Principal’s Message Resilience - Respect – Responsibility
Return to School
Yesterday, students returned to school full-time. This decision was made by the Department of Education on the advice from Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC) and NSW Health. Returning to school will provide the best outcomes for students.
We are following the Department of Education’s protocols for distancing and maintaining hygiene standards for staff and students. The school is receiving an extra two hours of cleaning during each day and the toilets, light switches, door knobs, railings, play equipment etc. are wiped down with disinfectant. The department has supplied the school with extra toilet paper, hand sanitiser, antiseptic wipes, soap and other hygiene items so we can provide the safest learning environment possible for students and staff. Physical distancing of children in schools is not required by the latest AHPPC guidelines. Research has shown limited transmission risk associated with school children in the school
environment. Physical distancing requirements remain for adults. All adults must maintain physical distance from each other (1.5m) including teachers, support staff and parents.
Attendance and roll marking
All students are expected to attend school unless they are unwell.
If parents believe that their child has a condition which means it is not safe for them to return to school, they will need to obtain a medical certificate. If a student is absent for more than three days without a medical certificate, this will be recorded as an unauthorised absence and followed up by the school in line with normal practice.
School activities
Teachers will continue to follow the normal school curriculum with the exception of some activities that can’t go ahead for now.
What children can do:
Use the school library Engage in non-contact sporting
activities
What students can’t do:
School assemblies School incursions and excursions
including camps Inter-school activities (debating,
inter-school sport) In-school activities requiring parent
or other volunteers Drink from a water bubbler – bring a

Dropping off Students
Thank you to the parents who are following our procedures for entering the school; it is greatly appreciated. These procedures will remain in place for the foreseeable future.
Parents are requested to enter the school via the office gate (Moira Street entrance). If you need to see your child or a teacher, the staff will bring them to the office. Parents are asked not to enter the classrooms as we want everyone to be as safe as possible. Students should be dropped off and picked up from the Penney Street gate and we ask parents to wait outside the school grounds. Students will meet them on the school side of the road at the gate.
Routines will still be the same for students catching the bus, walking or riding a bike/scooter.
Journal of Events
If you have any photos of students learning from home, could you please email to [email protected] as I would like to add them to pages in our 2020 school magazine. Any of your reflections on the experience of remote learning would also be appreciated.
National Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week
Today is National Sorry Day which acknowledges and raises awareness of the history and continued effect of the forced removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from their families, communities and culture.
This Wednesday is also the beginning of National Reconciliation Week that celebrates and builds on the respectful relationships shared by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians. Students will increase their understanding of these important events through discussions and different activities.

After reading The Very Cranky Bear, the K/1/2 students planned and created a puppet show. Here they are performing with their own hand made puppets.
Miss Horne has been an absolute joy to have in our class. She has taught so many lessons and will be a great teacher when she graduates. We would all like to say a huge thank you to Miss Horne and good luck with the rest of your degree.

3/4 News Delicious Persuasive Writing
Last week, students in class 3/4 completed their persuasive writing about why Mr Bourne should make them pancakes. The students had a great time writing and publishing their texts as well as getting to eat some delicious pancakes. Although all the students wrote excellent persuasive texts, we could only fit a couple into the newsletter.
We Deserve Pancakes
I definitely believe Mr Bourne should make us pancakes because we are great students, we will not complain about having pancakes and we will be the best class in the school.
Firstly, it is critical that Mr Bourne makes us pancakes because we are great students.
We are always quiet and listen when Mr Bourne is talking to someone. Great students and excellent listeners deserve pancakes.
Secondly, everyone knows that 3/4 students deserve pancakes because we don’t complain about having pancakes even if we don’t like them very much. We are always grateful for receiving pancakes as a treat.
Lastly, you must agree that 3/4 students are the best class in the school, which means we must receive pancakes. We outshine the other classes and do all our work. We are resilient and never give up. The pancakes will boost our happiness and energy and help us to be an even better class.
In conclusion, I strongly believe Mr Bourne should make us pancakes because we are great students, we never complain about having pancakes and we are definitely the best class in the world!

Secondly, It is imperative that I get pancakes because I try my best. I work hard so I can improve my maths tasks every day and Mr Bourne loves it when I work hard to achieve my goals.
Lastly, I am absolutely certain that I deserve pancakes because I help other students and my teachers. By helping other students, I am showing respect and respectful students definitely deserve pancakes.
In conclusion, I strongly believe Mr Bourne should make me pancakes because I am the number one student in the class, I try my best every day to improve my learning and I always help my teachers and peers.

5/6 News Years 5 and 6 have been learning about the comprehension strategy visualising where learners create a mental image from a text being read. Visualising brings the text to life, engages the imagination and uses all of the senses. Last week, the students used the visualisation strategy sketch-to-stretch, which involves visualising a passage of text and interpreting it through drawing.
Roald Dahl’s ‘James and the Giant Peach’ is the perfect text to use this comprehension strategy as Dahl’s exemplary use of figurative language and detailed descriptions make it easy to depict his story in drawings.
In maths we learnt about geometric patterns and their rules. We then created our own patterns using coloured matchsticks.

On Thursday we had a lesson on 3D solids. The students learnt about their properties and their nets. All students then constructed their own 3D solids using straws, string and pipe cleaners and lots of resilience and problem solving.
Students have been spending time getting in touch with their creative side to design and create their entries for the School Operation Art competition. The students are given the brief, to create a bright and colourful artwork that will inspire and brighten the day of children who may be sick in hospital.
