need to be the most popular in schoolanymore." Jin smiled to himself now. "All I need to do is become the leader ofthe Populars!"

"It took you that long to figure it out?" asked Jezebelle, amused."Fi," said Jin with wide eyes. "You...""You can't win me like this," said Jezebelle, laughing under her breath

cruelly. "What happen to the bastard that won three games so far? What

happen to him?""This is not a game anymore," said Jin in a solemn voice. "This is real

life."Jezebelle widened her eyes at him. "No really?""In real life, the hero doesn't always win," said Jin bitterly. "In real life,

the hero doesn't always save everybody and is full of righteousness. He doesn'talways do what is right." Jin lingered his eyes on the water bottle Jordan gavehim. "You don't always do what looks right and nice either, Fi." Jin stood upstraight with his racket. "Thanks for teaching me a valuable lesson."

"What the fuck are you talking about?" asked Jezebelle, narrowing hereyes.

"In exchange for you acting on my behalf earlier in front of everyone,"said Jin, aiming his racket at her. "I'll finish what I set out to do... even if itmeans I have to beat you at this tennis match with my own hands."

"You think you yourself can change these people after you win this tennismatch?" asked Jezebelle, smiling sweetly. She didn't think he would figure outher plans so soon, if at all. "You think you yourself can change how everyonethinks around here with just popularity alone?"

"At first, yes," said Jin admittedly. "But not anymore.""Oh?""A hero doesn't always have to save the world," said Jin, walking over to

his side of the court. He looked up at the sky before he was ready to serve for

the eighth game. "Maybe saving the princess is enough."
