• Box for phrases like climate change• Box for alternative terms eg impacts effects• Box for terms you don’t want• Limit to particular dates of publication

It’s OK to use Google when
• you’re trying to get a handle on a topic • Wikipedia, and the references at the end of a
Wikipedia entry can help• You need to know how to do something eg
how to indent in Word ; how add excel column• You need a government document, company
website, council information• You need to calculate, translate, define

When you can’t find a document in the usual places
• You have a citation• You can’t find it in the Journal Titles list• It is not on Course Reserve• It is not in Discover
• Search Google for the “article title” and “journal title” (and possibly also the author’s family name)

It’s OK to use Google when
You need to find FACTS not analysis
BUT you need to be confident of where the facts come from

• Thousands of books online, free• Full text, portions of the book, referenced only –
you choose• Quality varies from high quality academic
publications to children’s books – you make the judgement
• Always worth trying if you are looking for a specific title and it is on loan, or USC does not own it
