WANTED - PEOPLE TO PLAN LOCAL EVENTS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

The City of Greater Bendigo and MIC Up Produc-tions (FreeZA) are looking for young people aged between 12 and 25 who are interested in planning and running local events for young people. Interested young people are invited to attend a spe-cial meeting set to take place at 4.30pm on Wednes-day on May 4 at BCentral to recruit young people and start planning some exciting local events for the future. City of Greater Bendigo Youth Participation Officer Rory White said MIC UP productions provides young people with the resources and skills to get local events off the ground. “We want to expand our Committee numbers and build on the successful events we have put together in the past. “In the past we have run Battle of the Bands gigs, pool parties and live gigs but our aim now is to run more events, more often for young people through-out Greater Bendigo. “The Committee is keen to create awesome events that reflect what the young people of Bendigo want in the way of entertainment. “Future events could include acoustic gigs, dance parties, BMX/ Skate competitions, comedy nights or workshops. We are looking for young people who think outside the box and who are motivated to turn their ideas into actions. “This is a great opportunity for young people to have a say in what happens around Bendigo and I urge all interested people to attend the meeting to find out how they can get involved. “By getting involved young people will be given a unique opportunity to develop a range of new event management skills that they would otherwise not get the chance to learn,” said Rory White. NEW BRIDGES FOR O’KEEFE RAIL TRAIL

The City of Greater Bendigo has completed the construction of six new bridges on the O’Keefe Rail Trail which runs between Bendigo and Axedale. City of Greater Bendigo Mayor Cr Rod Fyffe said the O’Keefe Rail Trail follows the disused Bendi-go to Heathcote railway line and currently runs a total distance of 19kms from the Bendigo Creek Linear trail to Axedale. “The six new bridges are valued at $395,000 and are located near Somerset Park Road, near Bennetts Road, over Sweeneys Creek, between Bowles Road and Giris Lane, near Giris Lane and near the Axedale Cemetery. “The construction of the bridges is part of a ma-jor $3.2 million upgrade of the O’Keefe Rail Trail that will also see the trail extended a further 24 kms from Axedale to Heathcote. “The 24km extension of the trail from Axedale to Heathcote will increase the trail’s length to a to-tal of 43kms and will offer significant start and end destinations - a major regional city at one end and a wine and arts orientated small town at the other end,” said Cr Fyffe. He said other recent maintenance works along the O’Keefe Rail Trail have included vegetation control and drainage and re-sheeting works along with the installation of new directional signage. “Further works are planned to upgrade the crossing at Axe Creek. In the coming months planning for the Axedale to Heathcote section of the trail will intensify and will include the con-struction of 15 bridges, path construction, sign-age and emergency markers. These works are planned for completion by late 2014,” said Cr Fyffe. The $3.2 million extension of the O’Keefe Rail Trail will be funded with $1.9 million from the State Government’s Regional Infrastructure De-velopment fund and a $1.3 million contribution from the City of Greater Bendigo.

CITY URGES RESIDENTS TOTAKE PRECAUTIONS AGAINST MOSQUITOES

Greater Bendigo residents are being warned to protect themselves against mosquitoes follow-ing new detections of Murray Valley encephalitis virus (MVEv) in sentinel chickens in Bendigo. City of Greater Bendigo Environmental Health Manger Susannah Milne said the City is encour-aging residents to take some simple precautions to help protect against mosquitoes. “Even though we are experiencing lower mosqui-to numbers in the recent colder weather, num-bers could rise if the weather warms up again. “Householders should ensure that insect screens fitted to doors and windows are in good condition. “Mosquito numbers can also be reduced by get-ting rid of stagnant water around the home. “As mosquitoes take about 10 days to breed, water containers should be emptied at least once a week. “Mosquitoes will breed in anything that can hold water including old tyres, unused fish ponds and pot plant holders. “Mosquitoes are at their most active at dawn and dusk. To reduce the chances of being bit-ten, people in mosquito-prone areas should cov-er up by wearing long, loose-fitting clothing and use insect repellents containing picaridin or DEET as an active ingredient on exposed skin areas when camping, in their gardens or at bar-becues,” said Ms Milne. She said usual symptoms of Murray Valley en-cephalitis virus include severe headache, high fever, drowsiness, tremor and seizures. “People experiencing such symptoms should seek urgent medical attention from their GP or their local hospital,” Ms Milne said.

MAYOR URGES RESIDENTS TO REPORT

VANDALISM TO POLICE

A number of recently planted trees have been van-dalised in Rosalind Park and Greater Bendigo Mayor Cr Rod Fyffe is appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this act of vandalism to come forward and report it to the Police. Cr Fyffe said the City’s Parks staff were extremely disappointed to discover that six trees worth ap-proximately $3,300 had been vandalised in Rosalind Park over the weekend. “The advanced trees which were 2 metres high and were located downhill from the Rosalind Park tower had only been planted about 12 months ago and have been so damaged that all need to be re-placed. “It’s just senseless vandalism that at the end of the day comes at a considerable cost to the ratepayer. It’s a huge waste of time, effort and money for all concerned. “I encourage residents to contact the Police imme-diately if they see anyone causing damage to trees or any public infrastructure in all parts of Greater Bendigo. This is the only way to stop these types of senseless acts,” said Cr Fyffe. He said the Parks staff are currently working hard to have Bendigo looking its best for the busy East-er period when both locals and visitors flock to the City Centre. “While the Parks staff work hard all year round they take particular pride in having the City look its best for Easter so it’s a very busy time of the year for them. “Greater Bendigo is known for its fantastic streetscapes and parklands and it’s really disap-pointing to see this type of senseless vandalism occurring,” said Cr Fyffe.

Goornong Rural Fire Brigade

Encourages diversity, team work and a family atmosphere.

It involves itself in community pro-

jects. It has a broad age group and

Torchlight Procession Captain David Patterson, Di Patterson, Felicity Nicholls, Jason Carty and Tim McCrohan put on their best marching gear and represented the brigade at the 2011 Bendigo Easter Festival Torchlight Proces-sion. Support was offered by Donna Papworth and little Kate in her bunny suit. We marched with members from Elmore Fire Brigade as they proudly displayed a banner indicating their centenary cele-brations. Nineteen other brigades attended the procession, along with marching bands, army, SES, Na-vy and the Chinese Dragons. The evening offers an opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to providing a vital service to the community.

New Fire Station Our new fire station is taking shape and going up quite rapidly. At the moment we expect to have the official opening in June or July and the Goornong community will be invited to celebrate with us on that occasion.

Incident Report We have had a busy 4 weeks with our brigade attending 5 incidents, 4 small vegetation fires (mainly stubble burns getting out of control) and one tractor fire.
